Fast data transfer speeds reduce the time used to copy large files, while the 256GB provides ample storage space for your favorite data. This SanDisk Ultra Type-C USB flash drive has SanDisk SecureAccess software, which helps you encrypt sensitive files easily.

Good for certain use cases. Not for others

Always on the lookout for new storage solutions (after-all, I can never have enough storage!) I decided to give the SanDisk Ultra 256GB USB 3.0 Type-C Flash Drive a try.
First, the drive itself is made of the usual sliding plastic enclosure. With such a (potentially) large amount a storage being on the drive, you would think that SanDisk would ramp up the physical protection of the drive. I get the feeling if it were dropped on a hard floor (thankfully my office is carpeted, and I am clumsy) that it might break or shatter one of the components. Why not metal? Or at least some sort of rugged polymer that would offer more protection? Oh well, it is what it is. Also, I can't see leaving this plugged in on a laptop that needs to be bagged, or even from a desktop that's in a heavily transited area.
Plugging this drive in since it's USB 3.0-C I was expecting blazing speeds. At least what it said it could provide (150Mbps) at a maximum. Heck, I would have been happy with 125Mbps. Testing on a windows 10 desktop I got an average speed of 75Mbps. On a Fedora 34 cinnamon desktop, the performance increased slightly to 85Mbps. Neither of which, obviously, came anywhere near the promised speeds.
Now to be honest about something that I think is a lot more prevalent than what the manufacturers realize. The first thing I do when plugging in a new drive is format it. This effectively wipes out any included software that comes pre-placed on the drive. The only time I use the included software is if it is a NVME or SSD "brand specific drive health" app. That's it. This would, at least one would assume, give the drive a "fresh slate" to perform better.
But, in the case of this drive nada. Thinking that maybe the file system was the culprit I tried various systems (NTFS, etc.). I again tested on both desktops. No cigar. Still well below the advertised speeds.
I was hoping to use the drive to install an OS to, to use as a portable setup. But with this performance, that would lead it to being impossibly sluggish.
HOWEVER. If you are using this drive to simply backup - say - some photos or other important items, and then throw (well, don't throw it) in a drawer... Then sure, this drive would be for you. But if you are expecting this to be a "daily driver" type of storage solution, no-way-Jose.
But one thing we all must remember is that flash drives (almost) always will underperform vs an SSD, NVME, or even some platter HDD's. So don't expect that just because the drive connects via a USB protocol that allows blazing fast speeds, that the drive will do so.
In the case of the SanDisk Ultra 256GB USB 3.0 Type-C Flash drive, it does not deliver blazing fast speeds, or even the speeds the manufacturer says it will.
Keep the above in mind. Especially the use case that you plan on using this drive for. For some, again, it will be just fine.
So, I can recommend it only for long term storage that you will disconnect and store somewhere safe.

Important part of any serious arsenal!
on July 15, 2021
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Bartlett, TN, USA
My first serious PC back in 1995 (hush) came with an APC power backup. My memories are that it was built like a truck, but that it would power things for 2 mins - make a horrendous noise, and would just cut off with no auto saving anything. Just *POOF*.
Since then, even with a pretty nice gaming rig (I7-7700, GTX-1070, 32GB of Ram and terabytes of internal and external storage) I never once considered getting another UPs. I just thought "Technology has evolved enough that a generic surge protection power strip is enough...."
Then I began to think of how nice it would be not to risk losing data from a power outage. Even better, how nice it would be not to lose internet during those times!
In comes APC!
This thing is just as heavy (at around 25lbs) as the one from the 90's. But that isn't bad. Just means it's got some decent cells.
Unboxing revealed the Back-Ups unit itself, the usual instructions, and a USB --> dataport cord. More on that later.
First order of business was to connect the "red" cell via a sliding case opening. Seemed fairly straight forward. Getting the case back on took some effort. But that's more on me than the product.
I let it charge for a couple hours.. But, I became too curious about what the Back-ups could handle and I couldn't wait any longer!
I definitely wanted to plugin my PC and monitor. That's a no-brainer. But then I began to wonder how much I could actually connect (and reasonably still have power in doing so).
PC and 2 monitors connected, turned on, and it was at a 10% load! Whoa! I'll say it again --> WHOA!
Now I got crazy. I plugged in my modem and router, along with some important external HDD's. The load now shows 20%!! I would plug more stuff in, but I ran out of outlets on the back (6 back up/protected plugs are available). There are an additional 6 surge protection only plug-ins. Along with coaxial and ethernet connections.
On the front of the unit is a USB-C and 2 USB-A power connections for phones and other items.
So I connected the dataport jack to a USB port on my main PC as I wanted to check that out.
I can now control various aspects of the unit via my PC! This is awesome! I have it set to run my pc for 5 mins, and then power down in the event of an outage. This, in theory would keep my internet connection and network drives up in the event of an outage! SWEET!
The only downside is the LED lighting. However, it is right at home next to my gaming rig (which has LED lighting on the front as well).
All in all, everyone who is either a serious gamer, or is serious about protecting their equipment (which should be everyone) should get the APC-Back-UPs unit. I'm ashamed I hadn't thought of connecting mine until now, and I'm amazed that nothing was ruined during previous outages! Phew! I bit the bullet.
But you shouldn't ever assume "it will never happen to me". But with the Back-UPs - it never will!

