solid but not quite perfect

the good:
* Excellent camera (color day/night) - Crisp, clear images even at a distance.
* Bright/dimmable lights - The 2 lights articulate (up/down and rotate) separate from each other, with well designed clamps to secure them in place. The lights are super bright on full, and the ability to dim them is a nice touch.
* Motion detection - Motion detection worked well for me, and has configurations for sensitivity levels. Motion can also be configured to send an alert, start recording, and/or sound the siren.
* Scheduling and profiles - The scheduling of profiles is a nice touch. For example, one profile might be "work" where you want only motion triggered siren and alert. After work you might want "home" where it's just motion triggered light, but alerts and sirens are disabled automatically. Yet another might be "bedtime" where security is at its highest, with motion triggered light, sirens, and alerts. All of these can be easily set up within the app.
* 2 Way communication - The ability to converse directly to someone through the camera is a nice touch.
* *LOUD* siren - Just like the light intensity, the full volume of the siren is quite powerful. You can also turn this down within the app.
* Viewing angle - Nice wide angle, able to cover about 95% of my entire back yard.
* On board video storage - Monthly subscriptions are not necessary. There is enough on board storage for about 14 days of videos, and they are also synced with your phone.
* Install was easy and straight forward, and the included power cable essentially means that you could, in theory, not need an existing electrical connection to use this light.
the bad:
* No Apple Homekit integration - The biggest issue I have with this floodlight is that it has no Homekit compatibility. I'd love to just raise my wrist, speak into my watch, and say "hey siri, turn on the backyard light". The fact that that you have to leave any connected light switch on means that you can't exactly turn it on and off light a generic light, so this would've been a really nice touch.
* Lack of apple watch/widget - Similar to the Homekit integration, a lock screen widget or Apple Watch complication would've been nice to see as well. As it stands, going into the app itself seems to be the only way to switch the light on and off.
* Notifications outside of the app (email, text) would be nice to have.
misc:
* App is just ok. In comparison to others I've used, it definitely appears to be on the new side. I wouldn't call it bad or lacking anything major, just not exactly clean or intuitive where everything is laid out.
overall:
Overall this is a really solid camera from Anker. I've used their products quite a bit in the past, and this feels just as well made as the rest of them have. Just a few things keeping the Eufy Floodlight Camera from being top notch, but hopefully these issues will be ironed out as the product matures a bit. 4 stars.

leader of the pack

the good:
- power - Wow! Finally, a handheld that can rival the suction power of a full size corded vacuum. There's always been a bit of a trade off in cordless/handheld vacuums when compared to their full size counterparts, but that no longer seems to be the case with the V11. Between that and the full size cleaner head, you're really not having to compromise at all.
- battery remaining readout - Instead of looking at the battery for a 3-2-1 lights power remaining, now you actually get a time estimate. You can also directly see the effects of the different suction modes on battery life, which change dynamically as the mode changes.
- removable battery, extra battery and charger included - Double the cleaning time with the included battery and charger. Just like a cordless drill, you remove the spent battery, click on the new one (which you can charge separately with a second included charger cable) and you're good to go.
- large canister - The waste bin canister is massive, especially compared to other cordless manufacturers, but even previous "V" models.
- auto/manual switching of suction mode - Different suction strengths for different types of surface. These can be set to auto or manually managed. For me in my household of both tile and carpet, the spring shedding of my 3 dogs was no match.
- attachments to essentially make it a "handheld" for smaller spaces - As with all of their previous V models, this comes with a ton of attachments for different types of target cleaning. They can attach to the longer tube, or directly to the canister to make it somewhat handheld. I say "somewhat" because it is still quite large because of the canister itself.
the bad:
- price - Some may balk at the high MSRP. Others may think it's completely worth it.
- canister size - Some may be put off by the physical size of the upper canister/handle area and weight.
misc:
- extra battery and charger has no stand - Even though the included extra battery and charger is a nice touch (I wouldn't really call them 'free' at this price point) there's no place on the hanger to store them. It would've been a nice touch to expand the holder for this.
- attachment space on the hanger - Another nitpick, but I've always wondered why the hanger doesn't have enough spots for all of the included attachments.
overall:
Overall this vacuum is probably at the front of the pack in its class, in most if not all categories. If you're looking at Dyson, then price probably isn't the biggest factor. If you're not dissuaded by its cost and you need heavy duty cleaning, the V11 fits the bill nicely.

