Speedy and tiny
on May 31, 2022
Posted by: swemoney
This little thing surprised me. I was expecting a pretty fast hard drive that would be fairly close in size to my collection of other portable hard drives I have lying around. The box for this one threw me off because when I opened it, it's so small. Don't let that fool you, though, it packs a punch.
Setup was non-existent for me. I plugged it in and it showed up in Windows immediately. There are installers preloaded on the drive for Windows, Mac and Linux but I didn't care to add anything to my system when the drive was working just fine on it's own.
The box comes with a USB-C to C cable as well as a USB-A to C cable in case you're using it on a system without an available USB-C port. The drive feels pretty nice with a nice rubbery texture that makes it feel rugged and well built for such a small device. I liked the status light was multiple colors instead of the normal single white or green or blue light like I'm used to.
I tested copying some folders with a bunch of small files as well as some larger files and both were very impressive. The drive pretty much kept up with the internal drives the files were being copied from.
I don't really know what else to say. It's a hard drive. It's a really fast hard drive. If you're looking for a large sized external drive that acts like it's connected to a super fast internal interface then this is probably what you're looking for. I can see this coming in handy for video editors that want to be able to take their files with them when they're using multiple workstations or anywhere that may need to work with large files and transfer them between computers quickly. Or even if you just want extra space on your computer but you don't want to crack it open to add any internal storage.

Nice and compact air filtering
on May 21, 2022
Posted by: swemoney
I have another Shark air filter that's a much larger floor unit. It's been working really well for a while now in my dining room area which is a fairly large room with a pretty open space leading to the living room. This is turning out to be a great addition to use in a smaller bedroom while still getting the same good performance.
Setup is a breeze like is usually the case with air purifiers. There are a bunch of labels everywhere telling you to make sure you open up the unit to take the filter out of the bag before you begin operating it. This takes about a minute and you're ready to go. Plug it in and it started up in automatic mode for me.
This smaller unit seems to take care of the same number of particles as the larger one we have does. You have multiple information displays that you can toggle between that tells you how many of each particle size are currently detected, how long it'll take to finish cleaning, or the current % of "air quality" you have. One feature this unit has that my larger one doesn't (which I really wish it did because my toddler really likes to press buttons) is a lock button. You can press and hold the lock button to lock the rest of the buttons from being triggered. This would do wonders to prevent my daughter from accidentally turning the fan up to max because she likes the way it makes beep sounds when she touches it.
Just like my larger unit, this does a good job cleaning the air. It's rated for 500 sq ft and the room I'm currently using it in is probably close to that size and it doesn't have any problem keeping it clean.
If you're in the market for a nice, small air purifier, this one might be a good fit for you if it falls in your budget. I've had good success with Shark brand air purifiers and am happy this one lives up to my expectations.