In search of incredible?
on May 25, 2021
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN

"In search of incredible" is marked on various parts of the packaging.
For those that want it simply (TLDR) - the search is over.
There are 3 main companies that come to mind that are out front when it comes to quality chromebooks. Asus of course is one of them. So I'm weird, and have through the years "collected" a couple from each company.
ASUS has nailed the chromebook in the C536EA model. With the I3, 8gigs of memory, and 128gigs of SSD space you have everything you need for a pleasant chromebook experience.
I was pleased to note upon opening the box that there was not a mountain of needless paperwork and cords. You have your power cord, instructions, and warranty.
Upon first boot, the C'book was at 98% battery power (more brownie points for ASUS). Who gets a new device and wants to wait before they can actually use it? One main system update later (the only one you have to "wait" on, as all future updates run in the background!) and we are off to the races!
Your google login is your chromebook login. It's that simple. Once logged in, any apps you may have used a/o settings are instantly transferred over to your brand spankin' new C'book.
The hardware itself - the touchscreen is very responsive. And the backlit keyboard is a nice touch as well. I noticed no problem with the touchpad. I found it very responsive, but not to the point of making any accidental moves. You have an HDMI port if you want to connect it to a TV or a monitor (I think I might have to try that) as well as 2 USB-C, and a "super speed" standard USB port for pen drives/etc.
The Harmon Kardon sound system is plenty sufficient for anything you can throw at it. Treble is well defined and the bass is punchy. Can't really ask for more in this format.
Everything loads extremely quick on this chromebook. Whether it is the browser, Android apps, or really anything. Of course this is not a "gaming rig", but your standard games from the playstore should work just fine.
Doing the "Tab Test", i opened 16 tabs before I began to notice any slowdown what-so-ever. And even then it was minimal.
Will chromebooks stay an attractive alternative to the "Big two" operating systems out there? I think so. For those that casually browse and just want something super convenient for everyday use, you can't go wrong.
And you certainly can't go wrong with this model. In addition to everything above, I forgot to mention - the exterior is a beautiful ivory white. Simply stunning!
Asus, my "search for incredible" is over!

In my efforts to convert the contents of my filing cabinets to digital form, the R40 seemed to fit the bill. Does it?
So, i've decided to go paperless. I initially started this project using my "3 in 1" printer/scanner. It took a while as I had to scan in the front and back of each document, convert them to pdf, join them, and then save them again. This was going to take a while. In comes the R40.
The beauty of the R40 is in its simplicity. Simply plug it into you PC via USB, install the included software, and you are ready to go!
A definite plus for me is that it scans both sides of the document at the same time, in color. In-One-Single-Pass!
Not only was I feeding the R40 standard letter size documents, but also receipts and ledger sheets.
The R40 scanned them all in perfectly! Not only that but converted them into searchable (OCR) pdf docs!
Now I am not dreading this giant project of mine. Oddly enough, I would say that seeing how many documents I can do in one session has become "fun". The included literature says it can scan up to 40 pages a minute - I would say that is pretty darned accurate (finally!).
And with the 60 sheet feeder, it makes it easy to do bulk batch runs.
If you are, like me, trying to reduce the paper clutter in your office, don't think (like I did) that using your flatbed, or printer scanner will get the job done. I mean it will, but it will take you a longgggggg time!
The R40 is what you need. It's what I needed!

