A Good scanner but with some limitations

The Epson - RapidReceipt RR-70W Wireless Mobile Receipt and Color Document Scanner is one of two portable receipt scanners released by Epson late last year with the other one being the RapidReceipt RR-60W. Both function the same save for the fact that the RR-70W has built in WiFi and a battery.
It is a sheet fed scanner so scanning books is out of the question. It has a rated speed of four pages per minute but upon use it seems to be six to eight pages per minute. Pretty fast in my opinion. It is a sleek scanner which is around a foot long, with a height and width of 1 ½ inches and almost two inches. And it weighs a little over half a pound. It is very portable indeed.
The RR-70W can either be connected via WiFi or through a micro-USB cable. Setting up the scanner via USB is as simple as installing the drivers from the Epson website and you can use practically any scanning software out there since it is a TWAIN compliant scanner.
Setting it up via WiFi is a different issue altogether. It took me several attempts to connect this via WiFi but found out later that you need to connect to a 2.4Ghz connection which the online manual does not indicate. And while this may be good for the most part, it will show its limitations if you use the scanner in a different location. Also, you can use a direct connection from your computer to the scanner but this will also limit you since you have to disconnect from your current WiFi connection. And in my experience I could not setup a direct connection to my computer whether it was manual, WPS or through PIN. The only way to connect is via USB. But that negates the value of WiFi. For this I am removing one star.
Arguably, the strongest point of this scanner is the included software. Most scanners especially those found in All-In-One printers have third-party software which are either limited in use, a trial version or simply usable in only one computer. The companion software for this is from Epson and it is not a trial version and can be installed in several computers. The OCR capabilities included are top-notch as you can export to MS Office files and also has capabilities to export to accounting software for receipts. (Unfortunately, I do not have accounting software so I was not able to test this. But exporting to MS Office is great as well as the usual PDF and JPG files.
If WiFi is not as important to you, I would consider the RR-60W as it is cheaper. But in spite of the RR-70’s flaws, having wireless is still a boon for productivity.

A great affordable pair of ANC headphones!

The Skullcandy - Hesh ANC - Over the Ear - Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones is Skullcandy’s budget or as Skullcandy calls it “everyday” ANC headphones with the Crusher ANC as its top model and the Venue ANC in between.
Being its most affordable ANC headphones, it is expected that build quality is plasticky. But unlike the Venue, the Hesh ANC has a rubbery texture to compensate for it. The headphones are foldable so it occupies less space when not in use. However as another cost cutting measure, it does not have a hard shell evo case, it only has a pouch which is not really a big deal for me. The good thing about the pouch is that there are compartments for its usb-C charging cable and 3.5mm cable for wired listening.
It boasts of a battery life of 22 hours which definitely lasts more than a day. I haven’t really tried the 22 hours. But since I’ve received my unit yesterday, I have been using this headphones which came with 80% power and so far it’s been holding up. This headphones unfortunately has no battery indicator and I am just relying on my Android phone’s battery life measuring tool.
And since I’ve been using this the whole day, the headphones has a snug fit and it quite comfortable thanks to the memory foam ear cuffs and also the cushion in the bar on top. Furthermore, sound isolation is already good. And with ANC turned on by default, it gives good noise cancellation. I always use my kitchen exhaust as a benchmark since I seldom ride on a plane. And the Hesh ANC is just slightly below the top rated headphones out there.
It has four mics for phone calls. And I’ve tested it for phone calls. Call quality is good but not that good. Still a strong performer. Ambient mode here is also good but not great. And if ANC is off, battery life can be extended up to 30 hours AFAIK.
Lastly it has forty mm drivers to deliver a decent sound signature Skullcandy is known for. Mids and highs are IMO on the right levels. Bass is slightly elevated which I like but not to the level of the Crusher series and definitely louder compared to the Venue which has minimal bass. Unfortunately, this headphones do not have an app wherein you can control eq settings. But being a budget model, this is kinda expected. But it does have Tile integration like most wireless Skullcandy devices.
For those wanting a decent but affordable pair of ANC headphones, the Skullcandy Hesh ANC is a high recommend.