Excellent sounding and fitting earbuds
on May 21, 2022
Posted by: swemoney
It's been a few years since I've tried some new earbuds and I have to say, big improvements! I like these a lot and will probably be using them as my daily driver even though I'm at home 95% of my life so I don't need anything really portable.
Setup was easy for the most part but could definitely be improved, I think. I read the quick start guide and held both earbuds to pair and then selected it in my iPhone's bluetooth settings. This prompted me to download the app which I did. But then when I went to connect to the earbuds from the app, it didn't work at all until I disconnected them from the phone's bluetooth settings. Very strange. After that little hiccup, I also had the firmware update fail, probably because the earbuds were at 50% battery when I started it and it takes 20 minutes to update. I was pretty impressed that after a handful of minutes in their case, they were topped up to a 90% charge and after restarting the app, I was able to continue the firmware update without any issues. Overall, the setup process is.. fine. It's not like ear pods or anything but these aren't designed for Apple devices so I wouldn't expect that anyways.
The app is a pretty nice companion and gave me a good idea of the capabilities of these headphones. The equalizer felt a little clunky until I realized you don't actually drag the sliders and you can just tap where you want the value to be. There's also EQ toggles for a bass boost as well as a podcast mode that seemed to work well. I was impressed by the bass boost coming out of such a small device. You can also see and customize the shortcut taps. I found the defaults to be pretty intuitive but it was nice to have a reference. Dynamic noise cancellation had a couple options that didn't sound like they made a huge difference but t hey might be more noticeable in really noisy areas or areas with very specific noise. The transparency mode worked pretty well. I was disappointed the volume only controlled the transparency volume and not the volume of what's playing. You only have options for muting the music when transparency is turned on or continuing music when transparency is turned on. It would be great if I could have the music/whatever I'm listening to adjust it's volume lower when transparency is on. Not a huge thing but something I noticed right away.
Sound quality on these things are really good. I'm no huge audiophile or anything but I've tried and tested a good amount of headphones in a casual manner over the last handful of years. These sound fantastic by themselves and considering the size of them and that they're earbuds, I was really impressed. The bass alone sounds very impressive for this size of device and that's without adding anything to the EQ or turning on bass boost. Both music (Apple lossless) and podcasts sounded great. I wish I could go into more detail on exactly what parts of the sound made them sound so good but all I can say is that I was impressed very quickly by the sound I was getting.
Noise cancellation was equally impressive on these tiny things. So impressive that my 2 year old daughter started crying in the bedroom right next door to ours while I was testing these out with my bedroom AppleTV and I had no idea until my wife got out of bed to check on her and I switched transparency mode on. The seal in my ears was really good. One thing I noticed about these headphones that I haven't seen in a lot of other earbuds is a rubber ring around the outside where you put the earbuds in. This acts as an extra gasket closer to the outside of your ears and seemed to work really well. You do get that "in the womb" sound in your head if you're doing things with your mouth like chewing but I didn't find it too distracting or anything.
Fit was good. I didn't feel like these were too tight or too loose. Felt pretty "just right" to me. Your mileage will vary but there are 3 extra tips (plus the ones on the earbuds by default) as well as 2 extra gaskets for around the outside of the earbuds. So you have a lot of options and combinations to try to see if something fits pretty well for you.
Battery life seemed pretty good as well. And charging felt really quick. I didn't actually time it but just 10 minutes or so in the case seemed to almost completely top them off for me. I'm not 100% sure how many charges the case has because it's so easy to keep them plugged in or sitting on a wireless charge pad and just toss the buds in there when they need to be topped off or when I'm done using them. If you're planning on using these all day, you'll need to take a break for 10 minutes or so to charge the buds up but I would assume you'd have plenty of charge in the case for at least a couple full charges.
The only disappointing things for me kind of goes back to the sort of disappointing setup process. I was hoping switching between devices would be easy to do because the app has a section for "connected devices" which I was expecting to use to switch between my iPhone and AppleTV. After watching TV for a while, the app no longer wanted to connect to the earbuds so I was unable to switch back to my phone. I ended up unpairing and repairing them which is kind of a pain to do every time you want to use a different device. I'm hoping this is something that straightens itself out because I can see the functionality should be there. If all I need to do is load up the app, and select a new device to switch to (like I'm fairly certain is the intended function), I'll be quite happy with that experience as well.
All in all, these are great headphones. A bit on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. They sound great. The app works pretty good in a sea of products with terrible apps and they fit comfortably without really feeling like they're in at all aside from the "in the womb" feel in your ears from the noise cancellation. If you have the budget to splurge on a good pair of earbuds, these might be the ones for you.

All around decent monitor
on May 11, 2022

Monitors are one thing that I feel like it doesn't matter how much research I do, I still have no idea what to get. This monitor doesn't disappoint and is a rather nice upgrade from my 1080p G-Sync compatible ASUS monitor.
So far, this monitor has given me everything I wanted. Colors look good. Resolution made me remember how much of a difference there is between 1080p and 1440p (it's big). Now I have so much more room for activities! Refresh rate says it's 1ms response time and my eyes can't tell if that's true so I guess it's good enough. G-Sync compatible (or native) has been the one must for me since having so many issues with a monitor that only claimed FreeSync compatibility. Can't live without it now.
Setup was a breeze as it should be with any monitor these days. Plugged in the display port to my computer and we're off the the races. The menu is easy to navigate and change with a single joystick style nub under the monitor. The only other buttons you can press are preset buttons which is a really cool feature. You have 3 buttons you can save preset settings to so you can swap them on the fly quickly depending on what you're playing and what kind of screen settings you prefer at that time. I can see this coming in handy when switching to your FPS game of choice (I don't play a lot of FPS games) and you want to have the virtual center reticle on the screen and then you can switch back to another profile real quick when you're no longer playing that game (or you don't need the reticle anymore).
The monitor is also VESA mountable which was important for me. The 100mm mounting bracket fit perfectly without any issues.
I'm trying to come up with a negative for this monitor and can't think of anything. It does it's job. Picture looks great. The monitor is advertised as having HDR10 support but I haven't figured out how to enable it anywhere. That could be the one negative aspect although I didn't get this montior for it's HDR support since the brightness isn't really going to give you a great HDR experience anyways.
So bottom line, I think this is a pretty affordable 1440p monitor that looks good and has a decent amount of features. If it's in your budget, pick one up.

