Awesome 2-in-1 laptop with latest gen intel CPU!
on March 17, 2021
Posted by: Bren
from Central Point, OR
My general impression of this 2-in-1 laptop is that between the form factor, battery life, and high-powered CPU in this device, it will please any student or professional on the go who is looking for the combined functionality of a tablet and a laptop.
This keyboard is absolutely pure bliss. It takes all my favorite elements of a keyboard that includes tactility and proper placement of keys and combines them with perfect attack, stroke depth, and creates a wonderful typing experience on a laptop with a footprint this thin and small in general. The keys are best suited to burst-typing in my opinion. I achieved over a 60-second 10fastfingers.com test about 83WPM typing, which is right up there with my favorite of all time 2015 Macbook Pro keyboard. The only aspect of the keyboard that I dislike is the pg up and pg down buttons being directly above the left and right arrow keys. More than once, even in the typing of this review, I have accidently tapped either of those keys and launched myself away from where I was intending to navigate. I would suggest to dell a software method of turning these pg up and pg down keys off and making it so you can just use a key combination like windows key+up or down key instead.
The FHD screen of this model is what I consider perfect for a laptop this size and for the usages I intend of future schoolwork, Word processing, web navigation, and productivity work in general. Most professional reviewers will agree that small laptop screens such as these gain subjectively marginal visual benefits for increased pixel density but can suffer greatly with shortened battery life as the battery gets taxed trying to power the increased demand of a higher-resolution screen. The stock resolution of 1920 X 1200 looks fantastic in my opinion as it gives you more vertical space to navigate on a screen this size. It also came stock at 150% zoom for icon size etc. and I think this works nicely too for the visual appeal of the laptop and navigation.
As a primary Apple MBP user, I am heartily surprised by how much I am enjoying the touchscreen functionality of this 2-in-1 laptop. Sometimes, it just feels nice when sitting on the couch to flip the screen over and go into touch screen mode, navigating around with simple gestures and touches of the incredibly responsive screen. The only thing to note here is that, because of the beautiful infinityedge display here that all but eliminates bezels around the entirety of the laptop screen, you really don’t have much to hold onto. While this is not as focused and functional in tablet mode as a dedicated tablet, it will likely please anyone who is looking for a two-in-one.
Tests: On Cinebench R15 OpenGL it got 77.22fps. Awesome. On CPU is got 270cb. Both of these figures are incredibly respectable and would have been considered impossible four years ago on an Ultrabook device when I first got into laptops and reviewing them.
The trackpad I would say is serviceable but not my favorite I have had on a laptop. It appears to be a springboard type trackpad when means the bottom will have good action when pressing the keyboard to click but the top requires a firmer press. After all my experiences with force touch trackpads with Apple, I just cannot hold any trackpad in higher esteem than those. But this one is nice and relatively large considering the absolutely tiny footprint of this 13.4” screen laptop.
The wifi antenna for this is the Killer Wi-fi AX1650s 160MHz and is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will not be replacing it. Historically, I have not been a fan of Killer for my wifi network adapters as I have found their drivers to be unstable and to have caused drops of connection in previous laptops I have owned of Dell make like my old Alienware 17 R4. Thus far in this laptop though, I have not noticed any issues in the connectivity or internet speeds.
The SSD in this particular model is an NVME drive made by KIOXA, and there is something wrong with this drive. In initiating the CrystalDiskMark test, this drive emitted a God-awful squealing noise audible from a couple feet away from the laptop. It is a sound remarkably like coil whine. Within a minute of initiating the benchmark test, the fan of the laptop ramped up and upon touching the very top right of the keyboard deck I realized that the laptop was getting hot! According to HWmonitor, the temperature of the laptop got up to 100 degrees Celsius, which for me us unheard of for just the simple read/write testing of an SSD! I even got a replacement model of this laptop and tried the test again, and sure enough it was the same result. A disclaimer here though is that the laptop only did this the first time the test was initiated. In future iterations of the test, I did not have that issue.
I have to offer some nitpicks here, just as I hope that Dell may read them and consider. First, as with many Windows devices, this laptop comes with a large amount of bloatware that is unnecessary given how high end this device is. McAfee is annoying and invasive and seems to pop up on your screen at the most random of times to interrupt your work and remind you to download their anti-virus software. This was annoying and I uninstalled it quickly. I also dislike how, with all Windows devices, Microsoft absolutely ASSAULTS YOU with their insistence that you use their Microsoft Edge browser. I find it patronizing and distracting to be going about my everyday tasks and to be constantly interrupted. On a Dell specific note, I dislike the popups from their support assist software. Basically, I hate distractions in my workflow and anything like the above-mentioned items that could be eliminated I will hold a laptop maker accountable for. The speakers also, while decent, do distort quite a bit at max volume. This is an issue I feel could have been eliminated with more R&D, but is forgivable given that many users will just use headphones anyways.
Altogether, aside from the quirk with the first-time coil-whine noise on the CrystalDiskMark test, I have found good success with this laptop. It has definitely found its way into my daily workflow and is a nice upgrade to my previous daily driver windows laptop I used previously. Thanks for reading and hope this review helped you!

