3rd Star To Play Spider-Man

So is the kid any better then any of the other Spider-Men? I don't know. They have all be OK movies. I think Sony shot themselves in the fool over the original 3 where they kept spending so much they couldn't make a buck. Then they revamp it with a new star and I think it kind of went down the same path with the other 2. Now launch the career of a third star to play him. Ok he was fun in THE AVENGERS movie. Now a movie devoted to him. I was curious about the title what is "Homecoming" Duh as in High School.....
I don't know it was OK. I think the funnest part was having Michael Keaton play a kind of Bird Man - oh wait he did that in BIRD MAN which also spun off his BATMAN success. For that reason it was an inside gag that only film geeks might pick up on. Other than that MK was OK in the role. I called out who he was in 'real life' in the picture which really doesn't take a degree to figure out.
If you want a mind numbing Marvel action flick with Iron Man in it every little bit you'll probably enjoy it. I can say it was awful

I loved the original Japanese RINGU. I actually saw it on VCD for those who have been around that long. I wasn't really a big fan of the USA remake or it's sequel - other than when we watched the first USA remake after the video play (I KID YOU NOT!) our phone rang! You can't buy that kind of fun!
I kind of wanted to like it but it's barely average. It's kind of the same story - the same video - still in the Pacific Northwest. But it does have a bit different spin. I would have like to see them really play out the 'tech/science' side of it but it didn't go there instead going to the spooky story and can it all be resolved.
Past that I did like how it ended. It did go back techie which was fun but realistically it was to late to save the movie.

I don't even recall the last Chucky movie. I think it was "Curse..." but that tells you how memorable it was. This movie clearly has some really bad flaws/holes. (Why is the female nurse always there and so skimpily dressed? Oh that's not really a hole but I still asked myself that when I watched it).
I loved the look of the film. It's a lot of black and gray with punches of color here and there. If I had to go for production set design this would get a 6th star.
Without giving anything away (going back to holes) ask yourself 'were did the key card go'? near the end of the movie. It's really fun that the protagonist is actually Brad Dourif daughter. She looks so much like him it's kind of creepy in a cool way.
It's not the original Child's Play but I think it's the best of the sequels even with it's flaws/holes.

Stuck In The Middle With Them

I was looking forward to this film. Heard it was a good horror film. Not so such much. Is it a horror film? Is it an apocalyptic film? Is it a sci-fi film? Not sure on all counts. You are dropped into a family dwelling in an unknown time. Clearly something has happened but you don't know what and in the end you probably won't care. If you are expecting a story with a beginning middle and end... this isn't the movie for you. If you want to know what is happening this isn't the movie for you.
As the story unfolds you are drawn into a family of four which turns into three pretty quickly. That's not a spoiler it happens in the first five minutes. You are supposed to care about these people and their situation but you don't know what their situation is. After it's all over you will have to decide for yourself if you care about them, their situation and or anything else.
I was warned THE MUMMY was awful. I have to say I liked THE MUMMY more. I'm not a person who demands a beginning, middle and end. In fact I like movies that make you ask questions. The acting is good, the direction and photography were good. The thing is...some people will like this some will not. I am luke warm on it.

Not As Bad As I Had Heard

I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise. I have no idea who the Mummy actress was or the other actress. I watched it like any other movie. I didn't go in with any expectations and so it would pass or fail based on what I watched.
I love the original Boris Karloff Mummy film. The sequels not so much. This film took it all and spun it around in a way I did not see coming. As a 'fun' action/fantasy film it was just that fun. I didn't love it but I enjoyed it.
The one piece of irony is the addition of An American Werewolf In London story point which was so clearly ripped off - I realized oh Universal owns that so they could get away with it.
I tried to watch the extras on the disc and found them painful to watch. Tom Cruise and his 'puppet' director were so wanting everyone to love what they did with the story. I didn't care and stopped watching them.
I guess for the amount of money which was probably spent in the movie and promoting it - it might have been a financial disaster but as a no brainer/no expectations it was OK.

