Good harddrive to expand your puny console storage
on November 21, 2018

With games like Red Dead Redemption 2 taking up most of the space in your bare bones console, if you don't want to crack open your PS4 to install a new harddrive, this is your next best option. Works pretty flawlessly. Connect to your PS4 or Xbox One and set it up as an external hard drive source for your games. I've used my fair share of external hard drives like this in the past and you can't really get better than Western Digital so if this drive fits your budget and you need space for the next Red Dead Redemption 2 sized game, definitely pick this up.

Decent second monitor for it's price
on October 19, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
For the size and price of this monitor, it's pretty decent. It's not great, but it's pretty decent. I've been using a 1440p 27" monitor as my main monitor for some time but wanted a second monitor to keep an eye on some things while gaming and such. This guy does the trick and doesn't break the pocket book.
Picture quality is pretty OK. I feel like the colors are a little bit washed out even on the highest brightness settings. I've played with the picture settings as well as their built in presets and nothing seems to make the picture "pop". It's definitely not BAD, but I think it could be a little brighter.
Setup is as easy as plugging in to your HDMI port of your video card. I suppose this would also work for a console if you're looking for a monitor just for console gaming. Can't imagine why it wouldn't work.
My biggest complaint about the monitor is the lack of VESA mounting support. It's not necessarily the monitor's fault that I kind of assumed most modern monitors just came standard with VESA mount support these days. I would assume this is how they keep the costs down a little bit by not paying for the license fees to use the standard. On the note of mounting, the included mount is alright. The monitor just kind of clicks into it and you're done. Easy to set up but sturdiness could be a little better. Again, not BAD, just not great.
So I said it a couple times in this review and it stands true for my overall review of this monitor. It's not BAD, it's just not great. This monitor will do fine for most of what you probably need it for. It's cheap and good enough for that price. It won't blow you away but it won't leave you wishing you never pulled the trigger on it either. For a second monitor, it really is good. If you need a cheap main monitor, too, I'd say this will do.

Great and versatile

I don't have a lot of experience with pressure cookers but Ninja makes good stuff. This has a pretty awesome cookbook included (you know, if you don't have the internet or something) and I'm looking forward to checking out a lot more recipes with it. The crazy amount of things you can use this for should be reason enough to buy it but my biggest selling point is how quick is cooks things.
Truth be told, I haven't gotten a lot of chances to cook with this yet but I can say that it's really easy to use (most ninja products have pretty simple to understand instructions) and it made me a nice plate of wings really quick. I'm can't wait to try this out on a lot of my ketogenic meals in the future when meals are quite simple and this promises to knock them out really quickly.
As I end most of my reviews for products I like, if this is in your budget I recommend this.

A fancy coffee maker for a fancy person
on October 19, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
If you feel fancy, this is the coffee maker for you, I think. I've been on the single k-cup coffee makers for years now but am unsure why because I almost always drink more than a single cup of coffee. This is my first normal drip coffee maker in a long time and I'm really impressed with it.
The water tank is very easy to remove to fill up (and a full carafe of coffee uses a full tank of water) so if you're entertaining and making multiple pots of coffee, it's really nice to be able to remove and refill the tank quickly and easily. It's not a dig on the coffee maker but my mindset isn't quite used to refilling the tank after each pot of coffee so I've made a couple of pots that were a quarter cup of coffee made with a full serving of coffee grounds.
Controls are really simple too. A single dial cycles through the various brew modes. Another dial cycles through the size you're looking for. Then just press a button and you're off to the races.
I love the permanent filters. There's a permanent filter for coffee and tea. I haven't made any tea yet but I am a big tea drinker than this will probably just make things even easier to make. You just pour the loose leaf tea (or tea bags according to the instructions) in the filter and select what kind of tea you're making and press go. Cleaning the coffee filter is pretty easy, too.
Overall, I can't say enough good things about this coffee maker and I haven't even tapped it's full potential. I still have yet to make tea or a cup of iced coffee (the coffee maker I got doesn't come with a large cup for brewing straight into so I'm going to buy one first).
If you're looking for a new coffee maker and this fits your budget, I say go for it. I'm not going back to my Kuerig anytime soon.

