For this price range, it doesn't get much better
on June 22, 2023
Posted by: Alex
This is a large, lightweight, crisp and clear monitor. It does not have a ton of bells and whistles, but You don't need them. What it does, it does well.
Whats in the box: Everything you need. A stand (this can also use a VESA mount, which I did), all the cables, and, well, the monitor itself.
Setup: Very simple. Simply plug in the power and the source, and voila...you're up and running. This monitor has 3 inputs: 2 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort. I do wish this had USBc as well, but I knew going into it that it didn't.
Display: VERY crisp and clear. This monitor features AMD FreeSync which does help the picture quality. This monitor does NOT have a super fast refresh rate for gaming, but does feature HDR10. The color quality is good, but not amazing. However, for the price of this monitor it is beautiful. You can get higher quality, but not for this price point.
Features: Like I said, this monitor does not have a lot of gimmicky features, but what it does it does well. This monitor supports Picture in Picture and automatic input switching. The other features is a pretty robust picture adjustment mode which allows you to change color gradients and much more.
Overall: This monitor is very light, which is nice for my VESA monitor arm to be able to support such a large monitor. It does allow for headphones to be connected for passthrough of audio inputted to the monitor, but it does not have built in speakers. The picture quality for this price range of a monitor is great.

Great "basic" filter, with some advanced options
on May 24, 2023
Posted by: Alex
If you are in need of a filter that has excellent auto detection, isn't too loud, and looks fairly good while sitting there? Here you go!
Setup: to get the most out of this filter, you'll want to install the app. You can use it without it the app by using the buttons on the top of it, but to get the most out of it...get the app! The app is easy to set up. I already had another Blueair filter, so adding this one to my app was very easy. Following the instructions it only took a few minutes.
Use: You can use this in manual mode, or automatic mode. In manual mode you set the fan speed and it just sits there and runs. In automatic mode, it senses particles in the air and adjusts fan speed as needed. This filter only senses one "type" of particle (which is basically smoke and actual small particles in the air). This overall works very well. There are some higher end filters that are able to detect multiple different types of particles, but they do cost much more. If you are using the app, you are able to see what the filter is sensing, and also change modes. You can also set schedules. This filter is in my bedroom, so I have it scheduled to go into "night" mode at, well, night. This turns off the LED's on the filter, and also sets the fan to its lowest speed.
You are also able to buy different colors of "wraps" if you choose. They slip on and off the bottom (the gray part in the picture).
Overall: This is a nice filter, and isn't too noisy even on its highest setting. I set it on auto mode during the day, and it seems to sense stuff very well. I burned some food cooking (which is on the floor below), and I went upstairs and it was on high working to clean the room. 30 or so minutes later, it was back down on low.

excellent hardwood to carpet transition
on May 24, 2023
Posted by: Alex
For those of you that do not have a great space to mount a vacuum, this is a great way to hide one in plane sight.....while having it auto empty at the same time!
What's in the box: The all in one stand with extra bags, vacuum body, floor brush, and two attachments.
Setup: Very easy. Taking everything out of the box only took a few minutes. There is a LOT in the box. Plug in the base, snap in the extension wand and you're good to go!
Use and features: Besides the auto emptying (which I'll get to), I really like the brush roll on this vacuum. There is a small duster type roller on the front of it that VASTLY improves hard floor vacuuming while leaving the brush roll on. You are unable to turn off the brush roll; however, you don't really need to anymore. The addition of this small roller makes vacuuming hard floors so much better. No longer is the brush roll slinging small pieces of cat litter or dirt around. Also, there is a small screen that indicates battery run time remaining. No longer will you be wondering how much longer you can vacuum for. You now have a (albeit estimated) countdown timer that indicates what time you have left. The other buttons you have are the power (on/off), and suction power adjustments (up/down).
Cleaning performance from this vacuum is great. I have no issues vacuuming up cat hair and other normal dirt that comes into the house. And transitioning between carpet and hardwood works well.
Ok, so you have a bin full of dust, hair, dirt and who knows what else.....time to empty it. In every other stick vacuum I've had this becomes dirty and gross pretty quickly. You have to dig into the container and pull stuff out (re: cat hair). This is where the auto emptying stand comes in handy. you simply place the vacuum on the stand (oh...and this also charges it!), and press the empty button. The stand then uses its own suction power to empty the vacuum. Quick and easy and not dirty at all!
Overall: I really like this vacuum. The hardwood to carpet transition and the auto emptying are my favorite features. I just wish the stand had somewhere to hold the wand attachments, I had to put them in a closet drawer.

