This engaging comedy may be an action-adventure, but it's also a love story between Harry Tasker Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Helen Jamie Lee Curtis. True Lies incorporates spectacular special effects along with comedy and romance, and it's a winning combination. Sidekick Tom Arnold is just smart-mouthed enough to keep Harry in line and under cover. Director James Cameron has worked with Schwarzenegger in many films, and they all have a familiar feel to them. Bill Paxton as the sleazy used car salesman is also a Cameron regular and perfect for the part. A Fox release in anamorphic widescreen, the True Lies DVD includes a Dolby 5.1 Surround audio track in English and French, as well as subtitles in English and Spanish. The sound and picture are both excellent. The biggest disappointment with this DVD is the lack of special features. The only bonus footage is the original theatrical trailer. There are no bios, documentaries, or even outtakes in this release, and the absence is especially lacking in comparison to other releases that include so much extra footage. True Lies is an excellent film, but the lack of special features is a detriment to the DVD.

Corny, But Fun

'True Lies' is a really corny movie, but the good comedic performances make it worthwhile. Definitely one of Schwarzenegger's better movies. Widescreen.

For a brief period in the early '90s, Sylvester Stallone attempted to make himself a viable comedic lead. Widely considered to be the most disastrous of these films, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the standard making-of featurette, an alternate ending for the film, and the theatrical trailer. This is an inexpensive title that will be of interest primarily to hardcore Stallone fans or those with a taste of infamous cinematic turkeys.

Incredibly Bad Movie, But Better than Expected Dvd
on April 30, 2008

'Stop or My Mom Will Shoot' is probably Sylvester Stallone's worse film ever ('Rhinestone' would be a close second). However, this is a very well put together dvd considering the quality of the film. Widescreen with a few notable bonuses.

Decent Action Movie
on April 30, 2008

'Broken Arrow' is by no means a bad film. It has some good action sequences and a fair storyline. It just doesn't stand out as an exceptional experience when compared to some other better films of the genre. Decent Blue-Ray release here, but might not be worth it considering the regular dvd is only $6.99.

John Woo's first big-budget Hollywood film, Broken Arrow, comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. One English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a second English track and a French soundtrack are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Extra features include the original theatrical trailer. Genre enthusiasts and Woo fans will want to view this disc, but there might not be enough on it to interest others.

This sequel to the popular Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle centers on the exploits of David Sloan (Sasha Mitchell) the younger brother of the two fighters (Van Damme and Dennis Alexio) who died in the first installment. As this episode begins, David has given up competition and is running a kickboxing school for underprivileged urban kids. His life changes abruptly when the villainous fight manager who murdered his brother shows up and forces him back into the ring. Fortunately, David's Zen master shows up for spiritual and moral support. The ensuing fight scenes are quite bloody and violent.

Bad Sequel and Dvd
on April 30, 2008

'Kickboxer 2' is a sequel that just fails miserably in trying to recreate any of the magic of the Van Damme original. Not only that, but this dvd is not particularly good in terms of quality. Full-screen only, skip it.

After almost 15 years comes Stripes: The Extended Cut, featuring 18 minutes of deleted scenes long thought to be extinct in the Salt Mine archives of good old Hollywood. Columbia Home Entertainment presents Ivan Reitman's hilarious military comedy that boosted enlistments and provided Bill Murray with an early hit under his belt around the time of his SNL years. The movie itself has been given a needed face-lift, with an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen transfer and a high-definition 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack that is a step and a half up from the shoddy presentations of old. With the option of watching the theatrical cut or the extended cut, with onscreen pop-ups that signal each cut scene, the DVD goes a long way to present both versions in all their glory. Six deleted scenes are presented, including the infamous seven-minute Columbian airdrop scene along with another racy scene with Murray and none other than late-'70s/early-'80s heartthrob P.J. Soles. While most of the scenes are arguably unnecessary, it's good to see that they're all quite funny and work in and out of the finished film. Extra care was obviously put into them, with Reitman himself tackling a few scenes again in the editing room just to make sure the right takes and comedic rhythms were worked out this time. Those stories and many others are vividly told both in the fun commentary with the director and writer/producer Dan Goldberg and the hour-long documentary that's culled from interviews with much of the main cast, including Judge Reinhold and a bizarre black-lit interview with the usually reclusive Murray. With the original theatrical trailer rounding out the list of extras, the Stripes: Extended Cut DVD is a loving tribute to an '80s classic that has cemented its place in comedy history, and with this version, is now able to entertain in vastly new ways for the young and old alike.

Bill Murray gives his usual good performance in this comedy about joining the army. Good dvd and bonus features.

Jeremy Kagan's family-friendly adventure drama The Journey of Natty Gann comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles, but the soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, marking this as a pedestrian release from Disney/Buena Vista that will be of little interest to anyone other than a genre enthusiast.

Great Movie, Poor Dvd
on April 30, 2008

'The Journey of Natty Gann' is a very touching and heartwarming tale that the whole family can enjoy. A movie like this deserves better dvd treatment than it has been given here by Disney. Nonetheless, still recommended!

This fantasy-comedy for the whole family gets a respectable presentation for its release on DVD. Little Monsters has been transferred to disc in pan-and-scan format at the full-screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo; the dialogue is in English, with optional subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The movie's original trailer has been included as a bonus.

George P. Cosmatos directed Sylvester Stallone in the action film Cobra. The movie comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. An English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround, and Spanish and English soundtracks are available in Dolby Digital Mono. There are no subtitles on the disc, but the English 5.1 track is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director, seven different trailers, and production notes. This low-priced DVD will please fans of the film.

Good Dvd, Movie Could Have Been Better
on April 30, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
'Cobra' isn't one of Stallone's best pictures, but it's not his worst either. For all the films faults and inconsistencies, it still manages to conjure up some adrenaline-rushed action scenes that will please fans of the genre. Apparently, the film was considerably violent in its original form and had to be cut down in order to avoid an X rating. Good widescreen dvd here, including a feature length audio commentary by director Cosmatos.
