Easy and quick set up
on March 19, 2024
Posted by: jago
The Logitech Casa Pop-Up Desk Work From Home Kit is a compact and convenient solution for remote work setups. The kit includes a Logitech wireless keyboard , a trackpad, storage and laptop stand all in a nice compact carrying case that is the size of a book. Removing the stored trackpad and keyboard just takes a simple push on the bottom and the top will swivel up to pull it out. The keyboard is small and compact, but it is easy to type on. The ability to sync to up to three different devices is a big win for this set up and it is easy to switch between the three devices with the labeled keyboard buttons or the trackpad buttons. The keyboard does not have any backlight and I feel that is a big miss for this set up. The trackpad is responsive and a really nice size. It took me some time to get used to it, but the more I do, the more I like it.
The keyboard and mouse combo offer reliable wireless connectivity and should have a very long battery life. The laptop stand is sturdy and adjustable, providing ergonomic benefits by raising the laptop to eye level, reducing neck strain.
The Casa Pop-Up Desk is a portable and lightweight desk that can be easily assembled and disassembled, making it ideal for small spaces or temporary workstations. It offers a stable surface for your laptop and other essentials, enhancing productivity and comfort while working from home. Overall, the Logitech Casa Pop-Up Desk Work From Home Kit is a practical and well-designed solution for remote workers seeking convenience and functionality.

Low cost Monochrome laser printer USB only.
on January 13, 2024
Posted by: jago
The Brother HL-L2400D Black-and-White Laser Printer is a reliable and efficient monochrome printer that is well suited for the home office, personal use, or small business. One of its standout features is its 32-ppm fast-printing speed, producing sharp and clear black-and-white documents at an impressive rate. It’s low cost makes this a great option for those who just want to print in monochrome.
The printer's duplex printing capability is a welcome addition, allowing users to save on paper costs by automatically printing on both sides. The paper handling is solid, with a decent input tray capacity that reduces the need for frequent refills.
Setup is relatively straightforward, and the compact design makes it easy to fit into various office setups. The printer's durability and consistent performance make it a cost-effective choice for those primarily needing black-and-white prints without the extra frills of color printing.
While it may lack some advanced features found in higher-end models (no Wi-Fi or networking), USB is the only way to connect to the printer, the Brother HL-L2400D excels in delivering a straightforward and reliable printing experience, making it a solid choice for users seeking a no-nonsense monochrome laser printer without the need for color or networking. The consumables consist of: TN 830 Toner for 1200 pages, TN 830XL Toner for 3000 pages and DR830 Drum kit for 15000 pages. Not sure on the prices of them but from the previous generation the regular toner was around $41 and the XL $81, the drum kit replacement seems to be around $27.

Beautifully sounding & great fitment/battery life
on December 7, 2023
Posted by: jago
If you are looking for some of the best sounding earbuds on the market today, then be sure to check out the Denon PerL Pro True Wireless earbuds and take the time to fully customize them to your unique hearing profile and they will blow you away. Opening up the box you have a wide array of fitment options that not only include silicon and foam ear tips, a couple of wing attachments, a short USB A to C charging cable, the earbuds, and the charging case with Qi charging ability. Each earbud is very light, and the case is small and light as well. The earbuds fit snugly inside, and magnets help guide them to their charging locations. The case also has three lights to indicate the power status of each earbud and the case itself. I was able to test with phone calls and both ends are met with superior sound and the other person on the phone was impressed with how I sounded. Battery life has been fantastic as well, they are rated for 8 hours and 24 hours with the case providing additional juice. I found that my earbuds were very close to these numbers. During my initial testing, I did a lot of trial and error to find my perfect combo of ear tips and wing attachments, and it is nice that a good variety is included with these. These fit snug and comfortable in my ear and after you settle on the perfect fitment, they don’t feel like they are going to fall out of your ears, and I never felt fatigue with having them in my ears. Connecting to my phone was easy and I was also able to connect to my PC at the same time, so they support muti-point connections which is another big plus for these. Switching between music on my Pc and a phone call was simple and seamless.
Tap control controls are available and customizable via the Denon app. Single, double, triple and a double tap and hold for each side. You can set any of these up with how you want them such as a single tap on the right for volume up, double tap on the left for prev track, etc. When you first launch the app, it walks you through personalizing the earbuds for how your ears are and how you actually hear things. After a few minutes, it will generate a series of tones (using adaptive acoustic technology) and configure things for you. I recommend doing this a few times and create a few different profiles to try things out. It’s a neat process and it seems to really make it sound better for your ears. I have had quite a few sets of earbuds over the years and these are by far the best sounding, best fitting, and best app that I have used.