The next generation of USB recording mics is here!
on March 3, 2021
Posted by: Bren
from Central Point, OR
This microphone has no business delivering the incredible quality of audio that it does at this price point. It has definitely blown away myself and the other guys I game and record with.
One of the first things I noticed is how, even without a pop filter, this microphone seems to attenuate plosives. I have a lisp and am definitely heavy on my plosives when I record, and this thing is really doing a spectacular job of cutting those out of the recordings and chat streams.
The inclusion of a USB-C and USB-A cable with which to connect this mike is thoughtful. I have been using this mic set up with both my XPS 13 with its USB-C port and with my gaming PC set up that has a swath of USB-A ports but just one USB-C port that is occupied by my portable SSD.
If you are looking for a USB recording mic for gaming, audio recording, streaming, podcasts, etc., this microphone is demonstrative of what I think is the next generation of enthusiast grade home recording microphones!

Great blender if you are lazy!
on March 3, 2021
Posted by: Bren
from Central Point, OR
This blender has been an awesome addition to my kitchen implements.
The Auto-IQ feature is awesome, I am using it far more than I thought I would. I thought it was going to be kind of a gimmicky feature that I would end up trying once and then forgetting about. It turns out, I am using it almost every time I use the blender. The way it works is you select the appropriate auto-IQ setting, like ice crush or smoothie, and it will run through a program of pulsing the blades on and off at the appropriate speeds and then stops the blender at the end of the program. This means that you can load up your ingredients, attach the appropriate blender cup or pitcher, set the program and forget about it until it is done. I like to make smoothies in the morning before I go to work sometimes and it is nice to be able to let the blender do its thing while I go about other tasks to get ready for work. It really helps me to have a lazy, slow start to my mornings without panicking over having to multi-task.

Speaking of being lazy, you can buy additional 24oz to-go blending cups for less than 20 dollars if you hate doing dishes like I do. I honestly think I might go ahead and buy another three cups so I can forgo washing the cups after every use and just toss them at the dishwasher. Did I mention almost all of the implements in this blender set up are dishwasher safe? Awesome.
Altogether, I am absolutely thrilled with this blender. If you are like me and are just looking to make smoothies, margaritas, or make some vegetable purees once in a while, then this kit from Ninja is for you. If your desire is to mix doughs or do other tasks like that with an all-in-one blender, than you may want to look at some of the other offerings in this same series from Ninja that include those implements. Thanks for reading my review!

