An easy setup home alarm system

The SimpliSafe Indoor Safety Security kit is arguably the easiest alarm systems to install. This review focuses on the eight piece kit which is sold as a standard package. As a bonus, I will also add my thoughts on the SimpliSafe Indoor Smartcam as well.
The Simplisafe Safety Security kit (8-piece version) comes with a base station, a control panel, four entry sensors, two motions sensors and some stickers and a sign and the usual QuickStart documentation.
Setup is primarily easy. Download the SimpliSafe app from the app store (iOS or Android) and create an account then follow instructions on the app. The first thing to do is to setup the base base station by connecting it to wi-fi. Upon setup, the app can now allow you to add peripherals in any order. With this kit the peripherals include the control panel, entry-sensors, and motion sensors.
While the app can pretty much do anything for the system, the control panel comes in handy as a physical control which can be accessed by any member of your household who does not have access to the app. Installation of the control panel is easy as it has 3M adhesives to install. No more screws. The same thing applies to others. But screws are also included.
There are four entry sensors included and I have installed three sensors in the three doors of our house. I might as well install the last in a window. I have installed the two motion sensors in our dining room and living room.
Once setup, the use of the system pretty much easy. There are generally three control buttons namely Off, Home, and Away. When the mode setting is set to Away, all sensors are activated including motion sensors. (Note the motion sensors can be set to pet mode to minimize alarms.) When in Home mode, the motion sensors are deactivated so as to minimize fans alarms. Off mode is pretty much obvious. A PIN is required for the control of the system for added security.
SimpliSafe offers two plans. One is the free plan which only sets off the siren from the base which by the way emits 80db sound and a paid plan (99 cents/day) but that includes a professional staff who will coordinate with your local law enforcement officials in case of emergency. A free trial of one month is provided for you to try the service. There is no hard sell in this unlike other alarm companies. Unfortunately, the city that I live discourages alarm systems that integrate with law enforcements as there are many false alarms. As such I cannot even try the trial period for that service.
As mentioned earlier, I will include the indoor smart camera. The indoor smart camera is basically self contained device. It has its own alarm, mic, motion sensor and power supply. But it can also integrate with the base station as well. Upon integration, the indoor smart camera works perfectly and the images are crystal clear which IMO are better than other systems. I also has motion sensing too. So this camera is situated in our receiving area. But do note that if you want storage, you have to subscribe to the plan.
Overall, the system works as advertised but I do have some nitpicking to do. First I wish it has geocaching so that the alarm will activate when I’m gone. And I cannot find a way temporarily activate individual devices. But then again, this is nitpicking and should not be a dealbreaker. I highly recommend this system to everybody.

The best what Panasonic can offer today!

During the first quarter of this year Panasonic Technics has realized to premium ANC true wireless earbuds namely the AZ80 and the AZ60M2 models. While touted as”siblings” each model provides premium quality audio from Panasonic. This review will focus on the Panasonic Technics AZ80.
The Panasonic Technics AZ60M2 is the “elder sibling” of the two but is very similar to its “younger sibling”. The major difference between the two models is that the the AZ80 has 10mm drivers whereas the AZ60M2 has 8mm drivers. Out of the box and once paired to your phone, the delivers a wide soundstage outright which is already a good sign.
But what is impressing me outright are the customization features available via its app where you can download either for iOS or Android. And if you have an Android device, the sound codec used is LDAC which is a cut above AAC if you use an iPhone. Unfortunately, I no longer have an Android phone which supports LDAC. But AAC out of the box paired with my iPhone is already impressive.
So for the customization, first there are seven pairs of earbuds whereas the industry standard is just having three pairs. But to top that, the app boasts of selecting the best earpiece option which makes which earpiece more “scientific” according your hearing and ear fit. And like most premium earbuds it has custom controls for the level of ANC used and also its transparency mode levels. But to further control the audio output, audio-presets are available and a custom equalizer is also available to perfectly suit to your audio preferences.
Call quality of the AZ80 can be tested within the app. You can test your voice as what can be heard by the party you are talking to. This is a mixed bag for me since my initial use resulted to mediocre call quality. Nonetheless this works.
Battery life is rated at seven hours with a total of around 24 hours with the use of the charging dock which is pretty much standard. Likewise, the charging dock uses USB-C instead of the older older USB-B standard. But to add, the charging dock supports wireless charging which is nice.
Other features the AZ89 has is its find feature. Just in case you misplace them you can use audio beeps to locate your “lost” earbuds. But on top of that, in case you left your earbuds in another location, you can see the location in a map similar to find your device options found in iOS and Android devices.
Overall, these are great earbuds and I would recommend them to others. But this makes me wonder if it is still worth the more expensive AZ80. But if you want to the beast what Technics can offer, then this is the earbuds for you.

