"In a world devastated by mysterious spatial quakes, Shido isn't what you'd expect in a hero. He's an average Joe who gets bossed around by his adorable little sister and mocked by the popular girls at his school. You'd definitely pick him last for dodge ball, but when it comes to saving the planet from imminent destruction, Shido's got one thing going for him: intergalactic hotties can't keep their hands off him! When the secret to stopping the spatial quakes turns out to be romancing the extraterrestrial Spirits responsible for all the chaos, Shido the loveable loser becomes the hero of all humanity. For every Spirit he makes out with, mankind breathes a little bit easier. Kiss the girls -- save the world. That name of the game is driving the space babes crazy, and nobody does it better than Shido!"
Date A Live isn't quite the series I thought it was going to be from different OVAs and commercials I had seen in the past. I probably should have seen the dating sim element coming from "Date" in the title, but I thought it would be something else. That's not to say that the series isn't any good, though. I thoroughly enjoyed the bulk of it except where the girls/Spirits basically become playthings as Shido doesn't really form a true emotional connection to any of them. The graphics are great. Full 1080p native looks fantastic on a large TV.
Aside from the complaint about the fate of the different girls, my only other real issue is with the English voicing. Funimation usually nails most of their Dubs; but I didn't like it here. Got my younger brother to watch it with me and he even commented that the voicing for Tohka seemed to change towards the end. The voice got way too deep and didn't feel like the character at all. I swapped back and forth with the English Dub and Japanese with subtitles depending on if I wanted to do something else at the same time.
Overall, Date A Live is a good, solid series that was quite enjoyable. Unlike so many other series, it actually has a 2nd season on the way, too! The bonus features showcase the trailers for it. Keep your eyes peeled as it should be streaming later this year so we won't see it in North America until 2015 at the earliest. Check it out if you enjoy a good romance/comedy #romcom#.
This fantastical release from the epic anime series Maoyu includes all 12 episodes of the show, following the story of fanciful world of knights, warriors, ancient scholars and powerful sourcerers, in which demons and humans cease their war and elect to forge a truce.

"Names can be deceiving, something the warrior known as Hero quickly discovers when he storms the castle of the dreaded Demon King that mankind has fought for fifteen years. For one thing, the "king" turns out to be a queen! Even more shocking, though, is that she's waiting for him with an unexpected proposal. She points out that it would be bad for BOTH sides if the war was to end immediately, as without a common enemy, the individual factions of the winning side are certain to turn on each other in a new series of civil wars. However, she has a plan to end the war, bring democracy and advanced knowledge to humanity, and ensure lasting prosperity for both sides, no matter who "wins". But to accomplish this, she needs a collaborator on the human side, and she's chosen Hero as the one partner she can trust! Is it a deal with the devil, or mankind's only hope for lasting peace? The traditional rules of Swords and Sorcery are completely rewritten as the "good guy" and the "bad girl" join forces to save the world in Maoyu ~ Archenemy & Hero!"
Maoyu is not your typical anime series by any stretch of the imagination. It's one of those series that you start watching and just can't stop. It's not that it's action-packed and leaves off with a cliff-hanger every episode, but it excels in everything that it does which just leaves you longing for more. And it's not just about Hero and Maoyu; there are a plethora of other characters that are given screen time and show plenty of development. The series also takes on an extremely educational aspect as it focues on the underlying causes of war, who and how it affects, trade, economies, religion, and more. Given that it's directed by the same guy who was over Spice & Wolf, you can consider it the same but on a much larger scale.
I defintely loved watching this, but there are a couple things that I thought could be done just a little better. Maoyu is just a little too bouncy! Always a fan of oppai, but it just felt a little off; especially with the jiggly sounds whenever they shook. It's always disappointing to see that they never actually get to share a kiss as well. It's probably the only unoriginal part of the story where they're always interrupted just when you think that they might get to share a moment. Lastly, it doesn't look like there'll be a second season. It ends very solidly, but it was such a good series that I'd love to see more. One more thing... they don't have actual names! Just Hero and Demon King :/
Last year when the series was wrapping up, I saw a coupld sites post something about the "I am human" speech from this series. Was supposed to be one of the great speeches of anime history. In episode 9, you run across this and it is very inspiring. It's a huge instigator in the story line that speeds up the ending. You can find it on Youtube if you want to check it out. The part just before hte speech is a public lynching which is a little more graphic.
Maoyu is one of the best titles to come out in North America this year, in my opinion. The story is incredibly well thought out. The graphics are still great on Blu-ray even with all 12 episodes being put onto just one disc, and the voicing is fantastic as well. There are no English dubs available which may be disappointing for some. If you haven't checked this one out, now's the time to do it. You won't be disappointed!

