There is a reason why Black Christmas has lasted so long. It predates Halloween and Friday the 13th by several years as it is an early inspiration for the later rise of "slasher" films. It uses innovative camera tricks and gives us the killer's POV. And it takes the sacred holiday of Christmas and interjects it with real-life morality conflicts of its characters.
The transfer on this edition is great, and is coupled with some great features. A 20-minute candid interview with Margot Kidder stands out. Also, a documentary featuring remembrances from the cast and crew is quite informative. Top it off with a new 5.1 mix, and you have a nice blu-ray bundle. Great to add to your collection!
What's great about it: Quite possibly the best horror film ever made.
What's not so great: i wish original version would be release on Blu Ray

The sequel to one of the most successful independent horror films of all time, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 has been given a well-executed presentation for this DVD release. The film has been given a letterboxed transfer in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which is also enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The original English-language soundtrack appears in Dolby Digital 5.1, while alternate dubbed tracks in Spanish and French have been mastered in Dolby Digital Surround. No subtitles have been included, though the feature is closed-captioned in English. Bonus materials include a commentary track from director Joe Berlinger, commentary on selected scenes from composer Carter Burwell, and a performance from the rock band Godhead. This disc also features CD and DVD-ROM content; the CD side features Burwell's original score as well as songs from Godhead and Tony Iommi, while the DVD-ROM material includes biographies of the cast and crew, notes on the film's production, and links to related Internet websites.

Deserves a 2nd chance
on September 23, 2009

Last weekend, i got a chance to watch, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch Project 2 on the Syfy channel, expecting absolutely nothing except a bad flick that might have a few good moments. I cannot believe how well-done this movie is, how it exceeded my expectations in every way. The acting is especially solid, by characters that you really care about.
The original Blair Witch Project was spoiled by all the hype as "the scariest movie of all time," and I frequently thought how disappointed I was with it. This movie makes it all better. i mean, this really made a excellent movie, folks. I am, by no means, obsessed with the Blair Witch mythos and I realize that it's all fake, but I do know a good movie when I see one. I can't understand for the life of me how someone can watch this movie and say that they don't like it. I thought that the way these five arrogant kids were completely manipulated (by the Blair Witch or by themselves) and reduced to blubbering idiots was masterfully done. I really think that most people who have watched this film simply "don't get it", which is sad. Who killed Erica and locked her in the closet? Was Tristine really channeling the Blair Witch? Did Kim really kill the clerk in the store? How did those police files get into Jeff's filing cabinet? The genius of this film, in my mind, is that we really don't know what the heck happened to these five people: Did the Blair Witch possess Tristine and cause her to lead the others on a killing spree or was this all just what Stephen thought it was all along: Group Hysteria?
I enjoyed the story and loved the atmosphere that Berlinger has created, and I also thought the actors were just fine. Well, almost all of them: Stephen Barker Turner really didn't do a lot for me but I thought the emotions he displayed in his interrogation scene near the end of the film were fantastic, as I bought into his performance completely. Erica Leerhson, besides being quite easy on the eyes, was convincing as a bratty self-centered Wiccan. Kim Director was also excellent as the Goth character and is it just me or does this woman have the prettiest eyes you've ever seen in your life? Tristine Skyler also wowed me with her 'transformation' near the end of the film. That leaves Jeffrey Donovan and I felt that his performance was just brilliant, as I totally bought the emotions his character was going through and I think he has an excellent screen presence. Also, the look on his face when he finds Erica in the closet is one of the scariest reactions I've Ever seen from Anyone in a movie.
Don't get the wrong idea - I'm not saying that this film is a masterpiece, as it does have lots of room for improvement. I wasn't crazy about the random images of gore placed in the film (against the director's wishes), Lanny Flaherty was way over the top as the sheriff, and the scenes in the beer store were just plain silly. The problem here is that this is not really a "horror" movie, it's more of a psychological mess up than anything, which is a type of movie I really enjoy. You also need to think when you watch this, as a lot more is happening in the film than you may realize on the first viewing. What I am saying here is that this film is in no way anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
By the way. i am not attacking anybody on here.. i was just talking about how this Film received from fans, and reviewers. across the internet boards. if i listen to there comments. i wouldn't have given this movie a chance. which i think most should do
What's great about it: Very well written story
What's not so great: Not as bad as peoples say

