A solid mid-range laptop with lots of features

The Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 16" FHD+ Touch Laptop is a solid, mid-range Windows 11 computer for home, family, hobby, and light-to-medium business use. It has a mid-range 8GB RAM and a mid-range Intel i5 processor. Though this is a 16" laptop, it is light enough to carry easily. It provides two USB-C "Thunderbolt" ports, two USB 2.0/3.0 ports for legacy accessories, and one HDMI port for an external monitor, plus one XD memory card slot for digital camera enthusiasts and one headphones port. The web cam shutter is a nice privacy feature that allows you to cover the web cam when not in use. The bright, crisp touch screen folds back so you can use it as a tablet and use the screen for presentations.

Comfortable wireless ear buds at a good price

The Amazon Echo Buds (2nd Gen) True Wireless In-Ear Headphones are reasonably comfortable and pair easily with my iPhone.
Pros: compact, true wireless, charge with supplied USB-A to USB-C cable, hard case with magnetic lid. Works with Alexa and Amazon Music, so you have the flexibility of hands-free voice connection to your phone, plus music streaming from the Cloud. Easy to charge. Supplied with four different size ear bud covers and two sizes of wing tips for a custom fit. Tap on either ear bud to answer your phone, go forward one track, go back one track, etc. You can set the ear buds for noise pass-through, when you are talking on the phone, or without pass-through when you want to listen to music. Use the up and down buttons on your phone to control the volume, or use the volume control in your music app.
Cons: Must use Amazon Alexa app to connect ear buds, though you can see the ear buds are connected in your phone's Bluetooth settings. The ear bud fit test failed twice while I tried out the different ear bud covers. When the test was a success, I saw only one bar ("Fair" test result). However, the sound is good, especially at moderate volume.
A nice set of true wireless earbuds at a good price.

The APC Back-UPS 450 VA 6-Outlet Battery Back-Up and Surge Protector can be a lifesaver if you live in an area where power surges and short outages are common. Plug your cable modem, router, and/or wireless mesh system into the Back-up Battery to protect your equipment from power surges and to provide uninterrupted power for over two hours.
This UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery by Schneider Electric comes unactivated. To activate it, pull the tab on the bottom of the battery and plug the tab in to the unit where indicated. Plug the unit into an A/C outlet to charge it.
The unit provides four backup power/surge protection outlets plus two surge protection-only outlets. The outlets are widely spaced to accommodate large power supply plugs. I connected a cable modem/router and a wireless mesh system to the back-up outlets and still had plenty of outlets for a computer, printer, and more.
The unit charges quickly. A green light indicates a full charge. A nice safety feature prevents turning off the backup battery accidentally; the power on/off switch has a delay. It operates quietly, does not generate excessive heat, and has a small footprint, so you can place in under or on top of your desk.

The Logitech MX Keys Mini Keyboard for Mac is a solid, full-featured keyboard that connects wirelessly to Mac devices. It is slightly wider than my Apple Bluetooth keyboard and sits at the same comfortable typing angle. the keys are a bit larger and offer common Apple keys such as Cmd, Control, Option, plus an Apple emoji key among the 12 function keys in the top row.
It has a built-in, rechargeable battery that you charge using the supplied USB-C cable. The on-off switch lets you turn off the keyboard when not in use.
You can pair the keyboard with multiple devices; there are three quick keys on the top row for different devices. I paired the keyboard via Bluetooth with an iPad Air, and then with a MacBook Pro.
You can turn off the keyboard's backlight or change its brightness using the function keys. The emoji key opens the alternate character keyboard so you can type Command, Option, other symbols, and emojis.
Pros: backlit, full-sized keys, nice feel, extras on the Function keys. Rechargeable battery. Small enough to stow in a backpack or briefcase.
Cons: a bit heavier than the Apple wireless mini keyboard. Charging cable has USB-C connections only, so you will need an adapter to charge the keyboard with older Mac computers.

