Ghostbusters meets Aliens in Evolution, a sci-fi comedy about ever-evolving extraterrestrials trying to take over planet earth. Dreamworks has done a great job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The detail in the image is crisp, the colors bright, and the black levels very well-rendered and even. No digital artifacting, edge enhancement, or excessive imperfections are spotted anywhere on this transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English, French, and Spanish, as well as DTS Surround and Dolby 2.0 Surround. Both the DTS and Dolby 5.1 soundtracks are very good, utilizing the surround feature to its fullest extent. Creatures and slime swoop and ooze around the viewer as if they are right in their living room. With all aspects of the dialogue, music, and effects sounding clear and distortion free, this is an excellent soundtrack for home theater systems. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Evolution features a very nice section of supplemental materials, starting off with a commentary track by director Ivan Reitman and actors Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, and David Duchovny. This is a fast and funny track that includes lots of production stories as well as goofy quips and jokes from the actors. "The Evolution of Evolution" is a 15-minute featurette that takes a look at the making of the film and includes interviews with much of the cast and crew. Sadly, this featurette is interesting though all-too-brief. Six deleted scenes and an alternate ending are included in anamorphic widescreen which are very funny, though it's obvious why they were cut from the final film. Finally, there are some storyboard comparisons, a small photo gallery, a few production notes, and some biographies on the principal cast and crew members from the film. This is a great edition of Evolution, and a perfect addition to any science fiction-comedy collector's DVD shelf.

Funny Movie!

Okay, so this movie isn't very deep, but if you're looking for some mindless fun this could be the movie for you. Orlando Jones is funny in any movie. There's also a priceless shot of David Duchovny's rear end when he moons another character.

I Love This CD!

I bought this CD after hearing it played in the movie theater before the start of the X-Files movie. If you're an X-Files fan you MUST own this CD! However, you don't have to be a fan of the series to enjoy this music. Even after 9 years these songs manage to pass the test of time. I especially love the Foo Fighters track.

True crime strikes too close to home as a couple researching a book about serial killers gets more than they bargained for in MGM Home Entertainment's release of this chilling and suspenseful psychological thriller. Viewable in both standard 1.33:1 full-screen and 1.85:1 widescreen with the choice of either closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Surround or French Dolby Digital Surround with optional Spanish subtitles, the disc also contains some exciting extra features. Presented in both the original unrated director's cut and the R-rated theatrical release versions, the disc also features a behind-the-scenes featurette, a collectible booklet, and a theatrical trailer.

Good Movie!

If you're in the mood for a creepy serial killer movie this is the DVD for you. This movie features Brad Pitt like you've never seen him before as a sloppy looking killer. Don't expect the gorgeous Brad you're used to, but David Duchovny looks pretty hot in this movie.

Brian Gibson's biopic of Tina Turner, What's Love Got to Do with It?, comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. An English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. Supplemental materials include a theatrical trailer. The film looks and sounds superb on this disc, but the best aspects of it are the commanding performances by Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. They both earned Oscar nominations, and the small screen does nothing to diminish their amazing work.

This is a powerful story with an Oscar worthy performance by Angela Bassett, and the music is pretty good too. I've watched this movie so many times I've lost count.

George Tillman Jr.'s military drama Men of Honor comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include: a commentary track recorded by the director, lead actor Cuba Gooding Jr., and producer Robert Teitel; a pair of featurettes; deleted scenes; storyboards; an alternate ending; theatrical trailers; and television commercials. This is a decent disc, but a different edition with the same extras but a widescreen transfer is available. That disc is preferable to this one.

I Love This Movie!

This movie is written and directed beautifully by David Duchovny. Duchovny plays a man looking back on his adolescent friendships with a mentally challenged man and an incarcerated woman. As an adult he must come to terms with a tragic event from his youth. This is a heartwarming film, and I enjoyed it very much.

The cross-dressing comedy Connie and Carla comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, while a French soundtrack has also been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by director Michael Lembeck and star/screenwriter Nia Vardalos. Their conversation is exceedingly light and trivial, although those who are charmed by Vardalos will easily find it as amusing as they will find the film. Extended versions of the movie's production numbers, outtakes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and a short documentary on Debbie Reynolds round out the extras on this disc.

Connie and Carla is a cute, fun movie. You don't have to like musicals to enjoy this film. It also doesn't hurt that David Duchovny is in it. Don't worry, he doesn't sing. If you're in the mood for a romantic comedy this is the DVD for you.

An audacious film about faith, The Rapture is a contemporary fantasy that keeps its feet unnervingly planted in reality even as reality starts to collapse. Mimi Rogers, in a strikingly accomplished performance, stars as Sharon, a telephone operator who spends her off-hours engaging in casual group sex to blot out her boredom. By chance, she becomes aware of a small Christian sect whose members believe that they have found a child with the gift of prophecy who has seen the upcoming end times. Slowly but steadily, Sharon finds herself drawn to this group, and one night she abruptly turns a corner, renounces her old life, and embraces fundamentalism with passion. She marries one of her former lovers, Randy (David Duchovny), who takes up Sharon's evangelical fervor to atone for his past as a hired killer, and they have a daughter. All seems peaceful until Randy is unexpectedly murdered, and Sharon takes her child to the desert to await the rapture that will bring the chosen to heaven. The film neither supports nor scoffs at Sharon's views, and the superb performances add immeasurably to a film that presents the unbelievable (and unthinkable) at face value, making it seem oddly plausible in the process. Michael Tolkin has also written and/or directed such films as The Player (1992), directed by Robert Altman, and The New Age (1994), both of which also skewer contemporary American society as shallow, materialistic, and desperate for something authentic to believe in.

Good Drama

If you're in the mood for a thought provoking drama about religion this is the film for you. This DVD features a very early performance by David Duchovny, and his DVD commentary is quite entertaining. According to the commentary, this movie also made Siskel & Ebert's best of the year list when it was released in theaters.

I enjoyed this movie. David Duchovny's performance is superb. I remember reading a review where one critic pondered why Duchovny is not a bigger movie star, and I totally agree. He is very funny in this film. There are also some hilarious deleted scenes on this DVD.

Terence Davis's adaptation of Henry James's The Golden Bowl comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director, deleted scenes with optional commentary, trailers, production notes, and filmographies. This is a high-quality disc from Columbia/TriStar.

Oscar Worthy Film!

This movie features a captivating performance by Gillian Anderson, who should've received an Oscar nomination. If you're a fan of Edith Wharton you will love this movie, and those of you who have not read the novel will also find it enjoyable. The costumes are so beautiful that I found myself having to replay scenes because I was focusing all my attention on the costumes and not paying attention to the movie.
