An awesome accessory!

The Samson Go Mic Video USB microphone with webcam is the perfect addition to your desktop monitor or a replacement for your laptop built-in webcam and microphone. The physical design is radically different from traditional microphone or webcam design as it is a collapsible which gives it which when collapsed is about the size of a battery phone charger. Do note this is the upgrade of the popular Samson mic since it now includes a webcam.
The Samson USB mic connects to your PC via a USB-C cable (provided) and is both PC and Mac compatible. No drivers are needed as this is already plug-and-play for both platforms. Once expanded, the Samson can be clipped on the monitor, attached to a mini-tripod or simply stand on its own.
What makes this different is that the included mic has both cardioid and omni polar modes, meaning by selecting a switch on the side, the microphone can be directional which is good for video calls or blogging and and also be set as omni-directional which makes it perfect for group calls. The downside though not a deal breaker is that a foam or deadcat is not included which makes the mic record unwanted background noise ar times,
The included video cam is 1080p which is better than most built-in webcams found in most laptops. Not much can be said here save for the fact that it works as intended. Also, I wish a cover foot he webcam has been incorporated in the design. And lastly, a jack si included should you prefer to use use earphones,
The Samson USB mic with FHD webcam is truly a nice accessory for your PC or Mac. I would recommend to anyone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

