This is more psychological thriller than horror, with a suitably creepy 70's vibe. It starts off slowly as the characters develop and we learn more about the dynamics of this slightly dysfunctional family. Is Martin really crazy, or is he right? Government conspiracy to manipulate veterans, or alien invasion? This is quite dark but entertaining nevertheless, with some clever writing and plot twists thrown in as things are eventually explained. Despite the absence of any truly sympathetic characters, it was fun. Recommended.
This one starts quickly and doesn't let up, the action (and gore) coming at you relentlessly. It takes a handful of overused plot devices and renders an engrossing and entertaining little horror flick. I didn't have a single "saw that coming" moment, and there are even a couple of twists that I didn't anticipate. Great cast, location, script, effects...it's all good! It's not until viewing the "making of" feature that you realize what a low budget effort this was. Fun from start to finish, this one is low budget horror done right!
I'm unfamiliar with the game, but this is a pretty entertaining zombie flick. It has a good cast and well written script, and the special effects and action sequences are well done. It makes use of numerous plot devices we've seen countless times, such as scheming bureaucrats and generals, quarantine zones scheduled for pending immolation, and goofy improvised weapons. The humor is quite well done and managed to keep it entertaining enough. I've come to the reluctant conclusion as a fan of the zombie genre, however, that it's all pretty much been done and there are few premises left to explore. This is a solid film that does nothing wrong, and I recommend it with reservations.
Actually more like 2.5, this was a pretty standard low budget horror/thriller except...I somehow found it better than expected. It had a great cast (Busey, Jones, Trejo and the requisite "hot chick"), poorly written dialogue, and every premise and plot twist ever used in the genre rolled into one script. This should have been a recipe for catastrophe, but it worked on some level without openly descending into outright parody or worse. It was kinda fun, actually...sort of. Check it out if the price is right, but don't expect great film making here, just a goofy good time.
This is a spectacular zombie action movie from Australia which bears little resemblance to "Mad Max" or "Dawn of the Dead". Having seen most of the low budget zombie movies of recent years, I can say this is the best to come along in some time. The action is in your face non-stop from the opening credits, the humor is intelligent, and the special affects and acting are excellent. There are even a couple of "didn't see that coming" moments which are also quite well done. This never distracts with low budget anything, it's just a fun ride form start to finish. View the "Wyrmdiaries" special feature and you'll probably agree this is low budget film making at it's best. Zombie fans will dig this one!

This is an example of low to mid-budget film making done right. A clever premise, well written script and competent actors turn potential drawbacks (limited locations and primary characters) into strengths.
The story is kept lean and 104 minutes seems just right; nothing seems to have been edited (poorly) to meet a contrived maximum run time at the expense of a coherent story line.
There are a number of intriguing plot twists and a couple of concepts best contemplated later, and a great little surprise ending which wraps things up definitively.
Don't be misled by the synopsis or packaging, this is a psychological thriller wrapped up in a time-bending premise, and it's a good one! It gets five from me.

Ordinarily, this would be a mediocre psychological thriller with a bit of paranormal content thrown in, the primary detriment being a cast with absolutely no sympathetic characters. Each of them is corrupt and devious, with even our presumed protagonists seeming "not right" most of the time.
Just when following the unfortunate lives of our characters became tedious and I found myself ready to reach for the remote, I realized the above was entirely by design. The truth is revealed, events are explained, and "loose ends" are tied up masterfully!
This is one of the better movie endings I have encountered recently, and since the synopsis on the box gives nothing away I was able to say "never saw that coming...or that!" Stick with it, put up with these people for awhile, and be treated to one supremely diabolical finish.
I would give this a three as a run of the mill "whodunnit" with occasionally contrived performances, but I think it rates a four for the killer ending.
"Alien invasion", "Apocalypse"...I'm in! Not quite what you'd expect at first glance, however. We only encounter the aliens on several occasions, and they aren't your usual invaders. This is character driven drama, and en example of low budget film making at its best. Cleverly written and cast, this is part western, part Mad Max, with a good deal of wry humor thrown in. It could have crossed the line into parody at any number of points (and I occasionally expected it to), but it never did. It went right up to that line, but remained true to the premise and the quest. Oh..,.there's a quest! Overall, this thing hooked me from the start and I had a blast with it. Be sure to let the credits roll and watch this to the very end! Hint-never saw that one coming!
Jason Statham has effectively broken out of the unfortunate tendency of action stars to make essentially the same movie over and over again. This trend was evident with "Redemption", an excellent (although dark) effort, and now is fully realized with "Wild Card". Equal parts drama and psychological thriller, with the requisite violence occurring only with reluctance rather than gratuitousness, this is an example of thoughtful character driven film making. It is well written and acted and has a clever and darkly humorous soundtrack. I consider this an action drama for adults.