Really nice feeling mouse
on October 3, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
I decided I wanted a reliable, wireless mouse to replace my Naga mouse I've been using for quite some time. The numpad on the side of the naga definitely serves it's purposes when playing a lot of MMO games but I found myself hardly using it aside from maybe the first couple of numbers. This new "Pro" mouse feels really good and moves great.
There are 2 buttons on the each side of the mouse. The left side buttons take a second to get used to clicking but it's not that bad. It's a huge departure from having 12 buttons I can click with my one thumb. But my naga just doubled as an extra numpad when it wasn't configured for the game I was playing so I could always use the numpad to hit 1 2 or 3 which are almost always bound to something in most games you'll play. So with this guy, you'll need to configure your side buttons for the games your playing. Not too big of a deal. The mouse wheel feels good as well. Everything about the feel of this mouse "feels" very "Pro". The one thing I really miss from my Naga mouse and I still haven't gotten used to yet is the lack of the tilt functions on the mouse wheel. I still try and tilt the scroll wheel to the right or left to go forward or back on the web and such. I'll get used to using the side buttons but it stands out as the only thing I haven't gotten used to quickly with this new mouse. I would have liked it to have a tilting scroll wheel.
Tracking is as great as you can perceive. I haven't noticed any issues at all. There's a button on the bottom of the mouse that cycles through your DPI settings. By default, only about 2 of them are usable without being stupid. You can customize the settings for each stop with the software, though. The button is hidden away under the mouse so you have to go find it to change your setting so you'll probably just find a setting you like and just stick with it. If you change your DPI a lot while in a game, I believe you can bind on the side buttons to switch for you, otherwise this is more of a button you hit between games or never at all really (I haven't pressed it since I found a good setting for myself)
The wireless is great! Feels so good to not have to worry about a wire getting caught on the end of my desk or something sitting near it and catching on the wire. I really like the freedom. The battery life feels really good. I charged it when I first got my mouse and haven't needed to plug it in again since. That's been about a week of pretty regular use (6-8 hours per day) so far. You can also use the mouse while it's plugged in so if you run into an emergency where it dies in the middle of a game, just plug it in real quick and get back to it.
Overall, from the Naga to this, it's very different. I don't know if I would be able to use this mouse while playing something like WoW or another MMO but for pretty much any other type of game, I feel like the tracking, battery life, wireless, side buttons and "feel" are all pretty wonderful and will be working great for me for a long time.

Works great to keep me streaming on Twitch
on September 12, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
This UPS has actually been very useful lately. Storms and other various weather issues at our newly purchased home has resulted in a few brownouts over the last couple of weeks. I have a smaller UPS connected to my cable modem, router and switch to keep the internet up and running during power outages. I connected this new UPS to my gaming machine that I use to stream on Twitch and it has kicked in and saved the day more than once already while I was streaming. Stream continued. All was good. I was happy.
I haven't had any longer outages but real world usage for me wouldn't really ever use that. Any lengthy power outage would enable me plenty of time to wrap things up and shut everything down before issues arise.
Setup is obviously straight forward. The outlets for just plain surge protection vs. battery backup are very well labeled. The screen is very nice and informative. It can toggle itself on and off only when you want to see it or you can force it to stay on. I'm pretty happy with everything.
Overall, this just does that job it's supposed to. I believe uninterruptible power supplies are one of those things you don't really skimp on because you need them to work in an emergency. This has done that job so I'd recommend it if you have the budget for it.

