Worth the extra cost.

Since the pedestal cost about $200 and change, I'd recommend spending $400 more and get the mini-washer.
It is perfect for small loads (like those few red items) that don't justify a full load. It uses about one tablespoon of liquid detergent, and has enough modes to cover any garment type (e.g. sports or cheer outfits, delicates, light cotton, jeans).
If time is an issue when doing laundry you can basically halve your laundry time with the "sidekick."

Cut down on laundry time with this LG dryer. It handles up to 9 cubic feet of laundry at a time, letting you dry many towels or large bedding loads without breaking them into smaller batches. Wrinkle Care and TrueSteam functions reduce your reliance on ironing, and this LG dryer runs quietly.

The steam sanitizing (washer has it too) is a great feature for linens and bath towels.
First dryer I've used where the drying is complete, yet perm press temperature is low enough that cotton polo shirts and 100% cotton T-shirts don't shrink.
Drying time is quick, most likely do to the high air circulation to facilitate drying with less heat.
Have used it every day (almost all modes) for over a month without an issue.

Handle large laundry loads with this LG front-load washer. Make use of the SenseClean system to automatically set wash cycles based on clothing weight, or select from 12 wash programs to handle a variety of laundry tasks. This LG front-load washer includes an Allergiene cycle to remove common allergens from clothing.

Quiet, efficient, opportunity for improved UX

Have used this washer almost every day for over a month. Great job on turbo wash--short cycle. Very quiet operation. Low water and energy usage (check your electric and water utilities for rebates).
UX: User experience, or what could be improved: 1) control panel should be back lite, reflective surface makes it hard to read without direct illumination; 2) drum light should come on when door is open, magnetic catch or door close could turn light off; 3) having to hand-dry rubber door gasket after every use to prevent mildew shouldn't be a requirement--better design needed or add active self-drying.

Can LG-Sidekick 1.0 Cu. ft. 6-cycle high-efficiency pedestal washer work independently without the large LG washer?
I watched the installation, and it seems possible to run it independently. The sidekick has its own electrical and plumbing, so it doesn't depend on the washer for filling nor draining. One issue to check is the warranty condition: does it require that a waster be on top of it to fulfill the warranty requirements?

Once it is paired with the matching washer can it run independently or do both have to be running at the same time to use it?
It can run independently. We often use it that way. Note that it has its own plumbing and electrical. Make sure your outlet in the laundry room, which is usually a single 30 amp three-prong, is either changed to a double-outlet or you have an adapter that can handle the current if both waster and sidekick are running.

Will this work with other brands of washers ie, sear Kenmore
It is a self-contained unit, with its own plumbing and power cord. It is the same dimensions as the standard LG sheet metal pedestal. Where you could run into an issue is that the other brand does not have the same "engagement" points as the LG. Functionally, it should be an issue--the trick is in the mechanical engagement.

What are the dimensions?
The unit is the same dimensions as the pedestal. It operates as a pull-out drawer with a pop-up lid. If you have enough room to open the washer door above it you'll have enough room for the pull-out. If you are buying the washer, which comes with its own hoses, I'd recommend buying upgraded hoses for the washer and use the washer hoses for the sidekick.
