A UV filter is a must on any lens. UV filters protect the surface of your lens against scratches, dust, moisture and fingerprints, which in the long term can harm the lens coatings.
UV filters also minimize atmospheric haze, which results in better overall image quality. Protective filters also keep dust, moisture and fingerprints at bay, but are not as effective in cutting through atmospheric haze.

A good extra-wide angle lens...

I have an 18-135 mm STM zoom lens for my Canon camera which is equivalent to a 24-200mm zoom lens on a normal camera. At times, I found the wide angle to be a little narrow for some shooting. I looked at the Canon 10-22 USM zoom lens but found out from reviews that the cheaper 10-18 STM lens was superior to the 10-22 lens.
Like the 18-135 lens, this lens exhibit some barrel distortion (all wide angles do, some more than others) but otherwise I find this lens to be just what I need. The lens is not expensive and very lightweight. It goes perfectly with my 18-135 lens for traveling...

Great range, inconsistent signal...

In a way, I love this router. It is a lot stronger than my older Netgear 6300 or Linksys E4200. When I first set it up, I got 90% signal in one section of the house (the older system gave me 60%) and another section got 80%. Things was going great, but for some reason, every few days, I noticed that the signal weakened considerably, dropping down to 18% and 5%. The only way to restore the signal was by rebooting the router and reconfiguring my devices.
I see that some other owners were having the same issues. The thing is, I bought this router so I could stream videos and music from my cloud drive throughout the house. When it is working, it is great, I can tell when the signal drops because the videos start stuttering. So far, I had the router for about six weeks and had to reset everything twice.

Good inkjet printer, but expensive to operate...

I bought this printer because it was the only reasonably priced printer that can print on blank CDs and DVDs. HP and Canon no longer have that ability.
In use, the printer is a bit awkward. You need to remove a disc tray from the bottom of the printer. You then have to push the upper paper output tray into the printer. You place the disc in the disc tray and then insert the disc tray into a slot above the output paper tray until it is aligned. Once you get used to it, it is quite easy.
The output paper tray is retracted into the printer, making for a very compact footprint. When powered on, the motorized tray extends out. When the printer is powered off, the output paper tray retracts back into the printer. If you print on disc, you have to have the output paper retract back into the printer (there is a button on the touch panel to retract the tray).
The built-in scanner is nice but the scanned images appear crooked on screen. It is not as good as a dedicated scanner. While the resolution is fine, the scanned image is not very detailed. Hair on photos of people are not well defined and appear smeared.
I do not have the printer connected to the wireless network so I cannot comment on that. I use a USB cable which is not supplied.
The ink cartridges are expensive, that's why the printer is so cheap (I paid $130 for the printer). One complete set of cartridges was about $80. I would buy the high capacity cartridges but they are not available at the store. The initial supplied cartridges only have about 15% of the ink that the cartridge can hold, so buy another set right away. Replacing the ink cartridges is rather tricky. You only have a set time before the ink carrier moves back into the printing mode. This means you have to open all the new cartridges from the box, remove them from the sealed package and remove the caps before going into cartridge replacement mode. Otherwise the carriage carrier goes back to its normal position and the printer will go into alignment mode before all the ink is installed.
The print quality is fantastic. The colors are more vibrant and accurate than HP or Canon printers. The output is a lot better than color lasers which cannot print photo quality images. When printing in standard quality, the printer is extremely fast. Even in high res mode, the printer is pretty quick. For best results, I strongly recommend the Epson branded paper. I have used Kodak and Costco's photo quality paper and noticed that the ink tends to smear or blend. With Epson's paper, the detail is a lot more defined than the other papers.
In use, the touch screen is large enough and it angles forward when powered on. When pressing the buttons on the touch screen, the LCD panel pushes in rather hard and does not seem to be that sturdy.
Overall, the printer is well built but the complex tray system makes me think about how durable the printer may be. Still for the price, the printer is an excellent buy, but I think they sell the printers below cost in order to profit on the after market inks. The standard ink cartridge will only last about 400-500 pages, while the hi-cap ones last 800 pages.
Note that the rated pages do not count full photo prints. Full photo prints will only give you about 100 pictures on a set of cartridges.

A Very Good Miyazaki film...

Porco Rosso (the Crimson Pig) is pretty much an unnoticed Ghibli film. The film deals with a heroic pilot in the 1930s who was cursed and was changed to a human with a pig's head (the reason was never disclosed). It takes place in the Adriatic off Italy where air pirates roam freely. Porco is a mercenary who is challenged to a duel by an American mercenary who is seeking the reputation of shooting down the famous pig.
The animation is atypical of Ghibli's releases during the time period. The flying scenes are quite good and the aircraft used in the film is based on real planes (a Curtis and a Savoia S-21) .The transfer on the Blu-Ray disc is impeccable and is a lot better than the original DVD. The audio is clear, but not much in terms of surround effects.

good family drama

Bill Murray is on of my favorite actors and he does not disappoint here... He appears to be a lonely drunk to a single mom who moves in next door. She has to work late and entrusts her introverted son to his care. The son learns some real lessons in life and becomes stronger in character.
The only problem with the movie is that it has some unanswered issues (which is answered in the deleted scenes). Bill Murray is great in this movie.
The video quality is pretty good. The audio is sometimes a bit hard to understand because of the gruff vocals in Murray's character.

This movie is all action. The plot is a bit ludicrous but Timothy Olyphant and Olga Kurylenko do a passable acting job. If you don't mind watching an action movie and cannot take it seriously, it is a worthwhile watch... Kinda like the Taken series of movies... Very implausible but fun...

Personal Home Cloud Network setup
I am looking at setting up a home network using either a WD or Seagate My Cloud hard drive. The concern I have is we use multiple systems in the house (PCs, MacBook, IPad, Galaxy, ....) and I want to be able to access the home network using any and all of these systems. When I read through the setup instructions for the WD and Seagate, they are either for the PC or Mac; there's not much guidance on across platform setup. Am I able to setup the network so I have access to it using any of my systems? if so how do I go about doing this?
It does not matter what OS you use as the Cloud drive will appear as a network drive. If the device can detect the network, it should detect the cloud drive.
The only thing is how the devices have the ability to back up to the cloud drive. They all can back up but it may have to be done manually...

Newer motherboards do not have IDE/PATA connectors. You will have to buy a new HDD as the ribbon cable is a parallel cable and the newer ones are serial type and are not compatible...

SATA drives are getting cheap... You could pick up a 250GB SATA drive for about $80 or so. You have to check if your computer has an internal SATA connector. IF not, you will need to buy a PCI SATA card.

You have to check if your eMachine desktop uses an IDE/PATA or a SATA HDD... I think the eMachines used IDE/PATA connectors. If so, you will have a hard time finding a replacement as they have been more or less phased out by SATA drives. I would look into a WD 250GB HDD. Again, you will have to get more information as really older computers may not recognize drives of large capacity...

You can put in any desktop HDD with no issue. You just have to make sure if the interface is SATA or IDE.