Very good, just know what you are getting
on May 8, 2023
Posted by: Alex
Overall, the Gen3 Oura ring is a great health tracker, with a few faults.
What's in the box: The ring, a charging stand and a getting started guide.
Getting started: First of all, SIZE YOUR RING! Don't guess. Get the free sizing kit and wear around a couple sizes for a day and get a good pick on the size. Once you have done this and receive the actual ring, setup is a piece of cake. Download the app and charge the ring on the stand. With the ring on the stand you fire up the app and follow the steps. It just takes a few minutes.
Use: the Gen3 can measure quite a few factors including motion, heart rate, body temperature and blood oxygen level. It uses these measurements throughout the day to determine a few factors and will give you overall scores. The "main" score is the readiness score which combines all the factors from the previous day and gives you an overall look at your readiness for the day. Also scored daily are sleep and activity.
Readiness score: This combines a multitude of factors including resting heart rate, heart rate variability, body temperature, recovery, sleep and previous days activity. Combining all of this information will give you a score which is essentially a number from 0-100. Anything above 85 is optimal, below that is getting to the point where you need to recover more. If you get a lower score, the app will tell you what part effected the score and what you need to work on "recovering".
Sleep Score: This combines total sleep, how quickly you fall asleep and how much REM, deep and light sleep you have. As well as what time you go to sleep and awake. The ring is very sensitive to movement, as well as heart rate and body temperature. In the couple weeks I've been using the ring, it seems to be fairly accurate in my sleep detection. The ring does automatically detect when you go to sleep and when you wake up, and it is very accurate. It will also detect naps and adjust your sleep and readiness scores.
Activity: Here is where it does faulter some. Think of the ring as more of a sleep and overall movement tracker, that also does some activity tracking. This is not your main activity tracker, nor does it sync with any devices to provide heart rate during a workout (other than internally on the app, and not very well at that). I still use a watch when I'm actively working out, and using the apple health app it will transfer information back and forth. Also, when doing workouts with weights, you DO NOT want to wear rings anyway. The app provides some basic active activity tracking such as an outdoor walk, but thats about it. You can't, for example, use it to track your heart rate (very well) during a spin class.
Battery life and charging: I tend to get 4-5 days of battery life out of the ring. Since there is no screen you must rely on the app to check battery status. You do run the possibility of having the watch die and you not knowing, and then losing out of valuable tracking information. You will get a notification on your phone to charge the ring, but if you receive that when you are not able to charge it....chances are you'll forget. The down side to not charging it nightly is you are not in a habit of charging it, and you can easily forget. The good part of the charging is it is very quick. You'll be back up and running within 30 minutes.
With all of this in mind. The ring is very good. Do not plan to use it as your main activity tracker and you will be fine. This is very good at all other aspects, and does track sleep better than my previous watch based tracker.

Works well, but needs a battery gauge
on February 27, 2023
Posted by: Alex
Very basic battery pack, but love the magsafe connection on the back. Overall, its very simple to use, but there are some flaws. There is an on off button on the side (more like a push to wake if you need to), a kickstand and an in/out USB C plug.
This battery is primarily for users with a magsafe compatible phone, it will work with other devices, but its designed for use with the magnet. You are able to plug in one cabled device via the USB C, or charge other QI enabled wireless charging devices. There is also a little kickstand, but more on that.
pros: easy to use. just slap on the back of your phone and it starts charging (usually, sometimes you have to press the button on the side, but that's not very often). You can also just plug into the USB port and charge away. If you have two devices connected (one magnet one cable), but they will not charge simultaneously. The wired device will charge to full, then the wireless device will start to charge. The battery life is good, its more than 3 times the battery life of the OEM magsafe charger, BUT it does weigh quite a bit more.
Cons: there are a handful of annoying quirks with this battery. There is no battery gauge. On the side of the device there is a simple green/red LED. While charging, the light will pulse then turn solid green when charged. The light will also turn red when the battery is low. That is it. No level while charging, you have no idea how charged it is until full. Same goes for the reverse, you have on idea what is left with the battery until its dead. There is a kickstand, which is nice, but the orientation makes it so the volume rockers on the phone are on the bottom. Unless you have headphones that can adjust the volume, it makes it a little more difficult to adjust volume.
overall: I wish there was a battery gauge of some sort on it. It makes it difficult to use because of this. Other than that, I can get over the other quirks of it, but the lack of a gauge is quite annoying.
Pros:

