Nice "home theater" substitute
on May 30, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
These headphones are a nice substitute for the "home theater." I am an old school audio guy...with old equipment. I like to run my stereo and high-end speakers when watching a movie, but don't like the thought of dropping a couple thousand to replace my receiver and add center, rear, and subwoofer speakers. So...I grabbed the Sony L600 Wireless Digital Surround Headphones!
First thing I noticed when I put them on was how much "stuff" I had been missing when watching shows. (Mr. Robot was my test show.) Not only do these headphones give you a good "surround" feel, they really enhance the background effects. And if you find the "enhancements" to be a bit much, you can select different listening modes via the headset itself: cinema, sports, game, voice, and "nothing."
The base (which functions as the charger and nearly 100' wireless transmitter) requires power (and is ***not*** a usb power source; it has a proprietary power adapter) and has audio inputs for an analog stereo mini plug, HDMI and optical audio. HDMI supports ARC. There are no audio OUTs on this device.
The headphones stay charged for a reported 17 hrs. I can't vouch for that as I always put them back on the charging stand when done.
The headphones themselves are very lightweight and comfortable and block ambient noise well. (These are not noise canceling headphones.) I am not overly excited about the controls on the headset. The buttons are simple and easy to locate, but I have confused POWER with SOUND FIELD (both are same size but on opposite ends of the right ear muff) and wish that the volume was actually a touch sensor like you see in high-end over-the-ear headphones. I also wish these headphones could connect with other Bluetooth devices. For the money, it would be nice to be able to unpair from the L600 base and use these headphones with other devices like a phone or laptop. As a result, I took away a star simply because the only thing I can do is use these headphones with a "home TV" setup given I need to feed an output from a TV, blueray, CD player, receiver, etc. to the base station.
As for the quality and comfort, though, these "theater"-style headphones are pretty awesome and are a great way to listen to your shows and movies without breaking the bank on a fancy, multiple component receiver/speakers Dolby audio system.

Good fit, decent noise canceling
on May 30, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ

The key to good noise canceling in an in-ear bud is to get the "in-ear" part to stay, well...in your ear. I found that these Sony SP600N buds stay in better than most in-ear buds I have owned in the past. Plus, the cord is relatively lightweight (compared to other bluetooth in-ears) which goes a long way to preventing tugging when moving your head.
There are multiple in-ear tips to choose from. I have found the medium in one ear and one step smaller for the other ear works best for me. They stay in quite nicely and noise cancel well in dry conditions.
The earbuds still stay in when sweating but the slightest break in the "seal" between your ear and the bud kind of cancels out the noise canceling feature. Wear these around the office or on a train or in the house and you will be happy with the noise canceling. Wear them at the gym and you might not get the same effect if your ears sweat.
Battery life is good, volume is good, and audio quality is great. Very pleased with the overall audio balance and depth once the EQ is tweaked. Use the app to see remaining battery life, set the EQ, control the music player, or adjust the noise canceling settings. (The app is not required to use the headphones--and there is a QR code to help you locate the app.) The phone quality is very good and people said I sounded just fine when talking. I did struggle getting used to the feel of the controls on the earbuds--occasionally skipping or pausing instead of voluming.
All-in-all, these are some pretty good in-ear buds with good noise canceling features if you can keep a good "in-ear seal."