A comprehensive online security suite

McAfee started decades ago as an anti-virus software. The earliest virus I can remember thirty years ago was a virus named Brain. Now McAfee is a full fledged subscription based security software service. One such service is McAfee’s Privacy and Identity Guard. This review is to determine whether or not such a service is required or not.
McAfee’s Privacy and Identity Guard is basically a suite of three services namely Identity Monitoring; Personal Data Cleanup; and Online Account Cleanup.
The first service Identity Guard is pretty much a generic service as it simply monitors you email accounts if they have been hacked. In my case the service has detected email hacks as far as way back in 2016. As mentioned earlier, this is pretty much a generic service as Apple and Google also notifies you of email account hacks. Main difference here is that McAfee traces which accounts and services were hacked and when.
The second service is Personal Data Cleanup. Now here things become interesting. Upon running the scan, McAfee detected 35 data brokers that have access to my personal data. We all know that these data brokers sells our information to other parties which further compounds the problem. The good thing here is that McAfee can clean up the data. But do note that it may take 30-45 days to complete wipe out your data. But at least you’ll have some piece of mind.
Lastly, an online account cleanup service is offered. This basically monitors which accounts have the most traffic. In my case it would be my Microsoft account since I am primarily a Windows user.
That said, McAfee offers a complete suite of security services. And in my personal opinion, the services offered by MvAfee is well worth its subscription because you’ll never know when you need it until you need it.

A convenient combo product!

Disclaimer: This product has been tested by my wife as I have short hair.
The Shark Smooth Style Heated Comb Straightener + Smoother has a rather unique selling proposition. It is a combo product that can straighten and smooth your and also dry your hair. Quite often this would be a two product combo.
First the Shark SmoothStyle looks like a large corded roller brush. But how does it actually work? Well it works in two modes as described below:
One is the dry hair mode. Start first with dry and detangled hair. Switch unit to dry hair mode. You notice that there are two heat vents on the roller. Normally, it would take a couple of minutes to heat this up. Just wait for the light to turn green. Use the SmoothStyle like you would like any roller brush. It is quite evident that as you use the SmoothStyle hot air is also blown thereby styling your hair in the process.
Similarly the wet hair mode works in the same fashion. First, start with partially dried hair. Twist the sliver ring to wet hair mode. But unlike the dry hair mode, there is no heat coming out. Use the SmoothStyle again like you would a normal hair roller brush. By using the SmoothStyle you can now style your hair adding volume.
This is indeed a very convenient product. But according to my wife there are two issues but not dealbreakers. Given its size, the SmoothStyle is best for people with long hair. Even with neck long hair, my wife had some difficulty using the product. It seems to be better suited for people with shoulder length or longer hair.
The next issue my wife observed is that it more of a jack of all trade product rather a specialized one as it is neither that good with dry or wet hair. But to compensate for this, it adds convenience by using only one product instead of two. This is very ideal if you want to style your hair on the fly. It is for this reason that I will remove one star for this product as the benefits still overweigh greatly its disadvantage. I would still recommend this product.

A must for iPad owners with young kids

The Insignia Bumper Case for the 2022 10.9 inch iPad is what it is namely a bumper case. But what differentiates this from other bumper cases being sold out there? First, I find the silicone material used in this case is very soft which is unlike the silicone material used in other brands which are a bit stiff. This for me is a plus as it provides cushioning. The edges are enlarged like most bumper cases. But the added cushioning by the Insignia bumper case adds more protection in my opinion.
But what for me seems to add further protection for your iPad is the honeycomb design inside the case. This type of cushioning design is typically found in sneakers which really gives protection to the tablet. Do remember bumper cases are really designed for kids and the more protection the batter.
And lastly, this bumper case has a stand included. Watching content is definitely a significant purpose tablets being used by kids. Other than these two reasons, there’s not much to say about this case but it seems to be a very reliable case which can withstand the demands of a young person who would most likely throw his or her tablet around. I would highly recommend this number cases for people with young kids in their household.

A very capable gaming laptop!

