So much customization in a small lamp
on May 30, 2022
Posted by: CPWoody
Every once in a while I stumble upon a product that I think will be a cool addition to my lighting collection and this is definitely one I'm pleasantly surprised by. Don't let the fact that you've probably never heard of Govee be a detractor to picking up this product. The setup process using the Govee Home app was extremely easy and opens the door to a significant amount of customization (and I'm being conservative by saying significant) that the lamp has. There is a dizzying array of custom settings ranging from nature & life to colors of your favorite food ingredients. While I"m not sure anyone needs quite this much flexibility with their lighting, it's pretty impressive how they can get some of them to pull off. As I sit here looking at "Kitchen Aroma" which truly looks like smoke coming off a cooking dish, I'm more than intrigued with what is going on inside the lamp that I can't see than ever. Regardless of where you decide to put it in your home, this is the kind of lamp that kids are going to love and adults who enjoy cool gadgets too!

Extremely easy to use and very intuitive

I have a historic loft and one of the things I struggle with most in the space is air purification. While I have some larger units in other areas of the loft, I wanted an air purifier that was capable of covering the square footage of my home office only. In looking around I found that the Shark was one I'd never seen before but a brand I've trusted with other aspects of my household for many years now.
Right out of the box I found that this unit was extremely easy to use. For setup, you simply turn the handle on the bottom to access the air filter, unpackage it, screw it back in and off you go. The automatic function on the unit "reads" the air and sets the fan speeds according to what's going on in the air around you. This is great compared to other units I have that seem to only run at one speed - full blast - and the unit is whisper quiet while it's doing its thing.
You have real time visualization of air health using the percentage display on the front of the unit as well as touch buttons across the top for when you want to take over the functionality manually.
All in all I would say that this unit is a great value for the price and is very much a "set it and forget it" type of product that should be very easy to use and maintain.

Flawlessly connected, Fiercely protected. Austere is moving beyond the primary function of providing power, to a place where performance, safety, and design come together to define what you should expect in power. Using our PureFiltration technology, Austere Power cleans noise and artifacts, that can travel through power lines and keeps them from impacting your devices. In addition, the Omniport USB provides rapid charge and protection for low-voltage devices. Austere also employs flameless MOV circuits and thermal protected outlets, keeping you safe from a home electrical fire. And if anything were to happen, our Component Guarantee promises to protect your equipment from damage, regardless of its value, whenever your devices are plugged into an Austere Power product. And because how it looks is as important as what it does, Austere’s proprietary aDesign philosophy elevates function through purposeful engineering and sleek design. Our surge protector power strips have a brushed aluminum housing, which creates an elegant way to power your home electronic devices. Always. Not all power is created equal. You may not know it, but your surge protectors can wear out over time. Joules–the protective layer of energy that defends your components–are finite. And when they are gone, it leaves your system completely unprotected from shock or surge. Traditional surge protectors only last a year or two so if you can’t remember when you last refreshed your home’s power, it’s likely time to do it now. And to take out the guesswork of when your Austere Power needs to be replaced, the blue protection shield icon on the Power unit will cease to illuminate once the Joules have been used. But that won’t happen for a long time because Austere Power is rated to last more than five times as long as most power products and guarantees to safeguard your system with our Component Guarantee.

Plenty of options for charging everything!

I selected the Austere to replace one of my older power strips that I was confident had seen better days. Initially I was apprehensive as this particular location has a number of larger, odd sized power adapters and most surge protectors I’ve used lose an outlet or two to hold them all.
In this case the outlets on the Austere are spaced ideally and I was able to maximize my utilization plus change how i charge my phone and watch in the process. Having the USB and USB-C ports on the front makes this unit infinitely more useful. Charging my devices off these ports seems to take the same amount of time or less than when using the manufacturer supplied power blocks, and the whole thing is just cleaner thanks to how the ports are located.
It is evident that this is a higher end product from the minute you take it out of the box. The design is heavier and well built, which gives me a sense of quality compared to the garden variety surge protection devices out there. I think you’ll get what you pay for with the Austere for sure.

Stunning sound and great looks

It takes a lot to impress me when it comes to a streaming audio device. I have a whole house full of a competing product but I’m always looking for something better than what their sound is. When I had the opportunity to try out the latest Zeppelin I got really excited! B&W has been a staple audio system in a number of my cars over the years and I hoped I’d be just as impressed at home.
The truth is - I’ve never heard better sound come out of a device of this size! Audio is crisp, full bodied, and fills my office very well. It is very easy to set up thanks to being AirPlay compatible and I can throw any of my normal sources at it without a hiccup. It’s also gorgeous and lives in the background of all my video calls at home, where it has become a conversation piece as much as a functional device.
If you’re looking for a beautiful streaming audio speaker with incredible sound to match, this is the one you want.

High performance with frustrating setup
on February 20, 2022
Posted by: CPWoody
from Dallas, TX
I have a 2400 square foot loft that I’m constantly struggling with the Wi-Fi being strong enough from one end to the other. In doing my research I found this latest and greatest Netgear Orbi system would check all of the boxes in terms of latest technology, most features, and simplified setup.
Two of the three were right but maybe the last one proved to be very challenging. First things first - if you are using a gateway from your service provider that already includes Wi-Fi, you’ll have to make some adjustments inside the system to allow you to connect fully. The NetGear app had me thinking my system was up only to find it wasn’t passing through correctly and devices couldn’t access any sites or over the top services due to security certificate errors.
That leads me to the app itself - it worked once and never worked again. At this point it still says my system is set up. I have to go around it through the web browser to get the system up and this becomes frustrating every time the power happens to go off around here.
That all being said - when it works, it works great. Device traffic around here is pretty heavy and I see both higher speeds and less bandwidth choking when multiple devices are streaming. The added benefit of the network ports on the back of the satellites means my TV and gaming device can run off wired connections and improves stability.
Overall I’d say it’s a great product functionally but the user experience is likely to give you some heartburn depending on how your internet provider works.