Set up can be finicky, but great otherwise
on November 26, 2023

The Arlo Essential 4 camera 2k set is a great way to provide video security in your house for not a lot of money. The 2K video is very clear and provides 130-degree Field of view and has an integrated spotlight and color night vision. The spotlight is fairly bright and seems to assist in the color night vision. Battery life in the essential cameras have been pretty good, but if you have a hard-to-reach place to install one, I would suggest either the XL model for longer life, or getting a Solar panel to charge it. Mine have been installed for about 2 weeks now and the battery is down about 20 percent. I expect to get about 3 months max out of the battery at this point. My Alro Ultra camera (which is at my front door and gets the most activity) lasts about 6 months easily. I was not happy with the mounting options that come in this box, and I had to get some articulating mounts. The ones in the box are only designed for these cameras and they only provide a level install. You cannot angle the camera at all with these mounts. Another feature that these cameras have is a siren and the ability to two-way talk to someone on the other side. The volume of each of these leaves something to be desired and they are basically useless in my opinion. Installation is where I really hate these things though. I am not sure if it really is the fault of the app or my Orbi wi-fi home mesh network. These require a 2.4GHz network and I have some dedicated for my IoT devices such as this. For some reason the Arlo cameras are not very consistent with the set up. The first camera usually works very smoothly and connects w/o any issues. The second camera I tried right after, would not connect no matter what I did. I restarted my phone, reset the Arlo App, rebooted my routers, nothing. I then took it to my office and set it up there w/o any issues. I brought the camera home again and it set up just fine on my network after that. However, once they are connected, they are very reliable and good to go. So, your results may vary since your home set up will always be different. Overall, I really like having these cameras and I do subscribe to the Arlo Secure Multi-Camera plan. This covers all the cameras that I have 11 of them overall. You do get a free 30-day trial that comes with these cameras and once I added these cameras, I automatically got a free month. This allows to have one camera set up for package detection (front door) and all of the cameras can detect Vehicle, person, or animal. I find this detection to be accurate for the most part and you are also given a 30-day cloud storage option as well. Arlo still has the free plan which includes the 7 days of storage, but no smart detection.