GX brown switches are excellent
on February 3, 2020
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- design - Aluminum alloy looks fantastic, understated in a good way. Design is compact for a full size keyboard.
- switch feel / activation - I personally love the GX brown switches. There’s a very slight tactile bump, but the actuation is at the top of that bump. It almost feels like a linear switch, but faster. I’m able to use this as my daily driver for both gaming and work, without sacrificing any speed.
- USB passthrough - On board USB port is a nice touch.
- included “gaming” keycaps and puller - Essentially the left side of the keyboard, these keys are actually a different shape on the top that allows for easy identification without necessarily looking down. They’re shaped like a little valley, which aids in finger placement.
- quiet - For a gaming keyboard, there really is no keyboard “clickiness” to it. It’s not dead silent, but the number of people I’ve had complaining about my keyboard being heard over the phone has gone down to zero.
- compatible with G Hub, which is Logitech’s light and key mapping software. Super customizable, from lighting to key mapping.
the bad:
- none
misc:
- no volume knob - A personal pet peeve of mine, I prefer using a volume knob to adjust the volume of my system. This may bother some, others won’t care.
- palm rest not attached - Some keyboards in this price range offer a magnetized connection between the palm rest and the keyboard, which would’ve been nice here. As it works out, the palm rest does stay in place very well, so it’s not a huge deal.
- key lighting visibility below the key - It appears to be by design, and is by no means a deal breaker, but the lighting effects are visible below the key as well as the actual keycap top. Some won’t care about this, some may be annoyed.
overall:
Overall this keyboard is a very solid entry for Logitech. It looks and types great - understated but fully functional and customizable. Easy 5 stars for me.

no major changes, still a solid keyboard case
on December 26, 2019
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- overall design and build quality - Feels well built with quality materials, with some hard plastic and some “grippy” matte material. Classic design.
- keyboard - layout and travel. It’s of course smaller than a standard keyboard, but the layout is the same. No oddly placed shift or arrow keys to deal with. Key travel feels decent for this type of keyboard, so I had no real issues getting used to it and typing accurately on it.
- secure fit / protection - The case does seem to offer up a fair bit of protection for the iPad itself, though that may not be its intended design.
- dedicated function keys - The dedicated “Mac-centric” function keys are a nice touch: media control as well as search and command are nice to see here.
the bad:
- thickness / weight - Really my only somewhat nit picky complaint about the case is the thickness. For a device as thin and sleek as the new iPads, it is a bit of a shame to put a case on it this thick. Logitech doesn’t seem to have put any research into making these cases thinner, as it looks essentially the same as my old iPad Air 2 case.
overall:
Overall this is a very solid case in my opinion. A bit thinner and lighter and it’d be an easy 5 stars for me. As it stands, I’m taking off 1 star for overall size, but that in no way detracts from the quality and usefulness of it.

solid home theater in a box
on November 30, 2019
Posted by: bd43274

the good:
- sound quality - This was a tough one to characterize for me. The sound quality is quite good, certainly beyond what their small size would suggest, but for me there was something missing. I did some A/B listening tests placing these on top of my favorite bookshelf speakers, which are quite a bit bigger. Highs were very similar, which is to say they are quite good. What I eventually realized was that mids weren’t missing, but just a bit “thinner” than what I’m used to. That being said, after listening to these for an extended time you probably wouldn’t notice. Very nice spatial presentation of instruments, ultimately only showing the limitations of a small speaker cabinet at higher volumes.
- design - Very small and stylish, with quite a bit more sound coming out of them than you’d expect.
the bad:
- sub clarity - The single biggest weakness for me with this set. I found the sub to be somewhat muddy, which is much more pronounced in higher sub frequencies. There’s certainly plenty of power for its size, but it still sounds like a separate oomph oomph instead of just the lower frequencies of one cohesive sound. I suspect they saved a bit of money on the subwoofer driver/voice coil with some materials that produce a slower response, contributing to the muddiness.
misc:
- In terms of balance, mids could be more present, but this may not be a huge issue to most listeners.
overall:
- Overall, this is a solid offering at a decent price point for MartinLogan. Mids and highs are tight and accurate, with mids being slightly recessed to my ear. Low end is strong, albeit a bit on the muddy side. At full MSRP I’d give it a 3.5, but since it’s currently on a pretty good sale it's a fair value. 4 stars.

