The action comedy Burglar comes to DVD from Warner Home Video with a full frame 1.33:1 transfer. The audio is available in Dolby Digital Surround Sound in English and Dolby Digital 1.0 in French. This is a perfectly reasonable DVD release for this film.

Can't Believe This One Got A Dvd Release
on May 15, 2008

'Burglar' stars Whoopi Goldberg, and is a very weak film in general. For those who like it, it's full-screen only, which is actually more than I expected for this one.

The science-fiction film Species gets a new release to DVD with this disc that boasts a newly transferred widescreen image. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. A French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1, and a Spanish soundtrack is available in Stereo Surround. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages. Supplemental materials include a pair of commentary tracks. One track features director Roger Donaldson and three members of his crew. The second track finds Donaldson along with co-stars Natasha Henstridge and Michael Madsen discussing the making of the film. The original theatrical trailer and a look at Species III round out this solid release.

Henstridge Is Beautiful
on May 15, 2008

Natasha Henstridge's beauty is pretty much the only quality this B-grade sci-fi flick possesses. Fans will be happy to know that this dvd has several bonus features that weren't available on the previous bare-bones dvd release, but not as many as the more recent 2-disc edition.

Roger Donaldson's silly sci-fi thriller Species comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen image preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and is preferable to the standard full-frame transfer. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are available in all three of these languages as well. Supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer. This disc offers a solid rendition of the film and has an inexpensive list price, making it of interest to genre enthusiasts.

The Oscar-winning action adventure Gladiator comes to DVD from DreamWorks in this single disc edition. Presented with a widescreen anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound in English. Subtitles and closed captions are available in English. Extra features include audio commentary with director Ridley Scott, deleted scenes, storyboards, production notes, and biographies for the cast and crew. This is the scaled-down release of the film; those interested in bonus material are advised to check out the Special Edition two-disc set released by DreamWorks in 2000.

I Was So Excited For This One
on May 15, 2008

'Gladiator' would rank as one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen, not because it was an awful picture, but because I just expected so much more. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film is much too inconsistent, runs longer than it needs to, and disappoints in the battle sequences. Widescreen.

Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall gets the deluxe treatment from Artisan on this release. The disc offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Verhoeven and star Arnold Schwarzenegger, a pair of featurettes, a photo gallery, trailers, television promotional spots, and storyboards. This is a superb disc from Artisan.

This could very well be the most unexpected special edition of 2005. 20th Century Fox has truly pulled out all the stops here to make this special edition an ideal companion piece with their recent special edition of the 1986 version of The Fly. The first disc includes a handsome transfer of The Fly 2; it boasts a new high-definition, anamorphic widescreen transfer that captures the film's shadowy look to nice effect and an effective set of Dolby 5.1 and DTS stereo options. Also on the first disc is a commentary track with director Chris Walas and genre expert Bob Burns; it's fairly lightweight but does offer some good behind-the-scenes story and a winning sense of enthusiasm for the film. Rounding out the first disc is a pair of deleted scenes that were cut after previews. Seeing them will leave no doubt as to why they were cut, but they're interesting to see nonetheless. Extra-wise, things get even better on the second disc. First up, is a pair of documentaries: "Transformations" offers a thorough overview of The Fly 2's genesis and "The Fly Papers" is an excellent documentary that covers the history of all five Fly films produced by 20th Century Fox. Other featurettes on the disc include the original EPK for The Fly 2, a comprehensive series of the behind-the-scenes clips that illustrate the creation of the film's various special effects, and an enlightening chat with composer Christopher Young that covers his approach to scoring The Fly 2. Fans will also be pleased with a series of three storyboard-to-film comparisons that feature commentary with Walas. Rounding out the disc is a trailer collection plus elaborate galleries of promotional materials, conceptual art, and stills. In short, this is a better package of material than even the film's fans could have expected, and 20th Century Fox deserves praise for going the extra mile.

Nice Collector's Edition Considering
on May 15, 2008

Considering what a stomach turning film this is, fans should be happy to get it in such a fancy widescreen special edition set. Worse, and in some aspects even more gross, than the original.

After spending years consigned to one half of a double-feature disc, David Cronenberg's brilliantly personalized take on The Fly has received a special edition worthy of its merits. Starting off the package is a slick new transfer; the video offers a slight but noticeable improvement on the past edition, with a richer sense of color and detail as well as mastering for high-definition. The audio portion of the disc offers effective 5.1 Dolby and DTS mixes guaranteed to give the viewer's stereo system a workout. The first disc also features an excellent commentary track from Cronenberg that covers everything from technical and aesthetic details to on-the-set memories in the director's wry, understated style. The second disc is where the real treats begin for the film's longtime fans. First up is a new epic-length documentary on the making of The Fly that covers everything one could ever want to know about the film (with the selection of optional scene extensions, it can go all the way up to two hours and 45 minutes). This might be too much of a good thing for some viewers but the producers' willingness to leave no stone unturned is truly impressive. There's also a gallery of deleted scenes that have been painstakingly reconstructed and given new sound mixes for this disc -- fans of the film will flip over the often discussed but rarely seen "Monkey Cat" sequence. The viewer's behind-the-scenes knowledge is further extended with a series of film tests, including an amusing bit where Cronenberg camps it up in a fly costume on the film's revolving set. Elsewhere, the second disc features an elaborate series of still galleries that cover everything from the expected stills and conceptual art to reproductions of script drafts and the George Langelaan short story that inspired all the Fly films. Rounding out the disc is a generous trailer collection that includes all the theatrical and television trailers for the 1986 version of The Fly as well as trailers from The Fly 2, the 1958 version of The Fly, and The Return of the Fly. In short, this is a stellar DVD package, and fans of horror and sci-fi classics will be thrilled with its thorough excellence.

Strange & Gross
on May 15, 2008

This strange and gross remake of the 1958 original isn't anything to get excited about. Some decent material, but the film just focuses a bit too much on the 'disgusting' in my opinion. Stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Widescreen.

Luis Llosa's action film The Specialist comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages. Supplemental materials include trailers and production notes. This is a solid disc from Warner Bros. that is appealing at its inexpensive list price. Fans of Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone will not be let down.

Stallone & Stone

The only nice thing I can say about 'the Specialist' is that the two lead cast members' names sound good together (Stallone & Stone). Everything else about the movie is less than satisfactory. Full-screen.