Do you experience slow internet speeds, dropped calls, and the inability to send and receive texts while you’re on the road? With the weBoost Drive Reach OTR, you can improve your cell signal, wherever work (or play) takes you. Designed to enhance signal coverage for trucks and OTRs, especially in remote areas. The weBoost Drive Reach OTR uses the latest technology to pick up an existing cell signal, route it the booster, then broadcast that amplified signal into your truck’s cab. To install the Drive Reach OTR, first select where to mount the outside antenna. This is the most important step as it determines the performance of your booster. Check that the antenna is at least 12 inches from all other antennas and openings to avoid interference. The antenna can be secured using the included 3-way mount on a rack or mirror arm. Use the modular mast extensions to ensure the right height for your antenna, from 7.5 to 40 inches. Once the outside antenna is installed, run the coax cable behind the weather stripping of an opening into your cab. Next, mount the inside antenna by using the adhesive strips to attach it to the dash or a seat. We recommend keeping the inside antenna at least 12 inches away from where you’ll most often use your phone. Then run the coax cable to the booster. Plugin both the outside and inside cables. Now, plug in the power cord to the booster. Finally, plug the power adapter into your vehicle’s power supply and turn on the booster. When the green light is on, it’s working. All coax cable needed for installation is provided. Stay connected, wherever work or play takes you, with the weBoost Drive Reach OTR Cellular Signal Booster!

