strong performing budget projector
on November 5, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
the good:

- picture quality - Probably the biggest draw of this projector in my opinion, the picture quality at this price point is outstanding. 4k media from either included Android TV or via hdmi connected Apple TV looks quite good. At 2800 lumens you're certainly not suffering for brightness, and although it won't compete with its big brothers in terms of contrast and black levels, for big screen lovers on a budget, this should fit the bill quite nicely.
- on board android tv - technically not "on board", rather included via a dongle connected to a second hdmi port, covered by the projector housing.
- small form factor - Relatively small, quiet, and unobtrusive.
- lens shift and keystone adjustment (although using these features does affect picture quality to a certain degree)
- Gaming - Some others have reported negative experiences gaming, but I saw no issues. I connected my PS5 and was up and running immediately. SDR gaming is good if not great, although to get higher refresh rates you do have to move to 1080p. For some this won't be an issue, for others it will be a deal breaker.
the bad:
- HDR gaming - I found that HDR gaming to be a bit lacking in color depth and detail, which is surprising considering the 2800 lumens this projector is capable of. The picture appeared washed out in darker scenes but better in brighter ones.
- contrast ratio/black levels - I think these are the 2 main culprits of my negative HDR gaming experience. Not so noticeable for media viewing (TV and movies, etc.), gaming seemed to highlight these as weaknesses.
- simplified (lack of?) menu settings - The epson settings menu is a substantially smaller version of the typical menu set, and I found no gaming-centric settings.
misc:
- remote control angle -The remote control here is a bit confusing. You have to pair it via bluetooth (which I think actually pairs it to the Android TV module) but then the projector portion of it seems to be RF, with a very small port on the projector. The result is basically you can hold the remote in any orientation for Android TV, but to control the projector itself (settings, input change, etc.) you have to point it *directly* at the RF port. This took some time to figure out. I happened to have an Epson remote for another projector and it worked with a significantly within a significantly wider field. Not a huge deal.
- manual lens adjustment - Again, not a huge deal for most, but something to consider if the projector is mounted on the ceiling.
- lamp based projector - Has a relatively short lifespan (4500-7500 hours) , especially when compared to higher end laser projectors.
- built in "speaker" - This speaker seems unnecessary, potentially useful for maybe a conference room setting? I'm not really sure. You certainly would not use it in a home viewing setting.
overall:
This little projector is by no means Epson's top of the line offering, but that being said it still manages to perform well above its price point. Picture quality for media is quite good, crisp and with good depth of color, but gaming in HDR suffers a bit. Contrast and black levels could be better, but for this price it is a strong contender. 4 stars.

Chances are you’ll run out of energy long before this powerful LG CordZero vacuum does. Kompressor technology compresses dirt and dust so you can keep cleaning instead of stopping to empty the dust bin. Two rechargeable, detachable batteries deliver up to 120 minutes of uninterrupted cleaning performance. The one-touch control makes cleaning a breeze, and a portable charging stand lets you store and charge anywhere, anytime. Even maintenance is easy, with removable, washable filters and cyclone system and ThinQ App Wi-Fi enabled monitoring.