great battery life, decent sound
on November 26, 2019
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- battery life - Rated at 8 hours, plus 2 additional charges via the case. Definitely at the high end for this type of wireless earphone.
- comfort/stable - I found these pretty easy to forget I was wearing them, which to me is a good thing. I don’t want to be messing around with my headphones while I’m trying to jog or workout.
- waterproof - Nice to not have to worry about rain or sweat.
- loud - While not necessarily the best audio quality, certainly plenty of it.
- easy to use, tactile buttons
the bad:
- sound quality - Is this as good as other “high end” brands as far as sound quality is concerned? Not at all - but then, I don’t necessarily thing that’s what it’s aiming for.
overall:
For what they are, these earphones aren’t that bad, but unfortunately their weakest point to me is actually their sound quality. If all you’re looking for is something that won’t fall off your ears while exercising, but also doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, then these may work. At their full MSRP I would give them a 3 pretty much on sound quality alone, but if you can find them on sale (as they currently are here at Best Buy) I’d bump it up to a 4 - a relatively solid pair of earphones with great battery life and resistance to the elements. Charge them once, throw them in your gym bag, and you’re likely set for the week or longer.

good on paper, less so in practice
on October 28, 2019
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- sleep tracking seems to be accurate and very detailed
- app is well designed and intuitive to use
the bad:
- comfort. For me, the single biggest negative here is that I simply cannot sleep while wearing something like this on my head. The size adjustment clasp is on the back, preventing me from laying on my back. The upper forward part of the “helmet” has sort of a bulge to it, making it difficult for me to sleep on my stomach. Ultimately the only way to get my head into a comfortable position left my neck somewhat twisted and awkward. Over a week’s time I tried every different position, and none offered anything more comfortable.
- sensor stickers - I’m not sure why, but because of the use of disposable sensor stickers, which of course you have to purchase after you go through the included ones (30 are actually included, which is nice) this ultimately feels like a subscription service model to sleep. I know I’m nitpicking here but for something so expensive, to have to continue paying after the fact for stickers leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
- I personally didn’t notice much of an improvement in my sleep quality, admittedly probably mostly due to fitting/comfort issues.
overall:
I’m sure this will work well for some people, just not for me. The headband seems well constructed and the app is good, but ultimately I don’t think I can personally continue to wear something like this until it’s less intrusive physically.

Enjoy powerful bass in a minimalistic design using this Sonance cabinet subwoofer. The crossover control offers a clear transition of bass frequencies when connected to your main speakers for smoother bass response, while a ground lift switch eliminates most ground noises to minimize distortion. This Sonance cabinet subwoofer features a textured finish and black cloth grille for added durability.

fantastic sound in a small package
on October 1, 2019
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
Normally for this kind of review I’d make a bullet list of the good and bad qualities. Whenever I look at a products reviews, that’s the first thing I look at, to see what kinds of things people complain about and look for patterns and constant areas of complaints. I’m not going to do that with this review. The positives are more difficult to put into individual points, so I’ll just give you my impressions and hopefully it'll give you a better idea of how this sub performs.
When I started listening to this sub with a critical ear, one thing stood out to me that I think might be throwing people off when they listen to it: it doesn’t sound like a stereotypical “subwoofer”.
What I mean to say is, it’s not a melt your face off rattle the room boom boom type of sub. It’s much more nuanced than that. It’s not the best sub for every type of music, but what it does well it does *really* well. To me, it actually sounds more like a bass cabinet than a sub at times. Meaning if there’s a bass guitar playing in the music you’re listening to, the extension and quality of sound actually sounds more like an actual bass guitar than a sub. It’s a subtle distinction, but it’s there none the less.
To say that I’m impressed with this little sub is an understatement. Proper placement and crossover settings aside, it pumps out clean, punchy, and accurate bass for all genres of music.
the bad:
- It’s not not in any way flashy or “look at me” in terms of design. Is that a negative? I suppose some might interpret it that way. Very plain and utilitarian design.
Other than that, really no negatives for me, certainly not in the price range.
misc:
- While it’s punchy and powerful, it is what it is…meaning it’s a 10” sealed box. You get a little more volume and a little less accuracy typically in a sealed enclosure. They’ve done a good job of mitigating that here in my opinion, but physics unfortunately just won’t give you crazy low extension with a 10” sub. That being said, it does punch well outside its weight class in my opinion though.
overall:
I personally haven’t heard anything comparable in this price range. In fact, quite the opposite. At this price point mostly what you get is the big boomy inaccurate bass. Sonance has knocked it out of the park with this one. Easy 5 stars.

