There's little to say here. SpongeBob SquarePants was fantastic in its first few seasons. This set includes the entire first season (minus the pilot for legal reasons) and is exactly what it promises to be: The first season of SpongeBob.
Admittedly, it would be nice to have the opening and credits for each episode. For whatever reason, the opening is only on the first episode of each disc and the credits are one giant track located elsewhere on the discs. It's just odd.
Extras are fine. Honestly, if you want this set, you don't need convincing. Just buy it already!

Honestly, as far as Miyaziki goes, this is one of his best. It's up there with My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. It easily eclipses Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo. Many people don't even seem to realize this exists, sadly. It seems as though people are hailing The Wind Rises as his first adult film. That's simply not true. Proco Rosso, with its themes of regret, love, hope, optimism, and even redemption, is really Miyazaki's first adult film. It's fantastic and worth checking out.

This is actually the third one of these I've bought. I like it, and it stores a decent amount of DVDs and Blu-rays well enough, but I don't really like how fragile some of the wood is when screwing the back on. In addition, the lack of any sort of holes in the wood when screwing the back on is a bit frustrating. Still, this thing works.

There's not much to say about the films. After all, anyone who wants to buy this clearly enjoys the films. There's not much to say there.
The transfers on these discs are exactly the same as every previous release. WB just used now disc art for this release. That means that the aspect ratio switches during both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. That seems to be an issue for some people. In addition, the transfer for the Dark Knight still looks questionable. The picture quality is way better during the IMAX shots on that one. WB really should do a new transfer of The Dark Knight. The variable aspect ratio is great. The look of the picture, however, isn't.
The new bonus disc really isn't worth the purchase if one already has an earlier release. The discussion between Nolan and director Richard Donner is entertaining. It's also fascinating that Donner's Superman film influenced Nolan given the fact that Nolan's films in general are so dark and dreary, while Donner's Superman is really the opposite tonally. The feature on the impact of Nolan's trilogy if fine. It's way less back patting and self congratulation than one might think going in. It's actually got some decent behind the scenes footage and insight into the making of the trilogy. The IMAX scenes in their true aspect ratio probably won't interest most people. It's nice to see, but most people likely won't care.
As for the packaging, it's really big. The book which houses the discs is designed to with the disc art in mind. Essentially, the disc art completes the image on each page. It's a nice idea, but it just seems sort of uninspired. The photo book is just that... a book of photos from the making of the film. Honestly, most of these images are likely easily found online. The letter from Chris Nolan is exactly what it sounds like. Finally, there are small reproductions of the vehicles from the films. They're fine, but not really anything special.
All in all, this isn't much of an upgrade. Stick with a standard edition of each movie.

Season 9 of the supernatural series begins with the fallout from heaven's angels descending to earth. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) suddenly find themselves living in a world that is now inhabited by thousands of powerful, angelic beings, some of whom want them dead. The brothers then embark on a journey to reopen the gates of heaven. Meanwhile, Castiel (Misha Collins) struggles to survive without his powers and embarks on living as a human; Crowley (Mark Sheppard), the King of Hell, is kidnapped by Dean in order to find demons on earth; and Abaddon (Alaina Huffman), the Knight of Hell, reappears with plans to take over hell once and for all.

More of the same... in a good way

To sum up the show, while it's not as good as the first five seasons, this was still entertaining. This season is easily better than six and seven (seven is, by far, the worst Supernatural has to offer) and is about on par with eight. Can't wait to get ten on DVD.
As for the discs, the show continues to have a decent set of extras. There are three commentaries. All three are fairly informative, and all are entertaining. The sixth disc features a nice set of featurettes on the Men of Letters and are pretty interesting. The 2014 San Diego Comic Con panel was a fun treat. The gag reel is much of the same in terms of gag reels. The best feature, however, is Behind the Scenes of Supernatural: A Fan's Perspective. Created by Misha Collins, it's incredibly funny and shows off the cast and crews good natured personalities and that they can poke fun at themselves. It's a real treat.
Great set overall!

Nice release for a solid entry in the X-Men series

Wow. After The Wolverine, the franchise needed a movie like this. As a movie, it's a solid, well made adventure with great ties to previous X-films and shouldn't be missed by fans.
As a disc, it's also good. The bonus features, while not as meaty as the extensive extras from the original trilogy, are decent. The deleted scenes are a nice treat as is Singer's commentary for them. The interviews are somewhat informative and entertaining. The only real complaint is the lack of any sort of commentary. Singer's commentaries on the first two X-Men films are solid. They give a nice glimpse into the world of film making and the choices the creative team made. There's nothing like that here. That'd be nice to hear about. Still, it's an enjoyable release for a solid film.

