A Quality Pair of Headphones
on November 9, 2023
Posted by: DonMc
This is my second pair of Sennheiser Headphones. My other pair are on the high end, so I had to temper my expectations for these middle of the road ACCENTUM Wireless headphones. I’ll admit it, these headphones hold their own against their more expensive cousins.
The first thing I test when I get a new set of headphones in the bass response. I have a few music tracks I use that really put sound equipment through its paces. Low quality speakers or headphones usually can’t handle deep bass at high volume; the distortion can be teeth grinding. These ACCENTUM headphones handled the bass about as well as any quality pair of headphones. While I wasn’t blown away, I was adequately impressed. The bass response was pretty clean, I didn’t notice any distortion.
What really caught my attention was the quality of the high and midrange reproduction. Vocals were crystal clear; the light percussion was as crisp as a late fall New England morning . These headphones did a fantastic job of separating each instrument and vocal to allow you to really enjoy your music. Jazz listeners are in for a treat.
The ACCENTUM headphones offer a large, around the ear, cuff. They sound much better, and are more comfortable than over the ear, cuffs. The around the ear feature is far more comfortable long term, and offers better sound and noise cancelling. Speaking of which, When I first got the headphones up and running, I could clearly hear the television, as well as conversations and other ambient noise interspersed with music. When I turned on the Adaptive Noise Cancelation, it seemed like the TV instantly went on mute. I legit thought someone was messing with me because all I heard was music, nothing else.
The one thing I do not like about these headphones was the lack of a headphone jack. I wear headphones when I play my guitar, and I use a device that plugs into my electric guitar’s speaker jack and allows me to listen to my guitar through a set wired of headphones. My family and neighbors also enjoy that function. Unfortunately, I can’t use these headphones to play my guitar. If I had actually paid for these, I might have been tempted to return them and purchase another pair based on that alone. Luckily, I have my old pair of phones I can still use, but I’d rather use these new ones.
These headphones are a little snug, but I like that. They aren’t uncomfortable at all, and the tight fit helps keep music in and unwanted noise out.
Even with the lack of the headphone jack, I still like these ACCENTUM Wireless headphones. They offer impressive sound and a comfortable fit. Given the price point, a carrying case would have been nice. I used the Sennheiser Smart Control app, and I give it a rousing, meh… If you never use this app, you won’t be missing much.
Overall, the pluses far outweigh the one negative, I highly recommend these headphone based on sound quality, comfort and noise cancellation.
POSTIVES:
Excellent Noise Cancellation
Very clear sound reproduction and quality
Around the Ear comfort
No sound bleeding
You can use the headphones while they charge
LESS POSITVE:
No headphone jack (when Sennheiser says wireless, they mean it!)
The app is pretty useless

The Dark Web is Not Your Friend
on September 12, 2023
Posted by: DonMc
I watched 60 Minutes a few years ago, and the head of FBI Cybersecurity was asked, “What are the chances that [a foreign country] has my social security number?” The FBI agent answered, “There’s a 110% chance that [a foreign country] has your social security number!”
If that doesn’t motivate you to take some necessary steps towards protecting yourself, nothing will.
One of the credit monitoring companies offers identity protection that’s really good, but it’s $25 dollars per month. Enter McAfee Privacy and Identity Guard. This program offers a comprehensive package of programs to protect your identity from Dark Web malefactors.
My personal favorite is Personal Data Cleanup. This program scans 40 high risk data broker sites for your personal data. If your information is found on these sites you can either contact them, or have McAfee contact them and ask them to remove it. As a retired law enforcement officer, it’s invaluable to have my data scrubbed from those sites. A few sites will not display your address, but the names of family members as well.
ID Monitoring will alert you if your information is found on the Dark Web. It’ll give you a head start towards protecting your credit so you can contact the three credit monitoring agencies.
This is a comprehensive protection package. I lock my credit when I’m not looking to apply for a loan or a new credit card. Protecting your identity is something people should take seriously. This Privacy and Identity Guard from McAfee is a great place to start.

