Another charming Studio Ghibli film

While not directed by Hayao Miyazaki, he did produce it, reportedly developing the story and contributing storyboards for the film. I love Ghibli films, but some are better paced than others. By the mid-way point I found myself drifting off and decided to take a break. I am glad I did. Later in the evening I picked up where I had left off and I found that the second half was much better. We needed the first half to get there, but it was the slower part of the story.
Essentially, this is a human story about young love and indecisiveness. A young girl finds love and struggles with her own identity and wanting to establish her path in life. She is creative and loves to read, which causes her to realize she may be a good writer. With some encouragement, she develops her first work. As a young person, she wants to make some brass decisions, and the adults try to persuade her to be more rational.
The use of John Denver's TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS was a bit of a surprise. I actually switched audio tracks to listen to the original Japanese...well, the track on the disc, which I am not entirely sure is the original dub.
Overall, this is an enjoyable film, but one that has a simple story and doesn't reach the pinnacle of Studio Ghibli films. Definitely worth a watch, but probably not one you have to own unless you are a completist of Ghibli films.

This film suffers the same problem as so many DCAU films: it strives too hard to stick closely to the original material on which it is based, which makes for a lackluster film. Even if you don't know the original story, you know where it is leading, partly because so many other DC media has done similar things with some of its characters. For instance, this storyline has also played out in Young Justice, and it was probably done better there than here. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad film, but there just aren't any surprises. I actually highly recommend the prior DCAU film, Justice League vs Teen Titans. It gives you more character development. I love the Teen Titans characters, and I wanted more from this film.

Wolf Children is a beautiful and beautifully animated tale of a mother raising two wolf children after their father passes. The settings are very nice, with the story progressing from city, to country, to school and watching the children find their own paths. They turn from human to wolf, being human-wolf hybrids, when they are stressed. Other times, they are free to be their wolf sides in the absence of humans. It is a good story, but at two hours, it is a bit too long. I found it satisfying, but not worth a re-watch, personally. So, I recommend renting it or finding it on a streaming service rather than purchasing it for your collection.

Okay. It isn't that the product is bad. I have smart devices that already do what I needed from a Roku. The stick was fairly responsive, but it didn't offer me any real benefits. I didn't like the interface. It seems antiquated in comparison to others like Apple TV and Fire TV. Some apps are still using the very old UI from the original Roku days. The YouTube app was odd on the Roku. On the PS3, the navigation is more animated and fluid. On the Roku, the animation was lost and the thumbnails were in lower resolution. Once you played a video, it was fine. But I found the low-res thumbnails to be very strange.
Also, because Roku was offering $25 in free content with the offer, one of the Best Buy's I took it to initially said they could not accept it unless I paid them the $25 for the bundle, which I did not redeem. But, when I called my local store, they were able to work with me and said that the other store should have accepted the return. So, obviously, some people need more training.

Kings of Leon's Wall is a great mix of songs. I am not the best at reviewing music, but I will say that this is the only KOL album I own, although I do enjoy some of their other songs. The entire album is great. Definitely recommended.

Another Good Entry to the Franchise

The first film in the Star Trek reboot caused me to take notice of the franchise. I was never a Trekkie. I had seen the show on as a kid, and there were the many other TV shows that came after to expand on the universe, but I wasn't interested. For me, the Abrams film helped me understand the characters and it had plenty of action and special effects, elevating it from a low-budget sci-fi TV series to a full-blown blockbuster film.
I was let down by Into Darkness, the followup film, so I was apprehensive about this film, but there were positive reviews overall. Seeing it, I thought it was a good film. The characters were interesting and they told a good story without too much grandiose storytelling or overuse of nostalgia. I will need to revisit it again to see if my opinion changes.

I went into this film with low expectations. I did not like Zack Snyder's take on Superman and there was a lot of negative feedback regarding this film. But having seen it, it's actually a good ride. I had a good time with this film. Others criticized the motivations of the characters, but I didn't see that as an issue. Even the trailers made it clear what Batman's motivations for disliking Superman were going to be, and it made sense as a plot device. Lex Luthor in this film is over-the-top and annoying, but that was intentional, I suppose. We are not supposed to like him. However, we are supposed to like Wonder Woman, and she shines in every scene in which she appears. She is perfectly cast for the role.
The effects are great. The pacing is good, even though this extended cut is close to three hours, which Hollywood can stop doing anytime now. Honestly, find editors and trim these films down to 80-120 minutes. It's just ridiculous. Sure. I'll watch an epic like Lawrence of Arabia for 3 hours, but many of the films approaching 2.5 to 3 hours are not worthy of that sort of time. It's not necessary.
If you're looking for a good action film and superheroes, this certainly fits the bill. The Blu-ray looks great. I hear the HDR on the 4K Blu-ray looks great as well. Definitely recommended.

The Thing Collector's Edition had been available on Blu-ray online, but I was having difficulty finding it in any retail stores. Then I checked with my local Best Buy and they had it. I was very excited. It's great that Best Buy is carrying stock of the Shout! Factory titles because they are truly excellent releases, and The Thing is no exception. It includes a beautiful slipcover with reversible art of the original Drew Struzan artwork. There are two Blu-ray discs in this package, one of which is strictly for the bonus features. This release is loaded with extras. There are new interviews and retrospectives. There is a 30-minute interview with John Carpenter, discussing the making of the film. Then there is an hour-long feature on the men of the outpost in the film. They each discuss their characters and the real-life experience of filming the movie in the cold. Kurt Russel is absent, but practically everyone else is here, including Wilford Brimley. Plus, there are more. And you get several commentaries. I do believe the old Universal commentary is on here as well. Thanks to BB for carrying it and having it at a great price; it was less than Amazon.

Another Excellent Studio Ghibli Film

Kiki's Delivery Service is a beatifully-animated and heartfelt tale from Studio Ghibli. It may be difficult for some viewers to latch onto, particularly older viewers and men, as there is no major conflict. This story centers on a young witch, Kiki, and her adventures growing up and starting a delivery service. Still, it is a joy to watch. The Blu-ray looks fantastic. Recommended.

One of Studio Ghibli's Best

Princess Mononoke was the first Studio Ghibli film I saw and I was pleasantly surprised by the film. I was not sure what to expect, and the film took me to places I did not expect. This is a highly-recommended film, but parents should be aware that there is some blood and violence in this film. It really isn't a film for small children and, in fact, many younger viewers won't understand or appreciate the film. The themes of the film deal with the environment, war, spiritualism and so much more. The character designs and animation are gorgeous, as you would expect from Studio Ghibli. The Blu-ray looks great, but it lacks the original Japanese audio. I kept the old Dimension DVD for this reason. The picture quality is better on Blu-ray, but it isn't a major leap, as the previous DVD was pretty good already. I definitely recommend this film to those who appreciate great cinema.
