Costner still has it

In Criminal, Kevin Costner (who is barely recognizable in this movie) puts in a moving performance as Jericho, a brain-damaged criminal who turns out to be the perfect test subject for a memory implant procedure. Tommy Lee Jones (who looks like he is around 120 years old in this picture) drifts through the movie as the mad scientist who the CIA pays to conduct some experimental brain surgery. I normally love Tommy Lee Jones, but most of the time in this movie he looks like he is either falling asleep or on his deathbed.
Costner winds-up with a dead CIA agent's (Ryan Reynolds) memories implanted into his skull, which come leaking out as the movie moves along. Gary Oldman puts in a solid performance as Costner's CIA handler and Gal Gadot plays the CIA agent's grieving wife.
The movie starts out looking like a by-the-numbers spy movie, with Reynolds making a brief appearance at the beginning. After a bit of backstory on the main characters the theme switches gears to a high-speed thriller, punctuated by some compelling interaction between Costner and Gadot. I wouldn't quite call this a sci-fi movie, but the whole "brain transfer" thing obviously has some sci-fi elements to it.
As plots go, the movie is pretty average. Bad guy is chased by main character, who himself may or may not be a bad guy. What really gives this film its strength is the great performance by Costner though. He pretty much carries this movie. I'm not normally a huge Costner fan, but he really stepped-up his game for this role. It was a good enough performance that I actually had no idea that Kevin Costner was the main character until I saw the final credits roll. His face and voice are pretty much unrecognizable.
Anyway, it was a fun movie to watch and I really enjoyed it. It's definitely worth your time.

If you are a fan of the first "Now You See Me" film, you will really enjoy this follow-up. It is definitely a movie where you should have seen the first one to follow and properly understand the characters.
Picking up where the first film left off, the Horsemen are in hiding, but emerge with a new plan. Things are not as they seem, of course, and the plot takes off from there.
The cast is bigger, but the acting is great. I was skeptical with the loss of Isla Fisher, but Lizzy Caplan brings her own character into the story, and she is a welcome addition. I didn't feel like she was just a replacement for the female lead, but a very likable and important part of the team in her own right. Daniel Radcliff brings his own new character into play and performs the heck out of it.
The effects are spectacular, and the twists are impressive, as you would expect.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but only if you've seen the first

I find that I am liking Scott Adkins more as he is getting older. His early movies were amateurish at best. Now there is a bit more meat to them. This movie and don't get me wrong is a typically themed movie that we have all seen many times. Scott plays an MMA fighter who accidentally kills his best friend in the ring and of course retires until he gets an offer to fight for a million dollars. Well, it isn't what he thought he gets hunted by a group of people who have paid big bucks to hunt a man. As I've said nothing groundbreaking but Scott Adkins has been getting to be a more appealing actor these days. If you like action, here you go. Just sit back and go for this ride.

If you Google the word “microcosm”, the definition describes the movie Free State of Jones: “a community, place, or situation regarded as encapsulating in miniature the characteristic qualities or features of something much larger.” Jones County, Mississippi becomes representative of the situation throughout the South during and after the Civil War. Matthew McConaughey ought to be Oscar-nominated for this movie, I think. He plays a Confederate soldier turned deserter named Newton Knight, who is appalled by the unfairness of the exemptions which the wealthiest southerners get from fighting if they have at least 20 slaves. Because he’s willing to defend southerners who are being looted by Confederate soldiers, and also treats black people kindly, he inspires a following of both white and black supporters, and is willing to defend his black supporters in a scene where a white supporter tries to provoke strife (which likely happened in real life). After the war, he continues to be involved in fighting for racial equality. The movie is a very engrossing experience. The dialogue is really realistic and true to the era, including in the role which Christianity played in the community, and the movie uses captions to describe changes of locations and political events very effectively. Newton Knight feels relatable to an audience because he is just reacting, one choice at a time, to the things that are happening around him, and he chooses to defy an unjust government that’s not representing him, and repudiate its racist values, without any of those contrived scenes where he suddenly changes his values. He’s just a normal guy who is unusual for how willing he is to stand up for justice. There are several interesting scenes taking place in the 1940s where his descendant is also forced to take a stand for what he believes during a miscegenation (interracial marriage) trial. This movie ought to be shown in schools, and I hope it will be (the only part that may be too much for sensitive eyes is the opening battle scene), and also should've gottet Oscar attention and be viewed by many people.

By The Numbers Sequel (But Still Funny)

My wife and I saw Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising in theaters when it came out in 2016 . As soon as it was released to DVD, it became part of our home collection. Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne are at it again, this time versus the local sorority. The movie is about a couple who is looking to sell their home. It seems like the opportune time since the fraternity next door is gone, but enter a new sorority, with Efron as their mentor. Hilarity ensues as Rogen and Bryne go to war against Efron and his adopted sorority. War is declared as Rogen and Bryne find themselves pranking the Sorority and vice versa. It is laugh out loud funny. My wife and I can relate to this style of sarcastic humor. It may seem brash, or crude, but you can't please everyone. Film buffs and critics alike certainly will not enjoy this movie, but if you're just looking for a laugh, I recommend sitting down with a beer and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