Definitely not a toy

I have to say I was a bit ambitious in thinking I’d be able to hop right on the Hover 1 and be zipping around my apartment hallways.
The truth is it has been about two weeks and I’m still trying to get the hang of moving more than a few feet without falling off. That makes it a little awkward to review this item but I’ll focus on the positives.
The unit works as described, with the lighting, Bluetooth speakers, and overall controls being easy enough to use. Instructions are provided and serve as a useful getting started for anyone who has never been on one of these before.
This is not a product for your children if you’re not going to be around to make sure they are operating safely during this acclimation period. A helmet is not just recommended - it’s essential, because they WILL fall at least a couple times in the process. I can tell you i banged a shoulder up pretty good in my first day.
Bottom line - your kids will love it once they get the hang of it and if you’re an adult you’ll want to protect your body parts accordingly.

Highs and lows
on January 6, 2022

I picked up this printer as a backup for my existing color laser printer since cartridges for it can be very expensive. This HP is super compact, incredibly easy to set up, and supports mobile printing from your phone or tablet with ease. I was definitely impressed by how quickly I was up and running. Print quality is very respectable for a lower end laser printer and compares well with my more expensive printer.
Where i run into a major setback is the concept that HP is using to sell printers these days. The unit is firmware locked so that you cannot use cartridges other than HP brand, with a strong preference toward you subscribing to their instant ink service. I truly believe if you buy a printer then once the warranty expires you should be able to use whatever cartridge you want. I’d rather pay more for a product that I can use flexibly than to be trapped in a subscription for something I use infrequently.
That being said - if you print regularly the math for instant ink might work well for you. I’d recommend checking out the HP website ahead of time and thinking it through.

MagGo Magetic Portable 5K Battery with Bracket is both a charger and a stand, specifically for your MagSafe compatible iPhone 12 & 13. Using new technology, this can magnetically attach to the back of your phone, providing it a wireless charge along with a strong attachment. The battery also has a bracket that folds out, so that you can stand your phone up wherever you want.

Almost enough juice

So when i compare this to the branded accessory (i have both) the functionality and charging capability are vastly better. Aside from the fact that it simply stays connected magnetically much better, the fold out kickstand proves more useful on your desk or an airplane than i would have expected.
My only wish is that it had a little more capacity, as it will take my iPhone 13 pro from low battery to just short of a full charge and be completely spent.
I like it enough that i now have one in both of my cars so that if I’m out somewhere and my battery is low I know i have a backup plan.
Definitely recommended!

Consistent heat and grill marks
on December 2, 2021
Posted by: CPWoody
from Dallas, TX
I’ve had a few of these kinds of products before and I’ve been searching for one that I’d actually want to keep for a while now. This unit does what so many others have promised - actual grill marks! The heating is consistent across the grill and temperature heats up quickly. The unit is intuitive, comes with extensive instructions and a lot of extras in the box from a meat thermometer to tongs - something i didn’t know i needed until I was already into my first cooking project.
Thankfully that project was a huge success, with my grilled octopus turning the right amount of crisp on the outside and perfectly done inside. It was as good as what I had at a fancy restaurant before and I attribute that to the Cosori 100%.
I’m looking forward to trying a few of the other settings to see if it could also replace my air fryer, since the max temp is 100 degrees higher and seems more capable.
All in all i think this is a great solution for apartment dwellers or anyone else who doesn’t have the ability to grill outside.

Great idea - mixed execution
on November 20, 2021
Posted by: CPWoody
from Dallas, TX
So I picked these up thinking they might be useful when out for a walk and not wanting headphones that cut off my ability to hear other sounds like cars and bikes approaching.
From my perspective, the audio quality is fair at best. The max volume you get out of them is pretty low and in reality they get overpowered by other sounds around you. The sound quality itself is also pretty mediocre, and I’d not let the “open surround” marketing lead you to believe otherwise. It’s better for calls than for music by far, so I guess it depends on your expected purpose.
The design itself is interesting, with a charging setup that is very easy to use and the included case was a nice touch even if it required a bit of fiddling to stay closed. I found the frames weren’t a great fit for my face so I’d recommend finding a way to try them on before purchase much like you would a regular pair of sunglasses to see if you like how they look on you.
Overall - great concept, but disappointed enough in the sound quality that they won’t get much use.

Create, control, and champion your playstyle with the new Razer Basilisk V3—the quintessential ergonomic gaming mouse for customized performance. With 10+1 programmable buttons, a dual-mode tilt scroll wheel, and a heavy dose of Razer Chroma RGB, it's time to light up the competition your way.

Is it normal for this mouse to make clicking noises when the computer boots up? It clicks as if I were toggling the scroll mode, but I'm not touching the mouse.

I don’t know about whether or not it’s normal but mine does it too. Didn’t even put two and two together until i read your question. It sounds like the clutch on the scroll wheel engaging and disengaging as the power to the USB port changes.