The Satechi USB-C 7-in-1 multiport dock packs lots of capability in a very small package. It has two USB Type A (2.0 or 3.0) ports, HDMI, USB-C, SD, SD micro, and Ethernet ports. The USB-C ports lets you charge your computer via the dock.
I tested this Satechi multiport dock on a late-model MacBook Pro, and it worked well. This adapter is small and sleek, and easy to take with you if you use your computer away from your home or office. It has a matte space gray finish.

The Bose Smart Soundbar packs a lot of sound in a small package. This high-end soundbar performs better than the larger, competitor’s brand it replaces. It’s low profile allows our TV remote to easily access the TV sensor without having to do contortions.
The Bose 900 Soundbar comes in a corrugated outer box and a beautiful, purpose-built retail box. Accessories fit into a small area in the bottom of the purpose-built box, with no wasted packaging.
Set up the Soundbar with the free Bose smartphone app. Pair the soundbar with your TV. Use the supplied headset to customize the sound profile to your room. Then use the smartphone app or the supplied remote to operate the soundbar.

The Dell XPS 15 FHD has the pedigree for creatives, gamers and knowledge workers. It has an Intel Core i7 chip, a whopping 16 GB of RAM, a beautiful nearly 16-inch screen powered by a GeForce graphics card, and a high-capacity 512 GB solid state hard drive. Thiss all comes in a thin and light aluminum case.
I tested the XPS 15 with MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite apps. Illustrator worked flawlessly with large graphics files and several programs opened. The colors are bright and true, and the screen is large enough for a graphic designer to work without connecting to a larger, external monitor.
The XPS-15 has two USB-C ports on the left and one on the right side of the case. It has a laptop lock slot on the left, plus headphone port and SD card slots on the right. I connected a Dell USB-C mini hub so I could use a Bluetooth mouse with a USB-3 connector. The XPS-15 comes with a USB-C power “brick,” which is slim, though larger than the competition’s.
The machine boots up quickly. It has a fingerprint sensor on the power switch. The sensor worked when I first set up the laptop, now does not work well (maybe because of multiple hand washings since setup?). It is easy to log in with a digital passcode. The XPS-15 runs quietly and does not generate lots of heat.
Pros:
- Thin, lightweight, 16:10 screen aspect ratio with bright colors and good resolution.
- Fast, plenty of RAM, large SSD hard drive.

The Level Touch Invisible Smart Lock is beautifully finished and comes in high-end, purpose-built packaging with no waste materials. This Smart Lock works though a Bluetooth connection to your phone. You can use the lock if you carry your smartphone, one of the credit card-sized key cards, or one of the provided keys with you.
The installation instructions are clear and thorough. The instructions walk you through removal of your existing deadbolt and installation of the Level Touch deadbolt. You have a choice of short or long screws—the long ones would make the installation more secure. All you need is a Phillips-head screwdriver… That is, if the Touch Smart Lock is the exact dimensions of the deadbolt lock you want to replace, and if your deadbolt works smoothly without pushing or pulling the door when you turn the bolt. Our installation took about 90 minutes, and required quite a bit of chiseling. The door frame was very hard wood and we had to use the shorter screws because we did not have a long enough drill bit to make a pilot hole for the longer screws. If the Smart Lock is not a perfect fit for the deadbolt you are replacing, and you are not handy with tools. you will need a carpenter or handyman to install the deadbolt.
The Level app controls the smart lock. It is easy to install the app (I installed it on my iPhone) and pair with the lock. You can choose “touch to lock” and/or “touch to unlock” or have the device unlock automatically when you come within range. You cannot lock and unlock multiple times without leaving your home area. This is a disadvantage if you have the Level Touch deadbolt installed on a door that you lock and unlock frequently, without leaving your home area—for example, a back door or a garage door.
Remote use of the Level Touch Invisible Smart Lock requires the use of apple HomeKit and the latest version of iOS or iPadOS and an apple device—a HomePod, AppleTV, or iPad set up as a home hub. This allows remote unlocking and voice control with Siri. If you choose, you can use this Smart Lock with your phone, without setting up your home hub.
All told, this is a great-looking Smart Lock; outsiders would not be able to tell it from a normal deadbolt. It is a well-built, nicely finished piece of hardware with electronics and battery hidden inside. The firmware has data encryption.