The Acer Nitro 5 series of gaming laptops have been around for some years. And though serious gamers would consider this as a mid-level gaming computer, this specific model can still hold on its own.
This Acer Nitro AN515-58 boasts of having a 12th gen i5 12405H which has 8 cores and has a maximum turbo frequency of 4.4hz. For most gamers, this would be quite sufficient, This comes with 16GB DDR4 3200 MT/s pre-installed. But it can be upgraded to a maximum off 64 GB using DDR5 4800 MT/s. For now this will serve its purpose, but I may upgrade the RAM to 32GB when memory becomes more affordable.
As for the GPU, this gaming laptop is equipped with an Nvidia GTX 3050 Ti GPU. And while note the latest out in the market, this GPU is still 30% faster than the earlier GTX 3050 GPU. And like most laptop GPUs, the included GPU includes 4GB of RAM. As a point of comparison, gaming desktops now have 8GB of RAM. Still this would suffice for most gaming applications.
One point of contention here is that this model comes only with 512GB of RAM. And with games being so huge nowadays, this may not be sufficient. As such, I immediately replaced the stock NVME M.2 SSD with a Samsung 2TB EVO Plus SSD. And upon opening the bottom of the laptop, I immediately noticed that there is a slot for another M.2 SSD inside. I understand you can use Intel’s Octane Memory and Storage Management app to create a RAID volume. But having a 2TB SSD, I feel I no longer need this function. Also, like most gaming laptops, this model also has a slot for a SATA based SSD. Again I understand you can use RAID on this but I do plan to use the SATA SSD on my previous gaming laptop as that is where I store data for games and other configs for easier transfer when it’s time to upgrade. One thing I did notice is that Samsung’s Data Migration was not able to fully clone the SSD since the hidden partitions were not copied. Perhaps, using other cloning tools may clone everything. Nonetheless, I did a clean install of Windows 11 on this machine.
So far everything is fine with this machine but I do have some minor gripes though. First, is that the backlight of the keyboard is not customizable. And by default, the backlight turns off after 30 seconds. And while this is normal for gaming laptops, the issue here is that it is hard to read the keys when the backlight it off. If you do not plan to use an external keyboard, then this can be sort of an annoyance. But in my case I do plan to connect this laptop to a 32” 4K display and also connect a gaming keyboard and mouse combo.
Also, Acer Care’s instruction for calibrating the battery is a bit off to say the least as it instructs you to drain the battery and charge it again but the app requires you to plug the laptop otherwise the app won’t work. Just calibrating the battery the old fashioned way by doing a full discharge should suffice. That said, I would still rate this gaming laptop as a capable laptop able to run AAA games found in Steam. I would still recommend this to others.

A must if you have older devices

In today’s world, a TV is no longer enough for your home entertainment needs. But not today. Nowadays, you’d usually find a dvd/blu ray/4K player, a cable box, a streaming device and even a gaming console. As such a universal remote is often very handy so that you’ll only have one device to control everything. The first wave of universal remotes often used IR technology to operate. But HDMI cables through CEC technology, has already began replacing IR based universal remotes. So, the question remains. Is there still a need for an IR base universal remote control unit? Short answer is yes if you have older technology lying around. Here comes the Terk Universal remote control.
The Terk Universal Remote 4-device model is what I am going to review here. First, the Terk remote dispenses with the batteries and is charged via a USB cable. For me that is a convenience since you no longer need batteries for the remote to operate. Then again, the batteries may fail over time sooner than a regular remote does. But arguably by that time, your devices would also be obsolete by that time. Being rechargeable, the unit does not have heft anymore. But fortunately, the unit is backlit. There is no need to explain that rc units that come with devices have no backlight. So this is a plus.
As mentioned earlier, this is a four device rc unit. the four devices it can manage are TVs, dvd players, cable boxes and streaming devices. I no longer have cable so there is no way I can evaluate this function.
Programming the remote is pretty much a straightforward process. One is to select the device and input the device rc code into the rc unit. A list of manufacturers is provided inside the box. A simpler way is to auto scan for the code in order for your device to work. Of course if this doesn’t work, then your option is to input the respective codes.
I have tried this on my Hi-sense TV and it immediately worked with my TV. Also, I have an Maganavox 4K Blu Ray player and it also worked. This is great for me since the RC unit of the Magnavox is quite small and the buttons have an unusual layout. The Terk remote control has a pretty much standard button layout and is easy. And lastly, I am having trouble connecting to my Roku Ultra. Perhaps this doesn’t work with CEC controlled devices. I have an older IR based Roku which the Ultra replaced. It may work with that.
But overall, this is a very convenient unit for all. And admittedly this device may not be for everyone like in my case my Roku can control my TV and sound bar too. But if you have older or IR based devices, then this universal remote is a must!

