DJI Does it again - 5.4K Goodness!
on April 28, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
— Review from the perspective of an original DJI Mavic Air owner —
I am simply blown away at what DJI has been able to pack into the Air 2S:
- 1” CMOS Sensor
- 5.4K/30fps Video
- 4K/60fps Video
- 4-way obstacle avoidance
- Sport mode - up to 42.5mph!
- Mastershots
// 1” CMOS Sensor w/ 5.4K/30 & 4K/60 video
I can’t express how much difference this sensor makes over smaller sensors. The amount of detail that it can capture makes a considerable difference in image quality. I publish in 4K and what’s great about capturing in 5.4K is it allows me to “punch in” and crop the image if needed which allows for flexibility in composition.
// Mastershots!
Oh boy - Mastershots. This feature can create some amazing montages with nearly no interaction from the pilot. All you have to do is select the object that you’d like the drone to focus on, choose a duration of how much footage to collect, and then the Air 2S goes off an flys around the object in a combination of QuickShots (think like Dronies, Orbiting around an object, etc…) and once it’s done, it stitches them all together into a sweet montage. You can also choose different templates for the final output of the Mastershot. This is a very, very cool feature.
// Quick to Fly
One thing that can be intimidating about flying a drone is the set up time it takes to get it up in the air. After the initial set up is done, it’s very quick to get in the air and that’s partly due to the smartly-designed controller. The controller uses your smartphone as a display and your phone simply locks into place using a spring loaded bracket housed within the controller. There’s also a cable that's tucked away neatly under the bracket that conveniently attaches to your smartphone. All you do from there is unfold the drone and remove the gimbal guard, power on the controller and drone, do your pre-flight checks, and you’re off to the races.
// 31 Minute Flight Time
This is a lot of time to have a drone in the air. It provides plenty of ease-of-mind that you’ll still be able to get your shot without having to rush and have the paranoia of your drone running out of battery before being able to get exactly the shot that you want.
// Obstacle Avoidance
The Air 2S comes with forward, backward, upward, and downward obstacle avoidance and this feature works well in almost all scenarios. Small branches may not be recognized though since they can be thin, so just watch out for those. Large objects pose no problems though. However, just note that the Air 2S does not come with sideways obstacle avoidance sensors so be careful if you’re flying your drone sideways.
// Size
One of the few complaints I have is only because I am an original Mavic Air owner - it’s just slightly bigger than my original Air but it does come with lots more like that 1” sensor, more obstacle avoidance, and longer flight time.
// Fly More Combo - Just Get it
Don’t skimp and just get the drone by itself. The Fly More combo is well worth the money coming with a couple extra batteries, plenty of extra props, a very nice set of ND filters, and an extremely nice shoulder bag. The bag is a big highlight here - it’s a VERY high quality bag which stores everything in the combo kit just perfectly.
From the viewpoint of an original Mavic Air owner, I am blown away at how far DJI has come with this product. I wish it was as small and compact as the original Air, but with all the new features I’m happy to use the Air 2S to capture higher quality footage.

Capable home hub with great sleep tracking
on April 3, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
The 2nd generation Google Nest Hub is a great device that provides access to your smart home and can also give insights into personal wellness using the new sleep tracking feature.
The great thing about this device is that it comes with a host of features built all into one device.
It provides all the functionality of a Google Nest Mini or Nest Audio being a smart speaker that you can control with your voice and has all that Google Assistant goodness. With that, you can also play music through this device (Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, Deezer, Apple Music) and what’s really cool is that if you have more than one Google Nest Smart Speaker device, you can group them together to play music on numerous devices at once.
As a smart display, you can watch Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and a host of other video streaming apps on its 7 inch display, as well as display photos through Google Photos. It also provides access to your home video cameras if you have those set up, and these don’t necessarily need to be Nest cameras. I use Arlo cameras and they integrate perfectly fine using the Google Home app.
It has a touchscreen display but this is probably the only area where there could be some improvement…and I’m being a little nit-picky with this but it’s really the only thing I noticed that wasn’t amazing. Touches are responsive and tapping areas of the display work well but with swipe gestures, which generally switch screens, the display doesn’t keep up as well. When you swipe, it may take a moment before the interface actually changes screens. In general it’s not a big deal and it’s not like I use this device for lengthy amounts of time like an iPad but just don’t expect something as responsive as a tablet.
The newest feature which comes with this device is Sleep Sensing and this works very well. You’ll go through a short setup process providing some details about your sleep schedule which takes a couple minutes. And that’s it. It just automatically tracks your sleep from there providing you with how long you’ve slept, the time when you went to bed as well as how long you were in bed before you fell asleep, what time you woke up, if you woke up in the middle of the night, and then even more advanced stuff like respiratory rate, how many times you coughed, minutes snored, and the room temperature and how much light there was in the room. I compared these stats with a watch that has sleep tracking and it was astoundingly accurate. Very cool stuff and this information will also be synced over to Google Fit if you happen to use that app for tracking health and wellness.
For $99, I think this device is easily worth it since it packs in so many features all in one.