The Shark Air Purifier 6 houses six fans and a large charcoal filter in its tall, sleek housing. It is easy to set up and operate—remove it from the box, open the filter compartment to unwrap the filter, and plug it into an electrical outlet. Touch the power button on top of the unit, and the Shark Air Purifier “reads” how clean your air is. The display tells you if your air is clean (100%) or if it needs cleaning, and the estimated time (minutes) to reach 100%. The air data button tells you the air quality for three sizes of particulate matter (1, 2.5, and 10 micrograms). The filter life button tells you the remaining filter life (when new, the filter is rated for 4400 hours). The auto button adjusts the fan speed as needed to clean your air, or you can set the fan speed manually. The fan is very quiet at its slowest speed, and quiet at medium speed, too.
Bottom line: well-designed and easy to use. I could not rate this air purifier higher, as my air was too clean to start!

The eufy Slim Video Security Doorbell pairs with your Android or Apple smartphone. Download the eufy Security app and it walks you through the setup steps. The Quickstart Guide also helps you through setup, or watch the video after you activate the eufy Security app. You need only a screwdriver to install on a wooden door frame. You may need a drill for other surfaces. Everything else is included.
The eufy Slim Video Doorbell features a 1080p camera. You can set the video streaming quality if you want to save energy, or if you have a slow WiFi connection. The doorbell works on any 2.4 Gb WiFi network.
The eufy app features many settings for doorbell chime tone and volume, motion detection, detection zone settings, and more. You can use the default settings, or customize to your heart’s content.
The doorbell chime plugs into a standard electrical outlet. During setup, you connect the chime to your WiFi network, then connect the doorbell itself. The doorbell stores videos on a micro SD card that pops into the side of the doorbell chime.
The eufy doorbell comes with a USB charging cord. Plug the cord into any powered USB outlet to fully charge the doorbell. The battery should last for 90 days or more between charges.
I tested the doorbell on an overcast day, so the person approaching the door was backlit, but still recognizable. You can try adjusting the video capture settings in the app. If you have Alexa, you can pair the doorbell with Alexa.
The bottom line: unboxing was easy, setup took moderate effort, as I had to try several times to get both the chime and the doorbell registered with the app, and installation of the doorbell was easy. I would recommend this device.

Do these eufy cam's have a limited duration for recording the event, like another brand that only records 12 seconds unless you pay for a subscription? Also, does eufy impose a minimum off-time between recording events, like 5 min minimum between events?
You can choose 30-second or 60-second recordings. I do not know what the “off time” is, though you can make changes in the app. There is no subscription fee for eufy.

It would really be nice to have a link to the manual. Only comes with one battery? What is the model of a spare battery and how much is it? No info on Shark site or anywhere. Strange for $350.
This model comes with a single, rechargeable battery that lasts up to 60 minutes (the original DuoClean had two batteries that lasted up to 30 minutes each. This model requires only the power adapter, meaning that you can charge the battery while inserted into the vacuum or removed from the vacuum. The battery is Model XSBT750, and is rated to last for two years. I do not know the cost of a spare battery.

How is this charged? If it has rechargeable batteries , can you use the older model of the cordless’s batteries?
The Vertex DuoClean comes with one rechargeable battery, which is different from the batteries on the original DuoClean model. The Vertex comes with a power adapter that you plug directly into the battery. Therefore, you can charge the battery while inserted into the vacuum, or removed from the vacuum.

I wish this had two batteries like the previous unit that I own and use currently. Is there a bundle option with a second battery somewhere?
This updated model has only one battery because the battery can last for up to 60 minutes. I have the original DuoClean model with two batteries; the two batteries each last less than 30 minutes. Maybe that’s why there is only one battery; I do not know if there is a two-battery bundle available.

Will it stand upright with no help?
If you try to stand this vacuum with the power head and battery, it is top-heavy. You can fold it and leave it upright without tipping over, or you can lean the power head on a counter or table if you need to leave it for a few minutes. I fold mine for storage, so it does not tip over.