It Shaves.
on April 16, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
It has been 20+ yrs since I last used an electric shaver (single edge Braun). I used to love the convenience but hated the burn along the neck--especially if my neck was still moist. Humidity used to make it impossible to use an electric daily for me. My neck would turn ground beef and burn for days.
Fast forward 20 yrs and I was very skeptical of giving an electric razor another try--especially now that I am bald and shave my head and face in the shower. Fortunately, all indications are I have found an electric razor that will meet my "enhanced" needs.
I decided to go with a 3-circle flex head model primary because of my desire to see if I could use an electric on my dome. I figured it would contour to my head fairly well and I was right. So far minimal head irritation. Plus the shaver is easy to blindly maneuver around my head, ears, and neck. I normally "blade shave" my head twice a week and was was skeptical that the electric would handle 3-4 day stubble but it seems to get the job done. Occasionally there is a stray spot to contend with but I had that problem with a blade too if I wasn't paying attention.
Face shaving is a daily chore. I like that I can use this shaver dry or wet. Dry shaves are fine as long as my skin is dry. I have had some dry shave issues getting areas around the neck/Adam's apple. I was initially a bit too aggressive and paid the price. "Wet" shaving (with a thin coat of gel) made working the sensitive areas a bit easier with less irritation. Wet or dry, cleanup is a breeze since you can pop the top and run it under water.
I have not used the "stubble" accessory and the trimmer seems a bit under-powered. As for overall power, the shaver holds its juice well and gives me a satisfaction equal to that of listening to a bug zapper on a summer's night as the magical spinning circles of doom wack down my morning stubble. I easily get a week's worth of head/face shaving out of one full charge. I don't know how long I can go because I have never pushed the battery beyond the 1 week limit. Philips claims 50 minutes / 17 shaves. I won't get the same 17 shaves result because of my head shaving, but I have no reason to believe the razor won't perform to those standards.
As for the accessories, there are only two (unless I missed something in the packaging): 3-day stubble accessory and the blade protector. I am confident I am going to lose both. I am surprised (and maybe even a bit disappointed) that the razor does not come with a simple drawstring bag and/or a charging cradle.
An electric never gives you the closeness of a blade--or even better, of your barber's blade--especially in difficult regions like the neck. Nonetheless, my face (and dome) is clean shaven enough for a full day at the office. If you are looking for an easy, better than average shave with the luxury of the wet/dry option, this razor will likely do the trick for you.

Solid signal quality
on April 11, 2018

Our local over-the-air antennas are located approximately 12-15 miles from my home over fairly flat terrain. The Mohu indoor powered antenna improved the quality and choices for over-the-air but, to be honest, I didn't care about the additional channels it found (i.e. MyTV, CW, etc.). The goal was a stronger antenna for local stations whenever cable or internet is out.
When it comes to signal strength and quality, I actually enjoy watching NBC via antenna over cable because the picture is better. Pixelization (freezing boxes on the screen) is minimal for the major networks.
The antenna is "stylish" from the standpoint that it isn't rabbit ears. It from the user standpoint, it is all plastic. It comes with a SINGLE leg to prop it on a flat surface as well as a set of screws and simple wall mount kit if you want to "mount it like a soundbar" (as the manufacturer suggests). [I will likely mount mine, but won't be proudly displaying it was they do in their pictures. For now, it is on a stand as is my tv.]
The kit comes with a couple piece of coax cable, a right-angle connector and a threaded connector to join two pieces of coax. There is more than enough cable provided unless you plan on mounting the antenna 15'+ away from the TV input. Additionally there is a power source with a detachable USB-to-wall adapter. This is nice as I choose to power my antenna via my TV's USB port rather than an outlet.
Overall this is a stylish, simple antenna that works well for me, giving a crisp, seldom disrupted picture for the major "over-the-air" networks.

Impressive volume and depth
on March 15, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
This is a truly impressive speaker when it comes to overall power. I was shocked at how far I could push the volume.
As for the sound quality, there are two things to note:
1. The pre-set EQ options leave music feeling a bit lifeless (lacking detail). I tried to let the app "auto-adjust" for my listening pleasure but I found manually setting the EQ faders was more effective.
2. Don't set the speaker on a soft surface. I first set it on a carpeted floor, then had it in my lap while tweaking sound settings. The directional speakers benefit most from a hard surface (or no surface if you are holding the speaker) to bounce sound off of. It might not be the best speaker to use at the beach or a picnic.
The bells and whistles are cool. The lights are fun...yet no illumination of the control buttons. If you don't like the "disco party" you can turn the lights off with the app.
The "tap" to play percussion instruments is also neat but kind of pointless.
Unfortunately there is no clip or strap with this speaker. The battery life is very good for a device that is essentially just a little smaller than a Pringles can. Sony claims you can "Party Chain" wirelessly but I don't own any additional Sony BT speakers. However, I could see myself wanting to buy a second one and use two out on the deck or around the pool. This is definitely one of the better small speakers on the market.

