Michael Crichton only directed a few films, but his novels have been made into some great and not-so-great flicks; JURASSIC PARK being one of the former! WESTWORLD (written AND directed by him) prefigures some of the system-breakdown/machines-run-themselves elements that feel like more a part of our lives today than they ever would've been in 1973. Yul Brynner's iconic Wild West death machine is certainly worth the price of admission, as is James Brolin's easygoing pseudo-hero. The disc looks and sounds great & should be on the shelf of every self-respecting sci-fi cineaste.

Arriving just before "Horror" returned to the cinema for the 21st century, JOY RIDE certainly fits that description, while still living within the defined rules of a "thriller". Fun performances from the 3 leads, good pacing & an easy-to-get-into story from J.J. Abrams puts this on a must-watch list for modern horror enthusiasts. Add an awesome and uncredited vocal presence from Ted (Buffalo Bill) Levine & you know it's worthwhile. Great & cheap HD addition to the chiller/thriller home library.

Produced by creature-maker extraordinaire Stan Winston, WRONG TURN was among the vital horror flicks of the early 21st century that brought horror back to mainstream cinema. Alongside CABIN FEVER, SAW & HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, this film reminded audiences (and more importantly, Hollywood execs) how much fun it was to be scared at the movies (and not just "thrilled", as the 90s had folks believing). With a mutated, degenerate cannibal family laying traps & hunting human flesh as the premise, WT has great pacing, great effects & a true horror flick feel. A cheap & lovely addition to the hi-def collection!

Continuing a series based on different adventures had by the protagonists is already a better move than resurrecting a killer over & over again for sequels (said the slasher flick aficionado). The Warrens are a fascinating true bit of ghostly history and made for a great flick in the first CONJURING. Part 2 brings a more involved story, a nice broad scope of time and place & decent pacing to lead you through the darkness. My only issue is that the film takes on a very sentimental tone about 2/3 of the way through. This in part bolsters the sense of danger and what's on the line for our heroes, but feels overkill for a second entry into a horror movie series. I would prefer to give it 3.5 stars, but 3 will do!

Caught this one in the theater and felt immediately like it earned its place among flicks like PLATOON & APOCALYPSE NOW. (Hey, maybe that's cinema blasphemy, but I didn't say it was BETTER, did I?) Sound design & story structure keep a tight pace in this thrilling & dark piece about the darkness of war. Great to find the blu-ray for the the right price!

The initial premise of a costume that refuses to be removed is ripe with possibilities. Combining a "legend" of clowns that likens them to boogey men & a dark feeling of violent danger, CLOWN provides some uncomfortably creepy moments, pretty decent gore & a dark finale. I find these elements lacking in many modern horror stories & was quite pleased to find them here in this decaying demon suit of a movie.
This release features all sixteen episodes from the sixth season of the AMC smash hit series The Walking Dead, following Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) attempts to lead the survival of humans amidst the zombie apocalypse in Alexandria, Virginia. Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, and Chandler Riggs co-star in the pulse-pounding season six, as more survivors are discovered and the viability of the Alexandria community comes into question.

I've followed a small handful of modern TV shows & often find they run too long for their own good. I've enjoyed TWD since the beginning & started to get that fear around season 4. It had already reached immense popularity and that can often be the death knell for something of quality. However, the production team seems utterly unwilling to allow that to happen, as they've come back with another dark, emotionally rich & very fun season. The ending is one of the darkest cliffhangers I feel like I've seen anywhere in many years. Hails to writers, directors, actors, FX people, producers & everyone else who bring these characters to life for us!

NIGHTCRAWLER is a very uncomfortable flick. Gyllenhall's lead is not likable; in fact, few characters are in this ode to greed & the night. The movie very successfully evokes the wave of 80s neo-noir and rarely strays from topic in its portrayal of an unrelenting sociopath. There is a minor subplot involving a relationship with Rene Russo's character that is grossly underdeveloped and became distracting at a point, but the film is very much worth a watch. As much as I like dark character pieces about psychotic murderers, it is refreshing to watch something that lies a bit closer to possible reality when it comes to nut jobs!

I very much enjoyed DONNIE DARKO. I'm not entirely certain how it became the "classic" that it did, but it is a very fun film, with enough character layers & storylines to allow for repeat viewings. It strangely reminds my of a sci-if version of MAGNOLIA. I was NOT much of a fan of the director's cut; I felt like it removed the punch of so much of the flick. Fortunately, this lovely, 2disc edition gives you BOTH versions plus extras, so you (or I) can go back through & rediscover what those many layers reveal, or just enjoy the great soundtrack & often darkly surreal visuals.

The visual storytelling of WE ARE... is deliberately slow, and considering the movie is recent, this threatened to put me off. Overly artiness for no purpose can be a real turn-off, no matter what kind of movie it is. However, when all the story threads sewn through that build-up (which basically paints a picture of cold isolation) come to a head, the pay-off is definitely worth it. Barbara Crampton is great, as are her fellow cast members, including maverick horror director/producer Larry Fessenden; it's refreshing to watch a cast that doesn't look like a gathering of models. Without spoiling anything, let's say the WE ARE combines classic haunted house material with a healthy slice of Lovecraft & small-town-weirdness.
