The Blu-ray transfer of this show is simply stunning in quality, especially noticeable since I was replacing old VHS copies. The cast is excellent, with Scott Bakula outstanding in sharing his joy and curiosity as the starship Enterprise undertakes its first missions. Stories are good, if sometimes low-key, and there are masses of extras on each disc, including deleted scenes.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One [6 Discs] [Blu-ray]
"Brave" is another Disney triumph - a great story, with compelling characters and lovely animation that's even better in 3D. Not quite as good as "Tangled" - but what is?
What's great about it: Great story, wonderful characters, superb animation
Tim Allen saves Christmas three times in this triple feature of the family-friendly holiday comedies The Santa Clause, The Santa Clause 2, and The Santa Clause 3.
"The Santa Clause" has become a holiday classic - we watch it to get us in the spirit at the start of the season. It's clever, funny and brilliantly acted and realized. The second film is still good - though less so - but the third is pretty dreadful.
What's great about it: Clever idea beautifully realized
What's not so great: Gets progressively less entertaining
This is one of the classic stories from the series, with gun battles, paranoid plots, aliens who may or may not be invading the Earth and the Doctor in full swing trying to stave off disaster.
The final Hartnell serial to be released on DVD is a wild adventure romp. Shrunk down to an inch tall, the travelers have to face the perils of an average household to get home again. The reconstructed "missing" episode is a special treat.
What's great about it: Beautifully written and acted
What's not so great: The odd shaky special effect

Doctor Who: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [2 Discs] [DVD]
Despite the title, this is not the greatest show in any galaxy - it's just a drawn-out meander filled with thin characters and a horribly embarrassing performance from Sylvester McCoy. It's main draw is that it's the last McCoy to be issued on DVD.
What's great about it: Produced under difficult circumstances
This is probably one of the least interesting Dalek stories, but even so it has some great moments - the Daleks creating new weapons when their usual ray guns don't work; the alien city with its metallic roots.
What's great about it: The Daleks
What's not so great: A feeling that we've seen it all before

Doctor Who: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [2 Discs] [DVD]
"The Krotons" gives us Patrick Troughton at his zany best, with lots of humor, plenty of mystery and good guests. The Krotons themselves are terrible to look at - really silly and cheap.
What's great about it: Fun story with good acting
What's not so great: Probably the worst-designed monsters ever
The first film matching of the obvious - Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper. It would be done again in "Murder By Decree" almost as well, but this version has excellent acting - John Neville is a wonderful Holmes, and Anthony Quayle is always enjoyable - oddly enjoyable jazz scoring and a terrific pace. Sadly, there are no extras, and the "horror" makeup is so bad the actress has to hold it in place at the end of the film!
The first season of "Sherlock" was interesting and innovative, updating the format from Victorian to modern London. The second season is more of the same, which is the problem. It is simply more of the same. The same jokes, the same problems, and the writing isn't as smart as it thinks it is. If you've seen season one, there's nothing new here.
What's great about it: Updating Sherlock Holmes for the modern age
What's not so great: The mysteries aren't so mysterious
