I needed to upgrade an internal desktop drive, in a computer that has room for only one internal drive. To clone the contents of the old drive to the he's drive, I needed to be able to connect the old drive to the computer as an external USB drive. All I needed to do was plug it into this enclosure, connect the USB cable from the enclosure to the computer, connect the power brick, and turn it in...the old drive mounted ANC I was able to use a disk cloning program to copy it to the internal drive. Good price, pretty solid construction, and it's both PC and Mac compatible. Good purchase.

Plug it in...it works

This drive is both Mac and PC compatible. Older versions of Windows may need to install the driver from the included CD. On Macs, it's plug-and-play...nothing to install. Like most drives, it's factory formatted as a Fat-32 drive using the Master Boot Record partition map. That allows it to work with Macs and PCs right out of the box, but isn't the most reliable kind of format for either. Mac users should reformat the drive using a Disk Utility as a Mac OS (Journaled) drive using the GUID partition map, and Windows users should use Windows Device Manager to reformat the drive as ann NTFS drive. I've used this drive with Macs and PCs, reformatted it as necessary, and have had no problem with it.

What's great about it: Lots of storage space, great price, and it just works
What's not so great: Slightly slower than some competing brands to mount once plugged in.
I would recommend this to a friend!

how to open

How do I get a start up guide? I either didn't get one or have lost it.
I can open it from "my computer", but when I try to open the Microsoft Word file I get a dialog box:
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
I was able to get a Word document off of it about 2 wks ago, but I must not remember how I did it.
Thanks, Paul

Is there a way to get the hard drive to go into power saving (sleep) mode?

I've noticed that once my computer goes into "Sleep" mode, that the hard drive inside the Dynex enclosure won't do the same. Does this enclosure not support power saving (sleep) mode? Will it in the future?
Frankly, I prefer never to have my hard drive go to sleep. Just as in an auto, where going from 0 to 60MPH to enter a highway causes a lot more wear and tear on the engine and uses a lot more gasoline than keeping the car moving at a steady 60MPH (think about how much more you press the gas pedal when accelerating than when just maintain speed), every time your drive sleeps, its disk comes to a complete halt. Every time it wakes, it must very quickly spin up from 0 RPM to 5400 or 7200RPM…which uses much more electricity than just keeping it spinning at its normal speed, and puts much more stress on the drive motor that spins the disk.

The concept of drive sleep was originally conceived when older drives used much more power than they do now. Sleeping a disk saves you extremely little in energy costs, but costs you much more when you have to replace the drive prematurely. Let the drive spin all the time. It will last longer, and even though you might pay a few cents more for electricity over the drive's lifetime, you'll actually save you money in the long run.

Not Accessiable

When I try to open the the drive I get

I;\ is not accessible

Access is denied
This had nothing to do with the enclosure, but had to do with the drive you installed into the enclosure. Without knowing more about what operating system was on the computer where you got the "access denied " message, I'm guessing that the access permissions set for that drive didn't permit access by the account you were logged into on that computer. Most of the time, if your logged into an administrative account, you can change the access permissions of the drive to give your user account access privileges.

Power saving mode not working

My hard drive normally goes into sleep mode after no activity for about 15 minutes. However, with this enclosure it runs continuously. Also, when I first connected it to a WinXP machine, it was not recognized until I used a MacBook to format the disk.
Actually I prefer that my drives never sleep. Just as accelerating a car from 0 to 60MPH creates more wear and tear on the engine than keeping the car running at a steady 60MPH, sleeping a hard drive causes its disk to stop spinning completely, and when it wakes it has to quickly spin up to 5400 or 7200RPM. That causes much more wear and tear on the drive motor than just letting the drive spin. And today's hard drives are so energy efficient that replacing the drive prematurely because of sleep will cost you far more than the tiny saving you'll achieve by sleeping the drive.

The fact that your drive wasn't recognized when you first plugged it into a Windows XP computer wasn't related to this box, but rather to the fact that Windows XP recognizes drives formatted using the Fat-32 or NTFS partition maps…unformatted drives, or drives formatted with the Apple File System or GUID partition maps aren't recognized until their reformatted.

Hope that helps.