"Having grown in a devout Christian family and desperate to please his sin-obsessed Catholic priest father, young Yu (Takahiro Nishijima# a fairly normal kid who has no legitimate sins to confess decides to take on sinning big time and becomes a master of up-skirt photography while perfecting his ninja moves required to get just the right angle on his subjects. Things become complicated when our drag-clad hero meets the woman of his dreams; the man-hating Yoko #Hikari Mitsushima#, who's involved in all-out street brawl and beating up a gang of men. This four-hour epic was a new york times critics' pick and winner of the prestigious caligari and fipresci prize awards at the 2009 berlin film festilval. Directed by the great Sion Sono #Suicide Club#."
Epic is definitely a word that can be used to describe Love Exposure. Pulling in at just under 4 hours, it's the longest movie that I've ever watched. I told myself that I would watch 2 hours one night and the other 2 hours the next, but I liked it so much that I just watched it all in one sitting. I might have been a little zombified for work the next day, but it was worth it!
Being nearly 4 hours long, the plot in this one is built up extremely well. You're exposed to every single thing that happens to Yu and how he's driven from being a normal Catholic school boy into a perverted delinquent. The same also applies to his love-at-first-sight, Yoko and Aya, the recruiter for the Zero Church. All of the characters are seeking their own unique idea of a family as they try to overcome obstacles in their lives. Yu can only confess his love to Yoko while he's cross-dressing as Ms. Scorpion which just adds to his troubles.
The ending almost felt a little rushed which is hard to say with it being 4 hours long! However, it looks like it was originally almost 6 hours long but was trimmed down. That's one heck of a movie! This one only has Japanese audio with English subtitles as it's an import movie. If you don't like reading, you probably want to skip on this one unless you can understand Japanes. Sadly, there aren't any extras on the disc. I would have liked to have seen the 2 hours that were cut from the final version. Enjoy!

Wanted to see this movie back when it was in the theaters, but I kept putting it off. Now I've been waiting the past week for it to come out to purchase. It's hard for anyone to not like this movie. The animation is fantastic as it was all done with the Lego CG builder that anyone can use by going to Lego's website. The cast is full of celebrity names that will keep you laughing your butt off. And while the plot might not be the greatest, it's still incredibly fun to watch and enjoy.
All of the small things in this movie just made me love it: The giant subwoofers in the Batmobile, the variations of the "Everything is Awesome" song, Unikitty's high pitch, and so much more. Unikitty became my favorite character at the end. Also, the mention of a sequel is awesome, too!

This is the soundtrack to the new anime series Brynhildr in the Darkness/Gokukoku no Brynhildr. Like any horroresque series, it needs a very strong musical score to set the mood and build up the suspense. The first track, Ejected, is probably the best non-vocal opening to ever come out in my opinion. I absolutely love it and have been listening to it for a couple weeks now! The rest of the tracks are all strong additions that just solidify the entire album. The surprising thing with this OST is that both the opening and ending themes are on here. You usually have to purchase the artists' CDs to get those. Also, the 2nd opening theme, Virtue and Vice, is not on here. Here's the entire track listing:
1. BRYNHILDR IN THE DARKNESS -Ver.EJECTED- 2. Memories 3. Into the Crisis 4. NEKO SAN 5. Is this Love!? 6. UNMEI NO HAGURUMA 7. Begining 8. HANGUP 9. Her...nest 10. Pain 11. Dance with the Devil 12. Unlike most others that I've talked to, Drakengard 3 is the first title in the series that I've ever played. Most of the guys at work told me about the previous ones and how they played them in the past while I'm just nodding and explaining how I'm hacking all of my sisters to death in this game. I'll admit that I'm not familiar with the story behind the series and was primarily interested because the first emails Sony sent out had the game in a PS4 case... which they later said was an error :/
But, that aside, my review lines up pretty closely with the first reviewer, Stoked. The minor issues are just that; minor. It's incredibly over the top in whatever it does which just adds to the fun. You can't enjoy this game if you don't like violence and/or have a crude sense of humor. Just from the opening cutscenes, you're massacring hundreds of soldiers, drenched in blood, and you also get your arm blown off. After that, you've got characters that have been so sexually active that they look 60 when they're only 22, characters gushing giants geysers of blood as they're cut open, and cursing and perversion that can make a sailor blush. Great times!
Drakengard 3 plays very similar to the DMC series, in my opinion. There's a lot of hack and slash, jumping into the air, and dashing from one enemy to the next to create killer combos. Think I capped my top combo at about 110 or so. I love the weapon change capability where you can swap between swords, polearms, fist weapons/gauntlets, and chakra. To complete some objectives or get past certain enemies, you have to make use of them all. The only way to get past a line of soldiers with their shields blocking you is to do a power attack with a polearm type weapon. The ability to instantly swap weapons in the middle of combat is great as you'll want to pull out those gloves or your sword if you get surrounded by a group. The combat on the dragon is a little different but I found it to be a bit simpler than hand-to-hand combat.
While the game opens up on an incredibly bloody and crude note, it definitely softens as the story goes on and you learn more about Zero and the Intoners. Be prepared for multiple story paths just when you think the game is over! Was pushing through thinking I about had the game beat when that cureball hit me straight in the head.
To me, it's been a great game to play even if it has to rely a bit on dirty talk and innuendo. The feeling of the game maturing as you go on only adds to me liking this one so much. Hopefully they'll do a release on the PS4 that fixes some of the issues.