Sort Of Funny True Story - Played Over The Top

There are 3 of the new GHOSTBUSTERS actors in this movie. It could have been called GB2. Neither movie was that funny. I loved Zack in THE HANG OVER but so far I have not like him in anything other then BIRDMAN - A MUST SEE in my opinion. Here he is again in a goofball roll which fits him like a glove. Having heard/seen the actual guy in the extras on the blu you can see he too was not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
I like comedy caper films. I thought it might be like LIFE OF CRIME which I enjoyed a lot more then this movie. It is so dumb you think this can't really have happened but it did. Sure Zack and the other actors push it past real life but the fact was it still happened and the people involved were just crazy.
If you like Zack you'll probably like the movie.

Surprise Not Really A Surprise

I saw this trailer on an other Blu disc. Produced by Ridley Scott - That sold me right there.
I actually saw the latest ALIEN film the night before I picked this up. I was in a Ridley mood and found the blu at a great price at my local BB so I picked it up and watched it.
I enjoyed the film a lot (more so then the latest ALIEN film!). I kept thinking I knew Morgan, I recognized the face but just could not place it then realized she was the star from THE WITCH - cool creepy movie but over rated in my opinion. It has a BLADERUNNER feel to it I won't say anymore about that.
As my summary says it was pretty easy to figure out what's what. With that said it was still a fun entertaining film which asked some provocative questions.
It was worth the price of purchase and I have recommended it to several friends.

I went into this having heard all the negative press. I hadn't even seen the trailer. I like Matt Damon, I like Chinese/HK action, fantasy, drama films so I didn't see any reason why it would be bad. It wasn't.
Is Matt Damon out of place? Sure. Is Willem Dafoe out of place, sure. I will say it sort of takes you out of the story but that's OK. It's a beautiful film! Watching it on Blu on my 70" Sony with 7.1 THX sound it was an enjoyable film. I will say it was A LOT better then LEGEND OF TARZAN or even KONG SKULL ISLAND.
If you are expecting a Matt Damon action film you WILL be disappointed. If you are expecting a great Chinese fantasy film with Matt Damon in it you are in for a treat.
The legend of why the wall was built is based on legend. The monsters were as good as the ones in KONG SKULL ISLAND. The colors looked vibrant which is worth noting.
I get this movie isn't for all. You have to accept it for what it is NOT what you think it should be. Enjoy the movie as it was made and learn about other cultures film making styles (with U.S. actors - to try and sell it in the U.S.)

Great Show & Fixed Version Off The Shelf

Just like my previous review for SPEED RACER - how do you write a review for an iconic TV show?
First and foremost! If you have not heard the first pressings of the box set were defective. Mill Creek crossed up something in mastering and the sound was incorrect on a couple discs. I purchased this right off the shelf and went home and tested the known episodes. I was thrilled these were the fixed versions and I did not have to ship off the discs for replacements.
Again as my SPEED RACER review went - DVDs vs Blu. I paid more for my first season of MIAMI VICE Complete First Season then I did for this Blu box. There are 5 seasons. The DVDs took up a lot of shelf space. Now I have 5 slim blu cases in a box which takes up a little bit less then the original first season (on DVD).
It's an iconic show what can I say? They did format it in the 1.33:1 ratio (non widescreen TVs) which some folks have complained about but hey the show was filmed for a square screen. From the episodes I have watched the "REMASTERED IN HIGH DEFINITION and sizzling 5.1 SURROUND SOUND" is a bit much. Back when it was broadcast it was a "stereo" show. When I change the audio during playback the HD sound requires me to turn up the volume. Not saying that is a bad thing just mentioning it.

How do you write a review for a 60s/70s Japanese TV Show dubbed with the folks from Rocky & Bulwinkle?
I grew up on SPEED RACER! I rushed home from school everyday to watch it on a fuzzy UHF channel (precable - I am old). I purchased the DVDs when they came out. The cost of a couple seasons was more then the boxed blu set (and takes up less space). I am disappointed the 'toys' of the DVD sets are gone but that's why it's cheaper I'm sure.
For those who care - the original Japanese track is there. I love the cheesiness of the U.S. dub but you can choose to hear them how they were in their original language.
The price is right, don't put off buying this set. Shelf space - 1 blu case vs the original 5 or so DVD cases. Keep the toys from the DVDs, and save space (plus TRUHD sound)