Cool Beverages Within Arm's Reach
on May 26, 2023
Posted by: DonMc
I've always liked my beverages cold, ice cold. A cooler than can maintain a 34º temperature fits the bill. This 48-can Beverage Cooler from Insignia is just perfect for my home office/man-cave. It's large enough to house a significant amount of beverages, yet small enough to take up a minimal amount of space in your living area.
There isn't much to do to set it up. I was up and running in no time at all. Initially, I considered setting it up in my garage, but the manual was pretty clear about not doing that. Once it was unpacked and cleaned, I placed six 16.7 bottles of water inside. Depending on the type of bottle, I was able to stand them up inside of the cooler; other sized bottles had to be stored lying down. Placing several bottles at once inside the cooler takes a longer time for them to cool, even with the Quick Cool feature. The Quick Cool feature runs for 24 hours and cools the contents quickly.
The temperature control functions are clearly visible through the glass door of the cooler. The internal temperature range setting is between 34º to 50º F. I have mine set at 34º. I put a thermometer/humidity gauge inside to monitor the internal temperature of the cooler. The front of the cooler ran between 40-45º and the back of the cooler ran between 32º-36º. Whenever I opened the door, no matter how briefly, the inside temperature soared to 45-50º, and took about 15 minutes for the temperature to cool back down to 34º. Because of that, I wouldn't recommend constantly opening and closing the door or the cooler will be running constantly trying to maintain your desired temperature.
The cooler emits a low humming noise whenever the chiller are running. But it's fairly quiet for the most part.
For me, this cooler is a nice appliance to have. No more running downstairs for cold beverages. It's large enough to store several bottles, even though it was designed for cans. Highly recommended.

A Huge Step Backward
on December 16, 2022
Posted by: DonMc
Let me save you from reading this entire review: Don’t buy this HERO11 Mini!
Spend the extra money and buy the HERO11 Black!
When this camera was announced, my first thoughts were, what market are they going for? Where are the camera's viewing screens? The HERO10 Black introduced front and rear screens. They were incredibly helpful in determining what the camera sees from the front if you’re being featured, or from the rear if you’re directing. I don’t understand why GoPro would take such a huge step back by removing BOTH screens.
The advanced video resolution, 5.3k at 60fps, is very impressive. Dual mounting rings on the rear and bottom gives you more options for providing different camera angles. The heat sink on the back of the camera is a bonus, because unless it’s mounted, this camera kicks off serious heat, which drastically robs you of battery life.
The image stabilization is crazy! Camera shake is virtually non-existent. I attach my GoPros to my bike's handle bars, and no matter how bumpy the trail, this camera smoothes the video beautifully. So, when you’re watching your footage later, you won't get motion sickness.
GoPro cameras have a ton of remarkable features, and I could go on and on about them. Let me get to why I don’t like this camera:
1.) Installation was a pain (compared to other models). I’m used to using the rear display screen to set up and adjust my camera settings. To go from that, to setting up your camera using only TWO buttons was a pain in the brain! Also, the LED display is only two lines, and each line is approximately 10 characters.
2.) This camera locked up constantly!! The red light would remain lit, and neither of the buttons would do anything to unfreeze it. Finally, I held down the power button for about ten seconds and it eventually responded; until it locked up again! …and then again!
3.) I charged this camera for hours, and when I tried to set it up, it only showed a 50% charge. Which brings me to my next point: The battery is non-removable! When I rode using my other GoPros, I always brought extra batteries so I can make changes mid-ride. Can’t do that with this puppy! When the battery dies, you’re done recording.
This camera is a huge step back for GoPro. Other than its amazing videos capabilities, this feels like a first-gen device. The price point for this camera is way too high.
I have a HERO7 Black and a HERO10 Black, I’ll stick with those, and make the 11 Mini my backup cam.
To reiterate, spend a few more dollars and buy the HERO11 Black. You’ll get a whole lot more bang for your buck.