A sleek double walled electric kettle

The GE - Electric Kettle with Mechanical Control may be one of many since it does not really differ from any other electric kettle. What I do like with the GE electric kettle is that like most if not all current GE electric kettle is that is has a sleek design and a double wall. I also like the fact that it has a removable cover giving it the semblance of a regular carafe which can stand on its own.
The double wall for me is a game changer as it is not only cool to the touch, it can also retain heat much longer. Operation like most electric kettles is pretty much forward. Just pour water in up to the fill line or at least two cups of water. Put in in the base and plug it in. Press the lever below the handle and just wait. It will turn off automatically when water is already hot. And by my estimate it can handle 1.5 liters of water so it may take four to five minutes to heat water.
I’d definitely recommend this kettle.

A capable road warrior's assistant

The Epson - EX3280 3LCD XGA Projector is notably a road warrior’s assistant like me especially with regard to making sales presentations. It is the successor to the EX3260 with the EX3280’s most noticeable difference being the brighter 3600 lumens it has up from the 3300 of its predecessor.
Still having the older XGA resolution 1024 x 768 with an aspect ratio of 4:3 it is still a worthy projector. It can still receive signals up to 1080p meaning it can still handle videos quite decently.
Varying not much from other models it has the basic inputs a USB cable wherein you have to install an app on your computer for the projector to work, a VGA input but most laptops being thin nowadays no longer have that port and the ubiquitous HDMI cable which can handle both video and audio. Do note that the package does not include any cable at all. This model however does include a carry-on bag albeit a bit flimsy. But at least you’ll have some protection right out of the box. However, I am dismayed that this and other models no longer have a cover whether it’s a snap-on cover or slide cover for the lens.
Controls for setting the projector are quite similar across models. So if you’ve been using projectors for some time, there is almost no need for you to really read the manual (available online) as its operation is pretty much intuitive even if you haven’t been using projectors. A remote is included in the model. Also, I wish a laser pointer feature should have been integrated in the remote unit as well.
I no longer tested the unit using the USB and VGA cables as HDMI is the way to go nowadays. And upon use, I am impressed of the brightness of this model being an entry to mid-range model. Back I the day a 2000 lumens model is something to brag about. This is quite handy more so for salespeople like me since presentations are often made in just about any room with a wall in lieu of a screen.
Being an XGA projector, the limitations can clearly be seen when using a computer. But since it is not much of a big deal for your usual slideshows, this decade old technology is still widely acceptable in the business world. Using it for video let’s say a training video from YouTube gives satisfactory performance. One thing to note though is that a 1080p projector may cost a little more than the price of this model and you may want to do your research first. But otherwise, this model is a good one for a mobile professional like me. If you intend to use this as part of your home theater, it can still perform but like I mentioned earlier do your research.

A powerhouse air filter!

The Blueair - Classic Series 680i 698 Sq. Ft. Air Purifier – White may look a dated air purifier but I tell you this air purifier is a powerhouse.
First it has the capacity to purify roughly 700 square feet of space.
Backed up by three filters, it is up to the task. These three filters are dual filter with one side being an air filter similar to air filters found in cars and the other side having a carbon filter. Having this type of filters enables the Blueair 680i filter VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds and PM2.5 which stands for Fine Particulate Matter up to 2.5 micrometers.

But overall, this is a very simple device to operate (Like I said it’s pretty much plug and play.) and not much really to say more about it save for the fact it does the job well. I’d highly recommend this unit.