It works but it has a dealbreaker for me
on October 28, 2022

Note: This surveillance system requires: 1) basic knowledge of internet connectivity and the managing of apps; and more importantly 2) some basic handyman knowledge including diagram reading, drilling, and low voltage wire connection. Should you feel that you cannot do this yourself, it is strongly suggested you get a professional installer or at least someone who can assist you in the installation of this surveillance system
The Swann Fourtify Wireless System is the company’s latest product attempting to gain a slice of the pie in the wireless camera system. But as to manage expectations, the Swann Fourtify system is not totally wireless as that is the territory of the Swan CoreCam series which I also have. Rather the Swann Fourtify system is a four camera system (hence “Fourtify”) and has a wireless or wifi enbled main camera which also acts as a hub or base wherein three other cameras are “wired” to it. Most of Swann’s product lines have a separate base or hub connected to your router and the cameras are either wired all the way to the base or hub or are connected via wifi. I am saying this as some existing owners and reviewers do complain that it it is not wireless. Perhaps it should have been branded as wifi enabled,
Now since this is a “semi-wireless” system, your knowledge in reading diagrams come into play. Simply put the main camera has input jacks for the other three cameras and a power cord. This power cord has a splitter at the end wherein the other three cameras are connected for power. A power adapter is included as the main supply of power.
Now before you go out installing the cameras, make sure that the system works. Connect the cameras as per the diagram, download the app, create a free account (though a paid tier is also available too) and place the main camera to where you will mount it. Once verified, you can then start physically installing the system. And the time needed to install the system depends on the planned layout of your system.
Upon installation of my Swann Fourtify wireless system, I have noted three things. First the main camera tends to be warm which is normally not the case. I have gotten in touch with Swann and was told that a slight temperature increase is expected since the main camera also acts as the hub or base. Second, the base camera can only get a 10% signal strength mounted in my porch. Surprisingly, my CoreCam has a signal strength ranging from 55% to 70%. The Fortify main camera has two antennas and the CoreCam has an internal one. In spite of that, I have noticed connecting to the app is still fairly responsive.
Another thing I have noticed is that the field of view of the Fourtify is narrower than my CoreCam and also other wireless camera. But what really surprised me is that all cameras can only be aimed up and down and cannot be used to pivot. This quite honestly is a dealbreaker for me as even though the cameras work fine and even the wires were long enough, the inability to properly position the cameras the way I want it is a dealbreaker for me. The only way to provide an able of view is to add wedges when mounting the cameras which will entail additional work and costs too. A simple pivoting mount is the solution for this.
As such, it is very hard for me to recommend this product until such time Swann can address the wifi issue (via firmware update) and come up with a swiveling or pivoting design for the cameras.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A great value pair of ANC headphones
on October 18, 2022
Posted by: msumulong
Anker under its Soundcore label is a fairly new player in the crowded Bluetooth headphone space. However, unlike other new entrants, Anker is already gaining traction as a brand and can already compete with the likes of Sony or Bose but at a more budget friendly price point. The Anger Soundcore Space Q45 ANC Bluetooth headphone Anker’s latest offering to consumers.
The Space Q45’s form factor is similar to the previous Q35 and it would be easily confused with one another. Its metal and plastic headband seems to be well built and has the right amount of tension to keep the headphone secure in your head. The Q45 has over-the-ear ear muffs but are rather on the small side that it may be difficult to determine whether it is an over-the-ear headphones or on-ear headphones. Regardless, the one inch thick muffs (and the gentle grip of the headband) give you a comfortable fit. And as part of its design aesthetic, the Q45 has circular panels on the ear muffs with the Soundcore branding. Whether you’ll like it or not is a matter of preference,
The Q45 has tactile buttons instead of touch controls found in other headsets. And while it may be a step backward for some, I find tactile buttons to be simply better, As expected, the Q45 has a power-on button, a pair of volume buttons and a play/pause button which is also functions as the answer phone button.
One of the key features of the Q45 is the battery life which is rated at 50 hours, As of this writing I haven’t fully drained the battery yet. But I have been using this headset heavily for three days and I am only halfway through the battery. At this rate, one charge can last you a week. For reference, the competition averages only a 30 hour battery life as compared to Anker’s 50 hours. Charging is done via a USB-C cable. And a hardshell carrying case is also provided.
Pairing the headphones to your phone is fairly simple. But it is recommended that you download the app (both available in iOS and Android) to maximize the features of the Q45 (as well as other Anker products). A 3.5mm jack is also provided should you need to have a wired connection.
Like most Bluetooth ANC headphones out there, an equalizer as well as presets are included. Overall the sound signature of Anker is quite good and can compete with the heavy weights. One bonus feature of the Q45 is its Q45 is its support of hi-res audio via the use of the LDAC codec. While this provides marginal improvement in audio quality, it does consume more battery life. But then again, the Q45 has a rated battery life of 50 hours in spite of the increased battery usage this is still viable. But do note that LDAC is only supported in Android devices as iOS mostly uses the AAC codec.
The ANC features of the Q45 has several levels and can is very decent at cancelling outside noise whereas canceling low level or heavy rumblings though decent is somewhat lacking. This is territory of Sony and Bose though. But I do like the transparency mode of the Q45 as it maintains the sound quality unlike that of Sony and Bose. Also if I am not mistaken, adaptive ANC is a fairly new feature for Anker which is already a common feature for other brands, Still it is worth noting the adaptive ANC is quite impressive that changes in noise cancelling functions are quite subtle and barely noticeable. Other headsets are pretty much annoying that I turn off that feature. But for the Q45, I don’t mind if I leave adaptive ANC on.
And finally, when using the headphones for calls, the voice quality is medium at best. Not bad but not exactly something to write about as the cliche goes. Voice calls get a bit choppy at times. This is where the competition leaves the Q45 behind. Still I would say call quality is still decent,
Overall, the Q45 is at par albeit a little lower than the heavyweights. But considering the price point of Anker products in general, I would say that the quality you get is worth more than the price that you would pay. I would definitely recommend this product.

