Impressive Dvd for This Cheesy 'Jaws' Ripoff
on May 3, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
'Grizzly' is the equivalent of Spielberg's 'Jaws,' only instead of a giant great white shark attacking people left and right in the water, it's a giant grizzly bear attacking people left and right on land. The dvd is quite impressive considering the movie is not that great, and features an anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 transfer and several bonus materials.

Episode I of the Star Wars films comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie. An English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, while Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital 2.0. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by George Lucas and many of the people who worked behind the camera on the film, deleted scenes, storyboards, numerous featurettes, a music video, trailers, and a 12-part documentary that was produced for the Internet. This is a great disc for what it is, but the same extras are available on another edition that also has a widescreen image. That version is superior to this one.

Picture Format is Inaccurate
on May 3, 2008

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture in which you lose almost 50% of the image on each side.

Excellent Christmas Movie & Bonus!
on May 3, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
Of all the film adaptations of Charles Dickens' 'Christmas Carol,' It is my opinion that the 1951 British version starring Alastair Sim is the best. However, this 1938 rendition starring Reginald Owen, would be my second favorite. And it looks just breathtaking here on this re-mastered dvd that is well worth the buy. Even better, is that the animated short 'Peace On Earth,' which was nominated for an oscar, is included here, and it amazes me how relevant its subject matter still is today. Highly Recommended!

Mick "Crocodile" Dundee returns for a second time to America, this time heading to the city of fame and fortune in Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. Paramount has done a fine job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The colors and black levels in this picture all look very even and well-rendered. While there is a slight amount of edge enhancement present during a few key scenes, overall this is a very clean and well-done transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds excellent, if a bit underwhelming. Rear and front speakers were utilized mostly during the beginning Australia sequences, as well as when the music score kicks in during the film. Also included on this disc is a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack in English, as well as English subtitles. Much like the first two films, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles sports very few extra features. Included on this disc is an anamorphic theatrical trailer as well as a brief featurette on the making of the film which includes interviews with the cast and crew. Fans of this series will most likely want to take a bite out of this disc, though they will be shedding crocodile tears due to the lack of extra materials.

Almost Looks Like It Was Made For TV
on May 3, 2008

Being a fan of the first two films, I was hopeful that this third installment might be enjoyable as well. I was wrong, and the cameo of professional boxer Mike Tyson in the film pretty much sums up the quality of this movie. In many parts, the film looks as though it was almost a made for television production. Widescreen with some sparse extras.

The second time's the charm when Aussie actor Paul Hogan returns in this hit sequel Crocodile Dundee II. Paramount has put forth well-placed effort into making this transfer look decent, if a bit dated. While there are some instances of imperfections during the film (including grain and dirt), overall the picture quality is very good with colors bright and black levels looking solid. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds much better than the first film's DVD soundtrack. Certainly the directional effects are not huge or lavish, but they do provide a nice range for the listener. All aspects of the soundtrack are clear and concise without any heavy distortion. Also included on this track is a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track in English and French, as well as English captions. Oddly enough, Crocodile Dundee II includes more extra features than its predecessor. Sporting an anamorphic widescreen theatrical trailer, Crocodile Dundee II also includes a "behind-the-scenes" featurette that is about six minutes long. Though the featurette is nothing spectacular, it's well worth having on this disc, which is a passable edition in the Crocodile Dundee series.

Better Than the First Film!
on May 3, 2008

'Crocodile Dundee II' is one of very few sequels that's actually better than its predecessor. Beautiful locations, good action, and great dialogue make this one worth owning, especially for fans. Anamorphic widescreen, recommended!

Allan Arkush's sequel to Caddyshack comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence. This is an unimpressive disc from Warner Bros. that is at least priced reasonably considering there is not much on it.

Not Bad, But Not As Good As the First
on May 3, 2008

I really don't understand all the bad talk I hear about 'Caddyshack 2.' True, it's not as good as the first movie, but it still has some really funny moments that I feel make it worth a watch. This dvd is lackluster, but will do the trick for people who enjoy it.

One of the best golf films ever made, Caddyshack is a movie high on the list of any comedy fan. As a DVD, however, it doesn't deliver the same punch. The widescreen transfer is from an older print, and the audio options are Dolby digital or just plain mono. Unfortunately the extras aren't much better than the transfer. There's no audio commentary, which could have been a classic on a film like this. There is a 30-minute behind-the-scenes feature entitled "The 19th Hole" which includes interviews with director Harold Ramis and star Chevy Chase plus a few outtakes and rare deleted scenes. Somehow the comedy of the film doesn't translate to this documentary, and the noticeable absence of Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray make one think its producers didn't delve as deeply as they should have. Other extras are strictly by the numbers, including theatrical trailer, production notes and French language and subtitles.

