affordable large area purifier

If you value clean air in your home, you should consider the Insignia HEPA air purifier. This unit can cover up to 497 sq ft and since it’s a best buy brand, it doesn’t cost as much as other filters out there that cover this amount of area. The replacement HEPA filters are $60 when not on sale (but are currently $15 off at the time of this review. The filters are rated for 2,000 hours of use which if you leave it on all day and night, you will have to replace every 84 days or so. If you want to extend that time you can use the built-in timers for up to 12 hours at a time, so depending on the air quality you can just use the timer to make the filters last longer. There is an Auto mode that will adjust the fan speed automatically depending on the particulates it captures as well. The bright LED indicator on the front is easy to read and will display the air quality in either red, orange, yellow, or green. Green meaning the air is good and red, hazardous. It will also display the size of the particulates that is captures as a micrometer number. I have had it running in my living room area which is bigger over all than the rated 497 sq ft area, but it seems to be doing a good job. It is very quiet on the first two speed settings, and I hardly notice that it is working to keep my air clean. Speed levels 3 and 4 can get loud, but it is also working a lot harder as well and unless its dealing with a huge air quality issue, you probably will not need those speeds anyway. Overall, if you are looking for a relative inexpensive way to purify a large area of your homes air, this is a very good option.

4k Resolution and great picture

If you are looking for a high quality 4k security camera system, look no further than the Swann 8-channel 4k pro enforcer system. There are many camera options offered by Swann so you can find something that fits your needs. The system I have is an 8-channel system and comes with 4 cameras, so there is room to add 4 more cameras. They have up to 16 camera systems out there, but the price is higher. I plan to add 4 more cameras at some point to cover some blind spots, but for now the 4 cameras can cover my main areas.
Set up was very simple and straight forward. The documentation included will walk you thru the set-up process if you need it. These cameras will require some installation and an Ethernet cable run for them to operate. They are PoE so power, data, video, and audio all come over one wire. This is the simplest form of wired cameras but keep that in mind that if you are not handy with drilling holes and pulling wires, you will need to hire someone to install them. I was able to run the wires in my attic and drill holes in my overhang.
The 4k quality of the video is fantastic and I am amazed by it. There are so many features that you can configure in the interface that I could hardly scratch the surface in the short time that I have had it so far. More time with it would definitely be needed to try everything out and fine tune the system. There is IR detection and different motion detection that you can play with along with scheduling. The system can send you a push notification, email, upload a picture or video to your cloud storage (dropbox). So many things. The 2TB Toshiba drive can store a total of 529 hours of video and I think that may be divided up between the total number of cameras that you have. Be prepared to spend some time playing around with the settings and fine turning it to your needs. Two-way communication on the cameras is decent, but not that loud and since mine are mounted high on a 2nd story, they are pretty much useless for that. The built-in lights are not very bright either, but your install may be better if you install on the ground floor. The siren is loud and annoying though and that may deter unwanted guests.
Over-all, this is a bit costly, but you have the option of different cameras to use and the number of cameras as well. Installation cost might be a factor, but wired cameras work a lot better when viewing remotely on an app, and never having to worry about charging batteries is a good thing. Just be sure to have your NVR plugged into a big UPS to cover you during extended power outages.

Easy cook, semi easy clean
on November 27, 2021

Cooking indoors is becoming more and more fun lately. There are a lot of different products on the market that has made things easier and better over the years. The Ninja Foodi Pro XL is one amazing 7 in 1 device. You can Bake, Roast, Air Fry, Grill & Griddle, BBQ, Broil, and Dehydrate with it. There are two attachments that help make a lot of it happen and that is the 12” flat top Griddle plate and the 4 qt Air Fry basket. I haven’t had much time to cook a lot with it, but I have used the Griddle plate to make some French toast and bacon and the grill to cook up some burgers. I plan on using the Air Fryer to make some wings tonight though and I am a bit worried that the deep channels in the fryer basked will collect oil, that seems to be an oversite on the design, so if you desire a completely oil free experience for wings, you might want to look elsewhere. The design of the Foodi Pro XL allows for open hood cooking as well as closed hood. I prefer the open hook so you can see how your food is doing and not have to guess. There has been no smoke so far from the device as I have been cooking and according to Ninja, it is due to the smoke control system in place that consists of using the temperature-controlled grill grate, splatter shield and the cool-air zone design of the unit. I am impressed with that feature since I tend to make a lot of smoke when I cook! The unit’s size is big and may take up a good portion of your counter space, but considering all that it can do, it is well worth the space it uses. Clean up of the plates is easy thanks to the non-stick coating. Be sure to not use any hard utensils on it or they can scratch, use silicone or plastic only. You should also clean the spatter shield on the top inside of the unit each time to keep it clean. My main gripe with the cleaning is the inside of the lid, there are a lot of nooks and crannies up in there and I am sure over time they will get caked on and look dirty, hopefully that will not affect the unit’s functionality.
Pros:
many functions
clean up of grates
Easy to use buttons
Cons:
inside lid clean up
air fry basket traps oil

