A Soild thought not Exceptional Follow Up

Hot on the heels of the quintessential Norwegian N@zi zombie classic comes this direct sequel. Red Vs. Dead. The first film's single survivor runs into trouble as he flees the scene from the first film and is chased by a platoon of rotting whermacht. If that wasn't bad enough, through a strange turn of events he ends up in the hospital with a zombie arm attached to him and is under arrest for the murder of his friends. Red Vs. Dead is more slapstick than camp and those looking for gore and laughs will find both here. This version was filmed in English so those who can't read and watch a movie will not have to suffer through an awful dub. Not everything works in Dead Snow 2 and the original's charm is missing. It leans heavily on tropes and old ideas inducing the occasional groan. Even still, it's entertaining enough to remain enjoyable for fans of the genre.

The Whole is Worth Less than it's Individual Parts

On paper, The Counselor seems like the thriller to end all thrillers but it practice it leaves audiences wanting. It's fragmented start slowly comes together to tell the tale of a man who has simply bit off more than he can chew and he pays the price for it. It's the kind of movie that doesn't explicitly spell out everything that's happening so mouth breathers should not bother watching at all. For everyone else, this is a film that will leave you wanting. It's not bad but it certainly isn't No Country for Old Men.
My Best Buy number: 2208119638
What's great about it: Excellent cast, excellent director, script penned by one of America's greatest contemporary novelists...
What's not so great: It doesn't come together as well as it should...

One of 2013's Best

Frankly it's criminal that Captain Phillips, Philomena and American Hustle all received best picture nods at the Oscars while the Cohen Bros. latest effort, Inside Llewyn Davis was snubbed. It's a heartbreaking and beautiful time capsule that takes audiences back to 1960's Greenwich village New York where a young man navigates the perils of trying to break into the music business. The performances are excellent and the soundtrack is top notch. This is truly a gem that has flown under most people's radar do to limited press and no love from various award ceremonies.
My Best Buy number: 2208119638
What's great about it: Excellent Soundtrack, excellent performances, heartbreaking but with a healthy dose of humor
What's not so great: could use a few more special features...

Anti-Eroticism

Like him, love him, or hate him, Lars Von Trier has been responsible for some of the most interesting cinema in the past 30 years. His newest effort, Nymphomanic Vol I and II have courted controversy and received some acclaim. Both parts tell one single continuous story that total four hours. It's a large investment but it's sure to sear itself into viewers memories with some moments that push the boundaries of what most expect to see in a film. It's not pornography but it is explicit in a way that most films wouldn't dare be. This two disc set gives you both films with beautiful transfers and a small selection of special features. An uncut version is due later this year and will probably the version to get for those who enjoy this film.
My Best Buy number: 2208119638
What's great about it: Huge cast, ambitious
What's not so great: Buckles under it's own weight, can be off putting for those not acquanted with Von Trier

One of the Best Action Films in Years...
on September 8, 2014

Following the events of the first film, The Raid 2 ties up a few loose ends and proceeds forward with a far more grand vision than it's humble predecessor. Spanning two and half hours this out does the first film with a high body count, blood and guts galore and some real tension. Don't let the subtitles scare you away, this film is seriously satisfying, offering better action than The Expendables while being well crafted enough to come off like Indonesia's version of The Godfather.

What's great about it: Non stop action, gritty realistic tone
What's not so great: Waiting for part 3...

An Often Overlooked Scorsese Classic
on September 8, 2014

This 35th anniversary of The King of Comedy is much improved from the standard definition release on DVD. It's a film about one guy's obsession to make it big by getting a slot on a late night tv show hosted by Jerry Langford. Since Langford isn't giving DeNiro's Pupkin the time of day, he forges an uneasy alliance with another fan and kidnaps the host. DeNiro is excellent as the crazed Pupkin and this role represents a departure from the roles that many people associate him with. While a great film, King of Comedy doesn't exactly find itself on par with Goodfellas, The Departed, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and The Wolf of Wallstreet.
My Best Buy number: 2208119638
What's great about it: DeNiro is nuts, improved picture and sound
What's not so great: It's good but not Goodfeallas or Raging Bull good.