Upgraded from older Yamaha
on June 26, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
I upgraded my old 5.1 Yamaha receiver to this 7.1 4K HDR version. I'm loving it!
I've had a decent amount of luck with Yamaha receivers and this was a good upgrade. The 4K HDR passthrough works great. I spent longer than I should have trying to figure out why HDR wasn't working but it ended up being that I just didn't have HDR enabled on the HDMI port I plugged the receiver into. After that was switched it worked like gangbusters with my AppleTV 4K and my PS4 Pro.
Everything sounds great. The newer onscreen menus are great. My old Yamaha had a really basic menu screen. The auto speaker adjustment microphone worked really well the first time I used it.
I intend to buy new speakers to get the most out of this system but the old speakers I was using with my 5.1 system worked great. There was 1 setting that was mentioned in the setup guide for using 6 ohm speakers. It told me to refer to the manual for how to change this setting but I couldn't find a manual. I ended up needing to download the mobile app that gives you setup instructions and got a digital version of the manual from there. That was my only real issue with the setup process. Everything still sounds good with the older speakers. I assume, spending some money on a decent set of speakers will be even better.
I'd recommend this receiver. It works well with my 4K HDR TV and devices. It sounds good. Setup was somewhat easy.

Good update to an already good pair of headphones
on June 26, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
I have the non-active version of this set of headphones and have enjoyed them for a while. This version adds the "active" moniker that is supposed to be more resilient to sweat. I sweat a lot when I work out so this is great for me. Although I never really had a lot of issues with the old ones.
One of my favorite things about these headphones is the charging case because of the easy to see and read lights. I've had other fully wireless headphones that don't have any status lights on the case and I ended up having the headphones die in the middle of a workout because I forgot to charge them (or didn't realize they needed to be charged). There's a bright light on the inside and on the bottom of this case that's green most of the time but changes to yellow when the battery is running low. I just make sure to charge them when the light turns yellow. The light only lights up when you open and close the case so it's not annoying.
Sound quality is good. I'm no audiophile and I do have to adjust these on occasion so they're deeper into my ears. If any air is able to leak out of the headphones, don't count on hearing any bass. Luckily, I don't have a lot of issues with them staying in my ear so the sound stays pretty decent.
The only other difference from the standard, non-active version of these headphones is the finish. Both the case and the buds have a more matte finish than the non-active version. I actually like the finish a lot.
Overall, I would recommend these to anyone looking for a decent pair of fully wireless headphones. If these cost more than the regular version, I might just recommend the regular version if you don't sweat a lot. Unless you really like the matte finish.

A good 4K TV picture
on June 4, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
This probably won't be a really long review. Bottom line, this TV offers a pretty good 4K HDR picture for it's price range.
Let's talk about setup! Popping the TV out of the box is a 2 person job just because of how large it is. You can probably manage it alone if you're just going to pop the stands on and sit it on an entertainment center but if you want to hang it on the wall, bring a friend as lifting 50+ lbs to hang on a wall mount would not be pleasant alone. That said, there were no surprises here. It was kind of neat that there were 4 screws in the holes for mounting so you don't just have gaping holes in the back of your TV if you don't want to mount it.
Plugging in the TV, we begin the actual setup process. A couple of standard (and not so standard, should "store mode" really be part of the consumer facing setup process?) questions and we got to setting up wifi. Entering my rather long WiFi password was tedious. Input on the remote feels delayed and not very smooth when "typing" and the keyboard layout is the ridiculous ABCDE layout instead of QWERTY. Finally getting my password in, the TV checked for updates and applied them. That's where the breezy setup process ended. After updating, it seems like my network was forgotten. Nothing would connect to the internet. I reentered my password. Still nothing. Turned off the TV and turned it back on. Still nothing. It wasn't until I unplugged the TV for a minute and plugged it back in that it actually connected to my network and the built in apps like Netflix started to work.
The built in apps are nice to have but I'll be using my AppleTV 4K instead. All of the built in apps just feel sluggish with a lot of loading indicators and slow input from the remote. They're usable but far from a good experience. That said, there are some cool things. The "SmartCast" thing that starts up with a bunch of free streams you can watch is pretty cool. I don't have cable so I'm all for any type of service that helps out cord cutters like myself. I logged in to Netflix and started up an episode of Altered Carbon to check out the Dolby Vision 4K. Using the built in Netflix app seemed to take half a minute or so to finally hit 4K quality but it got there and it looks fantastic! There are 2 picture settings called Calibrated and Calibrated Dark which are pretty much setup for you (the Dark profile for if you're in a darker room). The picture quality on these settings is really good and doesn't require any fiddling at all. I was impressed.
Audio quality from the TV is OK. Actually decent for coming from the TV which usually sounds like crap. Volume can be good and the sound filled my room pretty well.
Hooked up my AppleTV 4K and had no issues with it just working. It detected the Dolby Vision and adjusted my settings accordingly. Picture quality looks great still.
So, bottom line, this TV has a great picture in 4K HDR/Dolby Vision. It sounds pretty decent for a TV (but obviously, get a receiver or sound bar or something). The apps that are included are not very great to use but there are a lot of cool things that are just included so if you don't mind the clunky user experience, they'll probably do you pretty well. I can recommend this TV if it's in your budget and you want a nice picture.