Truly a versatile coffeemaker!
on October 13, 2022

Coffee makers are pretty much a standard appliance in today’s modern household with the classic drip being the most popular. One limitation of the traditional coffee maker is that the amount of coffee that is brewed is much more than what you need. This is mostly true especially if you are the only one drinking coffee in your household which actually applies in my case. And while single serve coffee makers have been introduced lately, these tend to use proprietary pods and can be quite expensive. And though other means of making coffee an be utilized such as using a French press, the convenience and affordability of using a traditional drip coffee maker is still the best option for most people. Here comes the Brown MultiServe coffeemaker which addresses those concerns.
The Braun MultiServe coffeemaker is stylish model and offers a lot of features. Most notable here is the ability to masker the exact amount of coffee you need. In fact there are seven sizes to choose from ranging from a small cup of coffee to a ten cup serving. The amount of guesswork to make single or small serving of coffee is already limited since the coffee maker determines the amount of coffee to be made rather than just partially filling the water container.
The Braun MultiServe coffeemaker like most advanced coffeemakers can be programmed to brew coffee at a certain time. Also, it has the capability to make three brew strengths for your coffee. Plus, the Braun coffeemaker also has the capability to make an ice brew too. Brewing coffee from scratch takes around four to eight minutes depending on the amount of coffee being brewed. And like most programmable coffeemakers out there, there is an auto shut off feature for safety concerns.
One this I like about the MultiServe is that the coffee drip part (not sure of the term) is high enough to accommodate coffee mugs that can hold as much as 20oz. This essentially makes brewing your coffee int eh carafe and piping your coffee into your mug making one less item to wash whenever you brew your coffee. In addition a nice feature is also added here. A coding mug tray is positioned on the side of the drip area. This enables you place place your coffee cup or small mug higher so that newly dripped coffee won’t splash.
The included carafe is large enough to hold ten cups of coffee which as a removable and flippable lid. When brewing coffee using the carafe, the warming plate activates to keep your coffee warm. Moreover, there is a freshness indicator to show you how fresh your coffee in the carafe after a period of some time. But personally, I would prefer a thermal carafe as the warming plate tends to “bun” coffee. But then again the freshness indicator somehow helps. Still a thermal carafe will keep your coffee warm without the need for a warming plate.
Lastly, there is a hot water only feature on the Braun MultiServe. The water temperature can be programmed from 185F to 203F. Braun claims that the water passes through a different route in order to prevent residual coffee taste in the hot water. But in my initial use, the hot water tasted coffee. Perhaps this is our tot he fact that eventually the water passes through the drip spout. For now I am avoiding this function and will continue to use my electric kettle for my hot water needs.
The Braun MultiServe coffeemaker is truly a a versatile coffeemaker. And as such this will now replace my single serve coffeemaker that uses expensive proprietary cups. I would truly recommend this coffeemaker.

A real content creator's camera

Video logging is the in thing nowadays when it comes to cameras. And quite obviously cell phones at the front of this new trend. As such camera manufacturers are well aware of this trend and as to remain competitive, these companies have been offering “video logging” cameras in recent years. Nikon some reason has not joined in the fray until now. So here comes the Nikon Z 30 APS-C video logging camera.
The Nikon Z 30 can be viewed as the little brother of the existing Nikon Z 50. It has similar specs compared to the Z 50 which includes the sensor, form factor and build quality and even the battery. There are notable differences though which I’ll explain below.
First is the absence of an electronic view finder and a built-in flash. Now some people especially those who are more into stills photography who may consider the lack of an electronic view finder is a dealbreaker, the absence of a view finder makes perfect sense. It seems the Z 30 is marketed to beginner or a bit advanced video loggers and videographers coming from cell phones, hence a viewfinder will not be a dealbreaker for them. Also, the removal of the viewfinder and the built-in flash makes the costs lower which also makes sense, since these are beginner users making a lower price point appealing to them.
Second, the 30-minute limit in video recording has been increased to roughly two hours which puts the Z 30 in the realm of camcorders. Do note that in certain countries (especially those in Europe) have limits on video recording capabilities. But there are reports that the Z 30 has tendency to overheat or to put it gently warm up after extended use. So far in my limited test on the video capabilities, I have not encountered any warmups.
Lastly, since this is now more of a “video camera with stills capabilities” rather than a “stills camera with video capabilities”, Nikon has decided to include a USB-C port that can power (and charge) the camera so that it can fully function not only as a video camera but as a web cam also.
Another thing to note is the auto-focusing capabilities of the Z 30. Since video loggers are presumed to wok mostly alone, the tracking capabilities of the Z 30 is top notch. It uses eyes tracking to auto-focus on moving objects and it also has good auto-focusing on subjects such as products or items being displayed for close up. In this regard the Z 30 passes as a “video logging” camera.
The primary common thing of the Z 30 as compared to the Z 50 and also the retro-style Zfc is the image quality. This is a no brainer since all three crop sensor cameras share the same sensor. One thing of note that that even though this is an APS-C camera, performance in low light is very good. In addition, the included kit lens (which all three cameras share) has good image quality for a kit lens. In fact, background blur is more pronounced that the included kit lens is entering APS-C baes f2.8 territory (I may be saying too much but the kit lens is actually good.) Unfortunately, Nikon AFAIK only offers three APS-C Z mount lenses while the rest are full frame. And though you can use full frame lenses on the APS-C Z mount cameras, they are quite expensive. But then again Nikon may be presuming that newbies may be satisfied with the kit lens only. Moreover, I understand Nikon has a lens roadmap for the Z series out on the internet.
Handling of the Nikon Z 30 is also superb. It is fairly small enough but has a grip which makes it like holing a compact DSLR. The body is light enough and even though the feel is a bit plasticky, holding the Z 30 is perfectly fine.
I understand that the body of the Z 30 is weather sealed too. But I cannot determine if the included kit lens is also weather sealed too. And though in my opinion most video loggers will not be needing a weather sealed body and not having a weather sealed lens is self-defeating, having a weather sealed body is always a welcome addition.
One thing I don’t like about the Z 30 is the lack of a stand-alone charger. Charging via USB-C takes long at around seven hours. A trick here is to use a power direct charger whether it’s a plug-in or a PD battery pack. A stand-alone charger is also for purchase. But unfortunately, it seems cameras like cell phones no longer include chargers. (I understand that Nikon sells different creators’ accessory kits in the region, but the one described above is the one available in the United States.)
Finally, to add to the video logging experience, a dedicated creators’ accessory kit is available to complement the Z 30. This includes the Nikon BT remote, a tripod and remote holder, and a Rode Video Mic with wind screen. A small wind screen which you attached to the hotshot is also available for purchase. But personally, Nikon should have also included it in the box.
Overall, the Nikon Z 30 is a video logging camera also which is also good for stills too. It is sold at a reasonable price point aimed as video loggers who are considering upgrading their gear in the near future.