Compact, powerful and a great alternative to floss
on April 23, 2022

from Schaumburg, IL
Who doesn't hate flossing? I just don't do it. It's a pain. But I'll probably start doing a lot more with this fancy thing. It does a pretty good job from what I can tell and my mouth feels pretty clean afterwards.
Setup is dead simple. Fill the tank with water (it's removable so you don't have to worry about getting the rest of the device wet) and plug it in. It comes with 3 different pick heads that all do things a little different which is explained in the instructions. There's a carry case that holds all 3 of them as well.
You have quite a few options when it comes to actually flossing. Depending on the pick head you use, as well as the floss setting you use AND the power setting you set, you can have pretty different results. I have fairly sensitive teeth when I went with that setting and used the quad head (which was also stated to be good for sensitive teeth). My mouth felt a little weird after flossing the first time, probably because I never really floss. Not bad weird, just different. It felt like it did something good.
The whole thing isn't tiny but it's also not super bulky. I imagine some people may have difficulty fitting it on a very small and/or cramped vanity sink but I was able to find a place pretty easy for ours. Cleanup is also pretty easy as you just rinse off the head and store it in the carry case. Replace the water when it gets low. Low maintenance.
If you hate flossing but don't want to not do it, you might want to give this thing a try. It's small enough for me, low maintenance and seems to do a pretty good job at making my mouth feel fairly clean.

ILLUMINATING EYE MASSAGER As the eye contour has delicate skin that is up to 5 times thinner than facial skin along with muscles that can be overworked through blinking 10,000 times a day and movement every 10 seconds, the area is very prone to signs of stress, lack of sleep and aging. The IRISTM, with its innovative Alternating T-SonicTM Technology was specially developed as an answer to the strains the eye contour undergoes to bring every user refreshed, younger-looking eyes.

Some quirks but overall did good
on February 17, 2022

My wife and I both tried this product. Out of curiosity for me and probably more of the intended demographic for her.
Setup was fairly easy. Ours didn't have much of a charge left after opening it but a quick charge with the included USB cable and we could try it out.
How to use the massager is where it falls a little flat. My wife and I tried it for the first time separately and both had the same thing to say about the buttons. They're just not great. The middle button felt impossible to press at times. Plus and minus were kind of hit or miss. Feedback on whether you actually pressed the button was often times absent. The buttons felt like you needed either press really hard or use your thumbnail to jab at the button somehow. The worst part is the lock/unlock action requires you to press and hold plus and minus for 3 seconds. It took me more than a few tries and half of the time I didn't know if I had successfully locked or unlocked it at all. The user experience could use a lot of work here.
After all that, the massager did feel pretty good. I just used it as recommended in their quick start guide but without the cream and it definitely did a good job of massaging around my eyes. I liked it. My wife used it with the cream and for longer. She also felt like it did a good job.
If you can get over the clunky "interface" then you could have a pretty decent massager on your hands here.

A step in the wrong direction, sadly
on February 9, 2022
Posted by: swemoney
from Schaumburg, IL
I'm really sad that this sock had regressed in features since the Smart Sock 3 was taken off the market in the US. We've used multiple smart sock 3s since our daughter was born and I love the peace of mind that they've given us. Unfortunately, this new "Dream Sock" is pretty much a watered down version of the Smart Sock 3 for the same price.
The Smart Sock 3 was able to read your child's heart rate AND blood oxygen level in real time. This new Dream Sock looks to only give you their heartrate so if you were looking for the O2 reading as a differentiator from some of their competitors, you might be able to look elsewhere again. The loss of this functionality might be an easier pill to swallow if the price wasn't the same as the Smart Sock 3 when it was available. The sensors do look very similar so maybe the sensor is still there and Owlet is just waiting for FDA approval to activate and market that functionality again but for now it stings to have a brand new sensor with less features than the one we got 2 years ago.
As far as setup goes. It's fairly easy and straight forward for most wifi networks. I spent a fair bit of time troubleshooting an issue with all of my Owlet base stations that ended up being the strict DNS-over-TLS setting that I had recently enabled on the new router I bought. Owlet appears to not be able to connect to a network that uses this setting. Turning it off brought all of the base stations back and at that point it was easy to connect again. I only bring it up in case it saved someone a few hours of troubleshooting since, at the time, there was no mention of the incompatibility on their troubleshooting pages.
Another thing I am not happy with on this new sock is the need for a new app for whatever reason. Apparently they were unable to update the older Owlet app with the lesser functionality of this new sock so there's a whole new app that looks and acts very similar. This is probably more of an annoyance and not a huge deal, especially if this is the only sock you have. If you have a Smart Sock 3 already and are adding this to your collection, it'll probably be more annoying. Luckily the data from the old socks are all saved on the account online so you're not losing any data or anything.
Using the sock is simple. It wraps around your baby's foot and usually you'll cover it up with the footy of their PJs or a sleeper sack if they sleep in one so they can't pry it off. If we don't have our child's covered, she will almost immediately take it off. But the readings come in and we haven't experienced any false alarms or weird positioning of this sock yet. It's a rare occurrence on the older socks but it does happen occasionally. There is information in the app and online about how to attempt to avoid false red alarms.
Overall, this sock functions almost identically to the old Smart Sock 3 just without the O2 sensor that set it apart from competitors. I really hope the sensor is still there and they're able to activate it with a firmware update after FDA approval but at the time of this review, that's not the case so I wouldn't buy this without confirming that. I would recommend the old sock if you can find it somewhere. Or wait until it's available again in the US.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Cute and functional

