Basic model at a good price point.

I have been using the Rexing V1 Dash Cam for about a week now. The results are mixed -
Installation
Rexing made it easy to set up and easy to install ( they include a tool to run the wire underneath the molding of your car.) The reality is most dash cams are straightforward but the addition of a installation tool was a nice touch.
Quality of build
Construction seems adequate but it feels a bit light weight for it’s size. Perhaps that is due to some type of thermal properties ( dash cams are renowned to have their batteries over heat. The plastic has a soft feel to it and resists finer prints. The buttons have a nice tactile feel to them.
Video quality
The video is 1080P and was okay in day light. The colors were not as rich as I would have liked but the picture is clear and the field of vision is excellent. The night video was much better than expected and Rexing gets high marks for that.
Features
Basic. Basic. Basic. Yes, it is 1080P with collision detection. But – no wi-fi, no bluetooth, no app, no included GPS, no option for 2nd channel rear camera, no included memory card.
So this is a hard review. There is nothing wrong with the Rexing V1– it is perfectly competent for a sub $100 dash cam. It is a solid design that does what it is supposed to and will be perfectly fine for those on a budget. The controls are easy and intuitive , the ergonomics are good , the picture quality is good and it is easy to install. But for me, it just is not enough - I need a better feature set. I was looking through the the other Rexing products and for $30 to $70 more, you can get wi–fi, GPS logger and dual channels ( depending on the model.) If you are looking to spend under $100, this is a decent dash cam for the money. For a little more money , you can get other Rexing dash cams that are a better value with a more rich feature set.

It does all things but set proper expectations.

The Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro All-in-One Multi-Surface Cleaner is supposed to be all things for floor cleaning. A vacuum and washer for both hard floors and carpets. Like many devices that try to be an all in one,The Crosswave is not the best at all the functions but does do them relatively well. Will it vacuum as well as an dedicated vacuum or clean a carpet as well as a dedicated rug shampooer ? No. not even close. The vacuum is average at best and it is just not powerful enough to be a good carpet cleaner ( if you do not have strong suction you will not have a good carpet cleaner.) It is at best, a spot vacuum and light spot carpet cleaner. However, what it does well is is clean hardwood floors. My house is pretty spotless and I regularly clean my floors. So I did not expect much and , frankly, did not see much happening at first. But upon closer inspection, I could see the waste water definitely dirty – it was cleaning dirt that I could not even see at first. To clean, I made two passes with everything active to clean and then one slow pass to with the solvent/water not engaged ( vacuum mode.) The vacuum mode after washing the floor dries it nicely. There was minimal moistness on the floor after using the machine to dry. Now back to the the carpet cleaning function, I do not have pets and my carpets are very clean. So I did not have the opportunity to test it on anything heavily soiled. When I did test it, I found the cleaning to be mild and it left a bit too much of water/solvent on the carpet . In my opinion this was a direct reflection of the suction power and indicative of not being powerful enough to be a carpet cleaner. To be fair, Bissell promotes this a multi-surface cleaner and not a carpet cleaner but I could see how some may expect more in the that respect. Assembling the Crosswave is easy - simply slide in the handle and attach the water and solvent tank. It literally took under 60 seconds. The cord is relatively long but there is not much in the way of cord management. With the unit running and the trigger for the water and solvent engaged, the machine was quite loud. Manageable but definitely loud. The cleaner is very light weight and easy to maneuver.
So the big question, will you like it? The answer is maybe. If you set the proper expectations that this is mainly for hardfloors with the occasional spot clean of a rug then yes. If you expect it to do a deep clean of carpets or if you have thick carpets then no. I do not think Bissell was designing the machine to the be the best of all worlds, it was designed to be multi surface cleaner and you have to give up some of the strengths of a dedicated machine for the respective function to do that. I am going to recommend the unit based on the good hardwood floor cleaning and if you need more of a carpet cleaner, look to the Bissell dedicated carpet cleaners.

Turtlebeach nails it.
on April 23, 2018

from Farmingdale, NY
Let me start off by saying that the Turtle Beach Stream Mic sounds better than most headsets I have tried. I used it with both my PC for VOIP and my Xbox One and it is just great. Set up was easy, plug it in and go ( you may have to make some setting adjustments on the XBox One.) I never liked headsets for listening to game play, I find them distracting and have only liked the original XBox 360 wireless chat headset. Now, with the Turtle Beach stream mic, I can enjoy completely wireless chat while listening to the full sounds coming from my television. At first, I was concerned about the sound pcik up from my television but Turtle Beach has it covered. There are 4 different modes of mic patterns that you can choose from for the room – cardiod, hypercardiod, omnidirectional and bi-directional. They give a listing of how each mode behaves in the documentation. Essentially cardiod is for streaming in a relatively quiet room with it picking up sound from in front of the mic, hypercardiod is for a loud room with picking up sound from in front of the mic ( this is one I ended up using,) bidirectional is for two way mic use like an interview and omnidirectional is picking up sound from all around. Whatever type of technology Turtlebeach has developed for the mic, it really works well. I had zero clarity issues and little pick up of backround sound. Not bad for $80 mic. It comes with a nice long USB wire and is built relatively well. I would have liked to see more metal in the construction but I am sure Turtle Beach is trying to keep the price down. So in summary, this is 5 star win for Turtle Beach and I recommend it completely.