Amazing audio and build quality!
on October 9, 2022
Posted by: msumulong
The Rocca Syn Max Air the latest premium gaming headsets out there. Now why do I say premium? First, the over all build quality of the Syn Max Air reminds me of the build quality of the Sony XM series or the Bose Quiet series which are premium headsets but only for audio. This headset is primarily designed for gamers in mind. And seldom do you see headsets with this build quality. (Yes some headsets out there are good but really this reminds me of Sony and Bose.)
That said, the build quality is generally plastic but has a firm grip over my head. The ear muffs are adjustable (as expected) but the design of the extending tubes remind me of the Bose 700 and the arm support of the headset reminds me of my Bowers and Wilkins headset (though they are not carbon fiber like the Bowers & Wilkins). And overall, the feel is like Sony headsets but with a bit more heft. But being gaming headset, this of course has lighting embedded in the headset.
Customization of the Syn Air Max is controlled by the Roccast Swarm app downloadable from their website. On top of that, there is also a mobile version of their app both In iOS and Android. This is very handy and also you can use this for mobile gaming.
One feature that is not common in gaming headsets is the inclusion of a charging dock. While it is not a necessity for me, I would still say that this is a nice addition to this headset. Do note that, once you try to setup the headset with the app, an firmware update for both the headset and dock is available (at least I was prompted to include the dock too prior to updating.) But at the end of the day, the dock is not really necessary for me.
Now as for the audio quality, the sound of this headset is simply amazing. Though it does not really boast of high quality and proprietary audio features save for the spatial sound, I would say that the Syn Max Air has a superb spatial sound which I don’t find in most gaming headsets. Also, the clarity of the headset is simply great reminding me again of the Sony and Bose that I actually use this headset for audio only using my computer. And lastly before I forget to mention, this headset is also wireless. Need I say more.
I really like this Roccat headset as it is premium in both quality and audio features. I would really recommend this headset!