Ok for standard use.

My previous experience with Samsung monitors has always been great. The 32" A700 comes a bit short. Perhaps I have been spoiled by IPS dispays?
The good first:
Very minimal bezel, and a "strap" to keep your cables tamed.
Windows instantly recognizes the monitor.
It's 4k
-
Bezels keep getting smaller and smaller. And the A700 series monitor is no different. Coming from the CRT days (giyf) - it blows me away how far we've come.
Getting more negative:
But at the same time, the differences in display technology when the industry should just settle on one - Twisted nematic (TN), Vertical alignment (VA), or In-plane switching (IPS), etc - baffles me a bit.
First this monitor is not IPS. IPS IMHO is the best of the best. And should be the industry standard. The A700 series is the ol' matte twisted nematic. And when I say "ol" - it is the original LCD technology.
Colors seem washed out, and too dark in brightness on factory settings. Bumping the brightness up to 100% barely helped. Thankfully my video card had additional boosting ability, or honestly this monitor would have been unusable for my use case (Gaming, and 4k video).
In addition, the "HDR", if we can call it that doesn't "feel" like true HDR. It looks like Samsung just made a color preset with very pronounced hue and color bleed. It made my head hurt, so I turned it off.
Other monitors with "HDR" do not suffer from this, and are a joy. So if you are purchasing this monitor with the "HDR" feature as one of the reasons to do so, don't.
In addition, there was some minimal assembly required to attach the monitor to the stand. Two screws needed for the install were hidden in the bag of accessories (HDMI and Power Cable). So well hidden, I threw them out. Luckily I found them in the end. This made me grumble quite a bit. Samsung should have taped them to the stand instead of inside of the bag.
Using the monitor for standard applications (with HDR off) seemed to produce less eye discomfort than comparable monitors.
And a final "pro" - not a single dead pixel, as are very common with these type of displays.
In the end, if you are buying this for gaming - don't. It won't live up to your expectations (unless tetris is your thing).
If you are buying this because of the HDR feature, don't. Samsung seems to have made their implementation of this technology very gimmicky - and doesn't feel like "true" HDR.
If however, you want a giant monitor for web browsing, business application, and videos on youtube - these would be the only uses I'd recommend this monitor to a friend for.
Is it worth the price for you? That's only something you can answer. But give it a try, or demo it in-store. You may have a use for it that I didn't or couldn't think of.

Holy Cow! A sexy monitor?
on April 30, 2021

First of, kudos to Asus. So many times, you buy a hardware component only to learn you need an extra part, or cord - when you get home.
Asus has provided everything you need in the box (IE: DP cable AND HDMI cable).
I love to game, but my monitors had a max RR of 75 at best. I have a quad monitor setup, and have been itching to replace my main monitor with one that has a higher RR. Asus, you sold me at 280HZ!
The unboxing and setup was super quick and easy. Pop on the stand, and tighten it on with the attached/included hardware (Yay!), insert power and DP - and I'm off to the races.
Well, not yet. You see you can overclock the monitor a bit to constantly hit that 280hz. This is all done by the easy to use navigation buttons on the back, right portion of the (very thin, Yay!) bezel.
My only heartache was that my monitors are all "4K". And this one isn't. Well........... Guess what? If you have a proper graphics card --- a GTX-1070 for example - it will let you push your resolution to 4K - even if the monitor doesn't "support" it. Could it be just some resizing trickery? Maybe. But to me the 4K looks better than my old monitor.
There are a ton of settings for FPS's, and all game types really.
I feel that my gaming rig has finally achieved the level of greatness it deserved to have.
The higher RR really shines with all games, and even every day applications. Side by side with lower RR monitors, you can definitely tell the difference. I may have to replace all the others now (don't tell the wife! Shhhhhh!).
All in all, this monitor can be summed up with one word: Sexy.
From its physical design, to the features it provides. I can not think of one single "negative" to point out in this review.
It's a monitor, and it Rocks! Asus, you've got this one down-pat. Good job!
If you are a serious gamer this monitor is for you. But be warned, you will be spoiled!