well designed and thought out offering from LG
on September 15, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
I'll preface this by saying this review doesn't live in a "vacuum", pun intended. I have had a few of these stick vacuums over the years, and they've mostly been the same brand, probably the most popular brand in the category. That being said, that manufacturer should be paying attention, this LG is a more than worthy competitor, and is better in some ways that may just prove to be the tipping point for many consumers in the market for one and doing a direct comparison. As such, most of my review points are going to be a bit of a direct comparison to the LG's more expensive competitor.
pros:
- build quality - Better build quality than what I'm used to. The components feel sturdy and well made, certainly well thought out and engineered. It's very obvious that the team at LG saw something on the market and didn't seek to reinvent the wheel, only to make it better.
- adjustable height - How novel, a telescoping main tube that you can slide back and forth, depending on your height and comfort level?
- "kompressor"/filter clear switch - This is a really cool feature. Use this external switch to push an internal ring down inside the filter, sort of tamping down the contents. Helps to clear the suction area and to create create more capacity. Akin to pushing down the trash when it gets full so you can fit more in, only significantly less gross since here your hands don't get dirty.
- floor stand - Also a nice touch, the included floor stand let's you have a bit more freedom over where the vacuum is stored, though it is still attached via power cable. Nice to not have to drill into the wall unless you actually want to though.
- button operation (instead of trigger) - Not the biggest of "pros" of course, but operating via button (including multiple levels of suction per press) instead of a trigger.
- 2 batteries included, removable - Another win for this model in my opinion is the inclusion of 2 *removable* batteries, and the ability to charge both at the same time - one in the vacuum itself and the other cleverly tucked away in the stand. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 hours on the lowest setting and 15 minutes on the highest, it's very easy to switch to the other battery to keep things moving (and continue to charge the other battery without missing a beat!)
- suction - All other technology aside, it actually does a fairly good job of cleaning both carpets and hard floors. It is, however, still a stick vacuum, and while good for day to day cleaning, probably not the deepest clean you'll get. Larger pieces of mess (we have birds at home that make massive messes with seemingly entire giant pieces of nut/seed/what have you) aren't always picked up on the first pass.
cons:
- no smaller hand held roller at this price point - While it is cheaper than some other manufacturers, I still would've like to have had the smaller roller brush, for pet hair on couches and similar messes.
misc:
- wifi/app connection - I'm not sure how useful this will be, but there is the ability to connect via WIFI and get the "status" as well as cleaning log. Probably not something I'll use a ton.
overall:
There are quite a few options out there in this category, but this is definitely one of the stronger ones. Easy 5 stars for me.

great buds for android phones
on September 7, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
the good:
- sound quality - Sound quality for these is actually surprisingly good. (I'll save sound *signature* details for below). Details are crisp and clear, with strong but not overpowering bass. So then how could sound be good but tuning be bad?
- design - I love the super slim matte black design of these. Great for throwing into your pocket when on the go.
- ANC - While not necessarily up to Apple or Bose standards, still very good in my experience.
- charging - both wireless QI and USB C
- call quality - In my testing, call and mic quality is quite good and can be used as daily drivers for Zoom, Teams, etc.
the bad:
- tuning - If sound quality is good, then how could tuning be bad? This is, of course, a matter of personal taste, but for me the sound signature is lacking. Sound stage (where instruments sound like they are in relation to each other) is mostly non-existent...everything is basically crammed up inside your head with no space between the sounds. In addition, the highs, while admittedly sound great, are a bit too forward and fatiguing. It is possible to use EQ to tune some of this out, but it can't be changed completely.
misc:
- iphone vs. android use - As expected, these buds have some additional features when connected to an android device, which i did not test. i tested with an iphone, but with an android phone supposedly you get all of the fast switching/easy pairing etc that you get with say, apple airpods and an iphone. with my testing on an iphone, they are simply earbuds.
- battery life - These things are tiny even with the case, so it doesn't surprise me that the battery life isn't amazing. They are in line with other buds of this size though...5-ish hours on buds alone, another 5-6 charges from the case.
- contols - The controls aren't bad by any means, pretty standard for buds. My only issue is that they, seemingly like every other bud on the market, are super easy to hit when simply adjusting them during use. Not a huge deal, more of a nit-pick.
overall:
A solid entry from Samsung, these buds aren't perfect but do more than compete with other similar entries in the market. I would put them on par with Apple airpods pro, but certainly not up there with the likes of Sennheiser momentum buds in terms of sound quality alone. 4 stars.