Home Run, Ninja!
on October 18, 2022
Posted by: DonMc
Honestly, whenever I see any new products from Ninja, my interest is automatically piqued. I own several of their appliances, and I’m happy with all of them. This Foodi Grill from Ninja is no exception. This appliance is an air fryer on steroids. It grills, air crisps, bakes, roasts and dehydrates food, all in one (sort of) compact device.
The first thing I prepared was pork chops. The chops were boned, center cut and one inch thick, so I had to improvise the cooking times as there were no exact examples on the enclosed Cheat Sheet (I understand those cooking times are merely estimates). Per the instructions, I coated them with one of the suggested cooking oils before seasoning them. After the automated pre-heating period (8-10 minutes), I placed my chops on the grill to that welcome sizzling sound, followed by the enticing aroma of my food beginning to cook. The digital display on the front of the grill is easy to read and use.
Halfway through the cooking period, a timer beeped, alerting me to flip my pork chops. Even though they were only half done, they looked amazing!
I must say, even though I adhered to the suggested cooking temperature, there was quite a bit of smoke in my kitchen. Since I used the air fryer on top of my ceramic stove, I turned on my cooking fan above the stove, but there was still a thin layer of smoke throughout the kitchen. I didn’t have this issue with any of my other air fryers.
My chops looked beautiful! The grill marks are a nice touch. After letting the chops sit for a few minutes, I cut one of them open and it was very juicy and tender.
The instructions were very good. They were concise, yet provided all pertinent information. Quick start giudes are always welcome.
Cleanup was very easy; the instructions indicated the interior components are dishwasher safe, but as soon as I ran the grill and cooking pot under hot water, the grease melted right away, so I just hand washed everything. It only took a few minutes of easy labor .
The included recipe booklet is actually useful. Most everything look easy to make, and they looked delicious! There are even recipes for Rubs, Sauces, and Marinades that are easy to make. I added my own flair to their rub, and it was outstanding.
This Foodi Grill is a little larger than I anticipated, and while it’s not enormous, it will consume a good amount of counter/cabinet space.
This device is my new go to cooking appliance. It’s easy to use and it produces well cooked food. It actually justifies its high price point. I’m making pizza in it next!
Highly recommended!

Great program (with a few annoyances)
on July 12, 2022
Posted by: DonMc
This being my first experience with Norton, I was anxious to see what it provided that similar programs did not. I was pleasantly surprised to see it offered a plethera of utilities; some very useful, some, not so much.
The Dark Web Monitoring and Lifelock utilities proved to be very useful. Immediately after installation, it alerted me to a data breach involving one of my online accounts. I immediately changed the password. Thanks Norton!
Norton offers full protection for several of your personal accounts, including: credit cards; bank accounts; driver's license, and a few others. Sorry Norton, but I don't trust ANYONE enough to input so much personal information, no matter how good your reputation.
I also wasn't crazy about paying for a program that implies that you're receiving Ultimate Utilities with the package, but they force you to pay extra for some of those utilities. Anti-track, computer tune-up and other programs are offered a la carte.
I've never been a fan of subscription based software, but it seems like they're here to stay. Norton forces you to agree to automatic annual renewals before you can even install the darn program.
Norton 360 Standard does what it's supposed to do; protect your computer and your information. But for me, the overall cost of this program (in dollars and aggravation) didn't make me love this program. I'll stick with what I already have. While it isn't for me, but it might be up your alley.