SoundLink Revolve+ II, the best-performing portable Bluetooth speaker from Bose, is engineered to spread deep, jaw-dropping sound in every direction. Place it in the center of the room to give everyone the same experience. Or set it near a wall and sound will radiate and reflect around the room, immersing you in that same feeling you felt at your favorite show. The tapered cylindrical shape with a flexible handle makes this wireless speaker easy to grab and go, while a durable aluminum body provides worry-free protection. And it’s water and dust resistant so you can keep the party going, even if it starts to rain. The rechargeable, lithium-ion battery plays up to 17 hours — for full-day listening. Voice prompts talk you through Bluetooth pairing, and there’s a built-in speakerphone for calls. Use the Bose Connect app to pair two SoundLink speakers for Stereo or Party Mode. The app also helps you manage your devices, unlock features, and access future updates. Available in Triple Black or Luxe Silver.

Portable, Immersive, Amazing Sound
on March 25, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
Sound quality is exactly what you can expect out of a Bose product - excellent. They chose the correct name with “Revolve” as you really can be anywhere around the speaker and the sound quality is excellent no matter where you’re at. Since sound comes out of the speaker from all sides, I find it sounds even better if you place it at least a foot away from a wall. When it’s right next to a wall, it still sounds great but it’s not as much of a 3D effect.
Clarity is amazing where highs and mids are extremely clear - I have a lot of speakers and can't think of another speaker with more clarity. I tend to like the level of bass response from Bose products. It’s very present and punchy but may not be enough for people who tend to prefer tons of bass. I have some speakers made by a company that rhymes with Bony which are super bass heavy which is too much for me and can sometimes sound muffled, just to give you a comparison. Bass never sounds muffled from this speaker even with bass-heavy EDM.
Portability is great even though this is a larger speaker. If you want more portability go with the non+ version of this speaker. The handle is flexible and works well. The texture is nice to the touch but that ribbed texture can trap some dirt.
The top and bottom of the speaker are coated in rubber which are nice and durable and haven’t shown any scratches or wear in a couple weeks of use. The centermost main portion of the speaker is metal which looks really nice and seems to be quite resistant to scratches.
The buttons on the top of the speaker are nice and responsive, clicky, and solid. Two nice touches is that the buttons are recessed which help prevent accidental presses and another thing I like is that the power button is just a single click to turn on or off - you don’t have to hold it down for a couple seconds like some other devices.
Minor cons are that I am a little surprised to see micro-USB and not USB-C on a new device being released in 2021. Also note that this is not a smart speaker like their Bose Portable Smart Speaker. They are similar speakers in terms of sound quality but this one just doesn’t integrate with your smart home - it’s just a bluetooth speaker (but you can also play music through the 2.5mm audio jack).
A great speaker!

Power AND Flexibility
on March 23, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
I have been a happy owner of a Dyson upright vacuum for many years but wanted something lighter weight and cordless with similar power and flexibility. Enter the V15.
/// Unboxing - Environmentally Friendly
One thing that I am super impressed by with Dyson products is the care they put into the packaging. There was not one single piece of plastic packaging - everything is made out of recyclable cardboard. I found two small pieces of tape to make sure some screws wouldn’t get lost, but that’s it. Everything else is intelligently designed where all the cardboard packaging holds the vacuum and accessories in place.
/// Modular Design
The V15 Detect is a modular system where there’s the main vacuum itself which you will use with the numerous accessories and cleaning heads. There are two main, large cleaning heads, and then another smaller cleaning head which they call a “Dyson Hair Tool”. There’s also an extension tube, a narrow nozzle, and 3 different sized smaller static heads with brushes on the end of each one.
/// Cleaning Heads
The two large cleaning heads are meant for hard floors vs carpeted.
The cleaning head for hard floors is what I think they call a “Laser Slim Fluffy” cleaning head. It has lasers! All kidding aside, the laser works really well in illuminating small dust particles on your floor that you may not see with the naked eye. Not a gimmick!
The other large cleaning head is meant for carpeted surfaces and they call this one the “High Torque” cleaner head. This head has a toggle switch on the front of it which allows you to pick up smaller vs heavier particles.
The smaller cleaning head they call the “Dyson Hair Tool” was great for cleaning fabric furniture easily being able to pick up any hair.
/// POWER
Being a cordless vacuum, it may not have as much power as a corded device but the V15 is very powerful. The real test is using the large cleaning head on heavy carpet and it works great. It doesn’t get bogged down and picks up debris you didn’t realize was even there.
It has 3 power modes to choose from depending on your choice of suction vs battery life and you’ll choose the mode with a button on the top of the unit and it’s indicated on the bright LCD screen. The Eco setting which is the most battery efficient is *incredibly* quiet while still being able to collect quite a bit of debris. The medium setting is what I use the most and this works well in most situations. The high setting is very powerful but also creates the most noise but it is indeed vey powerful. What’s great about all these modes is that it gives you an estimated runtime when you select a mode.
Also on that LCD screen is a display of the size of the debris particles it picks up.
/// Wrap-Up
The nice thing about the modular design combined with the cordless functionality is that this vacuum can not only clean your entire house but you can then use it to go clean your car, boat, or camper. Don’t let the “cordless” fool you into thinking this may not be able to clean properly - it’s a very powerful, intelligently designed device that I highly recommend.