Nicely made but a miss
on April 18, 2018

I have owned several different types of JLab wireless headsets over the years. The JLab Epic Sport earbuds is the latest in their Epic Sport line. It has nearly all the features you would expect - Bluetooth 4.2, water and dust resistant, good battery life , hands free phone answering , control music etc. However, there are some nice features that not all the competition has :
* Magnetic charger. No more fumbling to insert a micro USB for charging, just a simple snap on charger. Far better than nearly anyone else.
* 3 different sound modes - Signature, Balanced, and Bass Boost. All adjustable from the controls on headset
You get many different ear tips and cush fins to create a custom fit. The wire that the ear pieces connect to wraps around the ear to give it a tight fit ( to a point.) I’ve used them over a week and it took a while to get close to a tight fit. I have small ears and never got a perfect fit that held in place all the time. For me, it took a lot of fiddling and it was tiresome. With a tight fit , the sound was good but not as good as the JLab Executive Headset. After using it during jogging, there was a decent amount of outside noise . Some of it was from a loss of fit and some of it was from a lack of noise cancellation. In a quiet environment, the sound is powerful and rich. In the real world, not so much. Answering calls is okay to hear but seemed to lose a bit on microphone pick up of my voice. The Epic Spot earbuds come with a case but when you cram the headset in the case, it loses some of the shape that you creatde for a good fit and you have to start over. All that JLab’s had to do was make a bigger case.
So what is my overall impression? This is a hit and miss headset. It is built well and has great features on paper. However, the overall fit is troublesome and the lack of noise cancellation makes the sound inferior to the Executive version of this headset. Sorry JLab, I’d take a pass on this one for a non sport version or look to JLab Epic Air’s instead.

Great value and feature rich.

Projectors have come a long way in the past 10 years or so. Gone is the day of the hot bulbs with low brightness on high priced heavy machines. The Epson EX3260 exemplifies the trend of smaller, lighter and brighter. This projector has low cost but multiple connectivity options, good colors and excellent brightness. However, the first thing to remember about the Epson EX3260 is it is a solid business class projector, it is not designed for home theater. The projector is perfectly competent for presentations and standard videos - the text is clean, bright and readable under most conditions. It is not high definition and you will definitely notice it if you play movies. You have your choice of 5 connectivity options. Yes, 5. There are ports for HDMI, USB, S-video , component and the standard SVGA connector. There is a 6th option for wireless connectivity but you need to purchase the adapter. Included in the box is a USB cable and VGA cable but no HMDI. I tried all three options and all worked . However, there was some judder when playing video through the USB. I probably would only use that option as back up. There is a speaker but it is very weak an only designed for smaller rooms. At the $450 list price, I consider the Epson EX3260a good value and recommend it.

Vibrate your way to clean teeth
on March 25, 2018

from Farmingdale, NY
This is my first try of sonic toothbrush. I’ve had the rotating bristle designs before but felt they never did anything more than manual brushing. This is not the case here – the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 rechargeable toothbrush definitely does an incredible job. However, after my first use, I was not sure if I was able to continue using it. I have sensitive teeth and gums and the vibration was too much. Since then, I have gotten used to it and appreciate the fine job it does. I can see this being a problem for some people though. If you have sensitive teeth, you may want to look at the more expensive Sonicare tooth brushes ( 6100 and up) that have multiple modes and intensities. It does the job for me but if I could, I would have spent the extra money on the ones with multiple modes. In summary :
Pros -
Does a great cleaning job.
Powerful.
Very long battery life.
Well built
Cons -
Small brush head
One mode and intensity.
Overall, I recommend the 4100 albeit I would recommend the 6100 even more simply for the other modes and intensities. For such small device, it is powerful and does a great cleaning job. A note on Philips products overall, I've owned various shavers and trimmers all my life , they were always quality. This toothbrush is no different.