Loaded With Nice Features
on December 4, 2021
Posted by: DonMc
from Rochester, NY
I own houses in New York and Florida, and I drive up and down the east coast frequently. So, the chances of getting pulled over for exceeding the speed limit are enhanced. Not that I drive like a madman, but I have been known to go over the limit on occasion. Hopefully, this Radenso DS1 Radar Detector will help me avoid an expensive ticket and higher insurance rates.
Upon opening the box, I was pleased to see a canvased hard case to store the detector in. That will help prevent damage to the device when stored in the glovebox or console. The second thing I noticed was the USB-C port, which allowed me to set up the device right out of the box, inside my house. It’ll also come in handy when I have to upgrade the firmware.
Applying the suction cup on my windshield was easy. Taking it off, not so much. This thing really attaches itself to the window. And I applied mine in cold weather, when suction cups generally don’t adhere to glass very well. There is a magnet that attaches the detector to the mount. Be sure you attach it correctly, if not your detector will fall from the mount and end up in your lap while you’re going 70 MPH. If you attach it correctly, you should be good. If you choose to, you can just leave the mount attached to your windshield all the time, but you could be providing probable cause for a thief to break into your car.
The display on the detector offers a clock that is easy to read. In the upper left corner, you’ll see your current speed and compass direction you’re traveling. There is a mute button on the front of the detector. The cable also has a mute button as well as an extra USB port (Very convenient!).
I love the GPS lockout feature! My regular commute takes me past a large grocery store. My old detector would start squawking without fail. This detector has a GPS Lockout feature. It remembers the location of regular false alerts and after a few passes, will lock them out.
If you’ve ever driven along the eastern seaboard, you’re keenly aware that radar detectors are illegal in the State of Virginia. I’ve always had to turn off my detector when driving through that state. This detector professes to be undetectable to radar guns. I have no idea how accurate that is, I’ve heard the police can detect your undetectable detector, if you’re driving at a slower speed (like on certain country roads). Personally, I’m not going to roll the dice on this one, and plan on turning off my detector when traveling through Virginia. If you get away with it, please let me know.
I’ve owned several radar detectors in my life, some good, some worthless. This seems to be the real deal. Although it still picks up the signals from cars using lane assist, I don’t get as many as I used to. The Radenso DS1 is a nice unit with several nice features. If you travel on highways often, it could save you from a day-ruining ticket.
Highly recommended.

Can't Use Most of Your Current Software...
on October 21, 2021
Posted by: DonMc
from Rochester, NY
I was really excited about receiving this new Microsoft Surface Go 3 with Windows 11. Getting a new operating system is normally exciting for me. A new OS presents new challenges, and the fun of checking out all of the new features, and hoping that my favorite features haven't been removed.
At this point, I'm not loving this latest Windows iteration.
The first thing I do when I get a new computer is load my favorite programs, and hope that they're compatible with the latest software version. However, trying to load your usual Windows programs may be a bit of a hassle, because Windows 11 has what's called S Mode. S Mode is a version of Windows that offers enhanced security and performance. In S Mode, Windows will only run apps acquired from the Microsoft Store. If you want to run your usual programs you’ll have to exit the S Mode, (and lose your security protection). If you so choose to opt out of S mode, you can’t go back to it, You'll be stuck with the standard version of Windows 11. But at least you won’t be subjected to having to get your apps exclusively from the Microsoft Store.
Since I have several programs I regularly use that aren’t currently available in the Microsoft Store, I’ll probably opt out the S mode. Want to use your current virus protection? All of the popular antivirus software programs aren’t compatible with Windows 11 in S mode. The only antivirus available in S Mode is Windows Defender. You’re also stuck with Microsoft Edge as a web browser; in fact, if you try to download a different browser, you’re greeted with a message, recommending you keep using Edge (then it won't allow you install it).
The tablet's overall performance is just okay. At least the battery life seems to be impressive. I purchased the attachable keyboard designed for this tablet, it makes a big difference.
Microsoft seems to have instituted a closed shop with regard to Windows 11. Since I really like my usual apps, I'll be opting out of S Mode, since none of the apps in the Microsoft Store appeal to me as a worthy substitute.