Super cool and smart robot!
on June 4, 2018
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
I have a feeling my review is skewed by this being my first robot vacuum. There's this extra "neat" factor that comes with the first time you watch a robot vacuum your floor. Watching it navigate a room it knows nothing about. Watching your cats freak out. All the little things spark an emotional response. This is how I felt when I turned on the robot for the first time.
Trying to set aside my emotional response, I should probably talk about the actual robot a little bit. One of the first things you'll notice is setting it up. I was incredibly surprised by how quickly and easily this was. I figured there would be some sort of training or wifi setup but it was literally "plug in dock", "turn master switch on", "set robot on dock". That's it. It starts charging and if you want it to vacuum, you just press play. This will get you going and I honestly haven't done much more with it than that. It works well with it's default settings but I will end up playing around to see what other cool things it can do.
One of my cats remained on edge even after the vacuum was done. The other cat stalked the vacuum for a whole until it ran out of juice and hobbled it's way back to the charging dock. Sadly, I have a dog that doesn't always not poop on the floor so I won't be able to use the schedule mode. This does exist, though, so you can set it up to run a cycle every morning before you wake up, or while you're away at work.
The sensors seemed pretty cool except for smaller open shelving. Normally, when it senses an obstacle in front of it, it slows down and approaches slower until it nudges it. This open bookshelf unit was empty on the bottom and robo dude couldn't sense them before he rammed them. Wasn't super hard or anything but that was the only thing that went wrong with the sensors.
The vacuum job seemed pretty decent. The debris canister was pretty full after it was done with this room.I did find a couple of things it missed on the floor but not much (and the floor was REALLY dirty as we just finished moving in). My idea of how this is to be used is that you would run it every day or 2 so over time, you'd end up with a mostly clean room that would remain that way. So my initial impression with a very dirty floor was pretty good after a single vacuuming. I'm sure after it fully charges and runs a few more cycles, this room is going to be squeaky clean. The other thing I thought was neat, is when the vacuum hit some dirtier spots (like there was an area with a bit of sand that had spilled in one of the corners) it would slow down and the vacuum spin would speed up so it did a deeper clean for that spot. Speaking of features I still need to try, there is an actual "deep clean" setting where the vacuum is supposed to clean a specific area really well.
I don't know what else to say. Do you want a robot to vacuum for you? This might be the thing for you! I wish I could compare this to other competing products but for now, I really like this specific one so if it's in your budget, pull the trigger!

Is it possible to remove that clip on the wire?

Clip is formed plastic around the wire, so not unless you break the clip. You can move it up and down the wire. I barely noticed it, myself.

Is this earphone compatible with Andriod phone?

I didn't test them out on an Android device, but they're bluetooth headphones. So if your Android device supports Bluetooth audio, they should work fine.