After working with vacuums for a while now, the only ones that I can see myself buying are a Dyson or an Oreck. This vacuum isn't for everyone, especially with the price tag on it. Like some others, I was able to pick it up as an open item and got an amazing deal on it. It's got amazing power and suction which my previous vacuums seriously lacked. The biggest thing is when vacuuming along counters or against the wall and how I don't have to pull the hose out and put it to the grinder. The auto-switching between floor types is incredibly nice as well. I always hated having to adjust the vacuums in the past between bare floors, short carpet, and longer carpets.
If you want a vacuum that will last, then pick up a Dyson. 5 year manufacturer's warranty along with Dyson's great customer service keeps customers for life. And with the 4 additional years of Geek Squad Protection, I'm covered for 9 years now!

Usually there's not much to say about a fan except that it blows air. While that applies to the Dyson fans as well, there's so much more to them. The bladeless design makes it safe for kids and pets which I was worried about with my cat trying to play with it. It's also extremely quiet compared to most other fans of similar power. Heck, if anything, I'm willing to pay a bit more just for the great designs they have. The only real detractor can be the price, but you get what you pay for with a very high quality item that isn't going to break in a year or two. I still got 4 years of the Geek Squad Protection so that I could just have anything taken care of from the store if something does happen to it.
I've been selling the Dyson products for a couple years, but I really got the desire to purchase one of the fans after seeing them in several anime series that I had purchased. Another case of very successful advertising even if Dyson didn't pay for it!
This bone chilling release from the supernatural horror anime series Shiki includes all 22 episodes of the series, following the story of a young man named Natsuno Yuuki, whose village is being overcome by a deadly plague. The source of the disease is mysterious, but as the body count rises, so does the possibility that it comes from the undead.