Great quality dashcam, troublesome app
on November 16, 2021
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
I have had many dash cameras and the video quality of this one is by far my favorite. 4K video is amazing and allows me to see license plates more clearly than ever before and with a 140 degrees field of view. That being said, the Cobra SC 400D has some flaws currently and I recommend you wait to purchase to see if they can iron out the issues that the Drive Smarter app currently has. If you just want something to record video and don’t care about the “smart” features, then by all means, you can’t go wrong with this unit. It was easy to set up and install using the adhesive stickers that are already attached. They have provided a spare set incase you want to relocate the cameras. The main mount is magnetic, so you can remove the dash camera and hide it away if you want very easily. The screen is easy to see in the right light, but with some sun glare, you won’t be seeing much. It is a bit small for my liking, but it is not too bad.
In the box you are given a short USB cable, a long 12V to USB micro cable for the main camera, camera mount with GPS built into it, two sets of adhesive stickers, rear mounted camera, and a long rear mounted camera cable that is a small single post connector to USB micro. It took me a little while to figure out that the rear camera connector is located on the top of the dashcam and the side connector spot is if you wanted to add an additional in cabin camera, which would be great for those who do ride sharing. Also included is a 32GB microSD card, but you really should upgrade this if you want to record more than a few hours of video, especially at 4k resolution. The microSD slot is located on the side of the camera, and it is easy to get to. The camera lens also has a feature to reduce glare on the screen.
The camera does not have any type of battery or capacitor built in so if you have a car where the 12v power turns off when you turn the car off, then the dashcam will power off as well and not provide any of the advanced feature such as parking mode using the g-sensor or motion detection. If you want to use those you will have to purchase a hard wiring kit. They are not very expensive; just be sure you find one that is compatible with the micro-USB connector…most of them are Mini USB. It would have been nice for them to have included some sort of internal battery though.
My main gripe with this unit is the terrible Drive Smarter app. It is pretty good to make the settings changes to the dash camera and the map feature with reporting police, traffic, or cautions seems to work well, but they are reliant on a network of other users to all do the reporting…think Waze. So, I am not sure how many users there are, but over time it may grow and depending on where you live, this might be a useful feature. For me the main feature of this app is to view the video on the camera. It will use a Wi-Fi connection to the dash camera to view the list of videos. Each time you view a video, you must reconnect back to the Wi-Fi connection, and it is quite annoying. I am not sure if this is an issue with my phone (Galaxy Note10+) or I am doing something wrong here. Each connection takes about 5 to 10 seconds to reconnect and if you don’t know what you are looking for exactly, this could be time consuming. Hopefully this will get resolved on an update, but for now this is the main reason I cannot recommend this dashcam.
Pros:
Video quality
included rear camera
ability to add in dash camera
bright screen
built in GPS
micro-USB
included 32GB card
Cons:
Price
no internal battery
Drive Smarter app