A bit touchy
on April 18, 2021
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Bartlett, TN, USA
Having received this item in return for a fair an honest review, I will try to put down my first impressions and a final use review.
First, I like things that fit into other things (a bit OCD). The packaging for the GO UV+ does just this, and everything has its place within the storage area which can be used when taking on a trip/vacation. Kudos to Raycop for that.
Continuing the last thought, the parts are easily identifiable and I didn't need to utilize the instructions to put it together. Kudos again to Raycop.
The product itself provides a respectable amount of suction. I used it to vacuum my keyboard, and desk. It picked up crumbs, dust, and other debris with no problems. And the debris is easily removed without having to touch anything yucky.
Now, if this were "just" a dust-buster, this would get an automatic five stars. What I have an issue with is the UV sanitizing function.
The sanitizing UV light will only turn on if the GO UV+ determines that it is a suitable surface. It would not turn on for my keyboard (which probably would have benefited the most). It also wouldn't turn on for portions of my glass-top desk. To me this is a handicap for the device. Instead of having the device decide, it would have been beneficial for the item to have a second button to have the UV lamp turn on and off. As it stands, it is one button operation. first click is to "arm" the UV light, second is to arm the UV light and provide mild suctions, and the third click is to arm the UV light and provide a higher level of suction.
Raycop claims that this item can kill viruses and bacteria. However, there is no clear verbiage in regards to how long the light should be placed over a surface to achieve this. I would suggest several slow "sweeps" over the same area to give the best chances for disinfection.
If taken at face value, and the item does kill these micro-organisms with moderate (4-7 second sweeps over a single spot) then it is worth it. The issue at hand, is the consumer has no way of knowing if disinfection has occurred or not. And again, the consumer has no way of turning on the UV light for items the product refuses to (like my keyboard).
I see value in taking this on business trips (or vacations). My only concern is that since this outputs UV light, and has a largish battery, if it could be taken inside carry-on luggage. I guess this would be a good question for the TSA? But, if allowed, the device - again fitting in its provided storage case could feasibly fit into such luggage.
On such a trip, I would definitely use it on hotel pillows, and bedding. Just for, well, reasons.
If it does what it says on the box. Then it would garner a 5 star review. But since there's no way to tell, I would at the least caution a potential buyer on that point.
This review is full of "ifs". And it is for that reason it gets 3 stars. And again I *would* recommend this to a friend with the above caveats.

Lives up to their slogan!
on April 9, 2021
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Bartlett, TN, USA
Here we have Earbuds being billed as "Mini and Mighty". The Skullcandy Dime True Wireless Earbuds are definitely mini in price. But are the sound quality and features mighty?
Something I have been waiting for, and I knew would be coming soon, wireless Earbuds that fill a void in the market. Prior to this we just had high tier-cost wireless
earbuds, leaving the budget tier either empty or, unfortunately, poor quality imported knock-offs.
For those familiar with the higher cost buds, these too come in a charging case where the buds "snap in" magnetically. Further, when used with the charging case I have averaged around
ten hours of use, give or take an hour. This is very good for a product the is billed to have 12 hour battery life. But there is a caveat. Every three or so hours you must place
the buds back in their charging case to charge. So the 12 hours (again, in my case 10-11) is not continuous "in ear" usage. Without giving away my full opinion too early, I must say now
that this is the only fault I can find with these buds.
Stepping back, the buds come with the above mentioned case. Also, a micro to *very innovative* USB-A charging cord. It appears Skullcandy understands all aspects of the market, including
the increasing reliance on USB-C. While this is not USB-C, the plug leaves no room to guess which way is the right way to plug it in to your USB port. I think this is a particularly nice
touch on the part of Skullcandy.
Also included are additional sized earpieces for a perfect fit for any ear. And in doing so, ensuring an almost "noise reducing" effect.
So, how do these stack up to the high cost-tier brands?
First, the sound-quality. I find it crystal clear with both music, and voice. Well defined highs and lows are noted. Either bud can be used solo as a blue-tooth phone mic combo. Upon
mentioning BlueTooth, it must be said these are very easy to pair. Much more-so than the high cost-tier brands. They paired perfectly with my S21+ phone and tablet.
A feature in the more expensive buds, which I always found fascinating and innovative is the ability to use touch gestures. Surely, a budget pair of ears had to skimp on this and not include it? Not so!
In fact, I find the touch gestures in the Skullcandy buds to be more intuitive than the other brands! Included in the box is a fairly detailed "Do this to have this happen" set of instructions for the gestures. You can do everything from pair, change volume, power on/off, and much more.
So these earbuds "tick all the boxes" when it comes to being true to their slogan "Mini and Mighty".
It will be interesting to see how the market continues to evolve to bring high quality, budget priced earbuds to the consumer.
But, until then, you can do no wrong in getting the Skullcandy Dime Earbuds! Most importantly you won't break the bank in doing so!