The original volumes of Shiki are gone, so here's my review of them together for the S.A.V.E. bundle!
I'll leave out any spoilers until the end of this for those that want to watch the series without knowing anything about it beforehand. Most will already have suspicions by the 1st or 2nd episode, but Shiki does a wonderful job at building the suspense and mystery throughout the first season.
I loved the assortment of characters that we're introduced to here, but there isn't much in the way of character development. Surprisingly, the "Shiki" seem to develop more than the regular cast. Toshio Ozaki, the village doctor, is probably the best developed character so far seeing as how he starts out completely calm and composed but by the end he's lashing out at everyone because of his frustration. He regains his composure in an effort to combat the village's situation.
The artwork and visuals from Shiki are phenomenal #might be something to do with the Blu-ray...#. It's not just about the graphics, though. The character designs run the full range of everything that you'd expect to find in a backwoods village in the middle of nowhere with a population of only 1300. You have the few kids/teens born into the village, a couple "aliens" that have moved from the big city, and the majority of older/elderly residents that comprise the location.
Aniplex/Funimation hit a home run with the voice cast in this one, too. Haven't had any English voices that made me want to box my own ears...#looking at you "Vampire Knight"# and haven't touched the original audio, yet. I enjoy series where I have to read the subtitles, but it's a lot more enjoyable when I can focus on the whole screen instead of trying to read what they're saying.
SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT:
Now, that's out of the way. Little bit of coverage for the story through the end of the first season. "The story takes place in a particularly hot summer in the nineties, in a small quiet village called Sotoba. A series of mysterious deaths begin to spread in the village, at the same time when a strange family moves into the long abandoned Kanemasa mansion. Toshio Ozaki, dean of the only hospital in Sotoba, initially suspects an epidemic. But as investigations continue and the deaths begin to pile up, he becomes convinced that they are the work of the undead plaguing the village. A young man named Natsuno Yuuki, who hates living in the village, begins to be pursued and surrounded by death." The story mainly focuses around Natsuno and Toshio, but occassionally you'll get scenes shown from the point of view of the supporting cast. What's the story really about? Vampires! Actual vampires...not the freaks from Twilight that glisten in the sun. Stake through the heart, decapitate, burn up in the sun Vampires! The village also calls vampires the okiagiri who are a local legend. There is no peace-making between humans and vampires here. It's just kill or be killed. This season pretty much ends on a high note for the vamps as they seem to be knocking off those who suspect them one-by-one.
Definitely recommend this series to anyone. Little bit of blood but not enough to be gore so far. Fanservice is pretty much non-existant. Tons of suspenseful moments.
2nd season review: Well, by this point, you know that it's a series about a vampire invasion. Won't ruin any spoilers of the end. Season two was like the first season with a lot of drama, but the action must awesome this time around. Whereas before it was a horror/suspense series, I'd call the 2nd more of a horror/gore/action type. There's no shortage of blood to spill going on as the streets and sewers literally run red with blood. Mountains of bodies pile up as old friends become new foes and no one knows who they can trust. Definitely not for the weak of heart as I found myself cringing and trying not to mute a couple parts. The graphics are one thing...but the voicing was so superb...it really made all the screaming reach out to you.
I had a hard time trying to find a side to actually go for...humans or vampires. The beginning of the series definitely made me feel more for humanity, but the attrocities they commit in the second half made me wish that the vampires would succeed in their attempt to create a home base for themselves. Shiki was a true masterpiece in this sense. Both sides were just after their own livelihood: "Their survival means your demise" sums it up pretty well. The fear and despair on both sides can be felt so vividly. Really wanted everyone to survive.
The ending was a pretty big surprise for me, but I thought it was actually pretty well done. Shiki goes through more characters than Game of Thrones, so you can't get attached to any characters. There were two deaths that I had a hard time watching. They both experienced extremely graphic and horrible deaths. Even if they were vamps...the humans still put them through pure torture. Hrmm, there's actually a 3rd that was particularly bad as well. Toshio's experimentation on his wife after she comes back to life wasn't pleasant. Especially when he explains some things he did to her that weren't visualized.
In the end, a ton of humans and vamps bite the dust. My only regret is that there isn't anymore to watch. Believe this is a great time to go read the manga and see how it is compared to this adaptation. As long as you don't lose your lunch easily, this series is incredible. Wouldn't recommend Shiki to kids, but the story is top-notch and really drags you in with all the suspense.

"S3x and depravity shatter the illusion of innocene and replace it with the unquenchable flames of desire... YELLOW STAR: The beautiful Ayana just isn't ready for s3x. she keeps begging her boyfriend to wait just a bit longer. But when her mom marries Mr. Fujisawa, Ayana isn't going to have much of a choice anymore. A famous (but also very corrupt) detective, Mr. Fujisawa has recently acquired a potent new date-ra pe drug known as Yellow Star - a drug he plans to use over and over on his beautiful new step-daughter. SLAVE WARRIOR MAYA I & II: Maya was a normal girl, until the day she was sucked into another world and sold as a s3x slave! Tortured and degraded, Maya's only wish is to be able to return home. But destiny has more in store for her - she might be the only one who can destroy the evil Zotos!"
Volume 3 in the Cool Devices series consists of 3 chapters. The first is a bit shorter than the last 2. Honestly, I thought I was watching part of Kite in this one. Ayana looks almost exactly like Sawa from Kite. Did a little searching and Yellow Star does actually use the prototype character designs from Kite! Same director and everything. In the beginning, it's a forced relationship which then becomes one of indifference between Ayana and Mr. Fujisawa. She manages to escape his clutches but ends up in an even worse situation.
Slave Warrior Maya takes up the bulk of this DVD and has encompasses several aspects of torture, bondage, forced, tentacles, and futanari. It even manages to toss a bit of cuteness and comedy into it as well. Not one thing goes right for Maya as she's sold into slavery. In an attempt to escape from enslavement, she stumbles into a beam of light which bestows a legendary sword to her. After a brief success, she's recaptured and undergoes severe s3xual torture.
Both titles were actually enjoyable here. Not a huge fan of forced stuff, but the artwork and voicing was good. These were originally created 19 years ago! I'd definitely like to see a conclusion to the Maya series if there is one, but Google isn't finding anything for me. if you've seen Kite Uncut, you've already seen Yellow Star. Just need to watch and review Passion now!