Good espresso machine

The Cuisinart EM-15 Defined Espresso Machine is one of many Nespresso compatible machines out there. This essentially is for espresso lovers who don’t want the hassle of making espresso the traditional way. Using Nespresso or Nespresso-compatible cups, espresso afficionados simply has to put one cup and almost instantly, one would already have a single shot of espresso or a lungo at that.
But what differentiates this from the others. Well, it’s size is to be considered first. Measuring 13.5"(L) x 5.75"(W) x 9.5"(H), it doesn’t really take up much space but still can handle a 24 oz water container. And it’s quite simple to use. It has two buttons on the left and right which indicate whether you want a short single shot or a lungo. In the middle of these two buttons is the menu button which would enable you to change the volume of the coffee and the temperature of the water. Other options include a reset function and a screen showing the serial number and that’s all there is to it. While some may find this to simplistic, I find this enough for my needs.
And to add, there are reusable espresso cups for you to use to save you money. Unfortunately, I haven’t time to try this yet since I am still in the process of ordering a few. But that said, it is still nice to know that there is that option.

A great sounding 360 speaker

360° degree speakers have been around for quite sometime now . Anker is no exception. Under the Soundcore brand, Anker released the Flare in 2018 (and its sibling the Flare+). Now in 2020, Soundcore has released the Flare 2 (There is no Flare+ 2.). It still retains the 6.4 in height and a diameter of around 3.5 in. It still has the IPX 7 rating meaning that it can be submerge for 30-60 minutes under water but does not float. It also retains the mesh lining and on top you can find the controls. The main noticeable difference between the original Flare and Flare 2 is that there is now a top ring light.
The controls are also on the top and the includes the power switch, up and down volume controls and the light switch on/off switch. In the center is the button to pause/call button. In the portion you can find the USB-C power port. Note that there is not line-in port. On top of that is the bass boost button and a Bluetooth pairing button. And note that you can pair this with other speakers too.
Like other Soundcore speakers, the Flare 2 can be connected to an app which can control volume settings and light settings. And since the Flare 2 doesn’t come with a manual (just a quick start guide), an online manuel is available in the app.
As for sound quality the Flare 2 has a warm and crisp sound. Fidelity is on par with higher priced speakers. The bass sound however seems lacking even when bass boost is turned on. But fortunately there is a customizable equalizer on the app. So that should not be a concern.
Overall, the Soundcore Flare 2 is a steal given its price point and can give the branded speaker a run for the money. I’d highly recommend this speaker.

The Alienware - AW410K Wired Mechanical CHERRY MX Brown Switches Gaming Keyboard with RGB Back Lighting is a recent keyboard offering from Alienware. It is a standard sized full layout mechanical keyboard which is mainly plastic made. It is a Cherry MX Brown rated mechanical keyboard which is sort of a hybrid between gaming and typing. It offers a tactile feedback but yet has less noise which appelas to both types of users. But being an Alienware keyboard, this will always be touted as a gaming keyboard.
The keyboard has two USB connectors presumably to add more power. But having tested it on my gaming class desktop and laptop, suffice to say there is no need for me for additional power to use this keyboard.
There are no manuals included in the box. But upon initial connection the your PC, it automatically downloads the Alienware Command Center. While this may be a boon for some users as there is no need to search online for software, others may find it intrusive.
Usage of the software to customize the common features of a gaming keyboard are pretty much intuitive. But I pretty much prefer the lighting customizations of other branded keyboards as they have a simple color palette to choose from. But that’s just me.

Good adio but there are other options out there

True wireless earbuds seem to be the rage nowadays especially those with active noise cancelling, The Ausounds - AU Stream Hybrid True Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds is one such product.
Up front the AU Stream Hybrid seems to have a lot offer. Active Noise Cancelling, an IPX 5 rating, good battery life, fast Qi charging, a fast USB C port, and BT 5.0. It has the smallest case around. And upon initial use, sound and call quality were pretty good in spite of the codex supported is only AAC. So everything looks good. But this pair of earbuds also has some drawbacks.