Another winner from Jabra
on November 8, 2021
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Jabra Elite 7 Pro wireless headphones are Jabra’s latest offering in the wireless earbud space. I have the Jabra Elite 65t and they were my favorite to use, that is until I got these. The biggest improvement to me is the inclusion of Active Noise cancelling or ANC. For me, it works very well and when you find the right fitting gels then it’s a near perfect combo. The earbuds come with the medium gels, but I find that the small ones fit me much better and are much more comfortable. It provides the perfect amount of outside noise blocking and sound that I love. If you would like to hear the world around you, you can turn on. Changing the ear gels was a bit of a challenge as I was afraid of ripping them, but you can just flip the flap outwards and pull hard on that, and it will come off the mount. It is secure that is for sure, so you don’t have to worry about that. After the initial charge you can get up to 11 hours (w/o ANC or hear through), but most everyone will have those on so you will most likely see about 9 hours per charge and a total of about 35 with the case. I was getting close to those numbers easily with my initial testing. Charging the ear buds is as easy as opening the slim clamshell charging case, which by the way has Qi charging built in or you can use a USB Type C. If you forget to charge your ear buds, rest assured, you can get about a 1.2 hours’ worth of charge in just a quick 5 minutes in the case.
Paring with my Galaxy Note10+ was easy and I had to do that before the Jabra Sound+ app would recognize them. Once I did, the app ran thru a 15-minute firmware update and I was able to then customize the sound options for EQ stuff, sleep settings and ANC/Hear through volumes. The app is solid and works well and I can easily switch between the 65t and the 7 Pro ear buds.
Features of these ear buds include the ability to use one at a time (which can extend your battery life), buttons on each one that preform different functions. The right ear bud mainly functions to play/pause music, volume up and the right controls the ANC / Hear through / Off functions, volume down, and voice assistant. Different combinations of short presses, single or double or long presses activate the functions. You can change up the buttons to your liking using the app so if you do not like the factory set up, you can change it up. There is also a feature called Sidetone, which allows you to hear your own voice when you are on a call and it is turned on by default, if you want to adjust that or turn it off, you must use the app to do so. There is a small sensor located between the charging ports that let the ear bud know when it is in your ear or not and this will activate the auto pause feature when you remove an ear bud, it will also auto resume when you put it back in w/in 60 seconds, a nice feature, I think.
Sound wise, these preform great, I can adjust the bass to my liking and it’s a perfect sound to my ears. There isn’t a lot of bass, but its great for my taste of music and I was able to crank it all the way up w/o any type of distortion at all. Taking calls was clear and using the ANC feature on a busy street, the person on the other end was able to hear me, but they said I was a little muted. In a quite environment, they performed perfectly, and the caller had no complaints.
I have been wearing them for hours on end and they have been comfortable. I did have one issue where the right ear bud would not connect to my phone. After some troubleshooting, I finally had to reset them (hold both buttons for 10 seconds while they are in the case, wait for the purple lights to flash, then close the case lid for at least 5 seconds.) I unpaired them from my phone and ran thru the pairing process again and connection was restored. If anything, this might have just been a fluke and nothing to worry about, Jabra makes some good stuff, so I am not concerned. These do have a full 2-year warranty so that puts me at ease. My only other gripe is that they currently do not support multiple devices yet, but hopefully a firmware upgrade will resolve that. Overall, these are a bit on the pricey side, but they are well built and preform great.
Pros:
Sound
Quality
Sound+ app
functions
ANC
Hear through
Battery life
2-year warranty
Cons:
Price
Multi connections

Motorized for fine tuning

The Core Innovations antenna is a great way to cut the cord from the expensive cable / Satellite providers and provides great reception in full HD or 4K. Full HD or 4K does depend on the Television providers in your area, but with a 100-mile range, you will most likely pick up at least a full HD signal. I cut the cord a long time ago and it was one of the best things that I did. I purchased a popular brand DVR that was able to use the OTA (Over the Air) signal to record, and I was not missing out on any of my main shows. For the most part, when you want to maximize your benefits of using an OTA, you may have to adjust it to get the best reception per channel, and this might be difficult to do, but the Core Innovations HDTV antenna has a motorized feature and a remote to rotate the dish 360 degrees so you can always get the best reception w/o having to manually adjust the antenna. I am fortunate that all of my TV stations near me are on the top of one mountain and I just have to aim in their direction. I have picked up 60 total stations to my surprise. My previous HD OTA only was able to pick up 32, but that one only had a range of 60 miles. This picked up a lot more for me, granted most of those stations I will never watch, but at least its an option. Installing the antenna was easy, but if you do have a 2-story house, you will need a longer coax to make the run if the TV is on a different floor. I was able to tap into some existing coax from a previous cable TV install so that worked out for me. I must admit, I was surprised that this worked at all, my experiencing of opening the box had me worried. There was no packaging inside and the pieces were just tossed in the box with plastic covering some of them. Not a very professional presentation, but it in my case, this did not affect the working of the unit. If your local UPS isn’t as friendly with boxes, you might have a different experience. If you pick it up in the store, be sure to open and inspect it before you take it home. Other than that, my experience with this was good and I feel it is a good option for cutting the cord and picking up local stations in your area.