I try not to be a grammar-junkie, but I think "saadcitystar" is trying to say that he/she's happy with their remote programming. It sounds like he/she purchased a Harmony remote with RF (radio frequency) instead of IR (infrared) that is capable of sending signals over about a 50' range and can even go through walls, cabinets, etc...
If purchasing a remote programming by itself, the service is $99.99, but if you're having other services done as well (audio setup, wall-mounting, calibration, or networking), the service actually drops down to $59.99.
Album came out back on Tuesday and it arrived on Wednesday. Love the quick shipping here.
Hide and Seek isn't quite the same as previous albums from The Birthday Massacre. Couple of the songs have a little bit darker feeling to them, but the overall sounds took me back to music from the 80's and early 90's. Really loving it.
Wouldn't really say that there's any songs that just jump out at you, but it actually works out good for this CD. Really enjoying every single song so I can just keep the entire thing going on repeat. Would be nice to have a killer hit like "Blue" or "Red Stars" thrown in, but the whole thing more than makes up for it.
There's also a Vinyl version available as well, but you'll have to order that through other means if you want it. Definitely recommend this one to any fans.
Have to update this as I've had this CD going for the past month in my car. Truely great CD. Very little pops out because all of the songs are so good. Should have given this one 5 stars.
This release from the chilling anime series Gunslinger Girl includes all 13 episodes of the show's first season, following the girls of the Social Welfare Agency, who appear from the outside to be orphaned schoolgirls, but are actually trained to be cold blooded killers. Extras with the release include voice director commentary, textless songs, and more.

Killer girls from...
ByDvalfromClarksville, TN
Genre: Action
"Officially, the social Welfare Agency is a government sponsored corporation that's in the business of saving lives. At least, that's the ruse. In reality, it's an agency on the fringe of technology. They give terminal patients another shot at life using cybernetic implants. This conditioning process then shapes the patient into an effiecient machine for handling all of the goverment's dirty work. They've been given a second change at life, but at what cost?"
Basic plot: Little girls that were about to die have been given a second shot at life, but in return they're basically assassins for the government. The first season here doesn't really do much more than give us a character intro for 6 different girls. The story takes place in Italy which is a huge change of pace for most anime. Plot only got an average score because of the lack of one thus far.
Cinematography: The graphics are very visually appealing. Seeing everything out in the Mediteranean is a good change from the streets of Japan. The character designs themselves aren't very well done, though. They're really kind of normal. However, there's a ton of detail put into the outfits, guns, and scenery. Found it kind of odd, but the Blu-ray version is definitely nice and crisp. No jagged edges around the faces like on DVD versions.
Acting: Loved the English voice-acting and didn't touch the original Japanese. Kind of want to just to hear they're versions of each girl.
Extras: Non-existent. Not a single trailer, commentary, or even a textless opening or ending. Bare bones.
As the first reviewer posted, the story is a little disturbing. If you can get around little girls being used as military dolls, then the action is quite nice and I really enjoyed it. Just not the best series out there. Should definitely pick it up if you like anime, though.
Completely forgot about the extras on disc 2. There are actually quite a few. The voice-actor commentaries about their own characters are really enjoyable. Would bump the Extras up to 4 stars, but it wouldn't change the overall rating.
This mind-bending release from the psych-horror anime series Deadman Wonderland includes all 12 episodes of the show, following the story of a high school boy who is unjustly jailed for the murder of his class in a prison system that fits him with a collar constantly injecting him with poison. The poison can be neutralized if he can take regular doses of the antidote often enough, though these can only be obtained through prison work.