A very capable keyboard
on October 7, 2022
Posted by: msumulong
The Steelseries Apex 9 Mini packs a lot of punch for what it is mainly a mini gaming keyboard. Being TKL this keyboard is small. But this is not the usual TKL where it is around 80% of a full sized keyboard. The Apex 9 Mini is 60% of the size of 101-key keyboard. That said it can cater for those who just want a small keyboard or those who want a full fledged compact gaming keyboard that they can take anywhere,
The Apex 9 Mini aside from its small form factor boasts of linear optical switches and a two-point actuation. In layman’s terms this would roughly translate to gaming mode and timing mode. (I understand other Apex series keyboards have more functionality.) The keyboard has a multi-function key wherein it is used to toggle between modes. And since the so-called “non-essential” keys for gaming are removed, you can also use this toggle key to enable F-key, arrow key and other functions keys capabilities. The keyboard itself is powered and connected via a USB-C to USB-cable.
Customization of this keyboard is possible due to the inclusion of swappable optical switches. For your convenience, a switch removal tool (or simply a pair of tweezers) is located at the back/bottom of the keyboard. Further customization of the keyboard isuch as changing light patterns, function/macro keys are made possible by a downloadable app called the Steelseries Engine via the website. And to add some durability a steel/aluminum front plate is included int he keyboard. And eventually typing fairy comfortable.
And while the Steelseries Apex 9 Mini may not be my prefferred keyboard style (pretty much I’m still a 101-key keyboard guy), I would rank it favorably because in spite of it’s small size, it can deliver much of what games want. For this reason, I am highly recommending this keyboard.

It does more than just purify air!
on October 3, 2022
Posted by: msumulong
The Shark HC501 Air Purifier 3-in-1 Max has it all. It is first and foremost an air purifier. But add to that it is also a fan and a heater. Quite honestly, this is the first 3-in-1 I have encountered given that we have four air purifiers scattered all over the house.
The Scar HC 501 is cylindrical in shape which is quite common. It comes in tow colors namely black and white. ( I have the back variant.) In front of the unit is a display that shows temperature and air quality. It has a lighted ring that changes color depending on air quality. Note that this model has a capacity of 1000 square feet meaning that it can also be used in your living room too. Being cylindrical in shape also means that the filter which can be accessed from the back is also cylindrical.
On top of the unit is where you can find the control panel which is circular in shape. But wait, that “control panel” can also be removed and be used as your remote. This actually pretty as the design actually fooled me. The the remote control/control panel has you power button (though there is also another power button in the main unit itself.) To use the HC501 purely as an air purifier, make sure you turn the switch on the right side of the unit to purifier mode. One operational, the air flow comes our through back side. In the remote, you can find the automatic button which pretty much does what it says. Air purifier strength is automatic and you just leave it there. The ring at the front panel becomes red/orange when the air is dirty and blue when the air is clean. (There is also a dimmer button in the remote unit in case you do not want any lights on.) Amfyou can see the actual air quality through the digital display. Lastly, you can adjust the purifying strength manually by pressing the lower arrow buttons I the remote unit.
By switching the level to fan mode, you can now operate the HC501 as a fan or a heater. Be aware that whether in fan mode or heater mode, you get purified air coming out of the unit. Also, when switching to fan mode, the air flow is now on the from of the unit. A lever is also located in front of the unit to adjust air flow. You can adjust air speed by using the arrows located at the lower end of the remote unit. There are six levels of air flow levels available. And of course there is an oscillating button for the main unit like most other fans.
By pressing the red temperature button, obviously makes the HC501 go into heating mode. The left and right arrow keys act as thermostat controls. Pressing the right arrow key until the says displays high means that there would be continuous heat otherwise, the unit stops at the set temperature. And finally, there is a timer which works to all three modes of the HC501.
The HC501 lacks wi-fi controls. But in general, there is really no need for wi-fi for this unit to function as intended. But having wi-fi capability for controls would be a nice touch. But then again, that would add to the cost of the HC501.
In spite of the HC501 not having wi-fi, this should not be a dealbreaker for its intended function. The HC501 has a nice feature set and and seems to have robust build quality to boot. I would highly recommend the HC501.