Excellent sound quality, lacking some features
on March 5, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
Very satisfied with my Sennheiser HD1 headphones. Was not overly nutty about the retro look of these cans but the design is very comfortable and adjustable. I don't "ear sweat" as much with these either compared to some other similar headphones I have owned.
The HD1 sound quality is very good. I mostly listen to modern modern alternative, old skool hip hop/rap, grunge, rock and metal streamed from online services such as Google Music. Those genres sound great and are very well balanced with no tweaking. The phone app has a nice EQ feature which helped me boost the sound a bit. I never got quite the "thump" you get from other headphones with "bass boost" features but at the same time, I am beyond that phase in life. The well-balanced bass is just as tight as the mids and highs and does not distort.
The noise canceling is average with no noticeable muddying of audio quality. I wear my headphones primarily in the office and effectively lock out everyone around me. (They all think I am concentrating super hard on my work!)
I was able to pair my headphones to both my laptop and Moto X4 via bluetooth but was never successful pairing via NFC. I took a few phone calls and while I heard everyone quite well I apparently sounded like I was in a tunnel talking through a tin can.
I took away a star for the one earmuff controls. You can do all the pause, skip, answer, transfer, etc. other high-end cans do but I am never going to remember that "push push push hold" rewinds a song. The "one button does it all" feature means you have to memorize a lot of commands to control music and calls. Volume, pause, answer and hang up are easy to figure out--the rest take some learning.
There are equal and better noise canceling muffs on the market but none that were quite as well balanced straight out of the box with 22 hours of battery life. These are definitely 4.5 star headphones if audio is your only concern, especially if you can set the EQ for one specific genre and never have to tweek settings again. The only way you won't like these cans is if you are going to rely on them for phone conversations or if you jump across musical genres and feel the need to constantly tweak settings through Sennheiser's slightly clunky EQ app.

Average Sound Quality, Cool Features
on February 27, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
I am split between two universes: Google and Amazon. I am struggling to figure out which one is best and deserves to be my personal assistant, but the "Insignia™ - Voice™ Smart Bluetooth Speaker and Alarm Clock with the Google Assistant built in" (you'd think they could come up with a more friendly, catchy name) is pushing me in the Google direction.
The device itself is average. As others have mentioned, you can't make calls on it yet. It also isn't the most robust sounding speaker on the market. Nor does it come with a battery of any kind which is odd because whose to say you might not want to take it to the backyard, or into the basement or garage for awhile as an internet music player? I cannot speak to any of the technical glitches others have had. I have not experienced any problems.
The midrange sounds are clear and the volume levels are good across the range from quiet to loud. I personally think it launches at just the right level of volume.
The assistant voice is clear. The assistant's microphone is pretty good. So far it has successfully picked up my voice without issue. Currently I have this model in the office about 5 feet away and it picks up my commands without me feeling like I am shouting.
The dimmable screen is a plus as well as the mute microphone and USB charging port on the back. Not sure how to make the temperature stay on the screen all the time. I got this unit initially as a radio alarm clock replacement and at night phone charger. It met those needs just fine, until I realized I didn't know the proper command(s) to make it wake me to music nor would it wake me if the power went out. That short-coming resulted in moving it from the bedroom to the office.
The Google Assistant features seem more intuitive to me than say, Alexa, but I've also lived in the Google world for a lot longer. It is nice to say "Hey Google, tell me about my day" and have it run through my calendar, give me traffic info, tell me about the weather and then start playing the news for me first thing in the morning. When I want a little background music: "Hey Google, stream some Q101" or "Hey Google, shuffle my Pearl Jam mix." Google just seems to get me better than the other assistants and the commands feel very natural but it does take time to learn all the different commands. There is no way to cover all the commands and interconnectivity of the Google Home enabled devices like this one, but so far it has been a joy to incorporate this little device into my daily lifestyle--and to explore how Google Assistant can *improve* my life.
Don't buy this device thinking you are getting an awesome speaker. Buy this device because you want you want an inexpensive, Google personal assistant device that has average sound, decent volume and fun features (minus phone calls...for now). Good choice for a beginner who already has a history via their Google account...and it won't break the bank. My lack of stars are primarily due to the average audio quality, the lack of a battery, and the inability (currently) to place/answer a call.