State of the Art Camera
on September 23, 2021
Posted by: DonMc
from Rochester, NY
This is the second GoPro I’ve owned. My first GoPro was the 7 Black, and it continues to be amazing. But when I got the opportunity to obtain the latest iteration, the GoPro 10, there was no way could I say no.
The improvements in the GP10 are impressive. The 23 megapixel camera captures crisp photos, the 5.3k videos at 60fps is simply breathtaking (especially in slo-mo). Front and rear touch cameras are great for vlogging. To go over even half of the features of this camera would make this review as long as a novella, So I’ll stick to the points that are important to me.
The front facing camera allows you to take away the guesswork of how your shot is framed, because you can see it live. With 5.3k video, I do my best to avoid getting too close to the camera. No need for everyone to see my every imperfection. But for nature or slo-motion shots, the quality is unreal.
Easily, the most important feature for me is the image stabilization. Even though this isn’t my first GoPro, I continue to be amazed at how smooth the video plays. My primary use for the GoPro 10 is recording my bike rides, I attach my camera to my handlebars. My bike route has several areas where the path is crazy bumpy with tree roots and potholes. It boggles my mind how the recorded video shows ZERO incidents of rough rides. My brain rattles as I go over the rougher parts of my road, but the video doesn’t agree with my brain’s assessment of the rough terrain. The video stabilization is state of the art. Simply amazing…
Opening the latch to access the battery and microSD is a bit of a pain. Until you master the technique to open he panel, you are going to break some fingernails. I get it, the GoPro is supposed to be waterproof (to 33ft), but does it have to be access-proof, too?
My biggest gripe with the 10, is current owners of earlier iterations of GoPros have to buy new batteries and a new charger. The batteries in my 7 Black are worthless in the 10 (not sure about the 8 or 9 versions). Also, I’m not happy about the terrible instructions. New owners will be a bit confused, previous owners already know the runnings, so that won’t be too much of an issue.
Having said all of that, the GoPro 10 is a mini-marvel. The price point is no joke $$$, but it’s a rugged and versatile piece hardware that provides a plethora of uses. Highly, highly recommended!

Unique Appliance
on August 23, 2021
Posted by: DonMc
from Rochester, NY
The very concept of an appliance that stream cleans floors and vacuums was intriguing. I had to have one.
Assembly was simple enough: snap on the floor nozzle and attach the handle with a screw (they even supplied the screwdriver).
After filling the water tank with distilled water (highly recommended), I pressed the appropriate steam button, and waited…and waited. Nothing. I removed the water tank and the filter to make sure water was getting through to the steam motor. The water from the tank trickled through the filter, and the filter trickled water through to the steam motor. Every time I pressed the steam release button, nothing would happen, the device would give three short vibrations, but no steam. After 15-20 minutes, it showed signs of life; I got steam. I started with my bathroom floor, so I set the mop to Max Steam. It did a good job, I guess. The floor was wet, but there’s no way of telling that it was killing 99% of germs/bacteria. After going over an area on the floor, it felt cool to the touch.
After the bathroom, I went downstairs to mop the laminate flooring. Per the manual, I set the mop to Eco Steam. After mopping the kitchen, dining room and living room, the floors looked nice. I didn’t notice any streaks on the areas I had gone over. Again, there’s no way of being sure about the germ killing. I make a big deal about the germ killing because I have a grandson who crawls all over the place, and I want my floors to be safe for him.
I do not like the shape of the floor nozzle has an odd 5 sided shape that doesn’t allow you to get into corners. Also, I wish the head would swivel to allow me to get into tight spaces. I don’t know what’s going on with the Carpet Attachment, which is a misnomer, because it doesn’t attach to anything. Basically, it’s a piece of plastic that you place on the cleaning pad in order to vacuum. Because it doesn’t attach to the Floor Nozzle, whenever you lift the vacuum cleaner, the thing just falls off, that’s not aggravating at all when you’re vacuuming the stairs (yes it is!).
Pros:
Convenient tool for both mopping and vacuuming
Water lasts a long time (I did four rooms on one tank of water)
Mop head was easy to clean
Cons:
Takes a while to begin producing steam
Weirdly shaped floor nozzle
Carpet Attachment is a pain
Would have liked to have a floor nozzle that swivels