There's not really much to say about the movie. Anyone who's a fan of fast cars and thrilling action will enjoy the movie. The key thing with this item is the case. As a fan of nice collectibles, the SteelBook is nice. While there's no interior artwork, it still looks great on a shelf... especially next to the other five movies. Here's hoping the next film gets a similar release!

Interesting Reboot of a Beloved Title

It's been almost 20 years since the original Ghost in the Shell film was released theatrically. Since that time, there have been other animated entries in the franchise. In general, they've all been pretty solid. Admittedly, Oshii's original film is a bit dull and... well, soulless, but it's still a beautiful film. Its sequel (Ghost in the Shell: Innocence) is equally beautiful, but it actually manages to be more entertaining despite being equally dull. The TV series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and its sequel Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig are far more entertaining and are certainly high water marks of the anime medium. With gorgeous animation and character designs, a stunning score, an impeccable dub, wonderful scripting, fascinating character development, and some genuinely funny humor added in, Stand Alone Complex is amazing. That said, where does Ghost in the Shell Arise fit in?
Well, it's certainly entertaining. On some level, it's better than the original film. It certainly isn't brooding and dull. On the other hand, the substance is a bit lacking. While the original film is a trite dull, it manages to ask fascinating questions about what the soul truly is and what the value of life is. There really doesn't seem to be much of that in Arise. Compared to Stand Alone Complex, it's okay. Honestly, the crime procedural aspects of Stand Alone Complex are really some of the best procedural work ever seen on TV. The mysteries are genuinely engaging and at times, there's a personal element to the cases which ties into the team. That's effective story telling that allows the characters to grow and develop while telling a fascinating story. Arise attempts this in both episodes found on this set, but it just doesn't pan out as well. Perhaps that lies within the more obvious nature of the mysteries.
That said, Arise is no slouch. It manages to entertain. The new dub cast is solid. The music is certainly different from previous Ghost in the Shell works, but it's still good. If nothing else, it's fascinating to see how the team came together in this reboot. That should be the most fun.
As for the actual release? It's solid. The picture on both the Blu-ray and the DVD is solid. Sadly, the subs are locked on the Blu-ray. It'd be nice to turn the subs on during the dub to compare to the two. The discs have a nice wealth of bonus features. There are some Japanese trailers and interviews along with the US trailer, a dub commentary, and the usual selection of FUNimation trailers. Also included are two booklets with character models, info on characters, creators, and more. There's one booklet for each episode.
All in all, it will be interesting to see where this OVA series ends up... and where the franchise will go from here.

Honestly, I bought this on a whim. I felt that I should give it a chance, and it's a fine show. I'm not in love with it, but I do enjoy it more than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That show just missed the mark in every way. This is just kind of fun. I'm curious to check out season two, so I think that says something.
On the bonus feature side of things, it's fine. It's mostly behind the scenes features, but they work. The one on the stunts is entertaining. The gag reel, however, is not even remotely funny. It's kind of a shame.
All in all, the show is worth checking out.

This release from the cult hit animated action-comedy series Adventure Time includes all 26 episodes of the show's fourth season, following the story of Finn the Human, a boy with a taste for danger, who inhabits the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where he engages with fantastical hilarity with his friend Jake.

Solid release of a solid show!

Anyone reading this review probably knows what to expect from Adventure Time already. After all, if you want to buy this, you're likely a fan to begin with. There's really not much to say in regard to the show. If you're a fan, you know what to expect from it. This season has some of the strongest (and strangest) episodes.
On the bonus feature front, we get the standard commentary tracks. If you've been listening to past seasons and their respective commentary tracks, you know what to expect. I will say that I feel like these commentaries feel a bit more focused so far. In the past, they've really been off topic and just kind of uninformative. That isn't so much the case here. Perhaps my standards have lowered, though. Still, they're worth a listen. If nothing else, Rebecca Sugar's a good commentator.
The other feature, "Distant Bands," is a great treat. Creative talent discuss the show's music, its theme... and even... well, check it out for yourself. One hint, though: Boy bands and Pen Ward.
Overall, it's a solid release. Can't wait for season 5!