Motorized to adjust reception
channel reception
Range

Packaging

lightweight, long battery, great feel

The Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless gaming mouse is my new favorite gaming mouse. If you like simple designs, wireless, and light weight, then this might be the mouse for you as well. The feel in your hand is great and it is the perfect size for my hand. This is a right-handed ergonomic mouse, and the button placement is perfect for me. You can connect this mouse via USB type-C cable, Bluetooth, and wireless dongle. The dongle is a small one like what a big-name brand that starts with a “L” uses. The previous corsair dongle I had was much bigger and this was a pleasant surprise. I did not need any software to get this up and running and windows detected it and I was ready to go. I set up another PC using the Bluetooth and that whole process was simple and easy to use as well. The toggle on the bottom of the mouse is where you select between the two wireless modes, or you can turn off the mouse to save battery. The built-in battery has lasted me for days without needing a recharge and it is rated for 90 hours, and I feel that it will last that long, whereas my previous corsair gaming mouse seemed to need a charge every three days or so. Underneath the mouse is a little container for the USB dongle to keep it close and there is also a button to change the DPI settings on the fly. Gaming with this mouse, which is what it is designed for, is amazing. I am loving the feel and the placement of the buttons. It is fast and responsive and combine that with a great battery life, you have an all-around great mouse. If you download the iCUE software, you can customize the mouse RGB lighting and make profiles for different occasions utilizing the button on the bottom which I mentioned earlier. Three profiles can be stored locally on the mouse, so you don’t have to worry about not having your favorite set up when you play on another PC. You can’t go wrong with this mouse and the 2-year warranty just sweetens the deal.

Nest Cam with floodlight has built-in intelligence that can tell the difference between a person, a vehicle, and an animal. It alerts you when there’s important activity,* and lights up automatically so you can see what’s happening. With 24/7 live view and free event video history, you never miss a thing, day or night. Swap out your existing basic floodlight and use the same wires for power. Nest Cam with floodlight requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

subscription a must to be useful
on October 19, 2021

The Google Nest cam with Floodlight is a direct replacement for those old-style motion activated flood lights that a lot of us have on our homes these days. It uses the existing bracket that your previous floodlight used and just mounts on top of that. The wiring was simple enough, just three wires. Black, white, and a green ground. I went ahead and charged forward with the install and mounted the bracket and mounting plate, but I failed to install the ground wire first. Removing the plate from the bracket proved to be a tough challenge but I eventually got it separated and I wired it up correctly. The rest of the install went smoothly once I figured out that all the wires needed to be tucked inside the brackets for the floodlight to fit snugly onto its mount. I discovered that the app had some set-up instructions after you pair the camera with it so keep that in mind as well.
Installation via the Google Home app was smooth as butter. There were no hiccups, and the process was very simple and straightforward. It’s nice to have one app that can control a variety of devices and I am thankful that these nest camera’s work with an app that I already have.
The floodlights are very bright, and they can light up nearly my whole backyard, the output is a lot better than my previous floodlights provided. It took me a little while to figure out how to adjust the light brightness though, the google home app will create a separate device in the same area (backyard in my case) that just controls the light. I was in the camera settings trying to find out how to adjust the brightness since you can adjust the motion sensing, video quality, audio quality, etc there.
The camera has built in smart recognition of people, animals, cars, and this is all done by the camera, so you don’t have to have a subscription to take advantage of that. The biggest drawback of this is you must pay a subscription fee if you want to have more than 3 hours of history to look at. This is probably the biggest issue that I have with this camera and why I can’t currently recommend it as a security device. If something happens in the middle of the night, you may not see what happened since that 3-hour limit could have already lapsed. In-order to take advantage of this being useful as a security device even when you are sleeping, you must pay at least $6 or $12 month for the Nest Aware Subscription. The subscriptions have many features, and they add 30 or 60 days of history to look back on. If you spring for the $12 a month plan, you can have 10 days of constant recording saved as well, if the camera has a constant power source. I admit that is the plan to get and it also lets you have an unlimited number of devices. The more cameras you add, the greater the value. Most of the camera brands out there give you a few days to a week of free storage. Video quality is not too bad for a 1080p camera; however, night vision seems to require the floodlights to make anything out. Audio quality is no good either. The two-way communication is hard to hear the other person and I have to raise my voice, while using the app so the person can hear me if there is any type of background noise.
Over-all if you are looking for a good replacement for a tired old floodlight that has the added bonus of being able to record video, you might want to check this out, but at the price it is, you may want to look elsewhere especially if you factor in the subscription service.

