Of the titles in the Vestron Video line, Blood Diner was the one I knew the least about, but it falls right in line with other horror comedies like Eating Raoul or Microwave Massacre. Quality wise, it falls somewhere between the two, but the movie and the supplemental package make it worth picking up for adventurous horror fans.

For MST3k fans, this is THE comprehensive "Manos" set - the episode itself, a bonus disc with "Manos" on its own, documentaries about "Manos", the experience of riffing on it, and one about Jam Handy. Oh yeah - for good measure, you get both parts of Hired! (a Jam Handy production) on disc two.

Actually, in this instance I think it is; the 40th Anniversary edition of Taxi Driver not only includes everything on the old release, it adds a Q&A with Scorsese and most of the main cast which is in itself worth picking up, considering the low price of the set. Splitting the extras over two discs was also a nice touch, giving the movie a little more space on disc one.

I've always been fond of Labyrinth, and didn't really expect the old Blu-Ray to get much of an upgrade, but Sony went all out by giving the film a new scan. I don't have a 4K player or TV, so I went with this version, but it's still a marked improvement over the older disc. The added content is pretty good, too, and it was nice to see the tribute to David Bowie.

If you're the sort of person who knows Axe or Kidnapped Coed in the first place, this is a no brainer. Both movies look much better than I ever thought they could, there's an interesting hybrid cut of the two films, lots of extras, and for good measure, a CD with the music from both films. Kidnapped Coed is probably the better of the two, but Axe is my favorite in part because of its unusual tone. Run, don't walk, to this one!

Just a head's up - if you already have the Mad Max Trilogy in the tin case and Fury Road, this is a tougher choice for you. Anyone else who likes / loves the Mad Max films - walk, don't run. You get all four Mad Max films, a dedicated documentary for the first and second films*, plus Fury Road on Blu-Ray, UHD, and in the new "Black and Chrome" edition. Other than the 3-D disc, this has it all, save for the extras on Scream Factor's Mad Max edition.
* In the interest of full disclosure: The Mad Max documentary is on dvd and doesn't look great, and the Road Warrior doc is under an hour but still pretty comprehensive, for what it's worth.

It should go without saying that you should know what you're getting into before buying the Slumber Party Massacre sequels. But, just in case you saw this and thought, "huh?", Scream Factor has finished upgrading the Slumber Party Massacre trilogy DVD from years ago onto Blu-Ray. The first one was released by itself prior to this, and by popular demand, they agreed to put out the second and third films.
They aren't what anyone would call "great" movies: II is a bizarre mishmash of slasher movie and Nightmare on Elm Street knockoff, and III is basically a remake of the first film updated for the early 90s. Depending on your tastes, you'll probably like one and hate the other, but Scream Factory went the extra mile and presented the films on their own discs with new extras (and uncut versions, as permitted by reconstructed footage). It's a labor of love for two movies that mayyyybe don't deserve it, but I'm glad they did it anyway.
The complete first season of the breakthrough HBO crime drama series True Detective, which follows Louisiana State Police detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) investigating a string of occult murders while dealing with their own personal demons over a two decade period. Created by Nic Pizzolatto, the eight-episode season garnered critical acclaim for its non-linear narrative style and impressive cinematography.
Removed from the internet theories, the first season of True Detective still works. It's still a great character study, even if the mystery is more conventional than some hoped, and the interplay between McConaughey and Harrelson makes for compelling television. I don't mean to bag on the second season, but compared to the first go, it's a pale imitation.
The seventh season of Dr. Who finds the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) facing foes from within a magical winter landscape, and sees his loyal Ponds (Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill) throughtheir final voyage. Other challenges include rescuing a spaceship filled with dinosaurs, traversing the Wild West, escaping a Russian submarine, and much more.

The structure of series 7, moving from one companion to another (I guess that's kind of a SPOILER?), gives Matt Smith a little more time to breathe and inhabit the Doctor. Before long, they're ramping up to the 50th Anniversary with a wicked cliffhanger in The Name of the Doctor, and we're off to the races! I picked it up on sale, but if you like the new series, it has an interesting cross-section of Amy / Clara stories.

I picked up this set mostly for the JJ Abrams commentary, which was worth the price of admission, but the extra features were also nice to have in one place (some were on other store exclusives) and overall the package looks great on the shelf.
