John Cherry directs Jim Varney in the comedy Ernest Saves Christmas, which comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles, but the soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, making it quite difficult to recommend this Disney/Buena Vista release to anyone who is not an Ernest fan. There is little here for the average DVD consumer.

'Ernest Saves Christmas' was not the best of the seemingly endless series of films starring Jim Varney, but it certainly wasn't the worst either. Again, good entertainment that the kids are likely to enjoy.
The lovable know-it-all Ernest P. Worrell stars in his first adventure with Ernest Goes to Camp. Buena Vista has done a fine job at making sure this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is clear of any major imperfections or defects. The colors are all fairly rich and textured with only the slightest amount of edge enhancement popping up from time to time. Otherwise, this is a decent looking image to a low-budget '80s family comedy. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and is apt, if under-whelming. While the mix lacks any true fidelity or dynamic range, overall the audio track is free of any excessive hiss or distortion. No alternate subtitles or soundtracks are included on this disc. Surely Ernest himself would rant and rave about the lack of extra features on this disc -- not even a theatrical trailer has been included on this DVD edition of Ernest Goes to Camp. Knowhatamean, Vern?

Jim Varney was really funny in my opinion, and I'm sad that he passed on so suddenly, and at a relatively young age. 'Ernest Goes To Camp' is an overall good movie that the kids will most definitely enjoy. Recommended.
John McTiernan's box-office dud The Last Action Hero comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a second English soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and Korean subtitles are accessible, and the English 5.1 track is closed-captioned. There are no special features, but the inexpensive list price, coupled with the superb sound and visual quality, may help this film find the audience that turned it down in theaters.

'Last Action Hero' really marked the beginning of the end for Arnold Schwarzenegger's film career in my opinion, and for whatever it's worth, this dvd reflects that. Full-screen only with no bonus features.
One might imagine that the short, witty "mockumentaries" that result from Christopher Guest's improvisational filmmaking style leave a lot of good footage on the cutting room floor. As the Best in Show DVD demonstrates, that assumption is correct. The DVD includes no less than 17 deleted scenes, some of which originally appeared on the film's promotional website, and many of which could have easily been included in the film without bloating its running time. It's clear that Guest's editing instincts were at their most ruthless when it came to his own scenes as low-key babbler Harlan Pepper, but each of the main characters shows up at least once in this section. A nice touch is that the scenes can all be viewed in succession without returning to the menu after each one. The DVD also includes information on eight cast members and one theatrical trailer. Guest's commentary with co-star and co-writer Eugene Levy is disappointingly sparse, considering their off-screen friendships with many of their castmates and the fact that they have five of the movie's credits between them. There are a few minor sound-related glitches, as actors' voices sometimes shift channels abruptly and for no clear reason. The best reason to own this DVD is the movie itself and the material that never made it to the big screen.

'Best In Show' is an obscure yet impressive comedy that far exceeded my expectations. Presented here on this well put together dvd, featuring an anamorphic widescreen transfer and some good bonus material, including commentary. Recommended.
Henry Silva's somewhat controversial science fiction film Powder comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. An English soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, which is both understandable and disappointing considering some of the concerns raised to the film's studio, Disney.

Although it seems to somewhat stray away from its storyline at times, 'Powder' is still a really good movie with a touching story. Anamorphic widescreen. Recommended!
Ron Howard's humorous newspaper drama The Paper comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English and French soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish subtitles are accessible, and the English 5.1 soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include production notes, and biographies of the cast and crew. This is an inexpensive, but pedestrian release from Universal.

Daniel Petrie replaced Ron Howard in the director's chair for Cocoon: The Return, which reunites much of the original cast. The film makes its debut on DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround, and a Dolby Digital Mono Spanish soundtrack can be accessed as well. English and Spanish subtitles are available. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this disc does offer solid sound and picture quality.

Taking place several years after the first film, 'Cocoon: The Return,' is a very good sequel to an exceptional first film. Overall, critics didn't care for this movie, but I disagree on that note. The entire cast returns for this second film, which is one of its major strong points, and as in the first movie, James Horner's musical score is simply breathtaking. Anamorphic widescreen and full-screen.
One of director Ron Howard's most beloved hits, Cocoon arrives on DVD with some modest but attractive bonus features. Viewable in either the original 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio or 1.33:1 pan-and-scan, this release offers audio rendered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 4.0 and Spanish or French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English and Spanish subtitles. Extra features include a commentary track with director Howard, five featurettes, theatrical trailers, and television spots.

'Cocoon' is an exceptional film that will hit you in the heart. It's presented here beautifully on this disc, and offers a really good bonus commentary by director Ron Howard. Anamorphic Widescreen and full-screen viewing options. Highly recommended, as is the sequel.
The Dream Team has been given a widescreen transfer in its original aspect ratio, which is letterboxed on conventional televisions and enhanced for 16 x 9 playback on widescreen monitors. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Surround Stereo; along with the original English-language soundtrack, an alternate French-language track has also been included. The disc also includes subtitles in Spanish and French, and the film's original theatrical trailer is included as a bonus.

'The Dream Team' is an underrated comedy-drama that really shows off some great acting performances. I can't help but realize how much Michael Keaton's character reminds me of myself sometimes. Widescreen, and well worth a viewing.

'Robin Hood Men In Tights' is a typical Mel Brooks production, though not nearly his best work. However, it's my guess that most of his fans will want to see this one, and probably won't be disappointed. Widescreen with some sparse extras.