king of (carry-on sized) portable speakers
on September 18, 2019
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- sound quality - Talk about bang for your buck. I don’t know if I’d bill this as a PA system necessarily, but it definitely has that and/or karaoke capabilities. Where it really shines is volume - super loud for something portable. I don’t think anyone will confuse this for an “audiophile” system, but that’s not really what its intended use is. It’s great for portable tunes outside by the pool, or throwing in the back of the truck for a camping trip. It’s got plenty of volume and clarity, and coupled with its durability and battery life it’s pretty much up for any situation.
- build quality - Beyond sound quality, this thing appears to be made to take a beating. It is essentially the size of a smaller carry on, complete with telescoping handle and wheels. It reminds me of those indestructible cell phone cases. Over-engineered to withstand bumps, drops, and some water resistance as well.
- battery life - Rated at 75 hours, which to me is a bit on the crazy side. So far it hasn’t disappointed. i’ve charged mine once, been playing it on battery for a few hours daily for almost a week now, and I’m still showing all 4 bars of charge.
- 2 USB ports for charging devices - A nice touch here, to be able to use that big battery as a charger for external devices as well.
the bad:
- really nothing.
misc:
- inputs - If I had one knock against it, it would be that the inputs are somewhat limited, only bluetooth and aux in (3.5mm jack). That being said, that’s probably fine for most people. I would imagine that most people will connect their phones via bluetooth to play music. There is also an included microphone and mic input for PA or karaoke.
overall:
Overall I think this is a pretty great speaker for what it is, and a decent price as well. Easy 5 stars for me.

you need this in your life!
on September 15, 2019
Posted by: bd43274

The good:
- texture - To me, this is the single biggest surprise with this little appliance. Before I tried it, I was literally picturing heating my food up with a hair dryer, but I couldn’t have been further from the truth. For example, say you have some leftovers that you’d like to reheat, something like fries and chicken tenders. Using this little guy you can throw them all into the “pot”, turn it on and let it go. Give it a good shake after 4-5 minutes to evenly distribute the heated areas, and give it another few minutes. Afterwards, you leftovers no longer taste like leftovers. The difference between reheating in the mic or oven is night and day. I’ll admit, I haven’t done a ton of food from scratch in it, which I understand is excellent in and of itself, but leftovers and frozen foods turn out fantastic.
- flavor - Certainly not sacrificing anything here. One of my favorite things about fried foods are the crispy “bits” that you get, and you certainly get that with this air fryer as well.
- speed - From placing the food in to actually eating, it’s maybe not microwave fast, but it’s not much slower.
- clean up - Wow. Non-stick of course, but typically my cleanup on this takes about 2 minutes. Let it cool off, rinse it out, and it’s pretty much clean. Maybe a dab of soap and a soft scrub brush, but overall couldn’t be happier with clean up.
- health benefits - Fried food without the grease? Wouldn’t have believed it was possible until I tried it.
The bad:
- nothing
Misc:
- Relatively decent sized footprint, about the size of a coffee maker. For some this may be an issue if you’re tight on counter space.
Overall:
Couldn’t be happier with this fryer. Seems to be well made, puts out great food, quickly and with easy cleanup. Easy 5 stars for me.
Pro tip - use this for bacon! I’ll never fry bacon in a pan again. No more flipping, grease popping, hot spots, etc. from using a pan. Bacon in this thing is fantastic, evenly cooked, and cleanup is super fast.
