Fans Should Look For the Old Special Edition
on April 20, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
True fans of 'Stargate' will want to bypass this Blue-Ray disc and stick with the much better 2-disc special edition dvd that came out several years ago, had both the theatrical and director's cuts of the film, as well as several bonus features oddly not seen here on this new so-called 'next generation' release.

A Beautiful Mess of A Movie!
on April 20, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
A fan of the original theatrical version, I was quite frustrated when Ridley Scott started feeling it was necessary to release several different cuts of the film, starting back in the early 1990's. Overbudget and indecisive, as has often been the case for many of his projects, Scott apparently lost control over the film at a certain point. Therefore, 'Blade Runner' is a visually beautiful film that is just a mess to make any sense of, even more so now that it has 5 different versions. Why anyone would spend big bucks on this dvd set is beyond me.

Good, but Unnecessary If You Already Have on Dvd
on April 20, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
This Blue Ray version of 'Edward Scissorhands' does present a very nice visual display, one that is noticeably better than the standard-def dvd releases of the film. However, certain bonus features that were evident on previous dvd releases of the film are evidently missing. Therefore, whether or not to buy this item is up in the air.

Good, but Unnecessary If You Already Have on Dvd
on April 20, 2008

This Blue-Ray version of 'Die Hard' presents some really good picture quality, the only question being - is it that much better than standard dvd as to warrant spending $35-$40 if you already own it? Probably not. While this disc faithfully ports over all the special features from previous 'Die Hard' dvd editions, it really offers nothing new in terms of extras. So the bottom line is, do you feel like spending a good chunk of money for moderately improved picture quality that will only be really noticeable on a high quality large widescreen HDTV? I'd personally recommend just buying the special 2-disc standard edition dvd and saving yourself about $20.

Missing Some Bonus Features
on April 20, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
Given that this Blue-Ray release is only marginally better than its standard dvd counterpart in terms of image quality, and because some of the bonus features available on many of the standard dvd releases are missing, I simply cannot recommend that anyone bother paying good money for this item, especially if they already own a version or versions of the previous dvd releases.

Missing Several Bonus Features of the Regular Dvd
on April 20, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
I love this film, but I'm just not a huge fan of this Blue-Ray transfer, to me it doesn't seem all that great. Add in the fact that many of the bonus features (which graced the special edition dvd back in 2001) are missing here, really doesn't make this title worth the money. Die hard fans will want to try and get a hold of the now out-of-print special edition released back in 2001.

Bob Clark's perennial holiday favorite A Christmas Story gets the two-disc special-edition treatment from Warner Bros. on this release. The film itself is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Clark along with stars Peter Billingsley and Melinda Dillon. The second disc contains original recordings of Jean Shepherd, whose work formed the basis for the film and who narrates the film; a making-of documentary; interactive trivia; a pair of featurettes; and the original theatrical trailer. This is a solid disc that will be enjoyed by fans of the film.

Good Holiday Entertainment

This is a good Christmas movie, and while it isn't one of my favorites, it still is worth a watch and has amassed quite a large following over the years. This 2-disc special edition is pretty good and is sure to please fans.

Special features included with this widescreen anamorphic (2.35:1) DVD include Dolby 5.1 remastering, a feature-length audio commentary by the director, a music-only audio track, audio outtakes, screen tests of three of the stars, two scenes deleted from the final theatrical version, two trailers, one television spot, and no less than three behind-the-scenes featurettes: "The Magic Behind the Cape (Special Effects)," "Making Superman: Filming the Legend (Production and Release)," and "Taking Flight: The Development of Superman (Preproduction)." Audio options are English (Dolby Digital 5.1), music-only (Dolby Digital 5.1), and subtitles in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

A relatively bare release of the second in the Superman series, with just a theatrical trailer, some cast and crew notes, and an extra language track to spice up this dual-layer, single-sided disc. The main menu includes music and has an autoplay function built in, but no animation. The movie has been given an anamorphic transfer at 2.35:1 from a fairly low-contrast print. No attempt was made to restore the material, and while the print seems to be without scratches and major flaws, it also appears a little washed out in places; most of the print is well balanced in terms of color, however, though with somewhat cool flesh tones. Blacks are nice and solid, with good detail. The print is fairly sharp throughout, with some moments of softness. The transfer also seems to be free of artifacting and edge enhancement. Bitrate hovers around the 5.5 Mbps range. The Dolby 2.0 Surround is solid work, with some nice effects, though not very much directional and atmospheric effort. High end seems a little limited, and it's a bit weak in the bass end (and there is some audible distortion in the lower mid-range in a few scenes), but overall it works well. The French-language track is mono and features a good voice cast with poor-quality matching; overall, this track is a bit harsh. Subtitles are available in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The trailer looks good, but sounds terrible. The feature has 37 chapter stops, and the disc is packaged in a snapcase.

Only For Superman Fans

The first Superman film was truly great, this sequel however, is not quite up to par but will be enjoyed and appreciated by fans of the comic book hero. Good widescreen transfer, but nothing in terms of bonus.

Is the third time really the charm? It may just be with 1994's Stargate, released for the third time in this "Ultimate Edition." Artisan is known for continually updating their discs, but this two-disc set is still impressive in many ways. Both DVDs have the film -- the first with the 128-minute director's cut and the second with the 121-minute theatrical version -- and, for the most part, they look fantastic. The 2.35:1 image, finally anamorphic, really shines. Colors are represented as they should be and detail is constantly strong. The predominant gold tones really stand out, and distracting elements are kept to an absolute minimum. While that is good, the sound takes this set a step further. Both Dolby Surround EX and DTS 6.1 ES tracks are offered, and they are intense. Surrounds are used extensively, and to great effect, as is the thunderous bass that will surely test any good sound system. At the same time, the quieter moments, including dialogue, are never drowned out. Where the film falters is the supplements, which are good, but it's questionable whether they're "ultimate." The director's cut does include a good scene-specific commentary track from director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. These two have a history together and enjoy the work they do, as is obvious from their comments on this track. Also on this disc is the brief featurette "Is there a Stargate?" consisting of an interview with Chariots of the Gods? author Erich Von Däniken. For a popcorn movie, his theories are treated all a little too seriously, though it's still enjoyable to watch. The second disc, with the theatrical cut, doesn't have a commentary, but it does have a 22-minute documentary, entitled "The Making of Stargate: Creating a Whole New World." Other than a very annoying narration, it does offer some insight into the production, though it never goes too far in depth. Interviews with a number of crew members are included, but oddly enough, not the main two, Emmerich or Devlin. Finishing things off are two theatrical trailers and a fairly extensive biography and filmography section, as well as some lengthy production notes. Ultimate Edition may be something of an overstatement, but fortunately, the pluses outweigh the minuses with this release.

Decent Sci-Fi Entertainment
on April 20, 2008

'Stargate' is one of those movies that had incredible potential to be outstanding, but for some reason turned out to be just ok. This is decent entertainment, and is worth a viewing, but purchasing this film is probably for big fans only. Good transfer and extras, but not as much material is offered as on the special edition dvd that was released back around 2000.
