Great Geoffrey Rush: unusual, interesting, bizarre

This is one of the Geoffrey Rush movies that is very different. I loved his acting abilities in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" which was done on cable. His characters are so alive and have such high quality energy. This movie has that same acting quality.
It is a very bizarre movie in an interesting way that once you start watching the movie you don't want to stop because it is so different & unusual a story
. All the characters were well acted. They all deserve credit for making a good, well balanced group of characters; Sylvia Hoeks' character adds to the bizarre & unusual tones, while Jim Sturgess and Donald Sutherland's characters are also non-typical and add to the unusual aspects of this film. But Geoffery Rush is the stand out!!!
At one point I started to wonder if there wasn't something else going on that was not obvious at all and was kept low & well hidden. I had that feeling in my gut about it and....... sorry no spoilers...you'll just have to watch this movie.
Apparently it was released outside the US and wasn't in theaters here that I know of. I can't really remember how I found the trailer online. ( I don't watch cable tv at this time and therefore don't see those movie trailers.) However, I'm very glad I found it!
I like Geoffrey Rush very much!! I wouldn't have bothered with any "Pirates of the Caribbean"" sequels if my Captain Barbossa character wasn't among them.
I think Geoffrey Rush is an incredibly talented actor and this is another one of his gems you might not have seen. It is well worth it to own!!

Awesome fun & cool monsters of mass destruction

Great job with Jaegers, loved the look of these live robotic heros. Monsters were weird & different for me since I didn't watch that style in Aime...but I still liked them. Good inner & outer conflicts with human characters. Good humor as well with the two scientists and esp. with Ron Perlman. He always has great comedy!
I found all the technology well done... Jaegers rock!! I wanted to know more about the insect typish creatures in the other dimension.
Good story for fantasy, science fiction, action..
This movie is made so well. Great shots & CGI. I liked ALL the character; would have liked to have seen more of the Russians and Chinese Jaegers pilots! I would have even liked an extended version. I'm glad I bought it on blu-ray!

It is fun to watch the plot unfold as you meet each character. I'm glad there is more romance verses more gore. I see the series getting better per season. I liked Lexi's character a lot...& was sorry they killed her off so soon....she seemed fun, not scary and so different than the other Vampires. I also liked the twist in characters in Damon & Stefhan revealed at the end..

Great Music esp. for a low budget independent

This is the director's 1st movie that I know of. The music is great!!! It is what's keeps the movie going esp. in the beginning where it is somewhat slow and a little undeveloped HOWEVER it gets very good once they go into a recording studio. I found the music much better than "Inside Llewyn Davis" (their song won the Academy Award) and it was more upbeat as well as the lead character much more likable! The music alone is worth the whole movie. I will look forward to more movies from this director as well as more music from the 2 lead characters!

I usually prefer HBO shows like Game of Thrones, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, The Leftovers, etc. They are 1st class. Finally Showtime has given them some competition! Penny Dreadful was much, much more than I could have hoped for.
I do not have Showtime, but only saw the 1st episode during a free preview. I bought the entire episode in blu-ray sight unseen. NO gamble here.
I watched Eva Green on Star's "Camelot" series. She was fantastic!! Unfortunately "Camelot" was released at the same time as season 1 of "Game of Thrones"...No wonder there wasn't a 2nd season; look at the competition.
"Penny Dreadful" has all your old monster favorites with a very different "spin" with lots of surprises. The acting, sets, costumes were all wonderful to watch and absorb. I found many moments to be intoxicating. No Spoilers.
This is not your usual tales of horror and gore. In Fact, I wouldn't even use those words to describe the truth of this series.
If you like great storytelling, history and great visuals, do mesmerize yourself from today's world and enjoy their's.

One of the greatest of all film pioneers, German expressionism master Fritz Lang, made movie history in 1924, when he mounted an epic-length cinematization entitled Die Nibelungen, adapted from the 13th Century German epic of the same name that also served as the basis for Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle of operas. Lang issued his movie in two parts - Siegfried's Death and Kriemhild's Revenge - both of which appear in this box set, back to back, in all of their silent glory. Death dramatizes such events as the forging of Siegfried's sword, his confrontation with the dragon, the slaying of Alberich, and finally, Siegfried's death per the order of Brunhild. In Revenge, Kriemhild seeks vengeance against Brunhild for Siegfried's murder.

Fritz Lang in Germany: B 4 Hollywood; great!

I have seen many Fritz Lang and other early movie maker's films. Fritz Lang was a" king" in Germany when he made this movie; all the money & artistic freedom he wanted, he got. Not like his days in Hollywood.
I read many reviews before I bought this dvd. ALL were excellent! They were all correct. The Quality, Music, style, story, sets, cinematography, etc. of this silent film is great compared to many others at this time period. The restoration was very good considering not just the years gone by, but also many negative circumstances.Do some research & you will understand.
The movie is a great Germany adventure/ fantasy based on Wagner's "Siegfried"
I even went as far as getting a copy of The Metropolitan Opera's performance of "Siegfried" ( late 1990's/2000) by Wagner, which
this film is based on at the local library...it was awesome!! I never got into much opera & this German cast and sets as well as many other elements was superb! I even watched other Met Opera's Wagner productions because of it. "Siegfried" stood out the most.
If you like adventures & fantasy like "Lord of the Rings" & "THE Hobbit", then THIS movie on this dvd is a must!! No spoilers, but there are some similarities.
Even if you do not like silent movies, overlook the fact that this is one. You will be surprised!