Ford and Wayne on Blu Ray
on June 16, 2014

from San Antonio, TX
John Ford and John Wayne have collaborated on so many classic films that The Horse Soldiers may not immediate come to mind when thinking about this legendary director/actor duo. Like Shoe Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Fort Apache, it's a Calvary movie which turns away some fans of the western genre but The Horse Soldiers is an enjoyable film inhabited by some memorable characters. This blu ray does an acceptable job of presenting the film though it lacks some of the sharpness of other films and there are some artifacts in some areas. The bigger disappointment is the lack of special features however. Some historical insight to the film's production and it's place in film history would have been nice.
My Best Buy number: 2208119638
What's great about it: A classic film from one of the greatest American film makers of all time
What's not so great: No special features and the video quality will not astound

Not to be Confused with Memories of Murder...
on June 9, 2014
Posted by: AnalogReviews
from San Antonio, TX
I purchased Confessions of Murder wanted a dark and gritty thriller in the style of Silence of the lambs, Se7en and Memories of Murder. Watching a film with specific expectations is generally a poor idea and I relearned that after viewing this genre mash up from South Korea. The opening scene set me up for satisfaction with a tense and beautifully filmed chase in the rain as a detective pursues a serial killer. The killer escapes and after the statue of limitations on his crimes expires, he writes a book detailing his crimes and it's met with extreme praise, turning the murderer into a celebrity and sending the detective into a furious rage. One of the killers victims was never found and the emergence of the killer is a chance for the detective to find the last body and earn some sort of redemption. Meanwhile, the victim's families band together to kill the murderer resulting in a bit of slapstick humor and over the top Die Hard style action as the detective intervenes a saves the killer for his own purposes. This mess culminates with a silly plot twist and a few extra revelations are thrown into the mix, presumably to intended to be some tour de force conclusion by the films writers and director but instead is reeks of desperation. After seeing so many great Korean films Confessions of Murder was a huge disappointment.
What's great about it: Strong Opening
What's not so great: The script is a mess. Attempting to combine action, drama and comedy in the worst possible way
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

1976's Best picture winner and it's five sequels come packaged together in a nice slim blu ray case with a fair price tag. While I would argue that Raging Bull and The Wrestler are better sports films because of their focus on out of the ring drama rather than focusing on the comparatively dull and binary outcome of winning or loosing, Rocky is a fantastically motivating tale of personal triumph. The subsequent five films continue the adventures of the loveable and dopy Italian Stallion. While 2 and 3 are solid films, 4 is a bit silly in an oh-so-bad-it's-good kind of way. As for Rocky 5 and Balboa... Well they are kind of embarrassing. A low price and a nice remaster of the first film make this collection worth buying.
My Best Buy number: 2208119638
What's great about it: Newly Remastered Rocky, Rocky IV is One of Cinema's Best Guilty Pleasures
What's not so great: Rocky V, Rocky Balboa, Raging Bull is vastly Superior

More yakuza drama from Beat Takeshi
on April 7, 2014
Posted by: AnalogReviews
from San Antonio, TX
Takeshi Kitano is one of Japan's major stars and for over 20 years he has bee directing Yakuza films that are notable for their nihilism and long build ups to abrupt and staggeringly violent climaxes. Beyond Outrage is the first sequel to any of his yakuza films; picking up immediately after his film Outrage (which you should watch first). Beyond Outrage mixes up some classic elements from Japanese cinema, such as a detective who seems to think he is like Toshiro Mifune's Yojimbo and can manipulate rival yakuza families into destroying one another, and crime film tropes. While it is still enjoyable for fans of the genre, there is really nothing new to see here and Kitano's style is probably the reason this is even an enjoyable film at all. Video and audio are strong (no surprise since this is a new movie) and the blu ray does offer an hour long making of feature which is more than we tend to get from non-criterion foreign film releases. I can only confidently recommend this to fans of Kitano and yakuza films.
What's great about it: Takeshi's Signature style
What's not so great: Not nearly as great as his earlier works like Fireworks and Sonatine
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