top of the line mesh system, easy to set up
on October 28, 2022
Posted by: Alex
This is an easy to set up router that supports the new 6 ghz wireless band, as well as 2.5 gig wired support. The problem there....you probably don't have a device that can support that (yet).
I have a 3 story townhome, so this three pack was perfect: one for each floor. They are able to be connected via a wired or 6 ghz wireless backhaul to connect together. Obviously, you get better performance wired, but not everyone is able to support that.
My test setup is as follows: floor 1 is the gateway (main) Eero, the 2nd floor connected via wire, the 3rd floor connected wirelessly.
Setup: VERY easy for a wireless router. This is, though, a ROUTER and not a modem. You must have either a modem, or a broadband provider that provides an ethernet connection into the home in order to use this. My broadband service provides an ethernet connection into the home, which made setup even easier. One downfall, you MUST use a device that can support the Eero app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Once you have the app, you open it and follow the directions. It is seriously very easy. You start with the gateway Eero, which is the one connected to the internet. This does, however, use one of the two ethernet ports, which leaves only one for a wired connection. If you need more than the one, you'll have to purchase a separate ethernet switch. They are cheap, but it's not an elegant solution looks wise if that matters. Each Eero unit has 2 ethernet ports, so if you use a wireless backhaul you'll have two ports on each of the other units to use. Back to the setup....the app guides you though. Plug in the Eero, tap add and it uses bluetooth to find a device to set up. You simply name the first device, name your wifi network, and you're off and running. Add more devices until you are done and bingo.
Customization: You use the app to make settings. This is a partial downfall as there is no built in GUI or anything to use to setup the wifi, you must use the app. This is easy to use, just be aware you have to use an app. Inside the app, you are able to customize quite a few things, but there is a not a huge pro level amount here. You are able to add a guest network, port forwarding, IP address reservations and a little more. You cannot, though, split the wifi band or change channels.
Speed: I do not have any devices that can take advantage of the 6ghz wireless, but am excited to try. I have 1 gig broadband speed, and I test what I expect. With wireless devices, I am able to see download speeds of 300-600 gigs, which is expected. If I connect a computer via ethernet, I test in the 800-900 range. So, right on point.
Connection strength: As a mesh system, this is supposed to take care of holes in the wifi network. I Have a 2500 square foot townhome divided in 3 levels. I have one dead zone that I cannot figure out. Well, maybe not a true deadzone, but it is a spot that it seems to struggle with changing to the correct device. It is the 3rd floor on the opposite side of where the Eero device is. If I walk up the stairs, and go immediately to that area, my device will show wifi strength, but with no connectivity. It takes a couple minutes to settle down and then I will eventually get back online, just at slower speeds. I'm hoping this will improve, as I understand it takes mesh systems time to "settle" in. Also, none of my devices are in an optimum spots. They are blocked by some metal and other object, so I will give them that.
App: you use the app to set up the devices, and are also able to see some usage activity. You can see data usage by device, and in a weekly overview of total data used.
Pay to play: There is an option where you can pay dollars per year to "unlock" some more features. I'm not sure that it is worth it. For one hundred dollars a year, you are able to see daily, weekly and monthly data usage. You are also able to connect a domain name to an ip address if you have a use for a DDNS service. There are also some more security features and content filters that you can use if you have a family. You can set up profiles and assign them to a MAC address (such as a Childs computer or iPad). You can then set up restrictions for them. easy to use, but I have no use for it.
Overall: I am happy with this system. Very easy to setup, and I am able to see some useful info in the app. Speeds are great, and I'm excited to see the difference of wifi 6 when I get a device that supports it