Sluggish And Pixelated
on February 21, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
For all of its claims, this television under-performs with a cable box and live action tv (sports).
PROS:
- Darks are dark, light colors are bright and bold
- Volume gets loud
- Setup was simple
- Price
CONS:
- Overcompensated color/contrast/sharpness out of the box
- Poor refresh rate, pixelation of fast action/sports
- Sluggish response when navigating channel guide via cable box compared to old television set
- Lots of apps (including Chinese apps?) we won't use and can't remove
My biggest issue is with action and the refresh rate especially through an HD cable TV box. When watching an extremely slow drama (via Xfinity X1 cable TV for example) the picture quality is fine. Add motion, especially with live sports, and you can really see a struggle to refresh the screen. Our first viewing experience was Olympic speed skating and right off the bat both my wife and I commented on how pixelated (blurry) and choppy the picture was. Graphics stayed crisp, but the action on the television was downright frustrating to watch. Watching a basketball game was brutal. [We also noticed lag compared to our old 1080 HD tv when pulling up and navigating the Xfinity television guide.]
We did watch some streaming Amazon content using the built-in Amazon app. Upon launching our streaming content, we noticed it seemed to take a bit longer for the feed to "get crisp" but that could be due to Internet issues and not the television--there really is no way to know, but our Internet is usually very solid. We also watched a documentary on DVD which seemed OK but again did not have much action in it.
The default settings seem to overcompensate contrast and sharpness. The white snow against the dark mountains was actually too bright and the faces of athletes and interviewers were too sharp. I tried using presets (like movie mode, nighttime, sports, game, etc.) to take some of the harshness out but disliked the yellow or blue tint that these presets seemed to add to the whites. I tried to correct some of the image quality and clarity using the sharpness control but struggled to find a balance point we liked--or that reduced the pixelation effect for fast action sports.
In the end, I could not get a CONSISTENT, high quality picture out of this set while watching TV through various methods (HD cable box, streaming, casting, or DVD/Bluray). Streaming via Netflix and Amazon or watching a DVD led to better picture quality (not "amazing" but definitely better than watching cable TV) however I still watch >50% of my television via cable and lots of sports. This television set will not work for me at this point in time. Internet forums suggest that the motion/refresh problem could be the TV --or-- it could be the cable provider overcompressing the HD feed. Either way, I was happier with my old standard HD picture through ALL methods of content delivery than I am with this 4K unit.

Reputable name, quirky install
on February 14, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
If you are shopping for "antivirus" (an all encompassing term these days to mean "keep me safe online") AVG is a reputable brand offering better benchmarks than some of the more popular names in anti-virus and web protection.
However, I did find their install process a bit quirky. I was a new-to-AVG user (although I had used their product back in the 90s) and consequently had to sign up for an AVG account with my email as my username. Personally I am not a big fan of having to sign-up to download a product I have a license key for. Once I had my account established (and verified via the email message that landed in my PROMOTIONS tab rather than my INBOX) I found it frustrating that I had to sign-in to the installed app on my PC and my Android device to launch it. The actual install on my Windows 10 PC seemed to to take a bit longer than most apps, appearing to freeze at times but eventually completing. The install to my Android was a link via AVG to the Play app to a push install. Once installed on Android, you had to sign on to the app with your AVG account to activate the software.
Once everything is installed and activated the product requires no interaction on your part unless there is a problem. I am VERY CAUTIOUS with my devices and truthfully would not normally buy an antivirus/web protection suite and instead rely on built-in antivirus/malware protection and run free tools as needed, however, I worry that my Android phone may expose me to more security threats than my PC simply because I interact with my phone differently. I picked the 3-device AVG license because I wanted Android protection first. I am using the other two license for the kids' laptop and an in-law.
The web logon for AVG doesn't offer much other than links to download the product, order history, and renewal info. I had hoped that I would see my 3 devices on that page plus "status reporting." It would be helpful to know via an AVG portal if the kids' laptop was routinely blocking malware, for example. The app interface on the phone is very basic and, even with a paid version, appears to be suggesting other AVG products I should buy like AVG VPN and Alarm Clock Extreme which I find frustrating. The AVG dashboard on the PC is simple and makes you feel safe but at the same time, it doesn't give a ton of useful information without drilling into each tool.
Antivirus and Internet Security software cannot keep you 100% safe because it cannot prevent you from clicking something you shouldn't, but AVG has a proven track record and the Internet Suite is worth the investment for 3 devices if you feel you need that always-checking security. Keep in mind that this is annual subscription software and a year later you will be faced with a decision regarding whether or not to renew.