outstanding air fryer with tons of capacity
on August 30, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
Let me preface this by saying I'm no expert on air fryers. Ask me about computers, audio and theater components, I'm in my realm. Ask me about kitchen appliances, I really only know things from a very basic level. Does it work? Was it easy? Does the food taste good, or was it more of a pain to use than it's worth? Ultimately these are the only questions I really ask, mostly because they're the only questions I care about when it comes to prepping my own food. First world problems I know, right?
That being said, we do cook a lot in our household between myself, my wife, 2 little girls and my mother (God bless 'em, I love all my girls!) Sometimes the only difference between fast food and home cooking has been our air fryer. Now, don't get me wrong...some will try to tell you that this is the same thing as proper oil frying. It is not. What it is, however, is close enough without adding a ton of extra grease or oil (saturated fats) to your meal. It *won't* give you the exact same taste and texture of deep frying, it is pretty close, and of course without the mess of traditional frying as well. It's also a heck of a lot better than baking most items.
For me, air frying typically falls into one of two camps:
1 - Cooking frozen foods which are meant to be either fried or baked. Things like frozen fries, tots, fish filets/sticks, chicken nuggets/strips/dinosaurs etc.
2 - Reheating leftovers.
In my experience so far, this air fryer exceeds my expectations in both camps. Chick-fila get cold by the time you got it home? Reheat the nuggets and waffle fries for a couple minutes and we're back to just-like-fresh taste and texture. Need a quick dinner for the family? Throw on some fish filets or chicken breasts in one and veggies/fries/potatoes/whatever in the other. The possibilities really are endless, and of course this particular one gives you the real estate to cook more and the separation of the 2 pots to control them individually.
Overall, my experience with this air fryer so far has been quite positive, though I will admit I'm not using some higher tech features it touts (Air Fry, Air Broil, Roast, Bake, Reheat, and Dehydrate all in one!) As simply an air fryer, I feel it is more than worth it. Only you know if you need the capacity this provides; if you do, this is a great choice. Well designed with a relatively small footprint, tons of capacity and control with the dual cook zones, and a solid brand to stand behind it. Easy 5 stars for me.

slim, light, powerhouse with sleek styling!
on August 22, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
the good:
- gaming specs - Seriously impressive specs, and tuned well by Alienware to perform at their max. Current (12th) gen CPU, Nvidia 3070Ti, M.2 SSD and 16GB DDR5 memory - all of these are maybe one level down from top of the line, but still *very* capable, providing a fast and smooth experience whether using the included 1080P display or powering an external monitor. In my testing, this laptop beat all others I've tested via Geekbench so far (including an Apple M1 MBP by quite a large margin). In fact, it beat all of the other desktops I've tested as well, with the exception of my close-to-top-of-the-line custom i9 gaming rig. Very impressive!
- physical design - Alienware has come quite a long way in their physical design, perhaps because of competitors which have become slimmer and lighter. This latest design direction is significantly better in my opinion, keeping the "alien" futuristic aesthetic but in a much thinner form factor.
- keyboard - The keyboard feels nice with good travel and backlight, while not being overly "gamer" RGB. It feels maybe more like "classy" gamer than flashy lights gamer. It depends of course on which you prefer, but this feels geared toward a potentially more subtle crowd.
- display - Outstanding display - big, clear, bright and super fast (360Hz refresh rate), along with the GPU that can take advantage of it. If I had my choice I might have preferred QHD instead of FHD, but for gaming this looks and performs top tier.
- fans - Very quiet under normal operation, lesser so under heavy load (but still not as loud as some jet engine fans I've heard - I'm looking at you Intel i9 Macbook Pro...). Good thermals thanks to the quad cooling design.
the bad:
- speakers - The speakers sound just "ok" for laptop speakers. neither horrible nor would you want to use them if you had almost literally *any* other option.
- ports - The port selection is again just "ok" here. One USB-A, one USB-C, and one thunderbolt. The full size HDMI 2.1 is nice, but you'll more than likely need either a dock or some adapters/hubs. Probably a bit nit-picky, but still something to consider.
misc:
- battery - It's a gaming laptop, and using so much power with the CPU/GPU during heavy loads is never going to allow a current technology battery to have more than a few hours capacity. The best option for these machines is to keep them plugged in if you're gaming for more than a short session.
overall:
- Overall this is a fantastic gaming laptop, light, sturdy, attractive design with some serious internal processing power. The small faults are not enough to detract from it's overall quality in my opinion. 5 stars.