American made quality!
on February 11, 2021
Posted by: Bren
from Central Point, OR
TL;DR review: The weBoost Drive OTR is an expensive, effective (within its limits/constraints), USA made, booster that could bring you peace of mind to have. It is the most powerful consumer grade vehicle cellphone booster available from weBoost. It has excellent build quality and includes most all of what users will need for install aside from vehicle specific brackets, adapters, etc. It does appear in my limited experience thus far to be yielding improvements to my cell reception and data usage in remote areas.
Long review:
The weBoost Drive OTR is a high-quality built system that, likely in response to user reviews on the previous model, includes most all accessories one could need to effectively mount this device. On the previous discontinued model of this cellphone booster, many of the accessories included here had to be purchased separately. This model is best mounted to a semi-truck or an appropriately equipped passenger vehicle that has a roof rack, bed rack, or other custom mounting bracket option to be able to mount a half-inch bolt antenna assembly like this securely. This is NOT the SKU you are looking for if you are seeking a magnetic mounted outside antenna included in the package; this assembly will need to be bolted securely in some fashion to your vehicle. With this information in mind covered, here is my experience.
I installed this antenna on my 2015 Toyota Tacoma crew cab SR5 4X4 4.0L V6. I was seeking a device to help me maintain cellular connection while on long road trips and in the outdoors on overland and hunting trips--delivering peace of mind that I would have improved cell reception in the event of an emergency or need to download an offline map on the go. I installed the outside antenna on a special antenna bracket adapter that attaches to my previously installed driver side ditch light bracket made by Cali Raised LED (see my pictures). To mount the outside antenna, I used the spring base, coax cable side-exit adapter, the 13" mast extension, included blue Loctite, and the nuts and washers mixed between the included 3-way mount and the spring base. The total height of my setup from mount to tip of the antenna is 26”. All of the listed accessories and more were included in this package. I felt this combination with the spring base was best as I wanted to ensure this antenna would clear my roof top for maximum reception, not be too tall, while having some give and flexibility to bend in a safe part of the assembly when it gets hit and pushed around by low branches etc. I don't have much concern about this happening as the antenna has an IP66 and MIL-STD-810 rating for weatherproof and impact performance, but it is important to do what you can to help prevent unneeded stresses to the antenna assembly as there could be other stress points in your mounting setup that could become an issue if they sustain repetitive or excessive forces. The spring base helps to absorb and dissipate the normal vibrations and movement caused by the road and wind while driving. I routed the outside antenna coax cable next to my hood hinge into my engine compartment and pulled the cable through my firewall into my engine compartment--zip-tying and tucking away the excess neatly in the engine compartment as this cable is LONG at 16ft.
I installed the Drive Reach OTR cellular amplifier under my seat using the included sticky-backed Velcro strip. This securely mounted the snap-on base of the module under my seat to the carpet without any sliding or other issues so far. The inside antenna I mounted on the driver side center console using the double-sided adhesive strip; adhering to the instructions of ideal distance from where your phone(s) will be used in the vehicle and keeping plenty of distance from the outside antenna to prevent oscillation of the signals. The cigarette plug 12V DC power adapter was plugged into my 12V DC outlet and I also routed that cable underneath the center console trim to keep it neat and tidy. With some careful cable management and neat tucking away of all of the cables, I managed a clean install and got the "green light" on the module, indicating that it is working per the manufacturer.
Now, the big reveal, how is it working? Well, that is where it this review gets difficult for me. It appears to be helping somewhat with increasing my phone call quality and reception while I am out in the woods away from civilization, but it is not producing the staggering night and day differences in data speed etc. I had, admittedly ignorantly, hoped for.
To test it, I placed a call to a family member while I was out in area with poor reception with this module turned on and with it turned off to compare the quality. The person I called stated that they heard a difference in my voice call with less static and popping noises when I was using the weBoost. In trying to gather objective data, I downloaded the Speed Test app to my iPhone App to see if there was a difference in the download and upload mbps speed with this device. My results were inconclusive as it seemed like my results were the same whether I had it turned on or not. When I drove out into the woods and lost all but a bar or two on extended network collection, I was unable to initiate the speed test whether I had the weBoost turned on or not. Keep in mind, I have followed all manufacturer instructions for install and I ensure the device had the solid green light on indicating that it was working. WeBoost advises that bars on your phones screen are not the preferred method for effectively measuring the performance of this device. Some reviewers have stated that they noticed increased bars with the use of this device, I did not notice this myself.
One situation in which I really recognized an improvement with this device was utilizing the hotspot on my iPhone 8 to browse the internet on my Macbook Pro while at my grandpa’s house. He lives in area that gives spotty cell reception at best; one of those places you walk around the house trying to get a good signal so you can make a call. When I brought my laptop over to help him research some building supplies, I utilized the weBoost in my truck. It really was about a noticeable difference in the load time of web pages and the snappiness of the interactions with the pages I was on.
One other topic I wanted to address was making sure to register this with your wireless network provider. I followed the instructions in the included installation guide booklet (pages 13 and 14) to register my booster with Verizon. The information needed, including the FCC ID for the device was on page 16 of the booklet; you also want to be sure to have your serial number on hand for the device. The process took me less than 5 minutes and keeps in compliance with the usage of such a device.
Overall, this is an expensive, occasionally but not entirely effective, piece of hardware that could bring you peace of mind in remote regions. I see the decision of this purchase being relative to how much you operate in remote areas or on long stretches of highway across large regions away from good cell tower reception. For once a season trip-takers, I feel like this wouldn't yield a good cost/benefit ratio. For truck drivers or overlanders who are on the road all the time traversing through all sorts of remote or poorly connected areas, I think that the potential benefits this Drive Reach OTR booster has to increase connectivity and reception would be worth it.
Thanks for reading my review! I hope it helps give another picture of what this package weBoost is offering is like!

Perfect Small Business/Home Office Scanner Tool!
on February 7, 2021
Posted by: Bren
from Central Point, OR
This little scanner is excellent. The scans are clean and it does both color and black and white. It sometimes needs help feeding long receipts through or they will jam, but nothing a little guiding with your hand can't help. I love the Epson ScanSmart Software. It allows you to sequentially scan multiple scans, review them, and then export them or download them separately or all at once to your given folder or business management software like QuickBooks. When scanned to the invoice/receipt manager software from Epson, it can actually auto detect vendors like USPS for easier classification and tax management. It is only about 11 inches long and is super light, taking up hardly any footprint at all on your desk or table. Just note that this RR-60 is the wired version, the RR-70 is what you want for wireless scans. Thanks for reading, I definitely would get this if this is the kind of scanner you are looking for!