A must have for all your computers
on January 13, 2018
Posted by: BenisJ
from South Bend, IN
I've been in the IT business for 20+ years and I remember when I first came across Malwarebytes. For nearly 10 years I have been telling coworkers, friends, and family "Get Malwarebytes and use it to scan your computer. It is probably more valuable than antivirus." [Note: I still tell friends to run an antivirus app but malware is more prevalent than viruses, hence the emphasis on getting an Internet security suite with a good malware scanner. Plus, Malwarebytes does not conflict with traditional antivirus apps or scans.]
Malwarebytes is minimally invasive. It won't slow your PC or inundate you with popup messages unlike some other products. The premium version is always running, always scanning. If it finds something, it takes action quickly. To this day I have never been negatively impacted by anything it has tagged and removed as malicious. It is effective, no-skills-required protection against the most popular exploits on the web. The price for the 3-pack is a great deal for the family. With a strong 10-year history and thousands of IT guys like me singing the praises of Malwarebytes, the premium product is well worth the small investment to help keep your computers safe.

Is it waterproof?

"Water resistant." Rain/Snow is not a problem, however, this would not be a suitable doorbell if you live in a pineapple under the sea.

How long will it last on battery power alone?

Impossible to determine because of the features you set on the phone that control how often the camera/sensors are active, how many times the doorbell is triggered in a month, and temperature. The general consensus is about 2.5 to 3 months. However, once mounted, the "quick release" tool makes it easy to disconnect and charge the doorbell...and charging was fairly fast using my phone's charger.

I noticed that there is a ring around the face of the Smartwatch and I was wondering if this rotates to select options? I ask because it seems to be welded in the pictures.

it does not rotate.

Step up from built-in laptop optics with a webcam that delivers crisp, smooth and colorful widescreen HD 720p video with a 60° diagonal field of view, fixed focus and auto light correction that adjusts to the illumination of any meeting space. The single, omnidirectional mic features noise-reduction technology and is engineered to support clear, natural conversation up to 3 meters away, even in busy environments like open workspaces and classrooms. Plus, the extra-long USB-A cable and universal clip let you position the webcam on your computer or mount up to 7 ft away.

Does this webcam fit curved monitors? Currently the curved monitor i have bought did not include a webcam. Are there any other webcams you'd suggest?

The "foldable hook" style of mount (I don't know how else to describe it so you might want to look at photos) seems wide enough to account for curved monitors yet still get enough grip that it won't fall off.

what is the difference of an HD webcam that is 1080p and the C505 at 720p. what is the main difference between the C505 HD & the C270 HD

720p is technically "lesser resolution" but it is still a high definition (HD) class of camera. 1080 offers better resolution if all other factors are equal (i.e. lens quality, lighting, recipient screen, streaming quality...and an app that can support 1080). My experience is that when in a standard video call, lighting/focus/microphone are more important than 720 v. 1080.

I have not compared the C505 and the C270 directly, however, the key feature with the C505 is the "long range omni-directional microphone." I can attest to clarity when more than 1-3 feet from the camera. I tend to pace in my office when on a video call. The microphone picked me up very well no matter were I stood--even if I was behind the webcam. You also get 2 extra feet of USB cable with the c505.

Two-way audio lets you hear and speak to unwanted guests (and welcomed ones too) - even when you're not home. Have the SimpliSafe App? The Video Doorbell Pro will send instant alerts whenever someone approaches. And with Smart Person Detection, it can tell the difference between people, vehicles and animals. That means you only get the alerts that matter. Plus, when backed by 24/7 professional monitoring, you’ll have experts who are ready to request emergency dispatch when you need it most. This camera is designed for all weather extremes—so you're still protected in rain and snow. (Compatible with the SimpliSafe Gen 3 security system. Requires Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and existing wired doorbell setup with mechanical chime and a transformer with 8-24 VAC, 30VA max. Not compatible with digital chimes.)

Does this doorbell allow storage to the local network instead of a cloud server?

No. Or if it does, I have not discovered how to do it. And you pay $5/mo for their cloud storage.