Great coffee pot that does what it does well
on October 10, 2022
Posted by: Alex
This is a nice coffee pot. It also knows that it is a coffee pot and doesn't try to be crazy fancy with features you'll never use.
What's in the box: Not much more than you would expect. The coffee maker and glass carafe, charcoal water filter, as well as a permanent mesh coffee filter.
Use: This is a fairly simple machine, with a few different settings that you might actually use.....mainly in the size of brew area. There is a dial in which you select how much coffee you want to make (anywhere from a single cup to a full carafe). If you use anything smaller than the carafe, you can flip down a holder for a cup so you don't have the splashing (as well as don't have the cup on the hot plate). Also available are a few different brew modes including gold and bold. I always use gold as it has a nice balance of taste.
One thing different than I'm use to: The slider above the carafe that is the manual drip stop. I'm used to automatic drip stops, but those seem to always have a couple rouge drips. With this unit, after the brew cycle is done, you flip the switch over to drip stop. If you forget to do this you WILL get drips onto the hot plate, so you need to remember. But once you get used to needed to do this, you never get drips. It is a tradeoff, but once I remember to flip the switch, I have yet to have a drip onto the hot plate.
Overall: I like this coffee maker. It is not crazy fancy, and it doesn't pretend to be what it's not. It does have a glass carafe vs. a thermal one, but you know that going into it. The brew cycle doesn't take too long, and being able to brew a cup at a time is nice in a pinch if you'd like.

Neato D10's 300 minute runtime, covering 2,700 square feet on a single charge, makes it ideal for large homes. You can't use circles to clean a square corner. Neato's D-shape allows for a 70% larger brush than those found in round robots along with an industry-leading 0.70 liter dirt bin that holds more dirt between cleanings. Neato D10 offers corner-to-corner and edge-to-edge cleaning in a short amount of time and its unique Helix multi-surface brush is now 50% quieter on hard surfaces. Neato D10 offers 60% greater dirt pickup than D3 & D5. The powerful performance is combined with an easy-to-clean true HEPA filter that captures up to 99.97% of allergens and fine dust particles as small as 0.3 microns. Equipped with energy-saving Eco Mode for general vacuuming to high-performance Turbo Mode and D10's exclusive new Max Mode means Neato's D10 gets the job done. Overall very good, with room for improvement
on October 10, 2022
Posted by: Alex
This isn't my first rodeo with a neato, it has been a few years though so I was looking forward to this new robot vacuum.
What's in the box: vacuum, docking station, extra filters and a getting started guide.
Setup: Actually, very easy. I have had other robot vacuums (or IoT devices in general) that are not always easy or user friendly to set up. This, I have to say, was very easy. Plug in the dock, peel off some protective layers on the vacuum, download the app and follow the instructions. It even uses bluetooth for the initial setup and wifi sync, which makes it very easy. All in all It took less than 10 minutes from opening the box to the vacuum on the app.
Use: The first time you use the vacuum, you need to have it run a mapping session. Once the mapping session is done, you can set no-go zones, and name other zones. The app, though, still uses basic boxes for setting up zones, and doesn't automatically create zones like other brands. This is both a pro and a con as it is very customizable, but isn't quite as fast. Once they are set up, its just set and forget though.
Vacuum: The smartness of the neato hasn't improved much over the years from what I can tell. It still uses the front bumper quite a bit as it can't judge distance as well as compared to some other brands with visual type cameras rather than just the LIDAR. With that said, it still navigates well and doesn't (very often) get stuck. The vacuum power has 3 different suction modes, and doesn't automatically adjust if it is on carpet or solid surface. I have wood floors, so it just runs on eco mode and manages to pick most everything up. The little side brush doesn't always spin though, and seems to not spin more often than it spins. there are a few rooms I have it skip because I'm afraid of it scratching the transition between rooms as it is a little bit of a hump; however, I don't think any robot vacuum could jump the hump that I have very easily, so not faulting the neato bandito.
Battery life: Great. It cleans approx 700 square feet and only uses 25% or so of its battery. It can go back and re-charge and continue if you have a larger floor plan and need more battery life.
Cons: There are a few things I feel this is lacking for its price range: Auto emptying dust container being the biggest one. And slightly better navigation that doesn't rely on the bumper as much.
Overall: Vacuum works well and respects boundaries once the floor is mapped. There is definite room for improvement as the technology feels a little old on this, but is still a nice vacuum.