outstanding security with tons of access options
on July 22, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
Lockly Vision Elite
pros:
rich feature set - A smart lock for the technology age, the Vision Elite is a well thought out solution. It includes several ways to securely unlock:
* pin code with randomly revolving sets of numbers (which makes guessing a pin code essentially impossible by position)
* "offline" access codes (which you can manage from the app) granting temporary access. Perfect for things like air bnb, contractors, guests, etc.
* 2 physical keys, just in case every other method fails (power outage, battery drained, 9v backup battery unavailable, etc.)
* eBadge - send someone digital access via the Lockly mobile app.
* fingerprint scanning - My personal favorite, and especially useful for families. No one in my family carries a physical key anymore. We all use the biometric fingerprint scanner to unlock the door. From the manual, it appears to be quite secure and difficult to fake, but is also quite convenient.
robust construction and design - The deadbolt itself feels sturdy and of high quality, and physically is well designed.

software - The mobile app is intuitive and well thought out. Controlling the features, adding/removing codes, viewing the logs, all very easy to do with the Lockly app.
autolock - Also configurable, you never have to worry about locking your door again with the autolock feature. Enable, disable, and set the time to lock in the mobile app.

2 rechargeable batteries included - Instead of having to purchase and swap out batteries, the Vision Elite comes with 2 rechargeable batteries and a USB C cable/charger. Very nice touch!
solar trickle charging - While I have been able to test this feature directly, there is a small solar panel on the front (covering the physical lock) that is intended to keep the battery charged. Very cool feature, if it actually does work!
logs locks and unlocks - The app logs who locked or unlocked the door, based off of code, fingerprint, or manually from the inside.
doorbell type camera with night vision and motion detection - While not quite as capable or fully featured as a dedicated doorbell camera, still a potentially better view of those at the door.
9 volt battery backup terminal - If the battery dies and you don't have a physical key, there is an 9v battery terminal where you can connect an external battery to temporarily power up the lock and gain access.
cons:
no apple homekit integration - For those who are entrenched into the Apple ecosystem, this would've been a nice inclusion.
at times the screen is a bit "finicky" - In my initial setup I did have a little trouble getting the screen to show up, to be able to enter my code. I have not seen this issue since.
misc:
setup can look overwhelming at first - With the included instructions, templates, and what seems like an over abundance of parts and wires, the installation may seem daunting at first. It's actually quite simple, especially so if the dimensions of the door and holes are within spec, which mine were. If they aren't, there are included templates to aid with an admittedly more complex situation, but even so there are guides and videos to help.

needs base station (included) to communicate via wifi - Similar to things like Phillips Hue or Lutron smart switches, a base station is needed (included) to communicate with the lock over wifi.
overall:
Overall I really like this lock. Aside from a few nit picky cons, it is a very strong contender in my opinion. I'd say it's just shy of 5 stars, but in light of this rating system I'll round up. 5 stars, highly recommended.

solid little daily cleaner
on June 23, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
The good:
- cleaning - While I wouldn't say this as strong as say, a shop vac, for daily usage and messes it actually does a pretty solid job. My household has 3 dogs and 3 birds, and all the mess that comes along with them. It's so nice to just be able to grab this little vacuum and tidy things up so we're not living in a pig pen.
- battery - As long as I'm not spending a ton of time on one spot, the battery life has been decent in my testing. I've always had plenty of power to do all of the downstairs main areas and then some - kitchen, living room, dining room, etc.
- ease of use - No cords and no external battery to deal with. Just pick it up off the charger (assuming it has solution) and it's ready to go. The roller pulls it forward, which aids in moving it (think self propelled lawn mower) but then also adds a scrubbing motion when you pull against it. Super light weight and easy to use.
- charging stand - Though it does sit a little strangely balanced on the charging stand, I really appreciate being able to just pick it up and go. The base is also the shape of the bottom, so if there's any dripping it doesn't hit the floor.
- included - extra rollers, filter cleaning solution and cleaning tool
The bad:

- audible messages - I found these to be a bit on the frustrating side. Difficult to understand when the vacuum is being used, and multiple "please clean dirty water tank" multiple times, even after it was removed and cleaned. Not exactly "bad" per se, but there aren't many negatives with this vacuum.
Misc:
- app - Not really sure what this is for.
- smell - Just like any wet vac, it will start to smell if it's not cleaned and left to dry regularly.
Overall:
Overall I think this is a solid wet vacuum. Because of the menagerie that is my house, it sees constant daily use. I would not consider it a "biggest best clean" solution, but as a daily driver for keeping a constantly used area clean it does a pretty solid job in my opinion. 4 stars.

a mixed bag
on May 16, 2022

good
- current gen i7 - relatively snappy, supports Windows 11 and typical workloads with no problem. Similar performance numbers to the Apple M1 Pro chip, which is to say very good.
- RTX 3060 GPU - Again, a strong choice for GPU. Current gen, good FPS. My testing put it just below an RTX 2080, which was NVIDIA's second most powerful GPU a generation ago. Very solid.
- compact design, handle on top
bad
- 16GB memory - This is somewhat low for a Windows machine, which is not as efficient as a Mac in its memory usage. It's enough for typical gaming, but at higher workloads memory may be an issue. It is upgradable however, with 4 total slots available.
- 512GB M.2 drive, 1TB HDD, no second nvme slot - The intention here is likely to keep games on the "data" drive, a spinning hard drive, which is relatively slow compared to the M.2 drive, which is quite fast. You'll certainly lose a few FPS by doing this, and at this price point I would expect at least 1 TB.
- price - The current price is a bit high, in my opinion, for what you're getting here. The CPU and GPU are very solid, but the rest of the components are certainly budget minded.
- relatively small internal CPU heat sink and fan, one large fan for the GPU. Components may run hotter than they should, but fans will certainly run at higher RPM (read: noise) than they would otherwise.
misc
- "gamer" RGB - For those interested, there is a bit of RGB lighting, a stripe on the front and some internally visible through the side panel glass/plastic.
- very little space for upgrades
- comes with Windows 11 home (not pro - no remote desktop functionality)
overall
Overall it's not a bad machine, certainly some strong points with the CPU and the GPU. At its current price point I feel it's just a tad under performing with the other components though. It's a solid, if not great value at the current price. 3 stars.
For anyone interested, benchmark scores:
Geekbench CPU - single core 1769/ multiple core 11014
Geekbench Compute - 97181
Cyrstal Disk Mark M.2 - read 6000+MB/s / write 5000+ MB/s
Crystal Disk Mark HDD - read 207MB/s / write 197MB/s