Really want to love this but...
on November 18, 2023
Posted by: jago
The Nextbase iQ 1K Smart Dash camera is a device I really want to love, but I cannot at this point in time. First off, it’s a very neat and modern looking dash camera and has many features that would make you jump at the chance to take advantage of them. However, the best features of the camera are not yet available and just say “coming soon” in the app. It’s very hard to recommend someone to spend this much money on a product that is not yet fully operational with the ‘hopes’ of the main features being implemented after purchase. I don’t have any doubts that at least some of the features will be rolled out, but I can’t guarantee that they will. Things I do love, are the 4G connectivity that I can view the live feed when I feel like it, pending of course the 4G connection has a signal. This will depend on where you live. I am not sure if there was a coverage map anywhere, but I think it uses AT&T’s network since my phone seems to not connect in some of the same areas. Establishing the initial connection to the camera via 4G can be slow at times as well and so fare I have only had a few times where I could not connect at all. Getting live push notifications to your phone when there is movement around your car is pretty neat as well. You can also sound a little alarm that will emit from the speaker, but it won’t scare anyone away and it is not that loud. I can barely hear it outside my 2019 Ridgeline. Video clarity on the 1080p front camera is great and I have no issues with that although the 140-degree angle is not as good as some other camera’s out there, and the interior camera works well also with good clarity. Mounting the camera was a bit of a hassle for me, there is no screen to screen to view what the camera sees as you mount the camera, so you have to use a level or eyeball it. It helps to have another person assisting you with getting it mounted straight. Also, the camera lens is not adjustable, the entire assembly will only move forward and back on the mount and there is no side or rotation adjustment available. The camera can be removed by sliding up on the mount and that will allow you to work on the camera if you need to or if you wanted to add the rear camera (not included, may not be available yet either as of the time of this review). Removing the power plug requires you to use a pry tool to pull it up, I used the included wire tucking tool and that allowed me to pry it up to remove it. Speaking of included items, Nextbase includes just about every power option that you could need. I have the OBD power plug in my truck so I used that, but you can use a fuse plug and other options for pre-1996 cars. You may not get the “always on” feature to connect to your camera (live view, notifications, etc.) if the fuse does not provide power all the time though.
The app (ver 1.5.1) needs a lot of work still. The default time on the app is set three hours ahead of me when I set it for Los Angeles time. The time on each video event is correct, so it is just the app that won’t update. Guardian mode and Roadwatch A.I. are still coming soon. I was given a trial period to test things out and I hope those features are released before my trial is up. I don’t see myself paying $20 a month for the service to take advantage of those unless they are fully functional. The $9.99 a month plan gives you many of the features except the ability to look back at live view history, won’t automate the Incident back up, emergency SOS, no extended warranty, but everything else is included. If you pay yearly, you can get a 20% discount. I also noticed that the preview pictures of the footage is a little slow to show up so you are stuck with a grayed out box where a preview of the image should be. I did have the opportunity to contact customer service for these issues, they were kind, but not very helpful and were just able to tell me that those features missing are in the works and the other issues will be worked on by the developers. I really want to like the Nestbase iQ camera and app, but at this time I cannot recommend anyone purchase this unless they are ok with missing features and bugs

Soft chewable ice nuggets, they are great!
on October 31, 2023
Posted by: jago
I recently had the chance to try out the GE Profile Opal 1.0 Nugget Icemaker with a side tank, and I must say, it’s a game-changer for ice lovers. This sleek and innovative appliance has completely redefined the way I enjoy my beverages. The soft chewable, crunchy nuggets that it creates have elevated my drinking experience at home to that of some restaurants that I have visited in the past. The Opal 1.0 boasts a modern and compact design, making it a seamless addition to any kitchen or home bar setup. Its black stainless-steel exterior gives it a polished look that matches closely my LG black stainless-steel appliances. AT 17” tall, it still manages to fit on my countertops and squeeze in under my cabinets. I don’t think I will keep this on the counter all year round, but for sure when I have a party or need more ice than my LG fridge can produce since it does take up some valuable space in my limited countertops. The user-friendly interface and intuitive controls make it very easy to use and there are only two buttons that you have to worry about. The start up process of the initial sanitization had me a little worried since it asks you to fill it up and use a teaspoon of bleach and then start a clean cycle. I was a little worried about using bleach in something that I will use for eating and/or drinking, so I ran a few extra rinsing cycles after the sanitization, and I didn’t notice any residual affects. In the manual is a list of the US and the how hard the water is in your area. I tested my water with a meter that I have, and the map was accurate for me. I decided to use distilled water in this so I won’t have to worry about build up, but depending on your location, you may have to descale this monthly or every few weeks.
What I believe sets this ice maker apart is its ability to produce nugget ice, a favorite of my kids for its soft, chewable texture. This icemaker can churn out a batch of ice in as little as 20 minutes, ensuring you’re never left waiting for your next refreshment, I found that the entire basket was filled in about 4 hours and it will auto pause if it detects ice in the way. Clear out the ice in its path and it will resume making more. In all, 3lbs of ice can be made from the 48 oz of water that it holds and the side tank you can add even more (96 oz.) water to keep the party going. The unit is very quiet and only emits a low-level hum while it is on. Once you are done, you can easily drain the unit into a sink, dry it out and store it for the next time. The basket and included scoop are easy to clean with soap and water. The outside of the unit is equally easy to clean due to its simple design.