First, while it does have BT 5.0, connection is spotty. I would have frequent dropouts even when my phone is with me that they have been quite annoying. And though it has good audio, the lack of a companion app to customize its settings limits its functionality. To change ANC settings, playback and call controls and even voice assistant settings are done by touch controls. However, the touch controls are flaky at best. Most other earbuds at this price range already have apps so that full functionality of the earbuds can be achieved even firmware updates. This feature is now dated.
And as far as ANC is concerned, it does work but is mediocre at best. While I do not expect mid to high pitched noise can be cancelled, the low frequency sounds are barely cancelled. A tight fitting noise isolation pair of earbuds can be comparable when the latter is playing music.
But what irritates me is that the charger does not perform as expected. The Qi charging feature is very erratic and does not seem to perform with fast 10W Qi chargers. And it seems to support 5W better. Further, the battery case seems to drain fast therefore the battery life does not seem to enable total playing time to 25 hours. You may have read in other reviews that the earbuds sometimes keep on playing even when they are put inside the case. I too have experienced this and I thought the earbuds were defective. But it seemed that it was due to the fast draining of the charger that it could no longer even charge the earbuds. I’ve cycled the charging of the case and it seems, battery drains fast.
While the Ausound Stream Hybrid has potential, its value proposition is severely limited by these drawbacks. A more popular brand of earbuds with more features, better performance and proven reliability can also be considered. This is a hardsell.

Fantastic mid-range gaming mouse

The ROCCAT Burst Pro 68g Extreme Lightweight 16K Optical Owl-Eye PC Gaming Mouse is the latest mouse offering from Roccat/Turtle Beach. And I could say that it is a fine mouse to use either for gaming or simply for everyday use.
First do note that it is touted as an extreme lightweight mouse. So gamers who would prefer mice with weights may be turned off by this since the heft is gone. Also, Roccat engineered this mouse this mouse with a symmetrical ergonomic shape which may not appeal again for gamers. But then again this would appeal to general users and to a certain degree left-handed gamers. Most gaming mice out there are designed to be for right-handed people.
It has a braided cable which Roccat calls Phantomflex. Regardless if that is a marketing ploy or not, I must say that it is much better than the usual rubber based cables in mice. It also boasts of a Titan Switch Optical which Roccat claims to be much better than straightforward mice with a rated capacity of 100 million clicks. But honestly, a few millions clicks in the lifetime of the mouse which is several years is already good for me. Still, it’s nice touch.
The mouse has a center button which is used to control cursor speed which is pretty much standard for gaming mice. On the left side it has two programmable buttons. And in order to do customization for the mouse you have to download the Roccat Swarm app. Here you can program mouse buttons, light sequences and even firmware.
Overall, the Roccat Burst Pro is a good mid-range mouse that would satisfy most gamers. The lacking features such as minimal button, light weight (but that’s actually by design), and symmetrical design may turn-off serious gamers, it is still one solid gaming mouse.

The wifi performance is good. However I found it odd that when I used fast.com to measure speed, the phone registered 20 mbps which by itself pretty good if you're using a phone. But since I ran it simultaneously with my pc, my pc had a 70 mbps. Also the processor is not bad. It is not the latest and is commonly found in low end or rather entry level android phones. If you want a better phone you might want to consider the POP 4S which is similar but has an octa-core processor at 1.8 GHz, 2GB RAM 13 mp camera with a fingerprint sensor at $170. This sells for $150. So the $20 dollar difference is worth it. But the Black Friday deal sells at $50. So I got this phone. :)

I wanted to like this phone. The specs were just fine. The screen was just fine. The only complaint I had was that the phone reboots frequently. Fresh off a factory reset, it would constantly reboot before I could even set it up. As a software engineer, I am disappointed that software like this can even be released. This is not the way to showcase a brand and the reason for many returns on otherwise perfectly fine hardware.

A lot of Alcatel models are like this including my Pop 4+. It seems that if you have a boot loop, let the phone rest for a few minutes then restart. do this even if you have wiped data. But this shouldn't happen at all especially for a new phone.

Alcatel uses older underpowered cpu which slows performance compared to currently available android marshmallow phones. Alcatel does support adoptive SD card storage unlike LG and Samsung. Dual sim is a plus. Needs better processor to be competitive.

as mentioned in the title, if you need a faster phone get the 4S. It has a 1.8Ghz processer and 2GB RAM. There are three POP 4 phones - POP 4/POP 4 Plus/POP 4S wherein the 4 Plus is the mid-tier POP 4 phone. But for $49.99 during Black Friday, why not?

