This film had not been on home video in the US prior to this Blu-ray release. Thanks to GKIDS for distributing this beautiful film from the Studio Ghibli library. Disney has been releasing many Studio Ghibli films, but some films, like this one and Grave of the Fireflies and others are being released by other studios. The transfer is beautiful, and it shows off the amazing animation very well. You may not realize how old this film is while watching it on Blu-ray. Disney does a great job remastering films they release to Blu-ray, and if you have had concerns over the quality of this release from GKIDS, rest assured. It is fantastic. Colors pop. The lines are sharp. It's great.
Some may find the story a bit slow, but I only thought it dragged near the midway point, which is typical for a lot of Ghibli films, to be honest. However, I found this one dragged less than many. The film is funny and touching. I don't get emotional during films, generally, but by the end of this one, I was swelling up tears. I bought this film having never seen it before, which is always a risk, but I am glad I did. I loved it and I will watch it over and over.
I had the film on DVD and thought I would just stick with it, but the DVD I had was not anamorphic, so it didn't fill the screen on my 16:9 HDTV. I found this Blu-ray on sale in the bargain bin at Best Buy very cheap and had to buy it. If Office Space is one of your favorite comedies, definitely check the bargain bin at your local Best Buy and pick this one up!
This Blu-ray Steelbook is a great item for any collector. First, it uses the original and unmistakable original poster art for the film. This is the same release often found in the standard keep-case as of this writing. The cost of the Steelbook packaging is a few dollars more, but well worth it in my opinion.
The classic anime in a beautiful Steelbook. The standard edition Blu-ray is the same at a little less, but I opted for the Steelbook. Some may wonder why the cover does not include the iconic image we're used to seeing on previous home video releases, but the good news is that that classic image is inside the Steelbook, under the discs. Definitely recommended.
This may be a low-budget film, but the effects are amazing and the cinematography is top-notch. The setting is in an isolated modern home build on an island oasis by a high-tech genius designing an artificial intelligence so advanced, it may pass as human in the form of a beautiful young woman. A young male employee of his company 'wins' a stay with the CEO of the company on his remote island sanctuary for what he feels is a simple weekend hanging with the boss. In reality, he becomes a key in a social experiment to validate the effectiveness of this new AI.
The film is beautifully shot and very thought-provoking. Some might say it is slow, but my wife and I were totally engaged. It questions what is human and whether we should be challenging nature with AI that can think and feel emotions. Other films have treaded this territory as well, but this one has a different take on it and does it so masterfully with such incredible performances, that it cannot be missed.
On Blu-ray, this film looks amazing. Do yourself a favor and see this film.