Versatile Toaster Oven with some quirks
on February 2, 2021
Posted by: Bren
from Central Point, OR
Pros:
-Aesthetically pleasing
-Easy to use
-Preheats quickly
-It fits about 4-6 pieces of toast at a time.
-It does not heat up the entire house like the use of the oven
-Successfully made grilled cheese, pizza, grilled sandwiches, muffins, baked veggies like brussel sprouts and broccoli (wish it would have been able to get them crispier), potatoes, chicken wings
Things to be aware of:
-Takes up quite a bit of counter space
-It gets really hot on the outside. You have to be careful when you open the handle because both my daughter and I burned our fingers (outside frame of the door is really close and doesn’t have a guard of any sort- it’s just hot metal!
-Basic functions like toasting- you have to do the setting twice to what a basic toaster will do, and that is it cooking on the highest setting.
-Instructions could have been a little more thorough, but once you mess around with the settings you get the hang of the digital board pretty quickly
Overall, we feel it is decent enough for what it is but there are cooking implements out there that can do a lot more nowadays such as have an air fryer function etc.

Small size, massive performance!
on January 21, 2021

from Central Point, OR
This is the most useful scanner I have ever owned. Prior to this scanner, I was using an Epson all-in-one printer that had a flatbed and automatic document feeder (ADF) scanner function that can only scan documents one side at a time. Suffice it to say, the ADF on my all-in-on printer really behaves more like an “automatically doesn’t function” scanner.
This awesome little scanner is a breath of fresh air for me. The setup was easy, albeit requiring the use of a USB-A to USB-B cable that they supplied. If you are going to try to set this up with a computer that only has USB-C ports, make sure you have a USB-A to USB-C adapter for ease of use and set up. (I have not yet figured out if this particular model connects via WIFI, I suspect not). I plugged this in as the directions showed and downloaded the Epson SmartScan software onto my Apple Macbook Pro running the most recent update of Big Sur. Normally, and with my other Epson printer included, I do not like proprietary printer software. However, this SmartScan software is just too great. Before you scan your document, you can choose whether you are going to scan a single side document or a double side document. After that selection, this thing just TAKES OFF and scans all of the pages faster than I could have imagined. I actually got startled when I first started the scanning process and the first page just rocketed through this scanner like the Tasmanian devil on crack. The next part of the scanning process on the software allows you to review the orientation, order, and quality of each scan in an easy to view process, allowing you to make adjustments as needed before saving. Then with the saving process, you have the ability to save directly to the computer, print and then save (printing occurring on a connected printer of course) Google Drive, to an email, to Microsoft Word and Excel, and more. I wasn’t sure, but I would have liked to see direct support for Microsoft Onedrive. However, I worked around this by setting up to save to a folder within my Onedrive folder on my Macbook Pro.
With further use, something I wanted to note that I think is awesome is that it automatically detects if it is scanning a double-sided document or not! Not preselection required, just load the documents as instructed and press the scan button and it will take over from there! Love that. Another thing I found is that, by loading my driver’s license long way in (vertical) it scans it with ease. I just had to squeeze in the guides and make sure it was aligned properly. I found that it was inconsistent with other cards though, no matter how I aligned them. I would really consider this to be best accomplished at normal sized paper documents and that a flatbed would probably be best for cards etc. if you are seeking consistency.
Overall, for a home office, working from home, or small business setting, I can’t imagine a better scanner. Its compact size places no great demands on space and its quality of scans and efficiency in scanning yield results that anyone can appreciate. This definitely has found its place in my set up! With tax season arriving, I am going to be pleased to have this scanner to help me get all my documents prepared and scanned in!