The phone keeps restarting even though the battery has more than enough charge. I've tried a hard reset and that hasnt helped. A factory reset stopped the cycle and i managed to use the phone for like 20 minutes and the phone restarted. When we ordered the phone, we also ordered a case from a third party. At first we thought the case was pressing the power button because it was a tight fit but it didnt seem right. There was also an incident i had in the past with the one touch evolve that was exactly the same. I would like to hear back and now if this can be fix :) Have a nice Day!

After having the phone for less than 1 month, I took it on vacation where I didn't have service. On the way my phone started to restart randomly. When I arrived at my destination the phone started into a reboot loop. If I caught it booting up quick enough occasionally I could navigate for a couple minutes. Even after I was able to get wifi connected and any other setting I thought could affect it such as gps location disabled the phone continued into the reboot loop. After researching on many blogs and andriod q and a sites I couldn't find a helpful answer to remedy the issue. I reluctantly did a factory reset but the loop continued. Finally, after returning back home I attempted to use the phone and it returned to "normal". I am very dissatisfied and I am generally very easy to please. I will be looking for another device to replace this asap.

I also did the factory reset to ease the symptoms. But it seems to be the gps module as then random reboots often occur when I am in my car and mobile. Also when I use Yelp and try to get directions, the phone restarts. No problem when I'm home though.

I purchased this phone on black Friday because bestbuy was selling at $50, the phone had 2-yrs warranty, and Alcatel is one of the few good brands. I was excited about this purchase thinking that I paid only $50, but my excitement did vanish in a couple of days when I found that the phone restarts itself. After keeping an eye on the phone for a few days, I found that it restarts only when I drive or I am in a remote area. I googled about the issue and luckily found the reason behind restart. I am using T-mobile connection and had turned 4G LTE on. The 4G LTE service of T-mobile is not available in all areas of ABQ and therefore whenever I drove in areas where T-mobile signal was weak, phone used to restart. My phone never restarted in my school or in my house as T-mobile signal is excellent in these places. To fix the issue, I changed the network settings in my phone and set 3G as the default data service and after that it never restarted.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you,too.
My finding is - this phone supports 4G only if the strength of the signal is excellent, otherwise, it restarts itself. But I don't know why doesn't it ,like other brands, work in case of bad signal. My friend has samsung phone and she never had the restart issue though we go to all the places together in the same car.
All other features of this phone are like samsung phone - my the most favorite brand. I haven't observed any other issue and the phone works like charm. Speed, sound quality (the default music player doesn't have equalizer, so you might try VLC music player), picture+video quality, and call quality are just superb. Finally I started loving this phone.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you,too.

I called tech support and was informed that there is an issue with this phone. Alcatel promptly replaced my phone with newer firmware and presumably hardware and the problems of random reboots have gone.

I brought this phone for $50 during Thanksgiving and this phone was delivered to me after 30 days but I thought OK its late but may be worth it.
I start using this phone and haven't made even 5 calls this phone restarting by itself every min, so i did factory reset and tried all other suggestions from online forums but nothing helped. Since this is under warranty i had to ship it Alcatel repair center but on my own pocket expenses, AH!.
Alcatel should cover shipping fees as its their fault that their phone is faulty.
Alcatel don't even have their store/facility locations where i can go give my phone for repair physically rather paying for shipping.
I would also recommend that Best Buy has brand name and they should NOT allow low quality brands/product to be sold on their site.

I also bought mine during Thanksgiving and had the same problem. I called Alcatel and they acknowledged that there is a hardware problem and emailed a shipping label for FedEx. Within a week or so I received a replacement phone via UPS. Do note I did pay for shipping and replacement of my phone. In fairness to Alcatel this replacement phone does not have the random reboots anymore.

hello i was considering purchasing last years model but i read numerous reviews mentioning that the touch controls would malfunction in cold weather has this issue been adressed?
No one really knows for sure as it is summer. But since Sony doesn't say anything about this, I guess it's safe to assume that the issue hasn't been really solved for now.