my favorite mouse
on September 28, 2022
Posted by: Alex
I love this mouse. I also had its predecessor, which was my favorite until this one.
What's in the box: the mouse itself, usb charging cable, receiver dongle.
Setup: VERY easy. You can connect this mouse via bluetooth for basic setup, with no extra software needed. You can also install the Logitech software to unlock all of the features. You do NOT need to use the dongle, but can if your computer does not have the required bluetooth hardware. Windows and Mac OS will also automatically pop up with the link to download the Logitech software if you'd like. This mouse can connect to 3 separate devices, and you switch with a simple button click on the bottom of the mouse.
Use: Again, I love this mouse. The grip is very comfortable, with a nice feel. The two scroll wheels are made out of metal, and the rest of the buttons are a nice feeling plastic. The main scroll wheel has a nice click to it, and has a user adjustable speed at which the click goes away and it free wheels. You can also push a button to make it always free wheeling. The side scroll wheel does a horizontal scroll, and next to that wheel has two buttons which are adjustable but I use them for forwards and backwards (web page browsing for example). This is a laser mouse, but somehow, via magic, is able to be used on glass. This updated version also has insanely quiet . Insanely.
Overall: Get this mouse. battery life is amazing and the feeling is great.

Excellent stick vacuum, with some sneaky features

Here is yet another stick vacuum on the market; however, hold on for a second....this one has some things going for it.
What's in the box: Surprisingly, a lot. The box is fairly small, but whomever was in charge of packing the box obviously is a world champion Tetris player. I mean this in a good way since there are quite a few things included. Two batteries, charging stand, brush head, and two crevice cleaners are included.
Setup: Although there are quite a few parts, setup was fairly straightforward. You click together the stand, click together the vacuum and insert the battery(s). You can then set up wifi, if you want, to get a few more features.....most of which I don't use...more on that.
Use: Overall it is fairly straight forward...it is just a stick vacuum after all. There are a few things, though, that I really like. One of those things is the two batteries. If you really want to get your clean on, you simply swap batteries when the first one dies. The second battery charges in its own spot on the charging stand, so both are always charged. I will say, battery life is what you would expect with a stick vacuum. It's not like they included two because the one.....sucks (see what I did there?). The buttons are easy to use. Push to turn on, and then use the other two to change the suction power. You can hold the "plus" sign one for a few sections and turn on turbo boost; however, this will cause you to go running for the second battery fairly soon after....but it is very powerful for a stick vacuum.
Unique features: Besides the two batteries (see above), there are the wifi features, the extendable "tube" and a little flappy pushy doodad that helps empty the dust container. The wifi features are..neat...but I found after setting it up I don't use it. On the LG Home app you can see the charge status, how long you've used the vacuum for, and a few other stats. Nothing that I found very useful other than "oh thats neat". The extendable tube I both like, and dislike. I like because it makes the vacuum compact and easier to store. What I don't like, is that the button/slider you use to extend the tube is a little quirky. It sometimes took me a few tries to get it to extend. That dirt container thing? I LOVE. You open the bottom of the container and push down on a slider that pushes all (most) of the dirt and hair right out and into the trash. No more digging in and going on a hunt trying to empty it out.
Overall: I really like this stick vacuum. Besides the extending tube quirk, I love everything else about it and that quirk is not enough for me to give it 4 stars rather than 5.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Night Owl 8-Channel Security System: Safeguard your home or small business against intruders with this Night Owl security system, which includes 4 high-definition cameras that connect using your existing coaxial cables for easy upgrades from an analog system.

Do I have to have wifi or internet for these to work at all

No, but you will not be able to view them remotely on your phone/tablet.

With no internet, you can still view the cameras on the screen that is attached to the DVR

if I have all 4 cameras running 24/7 in my store - primarily as theft deterrant - how many hours/days does 1T provide?

Probably around two weeks. I have 8 cameras on mine, and I can get 7-9 days.

Dyson V6 Motorhead Bagless Cordless Stick Vacuum: This powerful stick vacuum's direct-drive cleaner head provides 75% more brush bar power than the Dyson V6 vacuum. The wand easily detaches for handheld cleaning and the docking station charges the vacuum so it's always ready to use.

How do you switch out of Boost mode?

I may have accidentally pressed the Boost button while connecting the right sweeping tool. I was not able to switch the Boost mode off. I had to use the vacuum in Boost mode that ran out of battery in 6 minutes and then I have to recharge for 3 and half hours. Is it possible to switch off the Boost mode?
in order to turn it on or off you have to do it while holding the trigger.

with one had, pull the trigger to turn the vacuum on, with your other hand press the "max" button on the back, the unit will switch back and forth. There is a blue ring lit up around the max button when max mode is on.