Posted by: msumulong
The Velox Magnetic Wireless Mount from iOttie is one of the most recent releases from this company. This mount is well built and has some heft to it. It has a ball joint and telescopic arm to make viewing angles better.
A suction plate is also included should you decide to setup your phone in your dashboard. But I have noticed that the built-in suction cup is strong that the you can do without the mounting plate. But in my case I have installed the mount on the left side of my car’s windshield.
What makes this different from most magnetic mounts is that thus is MagSafe compatible. Using my iPhone 13 Pro with a MagSafe case, the magnet is strong enough to hold my phone. Though personally, I would prefer a stronger magnet. (But it’s no dealbreaker for me.) And unlike most MagSafe mounts out there, the Velox mount also has wireless charging capabilities. The charging capacity of the mount is only 7.5W which is way off the maximum 20W the iPhone can handle. But this is a limitation of wireless chargers. Chargers with a higher capacity tend to overheat and often times deemed not safe.
There is not much more really to describe the Velox Wireless Mount save for the fact that it is a premium and well built MagSafe wireless charger. And though it may priced at a premium, it is still a good buy as competition in a similar price range do not have built-in wireless capabilities. I would highly recommend this charger.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Google TV has become more affordable!
on September 28, 2022
Posted by: msumulong
Chromecast with Google TV has been around for a couple of years now. For those who aren’t familiar with the newer Chromecasts, it is no longer the black dangle with no remote wherein everything is cast fro your cell phone. The newer Chromecast is now white and has a remote which is a far cry from previous Chromecasts.
The newer Chromecasts now have the following features:
1. Google TV Interface wherein you can get personalized recommendations based on your
subscriptions and viewing habits. User profiles can be added too;
2. As mentioned earlier, the new Chromecast with Google TV has a remote which makes it easier for you to navigate through Google TV. Please note that you can still cast videos from your phone. And to make things easier, Google Assistant is available so you can do voice commands;
3. And for those with families, family friendly profiles can be setup so that age appropriate can only be watched coupled with parental controls as to limit viewing time; and
4. The Chromecast can be linked with your Nest Cam feed to see what’s going on around your home.
So for those who already have a Chromecast with Google TV, what are the differences? THE NEW CHROMECAST WITH GOOGLE TV IS ONLY IN FHD OR 1080P AND NOT 4K RESOLUTION AND IS SOLD AT A LOWER PRICE POINT. That said there are also additional changes to the new Chromecast. This Chromecast has Android TV 12 OS whereas my older 4K Chromecast has Android TV 10 OS. Also, This Chromecast does not support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos but still supports Doubt 5.1 surround. So that being said, who is is Chromecast for? Apparently Google wants to target people who do not have nor want a full high end home theater setup of those having older TVs. In my case I am using this Chromecast with my 1080p Insignia TV with a 2.0 soundbar attached which is located in my guest room. There is no need for me to have Dolby Vision and Atmos in this room. (But in my living room I have the 4k Chromecast as I have a Dolby Vision and Atoms enabled home theater setup.
And in spite of the limitations of this new Chromecast, I would still recommend this for others who do need nor want high end setup and also save money in the process.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good, but photo download problem
By rangerdon
This is a fine camera in many ways, but after losing some photos and a conversation with Panasonic, I learned that you must use the included panasonic software to download photos. (I use Picasa.) That makes the camera less than 5 star, since iPhoto would have the same problem - so if you buy this, and it is a fine piece of equipment, use their photofun software to downloard

Internet not exactly slow and processor not bad
November 24, 2016
The wifi performance is good. However I found it odd that when I used fast.com to measure speed, the phone registered 20 mbps which by itself pretty good if you're using a phone. But since I ran it simultaneously with my pc, my pc had a 70 mbps. Also the processor is not bad. It is not the latest and is commonly found in low end or rather entry level android phones. If you want a better phone you might want to consider the POP 4S which is similar but has an octa-core processor at 1.8 GHz, 2GB RAM 13 mp camera with a fingerprint sensor at $170. This sells for $150. So the $20 dollar difference is worth it. But the Black Friday deal sells at $50. So I got this phone. :)

Crash
By MarkTwain
I wanted to like this phone. The specs were just fine. The screen was just fine. The only complaint I had was that the phone reboots frequently. Fresh off a factory reset, it would constantly reboot before I could even set it up. As a software engineer, I am disappointed that software like this can even be released. This is not the way to showcase a brand and the reason for many returns on otherwise perfectly fine hardware.

Letting it rest seems to do the trick.
December 11, 2016
A lot of Alcatel models are like this including my Pop 4+. It seems that if you have a boot loop, let the phone rest for a few minutes then restart. do this even if you have wiped data. But this shouldn't happen at all especially for a new phone.