Interesting tale on the Bell Witch
on September 23, 2009
Posted by: Twlightfann
I first heard of the Bell Witch when the movie "An American Haunting" was released in theaters in 2005. I did a little research on the internet, and found a forum discussion in the Paranormal section of [...]. There wasn't much in the way of information about the haunting, but we are talking about an event that is almost 200 years old, and you can expect the information to be a bit scarce.
So, when I received a copy of "An American Haunting" to review, I didn't know what to expect. But I was excited, after all, movies about true-life hauntings are a necessity for certain times of the year (A Hallow's Eve), aren't they!
The movie doesn't waste any time in getting to the action, and right away I found myself perched on the edge of the couch, wondering what was going to happen. And the entire movie was like that. It wasn't until the very end that I had one of those "Ah ha" moments and received a bit of clarity about the story-line.
Set in rural Tennessee in the early 1800s, "An American Haunting" is based on the true story of a spirit who repeatedly brutally attacks the Bell family (and actually causes the death of one of the family members). The movie stars Donald Sutherland as John Bell, Sissy Spacek as his wife Lucy and Rachel Hurd-Wood as their daughter Betsy. Their story starts off with John Bell having a heated argument with a woman who is rumored to be a witch. After their argument, things start happening at the Bell home. At first it's just small noises, but soon the spirit encounters become violent, and center on the daughter, Betsy.
I'm glad I wasn't too familiar with the legend of the Bell Witch, because I didn't worry about whether the story was following the legend or not, and I just enjoyed the movie for what it was -- haunting and scary! And I think that just knowing it was based on a real haunting made it even scarier.
The acting was great, and the scenery was absolutely stunning! The visual effects were believable and not too crazy. The story itself was not just a horror movie, but truly a psychological thriller that kept you wondering until the end what was going on.
A great thriller anytime, but definitely now part of my Halloween scary movie watching tradition, "An American Haunting" is a great movie for anyone who loves a good ghost story; especially those stories of real-life hauntings.
What's great about it: Haunting from Start to Finish
What's not so great: Wish it would be release on Blu Ray

Where is Season 2?
on September 23, 2009

I am not writing a review for this DVD set, although after I purchase it I may do so to comment on the quality and special features. But just so everyone knows, I definitely recommend getting this set,it truly is a must-have! I religiously watched every show when it aired on TV in 1996. It was so well-written and the acting was just perfect. (They couldn't have picked a more fitting cast) and there was always a point to the plot. Even though the storyline is about these members of a (secret) group fighting evil in the world (its not the hackneyed, fighting evil type, it really is tastefully done) it blends elements of sci-fi, horror, suspense, and it has supernatural components of history. (The special effects were also done very well) If you're not normally into that sort of thing, then this series would definitely atleast raise your interests. And if you are, you must already know about this awesome show or atleast have heard about it. It was great from the beginning to end, it couldn't have been better written and I wished they continued it longer. And for the people who didn't know, the creators who thought up of The Outer Limits (the new series) were the same creators for Poltergeist The Legacy. (I liked TOL also, but I think that this show far outshines that one) I had been waiting almost forever for this series to come out on DVD and now its finally here=)
But one question. Potergeist the Legacy ended after 4 seasons?. so where are the best. because it would be great to add those. to my collection as well as those. who loves this series
What's great about it: a fun entertaining paranormal series
What's not so great: Poltergeist the Legacy had 4 seasons. where are the rest of them?