Another solid product from Linksys
on March 19, 2018
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Farmingdale, NY
The Linksys RE9000 range extender is not new technology. What is new is many of best features of today in one compact package. I could list all the technical specs but you can see that in the product specifications and other reviews. Most people could not tell you the difference between MU-MIMO and a muumuu and in the end, it does not matter. What people are concerned about is does it do the job, will they like it and does it make sense for them. With that in mind, here are some key points :
The setup - It does not get any easier. The extender supports WPS ( Wi-Fi Protected Setup.) Simply plug the router in, wait about a minute until the lights flash green press the WPS button on your existing router ( if it has it) and press the WPS on the Linksys RE9000 range extender. It will connect, set up an extension of your existing network with the same password. The whole process took 3 minutes. In the event you do not have WPS on your router, there is a web based browser set up. There is also a Linksys app called Spotfinder that lets your locate the optimal position for the extender.
Core physical features - the foot print of the unit is about 8 inches by 6 inches with four 5 inch antennas . Not big at all. It has 4 WAN ethernet ports so you add any hardwired device to your Wi-Fi network. I thought that was a great feature and 4 is better than most of the mesh network range extenders out there ( this device is not a mesh device per se.) I loved the extra ports because my ISP routers ports are all used.
Performance - I live in an apartment. It is not big but I have issues with network performance due to the construction of the building. The biggest issue is I have security cameras on the outside of building that are wireless and I constantly have problems with latency and connecting. With the ranger extender that all went went away. Additionally, I found I could go hundreds of feet to the other side of my apartment building and still get a decent signal. Interestingly enough, even with the range extender left in the same room as my router; I still noticed better throughput on the far side of my apartment ( there are several apps to test that.)
So is it worth it? In many cases yes. If you have an ISP provided router or have a newer top line router but have dead spots, definitely. If you have your own router that is over a couple of years old and lacks today’s technology - probably not. At that point, you are better off putting the money towards the top of the line Linksys max stream routers . They will give you all the performance and more features. At $170, Linksys RE9000 range extender is not cheap but is priced about where it should be. Overall, I have always liked Linksys products. The first router I ever bought was a Linksys and they just make good products. In terms of features, function and benefits, the Linksys RE9000 range extender is well worth it. Recommend - 5 stars.

Great idea, maybe some issues.
on March 18, 2018
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Farmingdale, NY
I’ve used just about all types of antivirus and anti malware software but this is my first test of a hardware based protection system. To just call a hardware based antivirus/antimalware system does not do it justice. Think of it like an enterprise level firewall and router for all the devices in your home - mobile devices, pc’s and all connected devices ( including IoT devices such as cameras, locks even lights.) It is an impressive idea in a small package. Key points :
Set up -
The set up took me less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Very simple and straight forward. I did not like that it can be only set up from a mobile device but this is the way of so many vendors these days. Regardless, I liked the approach of the setup. You have 3 options, use your router from your ISP and clone your network, use your own router and install it as a bridge device or install it as standalone router with it’s own network. I chose to use it as a standalone router with a newly created network. I would not recommend it as your only network, I chose this option as a way to connect to a secure network for my PC’s. There is some network latency when this device is installed so I prefer to have a network for gaming and a network for my PC’s ( where my most sensitive data is i.e. Banking etc.)
Operation -
Once everything was installed, the app began discovering the devices I had connected to the network. After some odd behavior , everything ran smoothly. For some reason the app required I reboot my Mac before it listed it as secured ( I did it twice.) It also did not discover my Ipad until I backed out of the app and went back . I can tell you I have Bitdefender antivirus installed on the devices so maybe that had somehting to do with . Not sure , it is a minor quibble anyway. A major issue , which I have not be able to isolate, is that my Mac kept disconnecting from the new network internet and I could not reconnect. My Ipad worked fine but I have only been able to reconnect a few times after I waited a while. After a few minutes, I would lose internet. I would normally think it was my computer but since I can connect to my other networks with no issues, I think the issue is with the Bitdefender Box itself but I cannot tell.
Performance -
As a router, it is meh. It is AC1900 spec so it should be fine in most applications. It is MIMO with a 3x3 antenna array and dual band 2.4/5GHz. If you do not know what it means, it is not important in a buying decision. What I did see was average performance as a router with slight throughput degradation the farther I got away ( line of sight.) I live in an apartment and the contruction is tough on wifi. Once I got outside or in the far corner, I did see a drop. Not terrible but I can see a large home or older plaster/brick home causing some issues.
As a protection device, it is unbeatable. Obviously I could not test all malware, phishing and virus attacks but there are several websites that you can test various types of attacks and nothing got by the Bitdefender Box.
Overall , I like the idea but it is hard to get by that my Mac kept dropping the internet. I tried restarting, disconnecting and reconnecting and other tests. All were to no avail. I cannot say definitively it is the Bitdefender Box and I have not been able to test it on my other PC’s as yet. I like the idea and the design. In my opinion, it should never be used as your primary network, the router is just average and I am not sure the performance will be on par with ISP and your own router ( the Bitdefender Box only has 1 WAN port.) What I do not like is the cost, at $250 plus $99 per year after the first year, it is getting pricey for what you get. If I were Bitdefender, I would make a full feature router with multiple ports, a better radio and a lifetime subscription. Charge more for it, but make it so it blows the competition away. I am going to give it 3 stars based on I could not get it work properly on my Mac, the router and the cost. Hard to recommend because of my issue but don’t let my one experience sway you. Based on it being a security device alone, it is 5 stars. If you have security concerns, give it try.