Decent Mid-Range gaming laptop
on October 13, 2023
Posted by: jago
The Dell G15 15.6” FHD gaming laptop is heavier than I would expect and thicker than I usually like in my laptops, I think their G15 line of gaming laptops is not designed with portability in mind and combine that with the largest power brick that I have ever seen come with a laptop (nearly 3lbs) and it just feels like this is meant to stay put on a desk somewhere. The overall specs of an Intel i7 Core processor, 8GB of RAM, 1920x1080 FHD 120Hz LED display, 1TB NVMe M.2 drive, and GeForce RTX 4050 6GB GDDR6 RAM is respectable, but not the top of the line. Don’t expect to play the latest AAA shooter with Ultra graphics at 60FPS. Older titles such at TitanFall II, this can easily handle though. Still this, in my opinion, is geared more towards the casual gamer who won’t really pack it up daily in a backpack. The laptop and power brick weigh nearly 9lbs total.
Setting up was fast and easy via the typical Windows 11 set up and I had no issues with that, attach it to my Wi-Fi6 network (802.11AX is supported) and it finished up the updates in no time.
The built in 720p web camera is nice to have, but it won’t win any clarity awards, but is acceptable for Teams meetings or video chatting with friends and family.
The overall dark shadow gray with backlit dark gray/orange keys is a nice touch I think and there is a texture to the dark gray plastic that has a good feel and the orange G logo on the side is a nice addition. The 13th Generation Intel Core i7 is a fine chipset and seems to handle pretty much anything that I can throw at it. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 has 6GB of GDDR6 memory. I wish it had more, but these low power laptop powered graphics cards still lag their desktop counterparts. The 120Hz 1920x1080 FHD screen is clean, sharp, bright, and crisp and I think this is one of the best features of this laptop. Inside you will find a 1TB m.2 drive without the option to add a second internal drive so if you plan on using this for some high-end AAA games, you will need an external drive since those will fill up your drive fast. You do have the ability to add a second DDR5 RAM stick in the unit as there is a free slot. This laptop really should have come with 16 GB total, but you can easily add another 8GB for not a lot of money. There are not a lot of ports on this so if you have a lot of devices to plug in, you may need a hub of some sort.
There are two USB Type A (3.2) Super Speed ports on one side, a Type C SS (DP also) port, and a third Type A (3.2), and HDMI 2.1 on the back and finally the Ethernet and Headphone jack on the right side. The 330-Watt power supply is plugged into the back as well and I like that it is out of the way. There are two speakers placed on each side of the keyboard that face outwards. They sound decent, but I wasn’t that impressed with them. There is a small trackpad that works well, and I have no complaints about that except I wish is was a little larger. The backlit keyboard has good spacing and a full 10-key on the right side where you would expect it to be and typing on this is a very good experience for me. Battery life has been ok so far as I have averaged about 4.0 hours or so on a single charge while gaming and 6 or more hours with just normal usage.
Overall, this is a good laptop for the money and the gaming performance is right where you would expect it to be, nothing high end, but good enough to play Battlefield 2042 on medium settings with 60 FPS and no lag. Cranked at Max and Ultra settings, it does lag, and I was only able to achieve 22 FPS.