not perfect, but solid choice
on May 6, 2022
Posted by: bd43274
good:
- cold - This little unit pumps out come cold air. I am currently using it in my home office and it does a fantastic job of keeping the entire room cool, even with all the tech in that room that produces quite a bit of heat (router, modem, desktop, etc.). I live in Phoenix, and this unit keeps me from having to keep the rest of the house icy cold just so I can try to keep cool in a warm office.
- remote - The remote seems to have all the same function access as the front panel, which is super convenient.
- smartHQ app (built in wifi) - The SmartHQ app (and of course built in wifi) are a nice touch, though I do get the impression these features aren't quite ready for prime time. Still, when they do work they are very convenient, having essentially the same functionality as the remote and the front panel. Maybe you want to set the temp on your way home, before you get there? Unfortunately there's no scheduling ability, but assuming you're cooling a small-medium sized room, it won't take much time to cool it off.
- relatively compact - Relatively small footprint for how much cool air it pumps out.
- washable filter - No expensive filters to purchase. Outstanding!
bad:
- noisy - I do find that it's a bit noisy, though the benefits far outweigh that. I measured about 60dB on cool/low fan. The good news is it doesn't seem to get much louder than that, but that's enough to impact say, a Zoom call using the laptop microphone. I usually either put my ear buds in (which filter out some of the ambient noise) or turn off the AC during calls. Not a huge negative but worth mentioning.
misc:
- automatic "louvers" - When the unit is turned on, there is a little "louver" or sort of a directional fin which automatically opens and moves into position to push the air at an angle. It's a nice touch, my only concern would be that it's not the most durable of parts.
- included air vent kit - It's just "ok", but could be a little more robust. In my case, it didn't even fit my (admittedly larger but not huge) office window.
- cycles off and on quite a bit - I'm not sure if it's the actual temperature variance, but it feels like, in trying to keep a constant say, 72 degrees F, it will cycle on, run for 5 minutes or whatever, then off for a minute, then back on. It doesn't seem to affect functionality, but I do notice that the cooling unit cycles on/off fairly often.
- power usage (tripped breakers) - In my case, having my office all on one breaker, I find that I'm having issues with it tripping, especially if I fire up my PC with its power hungry GPU. The AC unit itself stays mostly at a constant 6 or so amps, but occasionally I'll see it spike up to around 9. Add this to the 4-5 amps I see from my computer when I'm gaming and it's not long before the 15 amp breaker trips.
overall:
Overall I think this is a pretty solid little unit, and it very much gets the job done. 4 stars.

Sure, it’s great for Netflix, the big game and the real housewives of wherever. But the U7G is made for the gamers. It’s got our exclusive ULED technologies, 4K resolution, Quantum Dot Color, Dolby Vision HDR, Full Array Local Dimming zones and Android TV operating system. On top of all that, we added a 120Hz Native panel for smoother, more fluid motion and HDMI 2.1, Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode for gaming. The U7G also has up to 1,000 nits peak brightness, which makes HDR ‘pop’ and means the picture is lit no matter how bright the room. All this looks great on paper. Now think how much better it would look on this TV.

the good:
- picture quality - Even without considering the price, the picture quality is quite impressive. Once you factor in the cost it becomes even more so. Of course 4k resolution makes for a sharp picture, but the VA panel and local dimming zones also add to the experience, providing deep blacks and great contrast.
- gaming features (120hz, freesync, low latency) - Ideal for both next gen consoles, it's equally adept with high end graphics cards. Ghost of Tsushima on PS5 looks fantastic and buttery smooth, as did Fortnite and Halo Infinite on PC.
- FALD (72 zones) - Again, at this price point 72 zones is fantastic. This provides for deeper blacks, but also tends to prevent the backlight behavior where a zone is significantly bigger than the colored portion of the image, causing backlight striping across the screen.
- HDR - good brightness with HDR content
- Thin bezel design
- Smart TV functions (Android TV)
- Two HDMI 2.1 ports at 120Hz
the bad:
- speakers are just "ok" - I've listed this under "bad" though I don't really consider it to be a major detractor. At this price and for this many features, internal speakers quality is a small price to pay, especially considering that most will use with a soundbar or external audio system.
- motion enhancement - Motion enhancement is always a mixed bag for me, and on this TV is no different. I personally disable for both TV and gaming content, and find that the picture quality is much more lifelike and natural.
misc:
- backlit voice remote - Nice to have, but in no way a deal breaker.
- up-converting lower quality content is just ok
overall:
Overall this TV is an easy 5 stars for me, certainly at this price. While it may be missing some of the bells and whistles of the higher end TVs, it certainly competes well in the areas it intends to.