Supernatural prison
ByDvalfromClarksville, TN
Genre: Supernatural, Action, Drama Length: 12 episodes + OVA
"Ganta is the only survivor after a mysterious man in red slaughters a classroom full of teenagers. He's framed for the carnage, sentenced to die, and locked away in the most twisted prison ever built: Deadman Wonderland. And then it gets worse.
At Deadman Wonderland, convicts are forced into brutal deathmatches for the amusement of the masses, the cheers of the crowd drowning out the screams of the dismembered. Even when Ganta befriends Shiro, an unusual female inmate, his dark fate crushes all hope – until he discovers the strange ability to wield his spilled blood as a weapon. Ganta learns his new skill might be related to the murderous man in red and uncovers disturbing secrets that could expose those who stole his freedom. He's determined to see justice served – but first he'll have to fight for his life in a prison that holds a million ways to die."
Deadman Wonderland is a decent series that gained attention in America after Cartoon Network aired it on the Toonami animation block when it was reincarnated back in 2012. I caught the first 2 episodes, but never got around to watching the rest. The series is filled to the brim with blood, gore, and action. The English dialogue is pretty racy as well. It does an excellent job with the shock factor. You just know someone is about to die, but it can be a little hard to predict how it's going to happen. Sadly, the series is quite rushed and a ton of knowledge is never made known. There also isn't really a true ending. Red Man remains a mystery, sort of. What relation does Shiro and Ganta have? Don't want to spoil any of the ending, but it pops up just as many questions and doesn't really answer anything. It leave tons of room for a 2nd season, but I haven't seen anything in the works, yet.
I enjoyed the series overall even with the rushed ending and lingering questions. My brother was also a fan and admitted that he was a little confused with the entire thing. This is a great value on a pretty good series. Pick it up!

Not what I was looking for, much better
BykakkyfromHouston
Came in looking for a new portable radio. Salesman guided me to a blue-tooth speaker to connect to my phone instead. Can also use this with my MP3. Works much better than the radio would have and great sound. Helpful salesman did a bit of technology training to help me get it set up.
This set serves up every episode of the anime series Coppelion.

Great anime!
ByACEACEfromCORONA
Picture and cgi excellent. Story excellent. But I gave it 3 stars because the sound is pcm only. That means stereo not 5.1 dolby digital much less DTS. Why they don't spend the money on the sound affect on Bluray is completely troubling.
It'd be great to have more titles with full 5.1 or 7.1 dolby digital sound, but it's pretty rare outside of the big movies. Really long answer so I'll just paste the response from the animenewsnetwork for you.
Audio is important, and many fans are becoming more and more concerned with making sure that they're getting the best quality audio possible when they fork over the money for a shiny disc of their favorite show. But with so many different formats, which one is best? Which ones should you be asking for? Sometimes the difference is negligible or non-existant, other times it makes a huge difference.
Let's start with the easy one: why some shows have 5.1 mixes for the dub, but not for the original Japanese. I've answered previously on this column that most TV anime doesn't bother with anything more than a stereo (2.0) mix because the Japanese broadcast standard doesn't really support 5.1 audio, and given how big home theater systems aren't as common in Japan for a number of reasons, they generally don't bother remixing for 5.1 when it comes time to release the discs on home video. However, when making the dub, an American publisher might think 5.1 is worth the extra work. If they're already set up to do 5.1, the audio has to be remixed anyway, so it is an opportunity to have a nice added feature for dub fans.
5.1 mixes require special equipment, take a lot more time, and are harder to check for errors (and requires a lot more office space to do so), so it's often not practical to do 5.1 mixes for everything. They can also cost more money. The decision to make a 5.1 mix is made on a show-by-show basis, based on whether the Japanese is 5.1 (usually just movies and some high-end OAVs) and how much the show is predicted to sell.
As for what format in which they're stored on a disc, these days you generally see 4 different kinds of audio tracks: • Linear PCM (Completely uncompressed, basically just a WAV file. Takes up a lot of space, especially in 5.1.) • Dolby Digital (AC3) (Lower quality, like an MP3, but takes up a lot less space. Supported by DVD and Blu-ray.) • Dolby TrueHD (Blu-ray only. The full quality of the WAV file, but compressed to a more manageable size. Still much bigger than AC3, however.) • DTS Master Audio (Blu-ray only. For the end user, pretty much identical to Dolby TrueHD.)
When you make a DVD or Blu-ray, you are tasked with squeezing a lot of data onto a finite amount of space, so compression can be very important. Wasting too much bandwidth on audio means you might have to sacrifice video quality. The above compression formats are essential ways to get the most quality out of an audio track without having an unwieldy amount of data to contend with.
Audio quality obsessives swear that Dolby Digital AC3 audio has a lot of distortion and they can DEFINITELY tell a difference. I am skeptical. I've definitely heard bad AC3 encodes that definitely affected audio quality, particularly in very early DVDs, but there has never been a double-blind study that shows even audio experts can tell a difference at higher bitrates (and quite a few proving that nobody can tell at all). At any event, the presence of "lossless" audio (in either LPCM, DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD) has become an important marketing bullet point for Blu-ray discs, so whether people can REALLY tell the difference or it's all a placebo effect, who am I to argue.