Pad cases are quite common and its really hard to differentiate one from each other. Quite often they employ the same design. But what differentiates a good one from a bad one? Well I’m here to discuss if the Insignia (Best Buy’s in house brand) 10.9 inch iPad folio case is a good one or not.
First is that it is a form fitting case with a foldable front cover quite similar to the original folio case. It has the trifold front cover that folds up to make it as a stand for the tablet.So what makes it special?
Well, not that the cat was mentioned is form fitting to the specs of the iPad 10.9”. But one would notice there is a slot where you can insert the Apple Pencil which makes it handy. Aesthetically, it has an edge over other folio cases since it has a back window providing a more elegant look. There are also ridges on the edge and the case is much thicker than most folio cases giving it as sense of providing more drop protection. Insignia however does not provide a certified drop rating. (At least I didn’t see one in the packaging.) The front flap too is a bit thicker but take note the overall thickness is not that make, And the inside of the flap has velvety texture not often found in other cases giving the the tablet screen more protection,
So in essence, this is a very basic case for your iPad . But in truth I like the overall design like the ridges, the Apple pen holder, the window at the back etc. which makes this a compelling buy if you are in the market for an iPad case. I’d highly recommend this case,

A hefty all around mouse!

The Logitech MX Anywhere 3S is the follow up model to the highly popular MX Anywhere series. Compared the the previous MX Anywhere 3, this is a minor upgrade. But since this is a replacement model any upgrade is welcome.
First it maintains its ambidextrous design though the side buttons are only found in the left side. And like its predecessor it is still small and can be charged via USB-C of which a charging cable is included in the box. Logitech claims that like its predecessor, this mouse can be charged via a USB-C cable. No more batteries! And since Logitech claims the battery life is seventy days, I cannot verify this since I’ve had this product for only a few weeks. But honestly, having other Logitech mice can make good on this claim since Logitech mice are known to be power sippers and one AA battery can even last up to one year for certain mouse models.
The MX 3S now deals away with a dongle and is connected via bluetooth. Up to three devices can be connected to this mouse. Switching from one device is as simple as tapping on the toggle button located at the bottom of the mouse. Pressing the toggle buttons then allows you to assign a device. The mouse in general operates in Windows or Mac OS and can also be used in tablets. The one highlight for this mouse also is called Logitech Flow wherein you can use the mouse across several devices. You have to download the app though. But in my case I have to specific use for this function but it is nice to have for those who would need it.
One thing about this mouse is that it has an 8K DPI sensor meaning that it is much easier to scroll across larger screens. I have a 32” screen and adjusting the speed of this mouse definitely makes it easier for me. Like the Flow feature, it is best to adjust the settings on the app itself.
The performance of this mouse is such that it is ideal as your “one mouse to run them all”. Having the ability to connect to several devices negate the need to for several high performance mice. This product in essence is an all around performer that it can be used for business/schoolwork and even some gaming! I would highly recommend this product!

This is a fine camera in many ways, but after losing some photos and a conversation with Panasonic, I learned that you must use the included panasonic software to download photos. (I use Picasa.) That makes the camera less than 5 star, since iPhoto would have the same problem - so if you buy this, and it is a fine piece of equipment, use their photofun software to downloard

The wifi performance is good. However I found it odd that when I used fast.com to measure speed, the phone registered 20 mbps which by itself pretty good if you're using a phone. But since I ran it simultaneously with my pc, my pc had a 70 mbps. Also the processor is not bad. It is not the latest and is commonly found in low end or rather entry level android phones. If you want a better phone you might want to consider the POP 4S which is similar but has an octa-core processor at 1.8 GHz, 2GB RAM 13 mp camera with a fingerprint sensor at $170. This sells for $150. So the $20 dollar difference is worth it. But the Black Friday deal sells at $50. So I got this phone. :)

I wanted to like this phone. The specs were just fine. The screen was just fine. The only complaint I had was that the phone reboots frequently. Fresh off a factory reset, it would constantly reboot before I could even set it up. As a software engineer, I am disappointed that software like this can even be released. This is not the way to showcase a brand and the reason for many returns on otherwise perfectly fine hardware.