Impressive Performance, Light, Thin, & Well-Built
on March 8, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
The first thing that impressed me about this laptop is the design and construction. It’s an attractive laptop that looks great without being over-the-top. This could easily be used as a laptop in a work environment without attracting a lot of attention which I tend to like. The quality construction is something that I just haven’t found in this price range - it’s extremely sturdy while still be quite light. The display hinge is very robust and the entire laptop does not flex much, if at all.
The display brightness and clarity also took me by surprise for a laptop in this price range. Although it’s only an HD display it’s very crisp and much better than most HD displays. The bezel surrounding the display is incredibly thin but that does come with a compromise - there isn’t a webcam.
I found the keyboard to be quite responsive and liked the key feel. However, being a 15.6 inch laptop, I feel that they may have been able to accommodate a number pad which would have been nice.
The trackpad is very good where tracking is very predictable and the click response is positive. I'm always leery of trackpads in this price range but it's very impressive, although could be a smidge wider.
The speakers are decent. The sound is very clear with more emphasis on mids and highs with less on the low end, but there is just a slight bit of hollowness to them at higher volumes. I also like that there are dedicated volume buttons and they aren’t just combined with the function keys.
Battery life is amazing easily being able to go 6-7 hours with normal usage - this is awesome to see with a laptop this thin.
Performance was very good for a laptop in this price range. I had very few dropped frames playing lots of different titles and the 144hz display is a joy to view.
Even though I mentioned a few shortcomings I am incredibly impressed with this laptop. It has killer looks, impressive performance, great I/O, and fantastic battery life.

Very Impressive and I'm a convert!
on January 20, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
I do lots of outdoor sports where hearing my surroundings is important for safety. My solution has been to use just one side of a pair of earbuds. But after using the OpenMove headphones, I’m a convert and I’ll be using these from now on for my outdoor activities.
The sound that comes out of these, for not being in-ear headphones. is so surprisingly good. It really took me by surprise how well bone conduction works. More on that in a second...
The controls are convenient enough to use. There’s a multifunction button on the left “earbud”. This button performs a lot of functions from play, pause, skipping songs, and answering calls.
On the right side of the unit, there’s a power button that also doubles as a volume up button, a volume down button, along with the USB-C charging port that’s covered by a little rubber door to keep sweat out.
If you press the volume up and down buttons at the same time, this changes the EQ and here’s where these earbuds impressed me.
The standard EQ is a good, general setting. Clarity is great for being open ear but there isn’t much for bass response. Again, these are open ear so there’s no driver into your ear canal. The vocal booster mode is great for content like podcasts. Then there’s an earplug mode. This is the mode that took my surprise. After inserting the included earplugs, this is the mode that delivers a surprising amount of bass. So you’d use this mode for situations where you actually don’t want to hear your environment and want isolation.
They are also very secure while doing activities like running, biking, and other gym-based activities. I can wear these for hours on end and they remain comfortable.
The construction of these headphones is very good. I thought for a $100 pair of headphones there would be some corner-cutting but these are constructed well.
Super impressed and highly recommended!

Efficient, Attractive, Smart, and Quiet(ish)
on January 11, 2021
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
I use this air filter to clean up the air and reduce dust in my office since I have many electronics - and it does this very well.
This high-volume air filter quite attractive so it fits in nicely and isn’t an eyesore. The construction is top notch - very solid and you can tell it’s high quality. The controls on the unit itself are hidden with panel on top which is allows it to function without any obnoxious lights if you were to put this in a bedroom.
At low to medium fan speeds (0-2) it is very quiet and hard to hear. At the high fan speed (3) it has some volume to it which could be an issue for some.
The physical controls on the unit itself are easy to use and also has a child lock feature that you can enable through the smartphone app.
You have to use the smartphone app to set up the device. Upon launching the app and pairing the unit, which worked fine, it then had a prompt that my filter was already expired. After closing and relaunching the app, it then properly said that I had 180 days left on the filter.
The app provides a lot of information about the air quality including different levels of air particles, tVOC, temperature, and humidity. Don’t know what tVOC is? I didn’t either but what’s great about the app is that it also provides information about each of the different sizes of air pollutants and the other data that it can collect.
Other than the volume of the fan at the highest setting and that odd bug with the smartphone app which initially said that my filter was expired, I think this is a good product.