It's weird to write a review for something that I can't really use. These headphones seem to work well, though. One issue that you might have would be the pressure they seem to have. The ears press together pretty hard so if you have a child that may be sensitive to that pressure these might not be the ones for you. Understandably, it's a fine line between staying on the head pressure and too much. Another issue may be the cup size depending on how large your child's ears are. I feel like these cups are a little too thin and they touch my kid's ears and maybe squish them in a little bit.
Setting up the bluetooth audio was as simple as most devices. Hold the power button and then select the device in your bluetooth settings on your phone and you're connected. Audio sounded good from what I could test and it didn't sound incredibly loud when maxed out but that's pretty subjective.
Overall, headphones/earmuffs are a tricky thing to review since everyone's child is different and has different needs. These work well if they fit and don't bother your child but that's going to be up to you.

Easy to install and setup
on January 26, 2022
Posted by: swemoney
This switch and other offerings from WeMo have been pretty good to me. I have a handful of them and aside from some disconnects on occasion, I find their easy of installation and setup to be good enough of a tradeoff.
Installation is simple enough if you have a neutral wire behind your switch and are comfortable installing a light switch yourself. If not, get a professional.
Setup is just as easy as any WeMo device. You can set up straight through Home (on iOS) or through the WeMo app (or both). I'm not sure what the process looks like through Android. I rarely go through the WeMo app unless I find that Home is having trouble connecting to the switch, sometimes the app has better luck and reconnects quicker. The calibration for how dim your lights go is pretty nice too so it can find the minimum voltage your lights activate at and scale up from there instead of having a huge dead zone at the bottom of the dimmer.
Overall, I'm still happy with all of my WeMo devices mainly for how easy they are to setup and connect to Home on iOS. If you need an easy dimmer switch and this one is in your budget, definitely pull the trigger on this one.

Great and easy to use for streamers or youtubers
on January 5, 2022
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
If you have a high quality device you want to capture for your live streams or YouTube videos this one might be pretty good for you. I compare this to the Elgato CAMLink which is also a good piece of equipment. This winds up being a little cheaper and could be just as good or better for your needs.
Setup was pretty easy. I downloaded their Assist software which found my device and downloaded the software I needed automatically. The only issue with it was that it needed to download another update separately for the RecCentral application right after it installed via the Assist software. No big deal though.
You get two applications you can use depending on your use case. If you're connecting a console to this device or you want to directly stream from it, you'll want to use the RecCentral application which lets you preview and directly stream to your platform of choice. I didn't notice any latency in the testing that I did. I played my console games in 4K directly on my monitory. If I was streaming with this, I'd probably be fine with just capturing the desktop while it played in full screen with my two PC setup but you can always add the RecCentral application to your OBS capture directly too.
The other way you can use this is by hooking up a high quality mirrorless camera to it. You can either directly add the CAP device to OBS if you want but you can also use their CamEngine software which lets you tweak the image a bit before going to OBS. You then add their CamEngine device to OBS instead and you get all that post processing on your video already. It even includes a handful of SnapChat-like filters if you want to do some goofy stuff like give yourself a beard or whatever.
Overall, it didn't take long to setup and the quality output from the device looked great. For the price of this, I would recommend it to anyone who's looking to capture a 4K console or camera for your stream or recorded content. The only issue I found was that there was no way to output 4k60. The advertising for the device says 4k30 recording and 4k60 streaming but I was unable to find a place to set 4k60 anywhere. I think the advertising is just a little misleading and it means you can input 4k60 but you'll only get 4k30 out. If you definitely want 4k60 output, you may need to look elsewhere. For this price, you're going to be restricted to 1080p60 or 4k30.
I can recommend this to anyone who doesn't need 4k60+ output. The software doesn't feel super bloated. The device worked nicely right out of the box after a quick download. And I don't think you can beat the price for the build quality.

With no wires in the way, Bose SoundSport Wireless Sports Earbuds keep you moving with powerful audio. Perfect for exercise and running with a sweat and weather resistant design and StayHear+ tips designed for comfort and stability. The Tile app makes your headphones easy to find if they ever go missing.

Is it possible to remove that clip on the wire?

Clip is formed plastic around the wire, so not unless you break the clip. You can move it up and down the wire. I barely noticed it, myself.

Is this earphone compatible with Andriod phone?

I didn't test them out on an Android device, but they're bluetooth headphones. So if your Android device supports Bluetooth audio, they should work fine.