Great Upgrade
on March 28, 2021
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Bartlett, TN, USA
My current provider's speed tier offering that I was paying for (400mB/S up, 20mB/S down) no longer was supported by the Xfinity provided modem. I learned this, actually when I was setting up my AC3200. Imagine my surprise!
My setup currently is a modem, and a mesh system for my house which is rather large. I keep the main units upstairs in my office. My master bedroom is the farthest point from the modem.
Going into this, I assumed that I probably would need to keep my MX mesh system up and running. I tested the AC3200 WiFi capability. Sadly, it failed the master bedroom distance test.
So I re-enabled my mesh system.
I kind of got ahead of myself there. The modem itself was ridiculously easy to setup. Once plugged in, I attached my a laptop via ethernet. I then went to the proper Xfinity website, and wam-bam my modem was authorized and working without having to talk to, or chat with an Xfinity agent. Yay! (I was dreading that part the most).
It was then that I noticed it stated my old Xfinity modem was not supported "for the speeds you are subscribed to".
I immediately ran a speed test. Prior to this, on my ethernet connected desktop I was averaging 250mB/S down and 18mB/S up.
I was pleasantly surprised by the results! 478 down 25 up! That in itself was worth the upgrade.
The Motorola unit itself is sleek. It's not TOO big. In fact it's about the same size as the old Xfinity modem, if not a tad bit smaller.
The icons on the front are easy to read and identify. And are multi-color (blue and green). Not annoying at all like the Xfinity unit display.
Since I am using a mesh system running on a subnet (192.168.1/24) I had no need to test the app since I turned the units WiFi radio off. I did however install it, and the registration process was very simple.
I am experiencing a noticeable speed increase in my wireless connections also - hitting the 300's down, and the 20's up.
The control panel offers many more settings than the Xfinity modem. I love being able to control every facet of my internet connection, including security and VPN. Motorola has all the covered. While there ARE a ton of features, each is given a hyperlink to describe the setting. This will keep less advanced users from borking their settings.
The ease of use, the form factor, and the speed of the ethernet connections gets this 4 stars. If I could give it 4.5 I would. The only reason it doesn't get 5, is that it failed the before mentioned master bedroom test. But, again, since I have a very capable mesh system, this is a non-issue.
The biggest plus to this modem? It will save me $168 a YEAR in rental fees from Xfinity!!!!!!!!!!!

Surprisingly Good!

