Good solid jazz fusion from one of the originators. While there is not a bad song on the album, there aren't any real standout songs either. Nice smooth jazz but kinda background music as well. I would recommend but only to genre fans.
This cd opens up with super-funky title track giving it a kick start I had not heard from Midon before. Some other nice stuff also before closing with a distinctive take on Fly Like an Eagle. Nice cd.
Frankly, I was surprised at how spiritual the album is. That's not a bad thing, just unexpected. If you just want funky up-tempo and lay-you-down songs, you may be disappointed. (Although that's there too.) Once you get over the ititial surprise, I think you'll rank this right up there with his best work.
This reminds me of soundtracks to movies like Love Jones where every the album would have been great even without being attached to a great movie. The movie was one of the best movies of the year and the soundtrack is just as inspiring and uplifting.
Phil Perry has a great voice and a great way with a song, whether it's a classic or an original, Phil always sounds great. Material is solid, really comfortable, but doesn't really just reach out and grab you. If you are a Phil Perry fan, you'll love it.
I would highly recommend this album. Very modern with and old-school Memphis feel. Gospel-harmonies, exciting lyrics, great sound and feel to the album. This is an album both the young and the old-school will like.
I view Norah Jones as a true jazz singer. She would be equally at home with an orchestra behind her or in a dark, smokey club. She has a classic, classy voice that never disappoints. Strong material with a great voice and range and fantastic phrasing and captivating.
Most of this album are cover songs and they are all "fine". Not bad, but certainly nothing outstanding either. Then at the end are 3 slightly reworked versions or "covers" of her own songs. Best I can say is nice background music if you need something on while you do other things.