Unlocked dual sim android phone
By ASCX
Alcatel uses older underpowered cpu which slows performance compared to currently available android marshmallow phones. Alcatel does support adoptive SD card storage unlike LG and Samsung. Dual sim is a plus. Needs better processor to be competitive.

POP 4S has a faster processor
December 11, 2016
as mentioned in the title, if you need a faster phone get the 4S. It has a 1.8Ghz processer and 2GB RAM. There are three POP 4 phones - POP 4/POP 4 Plus/POP 4S wherein the 4 Plus is the mid-tier POP 4 phone. But for $49.99 during Black Friday, why not?

When it CAN be used its good, But it cant be used.
By Reona945
The phone keeps restarting even though the battery has more than enough charge. I've tried a hard reset and that hasnt helped. A factory reset stopped the cycle and i managed to use the phone for like 20 minutes and the phone restarted. When we ordered the phone, we also ordered a case from a third party. At first we thought the case was pressing the power button because it was a tight fit but it didnt seem right. There was also an incident i had in the past with the one touch evolve that was exactly the same. I would like to hear back and now if this can be fix :) Have a nice Day!

Reboot loop
By Proz
After having the phone for less than 1 month, I took it on vacation where I didn't have service. On the way my phone started to restart randomly. When I arrived at my destination the phone started into a reboot loop. If I caught it booting up quick enough occasionally I could navigate for a couple minutes. Even after I was able to get wifi connected and any other setting I thought could affect it such as gps location disabled the phone continued into the reboot loop. After researching on many blogs and andriod q and a sites I couldn't find a helpful answer to remedy the issue. I reluctantly did a factory reset but the loop continued. Finally, after returning back home I attempted to use the phone and it returned to "normal". I am very dissatisfied and I am generally very easy to please. I will be looking for another device to replace this asap.

seems to be the gps
December 20, 2016
I also did the factory reset to ease the symptoms. But it seems to be the gps module as then random reboots often occur when I am in my car and mobile. Also when I use Yelp and try to get directions, the phone restarts. No problem when I'm home though.

Good quality, but issue with 4G
By Praveen
I purchased this phone on black Friday because bestbuy was selling at $50, the phone had 2-yrs warranty, and Alcatel is one of the few good brands. I was excited about this purchase thinking that I paid only $50, but my excitement did vanish in a couple of days when I found that the phone restarts itself. After keeping an eye on the phone for a few days, I found that it restarts only when I drive or I am in a remote area. I googled about the issue and luckily found the reason behind restart. I am using T-mobile connection and had turned 4G LTE on. The 4G LTE service of T-mobile is not available in all areas of ABQ and therefore whenever I drove in areas where T-mobile signal was weak, phone used to restart. My phone never restarted in my school or in my house as T-mobile signal is excellent in these places. To fix the issue, I changed the network settings in my phone and set 3G as the default data service and after that it never restarted.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you, too.
My finding is - this phone supports 4G only if the strength of the signal is excellent, otherwise, it restarts itself. But I don't know why doesn't it ,like other brands, work in case of bad signal. My friend has samsung phone and she never had the restart issue though we go to all the places together in the same car.
All other features of this phone are like samsung phone - my the most favorite brand. I haven't observed any other issue and the phone works like charm. Speed, sound quality (the default music player doesn't have equalizer, so you might try VLC music player), picture+video quality, and call quality are just superb. Finally I started loving this phone.

Will this work on a north-facing covered porch?

As long as there is enough light not necessarily direct sunlight , shiuld still work. Though some solar devices tend to oberheat when under direct sunight like batteries, I cannot ascertain if this is the case. Mine uses only indirect sunlight.

Has anyone noticed it being hot? Not quite sure if it would be ok for my laptop.

It becomes very hot. As per my initial use it use somewhere between 60-70C but I've read someone measure it as high as 81C. I purchased a 1mm copper heatsink with thermal tape and attached it to this SSD. As per my measurement temperatures range from 34C to 46C. I've read somewhere 50C is still considered normal or acceptable. Note not purchase the 3mm heatsinks (the ones with fins) as they are designed for desktops. The 1mm copper heatsink fits perfectly on ,y HP Pavilion gaming laptop replacing the meatl bracket (with thermal paste) holding the old SSD.
