This rowdy release from the comedy/drama series Californication includes all 12 episodes from the show's first season, following the story of a debauched writer whose inability to say "no" leads him down myriad paths to sex, drugs, and writer's block.

Buy This DVD!

This is one of the best shows on tv, brilliantly acted by David Duchovny. Duchovny already won a Golden Globe for this role and he is expected to receive an Emmy nomination as well.
What's great about it: Great Show!

The double-disc special edition of The Wizard of Oz is one of the two latest editions of the 1939 Victor Fleming film, released in October of 2005 -- it was preceded by the MGM/UA DVD at the end of the 1990s and the first Warner Bros. DVD edition a couple of years later; the latter, in particular, was very good in its time, in terms of the transfer and the bonus materials, but this re-release does, indeed, outclass it. For starters, the transfer is, if anything, even more crisp and reveals more detail in the image -- elements of the picture that are blurred or barely seen in the older Warner transfer, such as the details in the bricks on the Yellow Brick Road, can be seen in the new edition. The chaptering is close to what was used in the older Warner disc, but fine-tuned in location in some of the locations and breaks, and the sound is improved somewhat as well. The commentary by John Fricke and surviving cast and crew -- at least the third full-length commentary ever done on Oz, counting the one done by Ron Haver for The Criterion Collection laserdisc (which, itself, set a new standard for transfers of the movie) -- has been updated anew. There are featurettes on the cast and crew, the restoration of the movie, and a free-standing music-and-effects track on the first disc in the package, in tandem with the full-length movie. Disc two is loaded up with the Angela Lansbury-hosted making-of feature, which holds up extremely well, as well as the Memories of Oz television special -- but it's mostly filled with the new features "The Art of Imagination: A Tribute to Oz" and "Because of the Wonderful Things It Does: The Legacy of Oz," plus composer Harold Arlen's home movies, outtakes and test footage of the tornado sequences, and galleries of stills and trailers, and six hours of audio bonus features, including raw session recordings of the music and radio adaptations and promotional materials. The whole production is rather overwhelming unless its taken in stages, but it's all informative and entertaining, and it's well-nigh essential viewing for all but the most casual fans of the movie. As far as the movie is concerned -- but only in terms of the movie -- it's the ultimate resource for the fan and viewer. This isn't the last word on The Wizard of Oz or the world of Oz in cinematic terms, however -- for that, one can turn to the Three-Disc Collector's Edition, released simultaneously with this double-disc set in October of 2005.

Every child should grow up watching this movie, but you don't have to be a child to enjoy it. This movie is absolutely magical.

The first season of the acclaimed series St. Elsewhere takes place at Boston's St. Eligius Hospital, nicknamed "St. Elsewhere" due to its reputation as a last resort for poor and disenfranchised seeking medical care. Howie Mandel stars as the wisecracking Dr. Fiscus; David Morse as the dedicated Dr. Morrison; William Daniel as the egocentric Dr. Craig; and Ed Begley, Jr. as nerdy Dr. Ehrlich.

Not Up To Today's Standards

If you like medical dramas you'd be much better off buying a Grey's Anatomy DVD set or maybe an ER DVD set. Compared to today's tv shows St. Elsewhere is like a high school production. One website that lists actor credits mistakenly credited David Duchovny with an episode of this series causing this mistake to be spread throughout the media. David Duchovny does NOT appear in this series. I personally watched the episode in question, and the actor is definitely NOT David Duchovny. I'd give this DVD set 0 stars if Best Buy would let me.

Whether you've already been hooked or are oblivious to the severely addicting show that ABC and J.J. Abrams unleashed upon television, Lost: The Complete First Season is a set that no one should miss. Packed with top-quality extras and 24 hyper-fueled TV episodes that will have you glued to the set for hours on end, this collection gets the highest rating for excellence for both presentation and original content. Whether it's the candid behind-the-scenes featurettes, the bloopers, the audio commentaries, or the secret "Lost Flashbacks" scenes, there is just simply too much good stuff in here for anyone to not dive in. You won't find many secrets hidden here, but as most fans know, any Lost is good Lost -- and that means a whole lot.

A Must for Grey's Anatomy Fans

If you love Grey's Anatomy you will love this CD! What Grey's fan doesn't love How To Save A Life? I also love Over My Head (Cable Car), and Look After You is that great song featured in the tv commercial for the movie Things We Lost in the Fire.

Sydney Pollack's remake of Billy Wilder's Sabrina comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the theatrical trailer. While this Paramount release has superb picture and sound quality, the lack of extras makes it difficult to recommend to anyone other than a fan of the film.

It's hard to find a scary movie that's done well, and this is one of the best. Brad Pitt's performance is riveting.

After losing his license to work as a surgeon, synthetic-heroin addict Eugene Sands (David Duchovny) is on a downward spiral into the Los Angeles drug scene. One night, someone is shot in a bar, and Sands performs a life-saving medical maneuver on the spot. Word travels fast. A few days later, a limo drops him off at the Malibu den of counterfeiter-smuggler Raymond Blossom (Timothy Hutton) and his cupid-lipped moll Claire (Angelina Jolie). The bleach-haired Blossom needs someone to stitch up his hemorrhaging henchmen so they won't wind up answering questions at a hospital. He sees Sands as the ideal man to stop the flow of information and blood. It's a deal with the devil, but Sands accepts. Meanwhile, Claire has her eye on Sands, and FBI agent Gage (Michael Massee) has plans to bring down Blossom.

For David Duchovny Fans

This is not the greatest movie, but David Duchovny looks darn good in it. He has a nice shower scene, no nudity though. Angelina Jolie is also in this film, but if you're expecting some hot and heavy scenes between her and David Duchovny you can forget about it.

Bonnie Hunt's warmhearted romantic fable Return to Me comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Hunt and co-writer Don Lake, a music video, and a deleted scene featuring Carroll O'Connor, whose last film this was. This is a very strong disc from MGM/UA.