Great low price gaming monitor
on September 30, 2023
Posted by: jago
I am coming from a 25” gaming monitor and I have to say the size difference between that and this 31.5” ASUS TUF FreeSync Gaming monitor is substantial. At first, I didn’t think it would be that much of a difference, but then the box showed up at my door and I was floored. This thing is about the biggest monitor that I can fit comfortably on my desk, and it looks perfect! I am very impressed with the over all design, color, brightness, and although it has a slower refresh rate (170 Hz compared to my 244 Hz), it still does very well. The 1 ms response time is another great feature of this monitor and 2560 x 1440 resolution is a step up from my 1080p monitor from before. This is not a 4K monitor, but I really don’t have a video card that can play games that well in 4K, so I am not worried about that. The monitor has a very reasonable price, and they did not include a couple of features that I like to have on my monitors. First, the base that is included doesn’t allow for vertical movement, only allows you to angle the monitor. My next complaint is the lace of USB ports on the monitor. They did include some speakers built into the screen, but they are pretty much worthless. The volume is so low on them, you cannot hear them unless you are in a quite room and even then, it is hard to hear. I really wish they could have left out the speakers and given us the USB ports and adjustable mount. You can mount this monitor on a wall if you want using a VESA compatible stand.
ASUS really went out of their way when they created the software and adjustment for this monitor. First off, the buttons are big and easy to use along with a joystick style button on the back. There are so many options and preset viewing profiles (nigh vision mode!) that you will have to play around with them to see what you like. Combine all that with the 3-year warranty and it just makes this monitor a great deal with only a couple of draw backs (lack of USB).

Very light, very good
on September 26, 2023
Posted by: jago
The RIG 900 Pro HX headphones are probably the most comfortable, lightweight, and feature rich headphones that I have every used. I am not sure how they made these so light and strong at the same time. The lightweight headband can be bent and twisted and goes right back to its original shape. Overall build quality seems top notch on these and the ear cups fit perfectly, and the leatherette material feels soft and supple. I have no issues with my glasses either and adjusting the ear cups is simple with a nice locking system. The headset weighs an incredibly low 300 grams.
Battery life has been great as well, they are rated at 50 hours and so far I have no reason to not believe that they will get that with no issues. After about 10 hours of use over a few days, the battery is only down about 15% on my unit.
So far, my experience with these is coming from a PC perspective and I have not tried on the Xbox, PS4 nor my Nintendo Switch yet. Sound has been great all around out of the box, but the RIG 900 MAX Navigator app is where you can customize the EQ settings, power off timeout, create profiles, set up the game to chat volume and much more. There is not a way to turn on (that I have figured out) the game to chat w/o using the app so when I first tried this out, I was disappointed until I read the directions and discovered the app. The bass on these things is very punchy and can get pretty loud. Gaming its perfect and when connected to my phone for music, it sounds great as well. One thing this doesn’t do is support multiple BT connections, but there is a dual mode that allows it to be connected to BT and also USB, but you will not get sound at the same time, it will just switch…so say you are playing a game and you get a call on your phone, it will switch to your phone until you are done, then it will switch back. The microphone is pretty huge, and I do wish it was a little smaller or at least bendable, but the flip to mute feature works well and I really like that as an easy way to mute. I did have to turn up the gain on the mic in the app and that helped with the volume during calls and chatting online in games.
The piano black base is one of my favorite features of this headset. It provides an easy way to just drop it in and charge it up. The rather large USB type A dongle can be plugged into the base so you can be connected and charge with the same port, however, you do have the option to put the base on a shelf, if you wanted to display it somewhere else so it is nice to have that option as well. Both the headset and the headphones have USB type C connectors as well.
There is also a Dolby Atmos app that you can download, and it will create a scan of your head and somehow create a personalized profile for the shape of your head and ears. You do have to create a Dolby ID online to take advantage of this and it appears that when you get these headphones, the account is paid for and not just a trial. I have yet to fully play around with that, but it was fun to set up the ID in the app.