Close Shave! And that’s a good thing!
on December 29, 2020
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
To get straight to the most important aspect about this device, it delivers a very close shave with no irritation.
Now on to the other things...
The blades are nice and sharp which produces a clean shave with no discomfort. The flexible head with 3 individual heads that move independently allow it to move across the curves on your face while providing broad coverage, so fewer passes are needed to avoid irritation.
You can also use this shaver in the shower if you’d like with any shaving foam or creams but I used this shaver primarily dry without any lubricants or water and it was still incredibly comfortable.
It also has a pop-up trimmer that you can use for cleaning up your sideburns or facial hair so it’s kind of an all-in-one package.
It’s incredibly easy to clean. All you do is just press one button and the head pops up and you just rinse it off with water.
This shaver does exactly what it’s supposed to do - highly recommended!

Attractive, Powerful, Simple to use
on December 1, 2020
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
This GE blender breaks the mold of boring looking kitchen appliances with an attractive, stainless steel finish that “blends” in nicely to any kitchen. I quite like how the design maximizes the footprint to get the most volume with the main blending container. It’s not as tapered as some other blenders, so overall, it takes up less space.
There’s really nothing to operating this blender - it’s incredibly easy to use. There’s a start and stop button and then a button for pulsing. You control the speed with an adjustable knob that has 5 settings.
The main container feels sturdy and well built. They advertise this as a 72 ounce blender but just keep in mind that the maximum liquid that they recommend is 64 ounces, so I thought that was a little odd.
To attach the container to the base, you rotate it and you’ll notice a subtle click, then it’s securely in place. The lid is very secure and has a rubber gasket so no liquids seep out. The top of the lid has two removable sections - one with 3 small holes and then a larger one for larger objects.
The base also has a nice touch with rubber suction cups that secure it to a smooth kitchen counter.
Great blender and I’m super happy with it!

The best Arlo gets even better!
on November 23, 2020
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
I’ve been a long-time owner of Arlo cameras. I started with the Pro 2, added on the Pro 3, and now am adding the Ultra 2s into the mix.
// 4K Resolution
The 4K video that the Ultra 3 provides is a noticeable difference from 1080p, and even the 2K from the Pro 3. 4K video may seem like overkill for a security camera, but if you want more detail with far away objects, I'd highly recommend it.
// Ultra-wide View
The ability to have 180 degrees(!!) field of view is absolutely amazing. This is by far one of my favorite things about the Ultra 2 vs the previous generation models that I own.
// Spotlight
One of my favorite features of the Ultra 2 (as well as the Pro 3) is the motion-activated spotlight. This is incredibly convenient when I arrive home at night, providing plenty of light, but I also like the fact that it can alert possible intruders that there’s a security camera in place. The light is VERY bright - much brighter than what I would expect out of a unit this small.
// Night Vision
Another nice feature for nighttime is the enhanced night vision which is kind of amazing for consumer-level technology, however I didn’t notice much difference viewing it with color or without.
// People, Animal, and Package Recognition
The Ultra 2 has the ability to detect people, animals, and packages and it’s very good at being able to distinguish between each of them. This is super useful for making sure that I retrieve packages as quickly as possible to avoid those pesky porch-pirates.
// 2-Way Audio
I wasn’t a fan of the audio quality from the previous generation Arlo devices that I own, but the audio quality seems to have greatly improved with the Ultra 2. The audio is much clearer and there is very little delay with the Ultra 2.
// Base Station
The Ultra 2 also has an improved range over previous generations using it’s smart hub that requires an ethernet connection. With a mesh wifi network, I am able to place cameras far away from the base station and connectivity never seems to be an issue.
Although this package comes with the base station, the Ultra 2 cameras are compatible with the base station that comes with the Pro 3. I had zero issues connecting the Ultra 2 cameras with the base station from the Pro 3.
// Battery Life
I haven't had the Ultra 2 long enough to test out the claim of up to 6 months of battery life, but with the Pro 3, which they advertise a battery life of 3 to 6 months, as an outdoor camera using the motion-activated spotlight, I was getting more like 2 months out of it. Although I hope to see improvements with the Ultra 2, 2 months really is still very good for all the features that it has.
I’m pretty darn stoked about the Ultra 2 system. It’s great on it’s own and I appreciated that it integrated easily with the previous generation Arlo devices I already own, so it’s not like I had to get a completely new system. Highly recommended!