Big sound from a little speaker
on March 16, 2018
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Farmingdale, NY
Another bluetooth speaker , just what the world needs. Maybe. So what does the Sony SRS-XB31 offer that is different? It has all the top features you would expect in today’s speaks - bluetooth, NFC, micro USB charging, waterproof and dustproof etc. Let’s take a look at the performance and some of the features :
LED lights - The SRS-XB31 has multi-colored LED lights that sync to the music. Yawwnn. Sony and other manufacturers - when are you going to realize that people do not care about it. Yes some people may like the cool factor for about 2 minutes and then totally forget about it. This is nothing but a battery waster in my opinion. Changing the light pattern is annoying, it is done through the app. You have to first select the light style you want and press done to see the new light pattern. A better design is to cycle through the light patterns as you select them. I just turned it off in the app. To each their .own I guess
Sound - There is a lot of sound coming out of a relatively small speaker. Out of the box, the speaker is set to extra bass. It definitely has a lot of bass, in fact too much for my liking. Luckily, you can change that through the app or a a series of button hold downs. In the app, you have three options for the sound - standard, extra bass and live sound. I found the extra bass a bit too much and a little muddied and the standard mode just has no life to it. The live sound worked the best with most of the songs I tried, this mode gave the best sound out of the speaker. To refine it further the app has an equalizer. Nice.
Build - this is one solid speaker. It is stated that it is waterproof and dustproof. Of course, I did not test that but I believe it. It is not too heavy but does have a very solid feel to it.
Unique features - you can chain together multiple Sony SRS-XB speakers ( up to 100.) Nice feature if you want to fill up a room with music. The Sony SRS-XB31 is Google Assistant and Siri compatible. It has a 3.5mm audio in and a USB port to charge any device ( as in if your phone runs low, you can charge it.)
I own the Sony SRS-XB20 and this Sony SRS-XB31 is an order of magnitude better. The sound, the controls and overall features are just better. This is not the best sounding speaker I have ever heard but it is very good. Sony keeps refining their speaker line and it shows. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Another solid product from Jlabs
on March 15, 2018
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Farmingdale, NY
The JLab Epic Executive Wireless headphones offer good sound and a rich feature set for $100. You can read about the full features in the product description but I will highlight some of the core features, functions and benefits. Key points -
Active noise cancellation - You rarely see active noise cancellation on a $100 headset but Jlab's manages to it in an affordable package. It does work to a point but is not great. I can definitely hear a difference for background sound but I also hear this slight hissing sound. You can turn the noise cancellation off if you like. I did find in a moderately noisy environment, it did the job for phone calls.
Fit - the package includes 6 different types of ear tips, a neckband and cush fins. I spent more time trying the different options to get the perfect fit than any of feature. I did settle on the soft foam inserts that mold to your ear. They definitely offer the best fit and block out sound.
Unique features - this includes a 3.5 mm adapter for traditional connections. You can use it on any 3.5 mm connection on planes or similar.
Voice assistant compatible - Google Assistant and Siri compatible
Sound - I liked the sound. I found the range to be excellent and clear. Bass was surprisingly good. I used this on a VOIP application and it was great.
Water resistant - the Jlab Epic Executive Wireless headphones have a nice rubberized coating that is water and dust resistant.
Overall, I like the headphone. Clean design, decent sound and a great fit. I have had many Jlab products over the years , I have never been disappointed and typically offer a better value than higher priced alternatives.

HDMI upgrade?

I currently am running my HD TV's with HDMI connections made about five years ago. Will those cables be able to support this TV or are there newer cables that must be used on these 3-D 4-K models?
The short answer is maybe. There are 4 types of HDMI cables ( for the most part.) High-speed with or without Ethernet and or without Ethernet . For 4k televisions, you should use high speed only ( it does not matter whether they are ethernet capable.) High speed cables have been around for over 5 years so you may already have them. If you do need to buy new cables, go for the least expensive high speed cables . There is no difference in performance between a $5 high speed cable and $100 Monster cable ( up to about 20 feet.)
