Chuck Norris is back in action as James Braddock in the MGM double feature Missing In Action 2: The Beginning / Braddock: Missing in Action III. Each film is presented in a disappointing 1.33:1 cropped pan and scan version which severely hinders the enjoyment of the films. Sadly, each transfer sports a fair amount of dirt and soft colors while the full frame transfers offer a cheap looking version of each film. MGM has done below-par work on these titles which should make fans feel like decent copies of these films are MIA. Both films are presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and are just slightly better than the transfers. The mixes are lacking on directional effects or dynamic range, though the good news is they both sport clear dialogue, music, and loud sound effects (especially during explosions, when helicopters fly overhead, etc.) Also included for both features are English, French and Spanish subtitles. The only extra features included on this MGM double feature are a single theatrical trailer for each respective movie.

More Cheesy Chuck Norris Movies
on May 16, 2008

It's probably a good thing these two movie come together at a discounted price, because I can't imagine many people who would purchase them as individual titles. Those who enjoyed laughing at Chuck Norris play his tough-guy 'Braddock' character in the first film, will definitely get a kick out of these two.

Martial arts megastar Chuck Norris slips into Rambo mode as a Special Forces colonel on a mission to rescue a group of MIAs being held in Vietnam in this action-packed adventure from MGM. Viewable in either the original 1.85:1 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio or standard 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan, and featuring a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack, this release also offers optional Spanish and French subtitles. The single extra feature is a theatrical trailer.

Cheesy 'Rambo' Rip-Off

'Missing In Action' is the Chuck Norris version of 'Rambo,' except not nearly as good. Widescreen & full-screen.

Directed by Chuck Norris' brother Aaron Norris, Delta Force 2 comes to DVD with a standard full-frame 1.33:1 image. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials are limited to an original theatrical trailer. Norris fans will be happy to have the film, but the lack of a widescreen image makes the picture claustrophobic, detracting from the power of the action sequences. There is nothing compelling about this disc for non-fans.

Wow!

Wow, is this movie bad. I never saw the original 'Delta Force,' and I'm glad I didn't. A friend purchased this dvd for me as a joke, and it's just as bad as I remember it being when I saw it as a kid. Full-screen.

This collector's edition release of American Pie 2 has a pair one major problem. The biggest issue is that the film is presented only in a pan-and-scan transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio. Other than that, there is little to complain about. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, and a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1 as well. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include commentary tracks recorded by members of the cast and crew, making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, outtakes, a music video, and clips from the screen tests for the original American Pie. This film is available in a different edition that contains all these extras as well as an anamorphic widescreen transfer. This disc contains scenes that were cut from the original theatrical release, changing the film's rating from "R" to "unrated."

Aspect Ratio is Incorrect

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 1.85:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture that's different than was seen in theaters.

Steven Soderbergh's highly entertaining remake of Ocean's Eleven comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1 as well. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a pair of enjoyable commentaries (one with the director and screenwriter Ted Griffin, the other with stars Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Andy Garcia), a pair of featurettes, and three different highlights. This disc would be great if not for the pan-and-scan picture which eliminates over 50 percent of the original image. Luckily, the movie, with the same superb features, is available on a different disc that contains a widescreen anamorphic transfer.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery star in the action-crime caper Entrapment. Fox has done a presentable job with this 2.35:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer. Sporting solid colors and even black levels, this transfer is very pleasing to the eye and includes only a small amount of edge enhancement in a few key scenes. The only major flaw in this transfer is the fact that it's not anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and features a nice array of directional effects through both the front and rear speakers. With some excellent use of bass and a few enveloping scenes of action, this is a fairly aggressive track that features no hiss or distortion anywhere in the mix. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English and Spanish, as well as a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack in English. Extra features are kept to the bare minimum on this edition of Entrapment -- the only supplements fans are given include a theatrical trailer for the film and a bonus trailer for Rising Sun.

The history of the Alien series has been a mixed one both in terms of box-office success and critical acclaim, and this is perhaps unwittingly reflected this in Fox's treatment of The Alien Legacy Box Set. The first two films of the series were revolutionary in their own way, each breaking some sort of new ground (Alien is still the film to which all other monster/survival films are compared), whereas the last two were seen as merely run-of-the-mill sci-fi horror films. Consequently, the first two discs of this set are packed with extras, while Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are almost identical in their lack thereof. This disc contains theatrical trailers for all four Alien films, as well as a short making-of featurette, all of which can be accessed by very nicely done, clean, animated menus. The positive side of these similarities is that Resurrection shares Alien 3's technical superiority. This is an absolutely pristine transfer which serves director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's direction well. The visuals have an almost European, arthouse sensibility to them, and to present them poorly would have been an injustice; fortunately, that is not the case. There are three audio tracks: French Dolby surround, English Dolby surround, and a very strong English 5.1 mix which makes good use of all channels to produce a distinctive atmosphere. As with the previous disc, don't expect a lot of extra information with this one, but the quality of the presentation is top-notch.

Worse than 'Alien 3'
on May 16, 2008

To give you an idea of the quality of this film and its storyline, let me just say, it's worse than 'Alien 3.' If that doesn't tell fans of this series what they're getting here, I don't know what will. Widescreen, the few who liked this one may prefer the collector's edition, that has several bonus features not available on this dvd.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Alien Resurrection comes to DVD in this two-disc Collector's Edition from 20th Century Fox. Presented with a widescreen 2.35:1 color transfer. Dolby Digital Surround soundtracks are available in English and Spanish. English and Spanish subtitles are also accessible. Disc one contains the original 1997 theatrical version along with the 2003 Special Edition version. Director Jeunet provides an introduction and an audio commentary track. Disc two contains all the special features, including a teaser trailer for Alien Vs. Predator. The Pre-Production section contains a ton of featurettes about the writing process, character design, casting decisions, and general direction. Includes test footage, ADI effects, conceptual art, storyboards, and multi-angle rehearsals. The Production section contains the featurettes "Death From Below: Underwater Photography," "In the Zone: The Basketball Scene," and "Unnatural Mutation: Creature Design." The Post-Production section explores the music, CGI animation, miniature photography, and reaction to the film's release. Each section contains an extensive photo gallery. A highly recommended disc for fans of the saga.

Like its prequel, the "director's cut" DVD of Aliens is packed full of special features, and is a very high-quality presentation of the film as well. Most notably missing from the disc's special features is a commentary track with director James Cameron, but this is compensated for by an extended onscreen interview conducted just prior to the film's release. Other extras include an extensive still photo/concept art section detailing every aspect of the film, behind-the-scenes footage, theatrical trailers, and best of all, almost 20 minutes of essential, restored footage. Technically, the film has received first-class treatment as well, with a beautiful anamorphic transfer digitally remastered in THX. Aliens won several awards for visual effects, including an Academy Award, and the disc's producers have taken great pains to preserve these visuals in as pristine a manner as possible. There is almost no spotting or pixilation on the transfer, and the colors are well balanced with deep blacks and non-bleeding lights. The soundtrack has been faithfully reproduced and remastered in digital 5.1 THX, which serves the many action scenes well and creates a strong, eerie surround presence. Between the excellent transfer and comprehensive extras package, this disc is the definitive version of Aliens.

Better than the Original
on May 16, 2008

This James Cameron directed sequel to Ridley Scott's 'Alien' far surpasses its predecessor in terms of both storyline and special effects. Although it does have some cheesy material (especially that of the Marine personalities, which seem far from what we would expect of professional soldiers), it still manages to conjure up enough on-screen magic to make it worthwhile. Nice widescreen special edition, loaded with bonus material.
