The complete collection on 9 dvds
on October 5, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
This is a great collection for one of the greatest movie franchises. This set of 9 dvds contains the theatrical and special editions for all 4 films with a bonus disc for each and a 9th bonus disc for the entire set. This is deffinitely a set worth having if you are a fan. The first Alien movie is a classic horror-science fiction film. Aliens is one of those rare sequels that surpases the original (in my opinion). Alien 3 tends to get some hate from people, but I don't think it's that bad. It is a big step down from the previous 2, but Alien and Aliens are tough acts to follow. Resurrection also gets some hate, but it's still a great entry into the series. Fortunately this set was made before the aweful Alien vs Predator so there is no way that garbage could be included here.
What's great about it: 9 discs loaded with stuff
What's not so great: What coukd be wrong with 9 discs of Alien?

Their best live period
on October 3, 2008

Of the 3 Kissology sets, this one is the best. It starts of with Attack of the Phantoms, which is quite possibly the worst movie ever made, but it's worth it for a laugh. Then we move on to the departure of Perer Criss and the arival of Eric Carr, a far superior drummer. The shows featuring Eric while Ace was still in the band are the best. Eric really spices up all of the old Kiss songs. But unfortunately, Ace Frehely quit the band and a variety of lead guitarists would soon come and go. This set also features Kiss without makeup. Sadly, it ends with the death of Eric Carr.
What's great about it: Eric Carr joins the band
What's not so great: Ace Frehely leaves the band

Great show
on October 2, 2008

This is a great dvd documenting the last concert Nightwish performed with Tarka on vocals. The set list is great and the performace is right on. I'm not upset that Tarja is no longer in the band since I actually pferer their new singer, Anette Olzon. This particular edition of the dvd also includes the audio on 2 cds so you can take it with you on the go.
What's great about it: Awesome performance and tight set list
What's not so great: Since it's in Finland, all of the talking between songs is in Finnish

Just when there's no more room in you're DVD collection, Anchor Bay Entertainment will release yet another version of George A. Romero's zombie classic Dawn of the Dead. Filtering into stores just in time to cash in on the much-ballyhooed, big-budget remake, this release seems little more than a precursor to Anchor Bay's heavily touted three-disc Special Edition -- set for release in the fall of 2004. Mastered in the high-definition Divimax process and letterboxed at the correct theatrical exhibition aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (previous releases were often matted and released in 1.66:1), the image as presented on this release is the best that Dawn of the Dead has ever looked on home video. In addition to the corrected aspect ratio, the remarkably clean image sports solid, vibrant colors, even skin tones (for the living), and no evidence of edge-enhancement. As for audio, Anchor Bay has seen fit to include a multitude of choices that should please both purists and those looking to push the limits of their home theater systems. In addition to an effective mix in the original Mono, mixes in DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Digital Surround expand the terror by surrounding viewers with the blood-chilling moans of the undead. Of course, the audio feature that most viewers will jump for is the commentary track, featuring director Romero, makeup effects artist Tom Savini, and assistant director Chris Romero -- and moderated by Perry Martin. It's great to hear Romero comment on the origins of the story and the events that set the sequel into motion, and the enthusiasm of Savini when Romero told him to start thinking of various inventive ways to kill people is palpable. With virtually no dead air, the commentary is both entertaining and informative. Outside of the commentary track, the extras are fairly standard -- a seeming warm-up for the massive Special Edition that lies ahead. A pair of theatrical trailers are in top condition, as are a trio of television spots -- and with no less than nine radio spots, fans will no doubt get the gist of the advertising campaign that ushered audiences into theaters. A poster and advertising gallery offers various posters, newspaper clippings, and black-and-white stills for the film, and a deeply informative biography explores Romero's motivations as a filmmaker while scrutinizing his macabre body of work. Rounding things out is a somewhat disappointing preview of the upcoming comic-book adaptation. Overall, you have a pretty tantalizing release that would be a great addition to the old DVD collection -- until that massive Special Edition blows this one out of the water, that is.

The greatest zombie movie

This movie is incredible. I wish I bought the 4 disc delux edition but I did a blind buy and didn't want to risk the extra money. Maybe I'll upgrade some day.
What's great about it: It's awesome
What's not so great: This particular dvd has minimal bonus features

It's a good one

I really enjoy the music of The Misfits. The horror themed lyrics and punk music apeal to me. Glenn Danzig is a very good singer and the back up vocals and harmonies are very well done. Sometimes the music seems a bit cheerful but the lyrics are the complete opposite of cheerful. My only complaint is that even with 13 tracks the album is still less han half an hour.
What's great about it: Good music
What's not so great: Too short