Good mid-range gaming rig with some limitations

This is a well-built laptop, and it does come at a price of being heavy, but I don’t think this was designed with portability first in mind. I think Dell was going for a entry to mid-level gaming laptop that does not feel cheap and has respectable specs and still preforms. In my opinion, they hit the mark on nearly all accounts. The most glaring missed mark is the lack of dual channel RAM, and pre-installed is an 8GB DIMM with an open spot for expandability. Firing up Call of Duty Cold War reminds me of this each time and gives me a warning that the 8GB is the minimum amount that it supports. That is an easy fix for about another $50 or so, still it is a shame that 16GB wasn’t included.
Setting up was easy and the typical Windows 10 Cortana set up and I had no issues with that, attach it to my Wi-Fi6 network (802.11AX is supported) and it finished up the updates in no time.
The overall light gray and dark gray with black keys is a nice touch I think, there is a texture to the light gray plastic that has a good feel and the orange G logo on the side is a nice addition. The AMD Ryzen 5 has 6 cores and is a fine chipset and seems to handle pretty much anything that I can throw at it. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 has 4GB of DDR6 memory. I wish it had more, but these low power laptop powered graphics cards still lag their desktop brethren. The 120Hz 1920x1200 FHD screen is clean, sharp, bright, and crisp and I think this is one of the best features of this laptop. Inside you will find a small form factor 512GB m.2 drive without the option to add a second internal drive so if you plan on using this for some high end COD games, you will need an external drive since those will fill up your drive fast. There are not a lot of ports on this so if you have a lot of devices to plug in, you may need a hub of some sort. There are two USB Type A Super Speed ports, a Type C SS port on the left side, a USB Type A 2.0? on the back next to the HDMI and finally the Ethernet and Headphone jack on the right side. The 180-Watt power supply is plugged into the back as well so and I like that it is out of the way. There are two speakers placed on each side of the keyboard that face outwards. They sound decent, but I wasn’t that impressed with them. There is a large trackpad that works well, and I have no complaints about that. They backlit keyboard has good spacing and a full 10-key on the right side where you would expect it to be. Battery life has been ok so far as I have averaged about 4.5 hours on a single charge.
Overall, this is a good laptop for the money and the gaming performance is right where you would expect it to be, nothing high end, but good enough to play Cold War on Medium settings with 60 FPS and no lag. Cranked at Max and Ultra settings, it does lag, and I was only able to achieve 28 FPS.

A handy device to have for bites

The Beurer insect bite healer is a drug free topical treatment for insect bites. The manufacturer says it works best right after you are bitten, but I was not able to test that. I did however use it on a bite that I found on my leg that I didn’t notice until the next day, about 10 hours later. I was impressed on how it worked on that bite. There are two settings, 3 seconds, and 6 seconds and the 3 second mode is recommended for first use and for sensitive skin. The magic comes from a small ceramic disc that will heat up and I found it very painful at first, but once you use it a few times, you learn to expect the pain that it brings. No pain, no gain, right? There is only one button on the device and when you press it, it will determine the mode that it will go into. One press is the 3 second mode and two presses is the 6 second one. In addition, there is a ring around the button that will light up halfway for the 3 seconds and all the way for the full 6 second mode. I can see this device being a very handy tool if you go camping a lot or if you like to sit outside in your back yard. Keep it near you and if you get bitten, just use it right away and hopefully it will work great for you.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO with Heatsink for next-level computing. With a PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ interface, get up to 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe® 3.0¹ while remaining compatible with PCIe® 3.0. ¹Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe® 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.

Anyone know if the heatsink is easily removable in case I want to use it in a gaming laptop? I am not sure this will fit my laptop 2nd bay, Asus ROG m16 SSD slot. Thanks!

you need a tiny star bit to remove it, it will void the warranty if you did a security sticker is installed. IMO, just get the non-heat sink version for your laptop. I was not able to install this in my Asus G15 2021 model due to the heatsink making it too thick.

Does this have the port for the thermometer? I have the smart xl that’s been great but after a year and a half it’s time to replace since we use it at least 3 times a week minimum. But just wanted to know if I could use my old thermometer in this one?

no, it does not have a port for the thermometer that I have found.

Elite 85T or Elite 7 Pro? Calls and ANC aren't important. I just need bass heavy sound for music. So which one is bass heavy and better? Is 85T better because of big drivers?

not sure about the 85t, I had the 65t and I feel that the 7 Pro has less bass than those.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

no, they make a seal that does not let sound in. It requires using the "hear through" so you can easily carry on conversations. Your ears will be plugged.

This LG CordZero vacuum has everything you want, from Kompressor technology that lets you clean more and empty less, to two rechargeable batteries that deliver up to 120 minutes¹ of uninterrupted cleaning. But why stop there? The Power Mop attachment gives hard floors a perfect finish—without messy buckets or harmful chemicals. Simply fill the reservoir with water, snap on the attachment and go.

Hi - Can you dry mop with this? Meaning could I mop without any water? Can it just spin? Thank you!!

Yes you can, not sure if you will damage your floors though. I tried it on my tile and it was fine, but didn't seem to do much in the realm of cleaning w/o water.

How does this connect to a laptop? Does it require programming in order to project a show from a cable source on a laptop, or just an HDMI connection?

you just need an HDMI connector and it will use the laptop as the source when you select the right HDMI input, there are two to choose from.

does it have an off timer? I don't see one in the picture

Yes, the right dial works as a temp/timer and you just press it to toggle between the two modes.