This air purifier really makes a difference!
on January 15, 2021

From the cooking of subjectively smelly foods to relief from pet allergies, this air purifier is really changing our lives in our home!
I love to eat fish, the really smelly ones when you cook them. My girlfriend on the other hand cannot stand the smell and gags when she smells them. This air filter to both of our assessments has been really incredible in cutting down on food odor. I have an open concept condo where the living room, dining room, and kitchen are all connected with no intervening walls or separations. I would say it is probably about 500 sq. feet or so of open air all circulating together. I have the incredible machine set up in the living room and it quietly and efficiently deals with the smells. I will food prep in the morning on a day off with this air purifier turned on and by the time my girlfriend gets home in the afternoon, she cannot smell the fish I have cooked!
Another aspect this is really helping with is cats. I love cats, so so much. But oh my gosh, they make my eyes turn redder than a tomato at peak redness. I already have been employing the use of a pet allergy/HEPA filter vacuum, but with this air purifier my residual day to day allergy flare ups have all but disappeared!
I have enjoyed connecting this to my phone to see the metrics for filtration and purity of the air. It is fascinating to see the variances day to day in the measurements. I am going to be curious when spring hits what the purifier detects and how it holds up to my areas ridiculous pollen count.
All in all, I would really take a large air purifier like this into consideration if you have a large, ongoing space to filter that falls at or under this machine’s rated 698 sq. feet of purification.

For my limited uses, this is an excellent camera!

As so many of us have faced in 2020, I am having to attend A LOT of online conferences, meetings, and seminars for my work. For some of my work, I have to display charts in the background next to me as I discuss and perform my presentations. A few of my colleagues had informed me that with my previous camera I was using, it was highly pixilated and difficult to make out what I was presenting. I wanted to go overkill for my scenario to help future proof my media presentations and therefore I was happy to get this camera.
I am not using this alongside gaming or on YouTube, just for Zoom and Microsoft Teams mostly. The image that I my colleagues are reporting now is as crisp and smooth as I had hoped with the 4K video! I can even tell that my image is one of the best projected on zoom when I compare my video image with that of others!
For my uses now, I think this is a great camera!

A great vacuum if pet or human hair is an issue!

This vacuum sucks--and that is meant as a complement! Truly, this vacuum has changed the manner in which I go about my cleaning routine in my home.
First of all, I have found that it really does just seem to clean my carpet more thoroughly than my previous vacuum this is replacing. To test this, I used my previous vacuum over a section of my plush living room carpet and then followed up by using my new Bissell CleanView vacuum. To my delight, I actual had additional dirt and hair in the vacuum canister that I know that my previous vacuum wouldn't have gotten to. On the handle, the vacuum has an adjustment for bare carpet to plush carpet to modify how much suction the vacuum is employing. This seemed to assist in applying the right amount of suction to the different sections of flooring I vacuum, thus cleaning more thoroughly.
I am absolutely in love with how this beast handles hair. It is not pet hair that actually convinced me to want to go with this vacuum, but my girlfriend's hair. She has long, curly hair and sheds like a husky. On my previous vacuum cutting all of the hair off the vacuum brush turned into a monthly chore. With this CleanView vacuum, it just all piles neatly into the canister and dumps easily into the trash when emptying the canister.
I am really enjoying the lift off feature of the vacuum canister. It is really nice to leave behind the heavy, cumbersome vacuum head and walk around my furniture and drapes with only the handle and the vacuum canister. Talk about convenient!
As a word of caution, I will say that while this vacuum is powerful, it is not as nimble or as easy to maneuver as some vacuums. It has difficulty turning sharply and corning in tight spaces. The vacuum is small enough to fit under low objects like beds and between tight spaces, just not easy to control once you are there. I would say if someone has wrist or shoulder issues, they should probably avoid this vacuum altogether as it does require a rather firm hand to maneuver.
Speaking to the allergen reduction abilities of this vacuum, in some research that I did, it does appear that this vacuum employs appropriate micron-size filters to handle the majority of allergens that pile up on carpets and surfaces from pets and plants alike. If you or a loved one in the home suffer from allergies, this would be an excellent choice to investigate.
Overall, I am highly pleased with my new vacuum. While it may not be as nimble or as light as some, it does such an excellent job cleaning and is so convenient with the lift off feature that I feel it will remain a great choice for most!

What is the RPM of the 1 terabyte hard drive?

7200rpm, much better than the 5400rpm hard drive found in my $1600.00 MSI Stealth Pro :(