Here we have one of the scariest films of the 80's - a classic. Who can forget "Carrie Anne, Don't go into the light!!" Films of this age are hit and miss with blu ray transfers. Sometimes the quality is subpar and sometimes the film is so dated however good the transfer it lacks any true oomph. Luckily neither of these two things happen here.
The blu ray transfer shines. Colors are crisp and there is no grain visible from age. One might think that the type of visual effects used this long ago might not transfer well but they certainly do. They pop. Added to this brilliant picture is audio that keeps the tension mounting and will have you jumping at every scare. Dialogue is strong and audio effects utilize all speakers to their max.
It is great to see that such a classic film has not aged and is just as effective today. This blu ray disc also comes in a special hardcover case that has a great booklet about the film. For those who remember the film definitely purchase it on blu ray in its new glory. Those who have never seen it will get a definite treat.
What's great about it: This movie was very chilling
What's not so great: Nothing i honesty love it

I am really a novice gamer--I don't know anything about frame rates or anything technical. I just love playing this game.. I guess if you're really serious about gaming you are bothered by little flaws but I just chalk that up to the fact that--hey--it's a game. So what if all my bench players are 00 and their faces look a little scary, this is as close as most of us are going to get to playing in the NFL. (I read one review where the guy actually complained that every time they show the QB on the phone it's always the safety behind him--c'mon, dude!)
The graphics are beautiful, the player movement is much improved over last year, and the more deliberate speed of the game, in my opinion makes it much more enjoyable. All I know is that I am a middle-aged Walter Mitty and every time my safety lays the lumber on the ball carrier and knocks the rock lose or Kurt drops a perfect pass right in Larry Fitzgerald's chest while he streaks down the sideline it makes me laugh out loud like a kid.
The only criticism I hsave is that it is too easy to score on Pro level, even with the cpu sliders jacked all the way up.Second--if I try to play on a higher level, I get sacked on almost every play. I went back and looked at the instant replay on some of the sacks and I swear to god it's like my O lineman are trying to get out of the defenders' way. They don't block at all, and I am passing with guys in my face on Every play.Yet when I am on D, my lineman get stuffed at the line and fall down half the time. Very frustrating. The QB avoidance move doesnt help at all. I step up and get nailed anyway. I guess I need practice time.It is a blast though. You really have to read the defense as you step up to the line and adjust or you will get stuffed.
If you love the NFL and you are on the fence, I would recommend it without reservation.
What's great about it: Great Gameplay
What's not so great: Not not gamers are online