The first two-disc set from Paramount, Forrest Gump is a sight to see, and sure to please anyone who understood the real meaning of the film. To begin, the picture quality is about as good as it gets. Framed at the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and anamorphic, the colors are right on (skin tones are especially on target) and the definition is outstanding. Darker areas stand out with the correct shading that goes to show what can be done with careful authoring. The sound, a 5.1 Dolby Digital English track, is also perfectly realized. Though there is only a slim amount of surround material, the track is very forward and forceful, taking advantage, just at the right time, of the deeper bass. Also available is a French surround track and subtitles in English. As for extras, there is no mistaking that this Academy Award-winning film gets the star treatment. The first of the two discs, along with the movie, has two audio commentary tracks. The first is from director Robert Zemeckis, producer Steve Starkey, and production designer Rick Carter. The second commentary is from another of the producers, Wendy Finerman. Neither is screen-specific, but both are, in different ways, filled with a wealth of valuable information. But it is the second disc that houses the majority of the supplemental materials. There you will find a half-hour documentary (originally released on VHS in 1994) called "Through the Eyes of Forrest Gump." There are enough interviews and behind-the-scenes shots to make this better than the standard fluff piece. Next are some shorter featurettes, "The Magic of Makeup," "Through the Ears of Forrest Gump" (made up of five short segments), and "Building the World Of Forrest Gump -- Production Design." Eleven visual effects discussions, including two scenes that were excised from the film, are the highlight of the extras. Visual effects producer Ken Ralston and his team talk in depth about the multitude of effects shots used in the film. Finally, this disc features a decent photo gallery, some wonderful (though short) screen tests, and a couple of trailers. This is a wonderful DVD set for a memorable movie, certainly worthy of any collection.

Heartwarming Story, Beautiful Musical Score
on May 3, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
Personally, my favorite part of 'Forrest Gump' is the musical score by Alan Silvestri. Outside of that, this is still a very good film, with a touching story. Great 2-disc collector's edition dvd here for those who loved this movie. Recommended.

Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan star in this remake of director Wim Wenders' landmark film Wings of Desire (1987), arriving in an extra feature-intensive DVD release courtesy of Warner Home Video. Warner is well known for its DVD-friendly releases, and City of Angels is certainly no exception; loaded with an extensive list of exciting and informative extra features in addition to a beautiful transfer of the film itself, Warner has once again proven its diligent dedication to the format with this must-have disc for fans of the film and film fanatics alike. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1, English Dolby Digital Mono, or French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English or French subtitles, this disc's extra features start where most recent DVD releases stop. Featuring two documentaries (one a "making of," the other "Inside Special Effects"), two feature-length audio commentary tracks (featuring director Brad Silberling and producer Charles Roven), deleted scenes with commentary, cinematography commentary, production design commentary, interviews with Alanis Morissette and Peter Gabriel, an isolated music-only track, music videos from the Goo Goo Dolls and U2, five theatrical trailers, production notes, and the standard interactive menus and scene access this disc is certain to make a film geek out of even the most casual viewer.

It Had Potential
on May 3, 2008

Considering the material the movie had to work with, and the cast involved, it's a shame that 'City of Angels' didn't live up to the hype it generated. Instead of a heartwarming and enjoyable movie, we get a picture that is just strange. This loaded dvd is recommended only to those who liked this movie, and I can't imagine there are many.

Miracle tells the story o the gold medal-winning 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, who were led by the flinty coach Herb Brooks -- portrayed in a good performance by Kurt Russell in the film. The movie is presented in a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. This two-disc set is loaded with supplemental materials including a commentary track recorded by director Gavin O'Connor, editor John Gilroy, and cinematographer Daniel Stoloff. They discuss many aspects of the production including the director's decision to cast the team with people who could actually play hockey. A making of featurette, a look at how Kurt Russell met and absorbed the nuances of Herb Brooks (who passed away shortly before the film opened in theaters), a featurette on the sound design of the film, and outtakes round out this release. While fine for what it is, the film is available on a different disc that offers the same extras with a widescreen transfer of the film that is preferable to this edition.

Picture is Cropped and Theatrically Inaccurate

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture that is much different from what was seen in its original theatrical exhibition. Buy the widescreen version instead.