After years of waiting for a video release of any kind, the fans of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls have had their prayers answered with this fantastic double-disc set from Fox. The first disc presents a pristine letterboxed, anamorphically enhanced transfer of the film that offers eye-popping colors and razor-sharp detail. The audio is equally sharp, offering Dolby 2.0 stereo and mono mixes of the film; the stereo track has the edge, but the reams of campy dialogue and killer psych-pop tunes come through loud and clear on either track. The first disc also offers a pair of commentary tracks, one from co-writer Roger Ebert and the other featuring a collection of cast members. Ebert's track offers an all-around combination of historical detail, behind-the-scenes material, and critical perspective on the film, while the cast commentary offers plenty of dishy stories about the making of the film. The second disc offers just over an hour's worth of featurettes that discuss the making of the film, its context within the era, the film's catchy pop music score, its enduring cult following, and the somewhat controversial lesbian angle to its storyline. All of the segments are well-produced, offering plenty of interviews with cast and crew as well as authorities like Russ Meyer biographer Jimmy McDonough and various film critics. These featurettes also make imaginative use of computer graphics to bring the tales of the participants to life. Elsewhere on disc two, viewers can find "Z-Man's Far Out Party Favors" (a collection of trailers and screen tests) and a comprehensive series of image galleries that include stills, ad materials, and countless on-the-set photos. In short, this is the dream package that all Beyond the Valley of the Dolls fans have been waiting for and a must for anyone with a serious interest in classic cult cinema.

One of the most awesomely rediculous films ever
on September 29, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
This is quite possibly the greatest so bad that it's good film ever. The fact that this absurd bit of film was written by Roger Ebert only makes it that much better (and Ebert that much harder to take seriously)
What's great about it: Over the top rediculous
What's not so great: Some poor acting, but it only adds to the rediculousness

It may have been taken off the airwaves tragically early, but thanks to Shout Factory's feature-packed release of Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series, fans can now own a comprehensive collection of the entire run of this criminally unseen series. Sporting some of the best writing on television and offering one of the most realistic portrayals of high-school life ever to hit the small screen, Freaks and Geeks' endearing blend of comedy and character-driven drama earned it a special place in the hearts of viewers -- and it may well have flourished on the small screen had the networks give it a chance to find its footing in the vast television wasteland. Presented in 1.33:1 full-frame, the image is clean and the colors evenly balanced. Sound is presented in closed-captioned Dolby Digital 5.1, and though there is little room for directional effects in such a dialogue-driven show, the audio is clean, solid, and free of hiss or distortion. If fans still feel somewhat jilted regarding Freaks and Geeks' all-too-brief television run, the inclusion of an abundance of bonus features will no doubt offer a glimmer of vindication. To put it bluntly, this set is packed -- virtually overflowing with an abundance of informative and entertaining extras. Commentaries feature nearly everyone involved in the production of the series (including "in character" commentaries by the actors who portrayed teachers) and are nearly as entertaining as the shows themselves. Though they may not offer much in the way of technical information, they are certainly a testament to the wealth of creativity involved in the show. Outtakes and deleted scenes range from the incidental to touching little character moments, and are also frequently accompanied by commentary. Casting auditions offer fans an amusing look at the actors as they get in touch with their inner misfits. An informative booklet rounds things off nicely with a detailed essay by series creator Paul Feig and a revealing Q & A session with writer/producer Judd Apatow -- naturally accompanied by numerous unflattering photos.

A great, but short lived show
on September 24, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
Freaks and Geeks is possibly the most acurate portrayal of high school life. Granted, I wasn't in high school in the 1980's, it doesn't seem like very much has changed. This show is hilarious but has heart. It can make you laugh non-stop and then bring you to tears a moment later. This collection includes the entire series and a nice bunch of behind the scenes features as well as cast and crew comentary on every episode. It's great to see that Apatow and most of the cast here has gone on to great fame recently, but if only they were bigger back then this show may have lasted. Check out Undeclared if you enjoy this, it's a silimar show but set in college and starring some familiar faces.
What's great about it: Hilarious
What's not so great: It was cancelled...

This band was meant to play a show like this
on September 23, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
Within Temptation has always played with an orchestra on their albums, but now they have finally brought an orchestra on stage... with great results. The set list here is pretty good as well. The performaces are strong and the show just plain rocks. The only problem I have is that the audio cd shortens the show onto one disc. The dvd has the full show, but I'd like to be able to take the audio only with me for the car and all I get is the abridged show. Oh well, the show still rocks.
What's great about it: A full orchestra playing along with the band
What's not so great: The audio cd is shortened

A sequel far better than the first
on September 22, 2008

This is probably my favorite horror movie. It has a perfect blend of edge of your seat horror and 3 Stooges-esque slapstick humor. In fact, the dark humor of this movie tends to add to the horror because it is just so bizzare. When every object in the cabin starts laughing at Ash is a perfect example of how the humor and creepiness work hand in hand in this film. Bruce Campbell is at his best here as well.
For the dvd, there is a neat making of feature and audio commentary from Bruce and director Sam Raimi. This is deffinitely a must have for any horror fan.
What's great about it: It's scary and funny at the same time
What's not so great: Besides Bruce, there is some bad acting

What a live cd should be
on September 21, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
This is what a real live album should be. The performance here is outstanding and the set list is as solid as can be. This is truly one of the finest live albums available, up there with Iron Maiden's Live After Death and Kiss Alive! (However live that record actually is)
What's great about it: Great set list and awesome performance
What's not so great: Nothing wrong here
