This is an excellent product that has simplified my life by combining the tools of the my laptop and iPad into one. I have also appreciated the Windows 8.1 OS.

can the device be used with a seperate monitor?

Yes, a second monitor can be plugged in via the mini-display port. One does need an adapter, though, from the port to VGA or HDMI.