With my upstairs audiophile grade setup I always equated soundbars with those "home theater in a box" products.
So, initially I thought to myself with a smirk "Yeah right, a sound-bar that will pass the ear test".
The Dali Katch One QUICKLY removed the smirk from my face.
Before we get into the nitty gritty, I love options. I love connection options, sound options, placement options. The Dali pretty much, except for one passes all of these tests.
The majority of this review was performed using the Dali connected via HDMI ARC to my wall mounted TV. However, Optical (TV, and aud), Aux and Bluetooth are also available. See? There's one of the options checked off already!
I seemed to get ahead of myself there. The aesthetics of the Dali can be summed up as: simply elegant but unassuming. The white on white (grill, nice touch!) fits in with pretty much every decor. More so than the usual black/black bars that are in abundance.
Dali also gives you options when it comes to placement. You can either mount directly to the wall with a leather strap type hanger. Or, you can mount the included "feet" to use as a free standing soundbar. Another option checked off!
I went with the foot mount, and the process was very simple.
Now, onto the sound. It's obvious what Dali had in mind. They wanted to offer great sound without a million options to achieve it --- uh-oh (sort of!).
There are basically two sound modes. One, and Two. One (Focus) being tuned more for movies and dialogue, and Two (Wide) being more for music.
I tested mode one with a 4K Blu-Ray Disk of a recent production. Dialogue was crisp, and clear without being shrill. Not lost on me though, was a degree of "atmosphere" still present even in the more focused, dialogue driven mode. Surprisingly, explosions (sorry neighbors) were very life like due to the 4 woofers present.
While watching I kept grabbing for the remote to tweak the sound (which you can't do). The remote is fairly simple with input selections being the predominant use.
I tested Mode two with a Blu-ray hi-res copy of a release from a certain band known for an album depicting a prism (not mentioned due to possible copyright).
This mode definitely opened up the sound quite considerably. Highs again were crisp but not shrill, lows a bit more "boomy". But the atmosphere to this reviewer seemed to allow ample space for each instrument without the sound being cluttered. To me, this is a major MAJOR plus. ESPECIALLY for a sound-bar. In fact, I've never experienced a soundbar that would reproduce music in the manner that the Dali does. So giant kudos to Dali for this achievement!
Bluetooth was very simple to pair with my smart phone. It appears aptx and AAC are supported. It also quickly paired to my laptop and desktop via Bluetooth. I love the ability to just leisurely play tunes while I'm downstairs. Or stream online content sound.
Before ending this review I must mention:
Me being a sound nerd who loves a million options to tweak should certainly not be reason for one to be put off from the Katch One. I am extremely OCD when it comes to sound and I like to personalize/tweak every aspect of the sound-field. I would imagine that my level of "sound OCD" (as my wife calls it) puts me at the .001% of the marketplace. If you are like me, you can utilize this great soundbar in your non-dedicated sound room.
Or, if you are like the almost 100% of the rest of the population, the Dali Katch One is THE leading soundbar on the market in my opinion. In both aesthetics and functionality. With that said, get it! You can't go wrong!

What and how do I connect the desktop with the monitor?

Either with an HDMI cable or a Display Port cable. There are ports on the back of the PC.

I have Apple tv 4th Gen which is NOT a 4K device. I just bought this tv which replaced my old HDTV. I do not see any difference in picture quality (from my old tv as compared with this Sharp 4K tv). Is this because of the fact my apple tv is not 4K?

Yes.
You can't get 4k resolution from devices that don't output 4k.
So of course, the quality will be the same as your old tv - unless you get a device that outputs in 4k.

I have been reading the comments by other customers. I just picked up the tv & found out this thing doesn’t have a web browser. How do I download one if that is possible??

You can download the web browser via the TV's included app store. I just did the other day. It's pretty cool as it renders the sites exactly (and as quickly) as a browser on a laptop.

Do NOT buy this SHARP I got one in Nov and it glitched a lot one day my 5 year old was watching and it froze She taped the screen with the remote and the screen cracked Sharp doesn't make replacement screens Best buy protection won't cover it i'm screwed

Tap + 5yr old = threw remote at the screen like an MLB player? Perhaps.
Pretty sure best buy protection wouldn't cover intentional damage like this for any item. To say this is an issue with the Sharp brand is quite the stretch.

If I attach an external CD Drive, can I copy/burn something onto a disk? Thanks.

Yes, if it can be installed on another windows 10 device, it can be installed here. You will need to get a USB-A to USB-C adapter as there are no "regular" usb ports. Just usb-c.

You only get 128GB SSD and 4GB of Memory for this price? Fail.

Storage is expandable. This tablet is a fail? Far from it. I'm enjoying mine. Sadly it is already back-ordered on most sites. So perhaps this is just a case of sour-grapes on your part, or you are a MaC fan, OR you just couldn't afford this and had nothing positive to contribute. For everyone else, this tablet is AWESOME. It has handled everything I've thrown at it within reason. Obviously it's not meant to play games in full frame rate - but everything else - YEP!