Solid TNA PPV
on September 23, 2009
Posted by: Twlightfann
Lethal Consequences & Eric Young vs. Motor City Machine Gunz & Sheik Abdul Bashir - This was a great opener that was filled with fast athletics, cool spots, and great double team synchronized moves while still telling the ongoing story regarding Eric Young at that time. A fun opening match & the right way to kick off a PPV.
Monster's Ball Match: Taylor Wilde vs. Daffney - Even thought this was the first ever female version of this match, this was easily the weakest Monster's Ball ever as it was really too short & didn't live up the "hardcore" standards that this match is known for outside of that one bump Daffney took on the trash can at the end that was really nasty. Everything afterwards involving Abyss & Dr. Stevie was more interesting here than that the match itself.
X Division Champion Suicide vs. Daniels - Daniels come off like he was wrestling a clone of himself (ironic, isn't it) as this wasn't like the opening match where it was a fast paced "spotty" X Division match but the style of being more focused on having a grounded wrestling match. If you can get past the ending, it was a solid encounter. I wonder after this match if we'll get a 3 way dance with Curry Man too?
TNA Knockouts Champion Angelina Love vs. Awesome Kong - Love was all alone on this one after Kong took out the Beautiful People & even Cute Kip in stretcher matches after Lockdown. Based on the buildup to this match, you were expecting Kong to completely hurt her but you didn't get that here as Love actually did a good job of selling that she was scared & running away from her like she was being chased by Jason Voorhees at Crystal Lake. Eventhough I thought the ending was a bit "eh", this was one of those matches where the wrestling wasn't much but did tell a nice story for what they did.
Samoa Joe vs. Kevin Nash - This match was just like the earlier match where it wasn't about the wrestling but more about the story that was being told as this wasn't like their really good match at Turning Point but the purpose here was to build up Samoa Joe and this was booked the right way in that respect...and at least this was a match unlike how Destination X was really just a segment.
Team 3D Invitational Tag Team Tournament Finals: Beer Money vs. British Invasion - After watching this, I just have one question to ask...who is that Brutus Magnus imposter? I'm just joking but for anyone who's seen Brutus performance here & compared it to his previous matches in TNA...it's like they are two completely different people as this was the best he's ever looked. This was an overall fun & entertaining match that went back & forth between both teams with Various highlights including Beer Money putting their own little twist on the "skin the cat" top rope spot along with Team 3D's interaction with Don West on commentary. Again, a very fun match.
TNA Legends Champion A.J. Styles vs. Booker T - This was very similar to their Destination X in that this was an average match as they did work well together but never seemed to leave "first gear" & had the same pace throughout the bout. The ending however hurt the match more than helped it as it made the whole thing look like this was really nothing more than to continue the storyline between the two M.E.M. women in Sharmell & Jenna. Solid average match with a hurtful dull ending.
Ultimate Sacrifice Match: TNA Champion Mick Foley vs. Sting vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. Kurt Angle - Now the setup for this is real simple in that whoever is the victor will win whatever the loser sacrificed going into the match...Mick Foley put up his TNA Title, Jeff Jarrett put up his voting shares as TNA founder, Sting put up his career, and Angle put up his leadership role in the Main Event Mafia. Various highlights include an
anklelock/mandible claw submission move at one point, Mick Foley pulling off an act that an ex-tag team partner & "electrifing" superstar used to do at the announce table, how Kurt Angle came after Foley at the annouce table, Kurt applying a double ankle lock at one point, and the interaction between Foley/Sting & Angle/Jarrett. This was your typical multiman "free for all" match in TNA where it was non-stop action & fun to watch.
In the end, this was a good PPV from TNA that wasn't on the level of one of their bigger shows (LockDown, Bound For Glory, Slammiversary) but was solid for a "B show" & did it's job in building up to next months Slammiversary so this is one I would check out.
What's great about it: Ultimate Sacrifice Match was my favorite
What's not so great: AJ Styles vs Booker T match was disappointing

Great Addition to the Resident Evil Franchise
on September 23, 2009
Posted by: Twlightfann
As far as the movies go I really liked the first one and thought the other two were alright. I won't go into any further detail because whether you like a movie or not is subjective. I'm sure you know what type of movies these are if you are considering purchasing them, and I would recommend them if you like horror/sci-fi/action adventure films. I think the most important thing I could share with you is the picture quality of these blu-ray discs which is fantastic. They look great on a big screen hi-def tv and I would highly recommend them if that is what is most important to you.
What's great about it: the trilogy box set is great for it's price
What's not so great: Resident Evil apocalypse

Good Zombie film
on September 23, 2009
Posted by: Twlightfann
This movie is based on a horror/survival videogame by Capcom. Now I got that out of the way, Resident Evil is a pretty good zombie movie, successfully adapted from the game by Paul W.S. Anderson. This film is everything House of the Dead wanted to be but couldn't. The zombies move at a decent pace as does the movie and there are plenty of "BOO!" moments, but nothing too scary. Gorehounds will be happy and Zombaholics will have fun playing guess the reference, such as the elevator scene which recalls the original Dawn of the Dead. The acting is good as far as zombie movies go and the cinematography is great. A must have for any zombie fan.
What's great about it: You will enjoy it for what's it worth
What's not so great: the sequels after are disappointing