The SimpliSafe security system is a very easy to set up system that nearly took me longer to unpack than it did to install. Well, to be fair, this system I have included about 17 different devices, and it was all very neatly packed into a bigger box. I was impressed with the packing and presentation of the devices overall. This is my second SimpliSafe system and I installed this one at my in-law’s house, since they had an old wired system that required a huge monthly fee AND a physical phone to be able to call for services if they needed it. I won’t mention the three-letter name of that company, but now they are saving nearly $60 a month with the SimpliSafe $17.99 subscription when you factor in that they can get rid of the phone line since SimpliSafe has a built in 4G cellular connection for back up. I really like that feature since you don’t have to worry about thieves cutting your phone line and rendering your system useless. Each device comes neatly packaged in with some mounting hardware or 3m sticky tape. I found that the tape holds really well, if you clean the surface beforehand, however, if you are concerned with something not staying, you can use the small mounting screws in each package for that device. Inside the box is 8 door/window sensors, 2 motion detectors, glass breakage sensor, a control keypad, a key fob remote for easy arming/disarming, indoor camera, outdoor camera, main base station, and a panic button. Plus, you also get a 3-foot yard sign and various window stickers. Now they recently changed their logo to an orange, black and white one, but they also included some stickers with the older blue and black logo as well. As I mentioned before the set up was simple and the SimpliSafe app works well. My first system I got, many years ago, you could not arm and disarm using the app unless you paid for it, but since then they added that feature in with the lower tier subscription which I have been very grateful for. Now you can arm and disarm from away from your home, so you won’t have to drive back if you forget. My only complaint of the system is when it comes to the camera’s. First you must pay for the higher subscription to use them to their full potential. You can use them with the basic subscription, but you can’t see past alerts and you can basically get notified of activity and then look at the live view. The video is pretty good, and the indoor camera has a physical shutter that makes noise when it is activated. Audio is good as well, but if you are trying to use the two-way voice, its simply garbage. The sound is very low on the indoor camera, and you must yell for the person to even hear you, but its garbled anyway so you really can’t make out what someone is saying. The outdoor camera is slightly better, but overall, the two-way communication is worthless. Hopefully a firmware down the road will help with this. Expanding your system with additional sensors is a breeze and there are a lot more out there that you can add. I have added the water sensors personally, but there are also Carbon Monoxide sensors, temperature sensors, smoke detectors, and many others. Adding them is not only easy as well, but each sensor is reasonably priced too. Having the option for a 3-year warranty and no contract wraps up the deal and really makes this an attractive option for those who are looking to protect their home or homes.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO with Heatsink for next-level computing. With a PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ interface, get up to 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe® 3.0¹ while remaining compatible with PCIe® 3.0. ¹Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe® 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.

Anyone know if the heatsink is easily removable in case I want to use it in a gaming laptop? I am not sure this will fit my laptop 2nd bay, Asus ROG m16 SSD slot. Thanks!

you need a tiny star bit to remove it, it will void the warranty if you did a security sticker is installed. IMO, just get the non-heat sink version for your laptop. I was not able to install this in my Asus G15 2021 model due to the heatsink making it too thick.

Does this have the port for the thermometer? I have the smart xl that’s been great but after a year and a half it’s time to replace since we use it at least 3 times a week minimum. But just wanted to know if I could use my old thermometer in this one?

no, it does not have a port for the thermometer that I have found.

Elite 85T or Elite 7 Pro? Calls and ANC aren't important. I just need bass heavy sound for music. So which one is bass heavy and better? Is 85T better because of big drivers?

not sure about the 85t, I had the 65t and I feel that the 7 Pro has less bass than those.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

no, they make a seal that does not let sound in. It requires using the "hear through" so you can easily carry on conversations. Your ears will be plugged.

This LG CordZero vacuum has everything you want, from Kompressor technology that lets you clean more and empty less, to two rechargeable batteries that deliver up to 120 minutes¹ of uninterrupted cleaning. But why stop there? The Power Mop attachment gives hard floors a perfect finish—without messy buckets or harmful chemicals. Simply fill the reservoir with water, snap on the attachment and go.

Hi - Can you dry mop with this? Meaning could I mop without any water? Can it just spin? Thank you!!

Yes you can, not sure if you will damage your floors though. I tried it on my tile and it was fine, but didn't seem to do much in the realm of cleaning w/o water.

How does this connect to a laptop? Does it require programming in order to project a show from a cable source on a laptop, or just an HDMI connection?

you just need an HDMI connector and it will use the laptop as the source when you select the right HDMI input, there are two to choose from.

does it have an off timer? I don't see one in the picture

Yes, the right dial works as a temp/timer and you just press it to toggle between the two modes.
