A friend had sent me a trailer when this was released in the cinemas. I was excited about it - reminded me of Kubrik's THE SHINING. I bought it, came home and watched it right away. There really wasn't anything shocking or surprising. You can see the director wanted to make it similar to THE SHINING which I think he did. The story itself is kind of convoluted and since you can figure it out easily it was average. From the trailer I had hoped for more. Given that, it was still better then some of the big money blockbusters.
The movie wasn't very good. I put off paying a high price for it (Blu) and finally Best Buy had it cheap enough to pick up.
I can't really pinpoint where the film goes bad but it wasn't entertaining. Alexander Skarsgård was good enough in the role but there was nothing that kept me interested. Even for a summer pop corn movie it was lacking.
I like Sam Jackson (I just watched KONG SKULL ISLAND) but between the two of them they could not save the movie. Christoph Waltz's bad guy shtick was exactly the same as other bad guy roles he's famous for. See him in BIG EYES if you want to see him be a bad guy with a whole different style.
When you watch the movie - make sure you watch through until after the credits. There is a reveal which set up the film putting it into a film series.
I did not know this going into the film. I thought the film was OK. Lots of digital effects. The locations used were exotic and worth noticing.
I thought the Peter Jackson film was OK too. Neither film 'rocked' for me. Skull Island is a nice summer blow things up kind of film. If you are into that, which "I am ... it's an OK story with a couple big name actors in it.
The film has sequences which utilized 3D. Sorry to say Best Buy advertised the film available in stores yet they did not stock them in the SF Bay Area. I would loved to have seen it in 3D.
I've seen all the Mavel films. I have got them all in 3D which makes it more of an experience. I'm not a big fan of Iron Man - the Avengers were just OK but for some reason I do like Thor and of course Thor is NOT in this film. Anyway...the story is ok. Nothing exciting. Lots of explosions and destruction. Does anyone else wonder how much destruction people would be willing to put up with? The plot point of the movie. I kind of think of Austin Powers and the 'henchmen'. Who would really sign up for being a henchman? I digress... I liked the addition of Antman (can we get Deadpool into these pictures?). Now we add and a youthful Spiderman (really a third actor to jump start that franchise) who was enjoyable to watch but a bit tiring after a while. My mother said if you don't have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. I gave the movie and average because it was an average movie.
I enjoyed THE CONJURING with it's fact based Warren's leading the story. With the premise of another Warren's story I figured it would be another good ride. I have to say the story was so intriguing I looked it up after I watched the movie. It's got some stupid points (basement filled with water) but overall the story and acting worked well. The blu has extras which allows you to meet the 'girls' which gave it a more true base. The surround was good, the picture quality was good and I know I will watch this again along with the original in the near future.
The fifth installment of the inventive FX original horror anthology series American Horror Story centers around the mysterious Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles and its owner The Countess (Lady Gaga) and a suspected serial killer. American Horror Story: Hotel stars series regulars Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Wes Bentley, and Chloe Sevigny. All twelve episode of the critically acclaimed season are included in this release.
I've been watching AHS since it first aired. I will say it wasn't what I expected (first couple episodes) but I was hooked. Each season got better until Freak Show. When I saw Hotel and Lady Gaga I figured I was done but I gave it a shot. It is the best of all the seasons so far. It has quite a few "nods" from... Interview With A Vampire, The Shining, The Hunger. As I would watch I would look (or listen for) elements of these classic horror movies weaved into the show. The 'hotel' was really classy and was a character as is the Impala is to Supernatural. I will say this is the best of the AHS series so far
This release features the complete first season of the AMC original supernatural drama series Preacher, following a possessed small-town minister (Dominic Cooper) on a relentless mission to find God. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Preacher is adapted for the small screen by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin and co-stars Joseph Gilgun and Ruth Negga.
I tried to watch this on AMC when it originally aired but ended up missing the third episode then hoped it would get a blu release. It did! Even watching AMCHD the picture quality was less then stellar. The Blu is WAY BETTER then broadcast... As for the show. What a crazy ride. Vampire, Vampire hunters, A preacher - a kid with a face that has to be seen to believe, cloning Angels and a space alien which blows preachers up. (My favorite is the Tom Cruise news item. This plays in the background so kind of pay attention). I will say it can be hard to follow, but it is just a fun ride of nonsense which will make you ask yourself who came up with this idea?
I'd seen the commercials and thought this would be a fun ride. It was like watching a video game and so much of it is real (not VFX). I watched it straight through then watched all the extras. I was confused about a character but once you get about half way in the character is explained. I don't want to give anything away as it made it fun. I liked it so much I watched it again the very next day with my 25 year old daughter (a big video game player)
It's ironic that Ryan Renolds is in both movies regarding 'being someone else'. That said I do like Kevin Costner as a bad guy. He did remind me of 3 DAYS TO KILL but as the bad guy vs a good guy. I didn't expect a lot from the movie (even though the commercials made it looked action packed). If you have like Ryan Renolds then see SELF/LESS if you like Kevin Costner as a bad guy then CRIMINAL is a fun movie.
I had seen the trailer for this when I saw HATEFUL EIGHT. The posters were everywhere in the lobby. I love Japanese horror films because many deal with spirits of some kind. When I saw the trailer I thought OK, U.S. remake of a Japanese film. I went home to look it up, nothing stood out as this being a remake. I waited a few months for it to come to blu. I bought it release day and watched it. There was one thing that made me scratch my head. Something was off here. Which was fine it gave the movie weird feel which I could not put my finger on. After a little bit it finally struck me...No bamboo in a Japanese forest! Really? I have seen well over a hundred Japanese films and there is always bamboo in the forests. When the credits roll... you see all the names and I realized it's a 'Serbian' made film which is trying to be Japanese! This was OK, it explained (to me) why it seemed off kilter - which makes it interesting. The story was good, the full use of a haunted forest made sense. I would say more but do not want to say anything which could reveal spoilers. It's not a great movie it's not a bad movie just a middle of the road horror film which was fun to watch.

Is this a 2015 model?
My understand is it is a 2015 model. This is why it was as cheap as it was on both Best Buy and Amazon