A lot of Alcatel models are like this including my Pop 4+. It seems that if you have a boot loop, let the phone rest for a few minutes then restart. do this even if you have wiped data. But this shouldn't happen at all especially for a new phone.

Alcatel uses older underpowered cpu which slows performance compared to currently available android marshmallow phones. Alcatel does support adoptive SD card storage unlike LG and Samsung. Dual sim is a plus. Needs better processor to be competitive.

as mentioned in the title, if you need a faster phone get the 4S. It has a 1.8Ghz processer and 2GB RAM. There are three POP 4 phones - POP 4/POP 4 Plus/POP 4S wherein the 4 Plus is the mid-tier POP 4 phone. But for $49.99 during Black Friday, why not?

The phone keeps restarting even though the battery has more than enough charge. I've tried a hard reset and that hasnt helped. A factory reset stopped the cycle and i managed to use the phone for like 20 minutes and the phone restarted. When we ordered the phone, we also ordered a case from a third party. At first we thought the case was pressing the power button because it was a tight fit but it didnt seem right. There was also an incident i had in the past with the one touch evolve that was exactly the same. I would like to hear back and now if this can be fix :) Have a nice Day!

After having the phone for less than 1 month, I took it on vacation where I didn't have service. On the way my phone started to restart randomly. When I arrived at my destination the phone started into a reboot loop. If I caught it booting up quick enough occasionally I could navigate for a couple minutes. Even after I was able to get wifi connected and any other setting I thought could affect it such as gps location disabled the phone continued into the reboot loop. After researching on many blogs and andriod q and a sites I couldn't find a helpful answer to remedy the issue. I reluctantly did a factory reset but the loop continued. Finally, after returning back home I attempted to use the phone and it returned to "normal". I am very dissatisfied and I am generally very easy to please. I will be looking for another device to replace this asap.

I also did the factory reset to ease the symptoms. But it seems to be the gps module as then random reboots often occur when I am in my car and mobile. Also when I use Yelp and try to get directions, the phone restarts. No problem when I'm home though.

I purchased this phone on black Friday because bestbuy was selling at $50, the phone had 2-yrs warranty, and Alcatel is one of the few good brands. I was excited about this purchase thinking that I paid only $50, but my excitement did vanish in a couple of days when I found that the phone restarts itself. After keeping an eye on the phone for a few days, I found that it restarts only when I drive or I am in a remote area. I googled about the issue and luckily found the reason behind restart. I am using T-mobile connection and had turned 4G LTE on. The 4G LTE service of T-mobile is not available in all areas of ABQ and therefore whenever I drove in areas where T-mobile signal was weak, phone used to restart. My phone never restarted in my school or in my house as T-mobile signal is excellent in these places. To fix the issue, I changed the network settings in my phone and set 3G as the default data service and after that it never restarted.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you,too.
My finding is - this phone supports 4G only if the strength of the signal is excellent, otherwise, it restarts itself. But I don't know why doesn't it ,like other brands, work in case of bad signal. My friend has samsung phone and she never had the restart issue though we go to all the places together in the same car.
All other features of this phone are like samsung phone - my the most favorite brand. I haven't observed any other issue and the phone works like charm. Speed, sound quality (the default music player doesn't have equalizer, so you might try VLC music player), picture+video quality, and call quality are just superb. Finally I started loving this phone.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you,too.

I called tech support and was informed that there is an issue with this phone. Alcatel promptly replaced my phone with newer firmware and presumably hardware and the problems of random reboots have gone.

Will this work on a north-facing covered porch?
As long as there is enough light not necessarily direct sunlight , shiuld still work. Though some solar devices tend to oberheat when under direct sunight like batteries, I cannot ascertain if this is the case. Mine uses only indirect sunlight.

Has anyone noticed it being hot? Not quite sure if it would be ok for my laptop.
It becomes very hot. As per my initial use it use somewhere between 60-70C but I've read someone measure it as high as 81C. I purchased a 1mm copper heatsink with thermal tape and attached it to this SSD. As per my measurement temperatures range from 34C to 46C. I've read somewhere 50C is still considered normal or acceptable. Note not purchase the 3mm heatsinks (the ones with fins) as they are designed for desktops. The 1mm copper heatsink fits perfectly on ,y HP Pavilion gaming laptop replacing the meatl bracket (with thermal paste) holding the old SSD.
