Gone Girl took the world by storm. And I'm not just talking about the film. The book (I highly recommend this read) by Gillian Flynn quickly became one of the bestselling novels of 2012. Through word of mouth, people left and right were finding out about this tale of a dark and twisted marriage. It was seen almost everywhere, so I was no surprise that the rights would be snatched up (by Reese Witherspoon, nonetheless). And the stage was quickly set for David Fincher to work his dark directing magic.
The story tells of a married couple, Nick and Amy Dunne, on their fifth wedding anniversary. That morning, Amy mysteriously vanishes, leaving behind a rather suspicious trail of evidence.The authorities and the media quickly swoop down on Nick, who seems nice enough, but is oddly evasive and may not be telling the whole truth. As events unfold, you will be left wondering how well you truly know the person you love.
With jaw-dropping performances from Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, Neil Patrick Harris, and Patrick Fugit, you will be in for a treat. These actors portray their respective roles with such power and perfection, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think you will be as well. I expect to see award nominations for these players within the coming weeks. If not, I will riot.
Not only is the acting fantastic, but the score paints a beautiful picture as well. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (who scored Fincher's last two films--The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) have returned to deliver an astounding and haunting score that perfectly suits the story. Equally peaceful and disturbing, it mirrors the characters' behaviours as their secrets are unveiled.
Gone Girl is the complete package. Creepy, witty, breathtaking, you will finish this movie with your jaw open. I guarantee it. Truly beautiful, Fincher has outdone himself. I recommend purchasing this at your earliest opportunity.

I purchased this about 4 months ago, and I have to say, it has changed my life! I have two large dogs and allergies. Though my dogs don't shed much, they still have dander and they used to send me into middle of the night asthmatic fits. I wasn't sleeping a full night through without a double dose of allergy medicine and an inhaler (and even then it was iffy)...Until I got the GermGuardian. Upon first use there was a little of that "new plastic smell," but it went away after about 36 hours of continuously running it. The first night I used it, I took my allergy medicine, but did not have to use the inhaler. Did not wake up once! The second week after using it, I noticed that there was less dust in our bedroom, and I had been able to take my allergy medicine less and less (now maybe once a week if that). In fact, I haven't touched my inhaler in over two months!
I am going to buy a second (larger unit) for our upstairs living area. I take the smaller one upstairs while I'm cooking if I am making something that is really smelly (like fried fish or bacon) and run it while I cook. It really helps to minimize the amount of lingering odors. It would be nice to not have to move it around all the time!
The best part though...In this yucky cold and flu season, I am pretty sure the GermGuardian kept me from getting full-blown sick! I started to feel a sore throat and stuffy, but it never broke out into a full cold.
I have recommended this item to four people who ordered it, and all of them said that they are noticing a huge difference in the air quality in their home.
***ONE THING TO NOTE*** You have to rinse the thinner filter off about every two weeks (and be careful, it can tear easily). I don't recommend vacuuming it (I tore it up, and it didn't seem to get all the crud out). I usually just rinse it out in the tub with cool water and let it air dry for about 5-10 minutes. It will help prolong the Hepa filter in it.

Dignity...that is the theme that kept me thinking throughout the film. The dignity of the main actress and she tries to struggle with her feelings for her family as she leaves for new shores in America. The dignity of the two men who are dating her - and they are searching for love - not just a good time with a girl. The dignity of work and of her efforts at accounting school. The dignity of her sister who let her younger sibling make the jump to a new land rather than herself. The dignity of the Irish workers - now unemployed - who gather together at Christmas and revisit their feelings for their old homeland. The dignity of the priest who helps the young woman.

a fathers quest to earn respect

This is one of Mel Gibson's best pictures. Despite Hollywood and its petty hypocritical judgment of him, Mel is still one of the best actors of this or any other age. I'm so glad Blood Father was offered to stream. I feel privileged when I get to see work of this caliber. Oh, sorry. I got a bit carried away. Here's my take on why you should watch this movie. There's anger and resentment seething just beneath the skin of Mel's character at the loss of not only years with his child, but most of his life either behind bars or prisoner of the bottle. Then his long lost daughter is delivered up to him due to fate and circumstance. One thing's for sure. In what comes next he more than makes up for time lost, proving his undying love for his child. See this movie. At it's end remember this single statement. It's not real love unless you're prepared to die for it.

Sully", the movie produced and directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, is the story of 208 seconds of a man's life. It's also the story of 208 seconds of 154 other souls' lives. The movie is not a long one - 97 minutes - but Eastwood has put together a masterful show of how one man's instincts and judgement can come together at one crucial moment to perform what amounted to a "miracle". Of course, Captain Chesley Sullenberger was helped by his co-pilot and crew, and the rescue operations of the NYPD and maritime units.
Tom Hanks is an actor who seems able to possess another man's body and personality. Other reviewers point out his roles in "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia" - among others - but I think his acting of Congressman Charlie Wilson - in "Charlie Wilson's War" - was his best "capture" of another man's essence. His performance here in "Sully" might be as good, but I wonder if this movie will be as overall powerful as "War". Maybe so, I hope so, anyway.
I thought the most important line in "Sully" was made by an official who said that "The Miracle on the Hudson" "was the best news in NYC in years, involving airplanes". Was it by chance this movie was issued the weekend of September 11th?