Anchor Bay has re-released John Carpenter's 1978 masterpiece "Halloween" about as many times as they have the Evil Dead trilogy. It's been almost impossible to know which one to pick up over the years there are so many versions. Halloween was originally released on DVD by Anchor Bay featuring a bad transfer that didn't do the film any justice at all. They then re-released it again on DVD with a transfer approved by the original director of photography Dean Cundey. The transfer was greatly improved but it was lacking in extras for a film of such great importance. Then they released another cut of the film in which the extra scenes filmed for the TV airings of the film (filmed during the making of the sequel oddly enough) were cut into the film. A 4th DVD release then occured as part of their "divimax" line which was a 2 disc set with plentiful extras and a brand new remastered transfer.
That 4th DVD release proved to be the most problematic. While the quality of detail was greatly improved, somebody made a huge error in that they completely stripped away the blue tint from the film that made it appear that it was set in the fall. It just didn't look how Halloween was meant to look. A backlash ensued and Anchor Bay claimed to have taken those complaints into consideration with Halloween's blu-ray debut.
While the initial blu-ray release did correct some of the color timing errors of the divimax DVD release, it still just didn't look right and it was obvious that they didn't film the movie actually in the fall as the grass was too green and the night time scenes lacked that famous blue tint that gave the film such a great atmosphere.
Anchor Bay though have FINALLY righted their previous wrongs and brought director of photography Dean Cundey on board again to supervise the transfer for the film's 35th (has it really been that long?!) anniversary blu-ray re-release. After directly comparing the new blu-ray to the old blu-ray, I can say that they have FINALLY gotten it right and Halloween looks as it was meant to be seen again.
The colors in the new transfer are a bit more muted and natural looking than the first HD go around. The blue textures in the night scenes are back in full force and the film looks like it is set in the fall season once again! Not only that, but detail has taken a considerable boost with the new HD transfer compared to the first one. This is apparently due to the higher bit rate on the new release in addition to I believe they actually did a 4K scan this time of the original camera negative. It's truly like seeing the film again for the first time. No digital noise reduction was used so the film retains its filmlike grain texture. A truly amazing HD transfer of one of the greatest films ever made.
The sound is provided in a new 7.1 surround mix but the original mono mix is also included. Both are in lossless HD audio. Extras include a brand new commentary track featuring star Jamie Lee Curtis and director/co-writer/composer John Carpenter. Sadly though, the commentary tracks on the prior releases are missing in action. Most extras were ported over but not all from prior releases as well. This is a bit frustrating and keeps this from being as definitive of a release as it could have been. What is here though is nice and the best is a nearly one hour documentary of Jamie Lee Curtis doing her one and only horror convention to help raise money for a children's hospital charity that she supports.
The initial pressing of the new blu-ray also is included in a nice & classy digi-book featuring essays and lots of cool production photos. Apparently once this initial run is depleted, it will only be available in a standard blu-ray case so get the digi-pack while you can.
So, I highly recommend this new blu-ray to fans of the film as they finally got the film looking like it was supposed to look again and the new HD transfer is truly a marvel to the eyes. Why they chose not to include all previous extras too on this release is a bit frustrating but shouldn't keep somebody from not getting this new release. It blows the original bu-ray away picture quality wise and comes highly recommended!

Great quick buy, this lets you get both Divimax Special Editions(in their own disc) for a low price. The one I got had a few holes in the plastic cover, but aside from that it worked well. I got this mainly because the Writer Commentary track by Alan B McElroy is on it and will not be ported over to the new Halloween Complete Collection Blu-Ray Set

Another Great $5 Buy

This movie came out in 1992 so Many have already discussed the plot, its significance, acting etc so I will refrain from redundancy and focus solely upon the transfer to Blu Ray for this 5 star drama. I will say that it is fun to see actors, now famous, in small parts at the beginning of their careers like Christopher Guess and Cuba Gooding Jr.
VIDEO...The transfer is pretty clean and actually seemed to get better as the movie proceeded. This might be because the indoor court scenes are more controlled in their lighting than outdoor scenes might be. The color grading appeared very natural with good skin tones and warm coloration during most of the film. Night scenes tend to be a touch cooler as one might expect. At no time did I see any artifacting or any other issues with the film. There is a soft grain throughout but nothing that would distract anyone. The contrast is especially good for the close ups and wide shots are done with a relatively narrow depth of field so that backgrounds, more often than not, are gently out of focus.
AUDIO...The audio is a lossless PCM 5.1 which brings a positively transient openness to your speakers. As this is a dialogue driven film, I would venture to guess that 95% of your audio will be from the center channel. The front side channels have a few instances of directional foley sounds but they are really very few. Your LFE channel will be and stay asleep as even the couple of lightning instances towards the end of the film do not go deep enough to allow your sub to do much. Of course, this might also depend upon where your crossover is set on the sub. For me, mine took a vacation.
The extras include typical commentary, interviews with some of the actors, writer and director and a making of. Jack Nicholson did not take part in any of the interviews but many who did glad handed him without revealing much at all.
Also, and this I hate on discs, are previews for other movies and a small promotion for Blu Ray itself. I would bet my bottom dollar that this film was not remastered at all since many of the 'Coming to Blu Ray' films listed have been out for a great many years.
All in all, for a great courtroom drama and a film that retains its legs, 'A Few Good Men' was well worth the small price I paid. Just know that it is not a demo disc by any means.
All my reviews focus solely on the quality of the transfers to Blu Ray of both video and audio and I do hope that this review has been of some help to you in deciding upon your purchase decisions and that I am on the correct path with this type of review.
Thanks for readin

Cheap Buy

The millennials may think that this film will only seem good to those who saw it in the 80s and that people who have never seen it shouldn't. Well I really have to disagree, a few months ago I bought this Blu Ray for 5 bucks and it was one of the best 5 bucks I ever spent. This film is great. If you actually like real horror films then you should like this film. So if you're a fan of horror and haven't seen this film yet you should go out and buy it right now. The BLU RAY is amazing by the way and pretty cheap.
