Great Show
on November 1, 2008

A spin off that's just about as good as the original doesn't come around very often but this is one of thosed cases. Angle first apeared on Buffy the Vampire Slayer but left Sunnyville for L.A. after season 3 of Buffy to begin his own adventure. Now Angel helps the helpless by battling demons and saving the day.
What's great about it: A lot

Early Iced Earth gets an upgrade.
on October 25, 2008

Jon Schafer is a perfectionist and this compilation is proof. This cd contains newly recorded and remixed versions of songs from the first 3 Iced Earth cds. The good thing about this is that now Matt barlow can be heard singing songs from the first 2 cds since he was not in the band at that time and is a much better vocalist than the previous 2. But this cd also contains newly done versions of songs from the Burnt Offerings cd, which Barlow did sing on. The newly done Burnt Offering tracks are a bit better here, but was is really necessary? Overall, I'd say this is a good place for a new fan to start since it has their best vocalist singing all of the songs that made Iced Earth what they are.
What's great about it: Barlow sings the old tunes
What's not so great: Is it really that necessary?

Better than it's reputation

X Factor and Vurtual XI get a lot of hate from people since they don't have Bruce Dickinson. Well, X Factor is, in my opinion, better than the previous 2 albums Maiden had put out at the time and those 2 albums had Dickinson. Blaze really doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Sure, he's not as good as Bruce (or even Paul Di'Anno), but who is? Those are some mightly big shoes to fill, and I'd say Blaze does his best and really worked well with the band. Part of the blame could also go to the rest of the band since the songwriting had taken a slightly downward turn since Seventh Son. X Factor has some very good Maiden tunes icluding the epic "Sign of the Cross," and one of my all time favorites "Lord of the Flies."
What's great about it: Some good songs
What's not so great: No Bruce

16 Tons of Awesome
on October 19, 2008

Monty Python's Flying Circus is the funniest thing to ever be put onto film and now it's all available on 14 discs with 2 more discs of Python excellence. Every single sketch is here from "Nudge Nudge" to "Cheese Shop" and everything else you ever wanted. The only problem is that some of the sketches had to be censored back when the were first aired and this dvd set contains those edited versions. But no worries since it was only a few sketches and it doesn't detract from the hilarity.
What's great about it: The entire series on 16 discs plus more
What's not so great: Has the edited versions

Wraps up a good sags

Iced Earth rocks. My ears are still ringing from last night's concert. This new cd, The Crucible of Man is part 2 of the Something Wicked Saga. I must say that I thought part 1 was excellent and vocalist Tim Owens was fantastic on it. But Owens is gone and the true voice of Iced Earth, Matt Barlow is back. Part 2 here is pretty good, but not quite as good as 1. Barlow's vocals are excellent but There aren't many really stand out songs. The album works best as a whole along with Framing Armageddon, which is what it is supposed to do anyway.
What's great about it: Barlow is back
What's not so great: It's not their best

Rainbow's Best
on October 12, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
Rainbow's second album is also their greatest... granted only the first three are worth listening to at all. The first was good, but the musicians behind Blackmore and Dio weren't quite up to par. With Rising, Blackmore recruited drumming master Cozy Powell and bassist Jimmy Bain to record their finest album. "Stargazer" is quite possibly the greatest song Dio has ever performed on and has one of the greatest drum intro's ever recorded. It's too bad that Dio would leave the band after their next album because Blacmore wanted to become more commercial (a bit ironic since he left Deep Purple for the same reason Dio left Rainbow). After Long Live Rock n Roll (another fine album) Rainbow became a rather lame band while Dio would go on to join Black Sabbath and eventually form his own band with fellow Rainbow bandmate Jimmy Bain.
What's great about it: Excellent music
What's not so great: Too short

The Beatles Anthology project (ultimately comprising audio, video, and book aspects) initially reached the public during the week of Thanksgiving 1995, with the first of three two-hour television specials broadcast Sunday, November 19, followed by the first of three two-CD sets of outtakes of the group's recordings released Tuesday, November 21. The TV portion continued on Wednesday and concluded on Thanksgiving. The second CD set was released in March 1996, with the third coming in October, while in September the VHS version of this video set was released. (A coffee-table book was published in 2000.) It expanded enormously on the original TV broadcast, which ran six hours including commercials. The home-video version had eight episodes, each running between 71 and 81 minutes, for a total length just short of ten hours, which just about doubled the running time. (The 2003 DVD reissue contains five discs, with two episodes per disc, plus an 81-minute bonus disc containing extra material.) At the longer length, the story is the same, a roughly chronological history of the Beatles from their beginnings in Liverpool, England, to worldwide fame and their breakup at the end of the 1960s. Except for brief newsreel-like recitations, there is no overall narrative, just interviews with the three Beatles then still alive (John Lennon's comments are culled from his numerous press interviews over the years), along with three key associates: Neil Aspinall (who began as their roadie and went on to run their company, Apple); Derek Taylor (their press representative); and George Martin (their record producer). As a video autobiography, the film shares the advantages and disadvantages of autobiographies, in general. On the plus side, there is lots of rare footage of the Beatles performing and, of course, their music is used extensively. On the minus side, there are occasional factual errors; there is little historical perspective (for example, there is no discussion at all of the development of the Beatle haircut and its effect on their career and on men's grooming, though this matter is addressed briefly in one of the segments on the bonus DVD); and, in telling their own story from their own perspective, the Beatles largely ignore other perspectives. They do not, for instance, ask dismissed drummer Pete Best for his side of the story. Lennon's remarks are characteristically incisive, while Paul McCartney comes off as a charming self-promoter, Ringo Starr is relentlessly sunny for the most part, and George Harrison can be smug and sarcastic. The group's history was well-documented on film, and much of that film has been obtained and used, so the viewer gets a good look at what happened. With ten hours to fill, the story unfolds gradually, with frequent stops for full-length musical segments, excerpts from radio shows, and studio chatter. This is not really the place to start in learning the Beatles' story; frequently, the interviewees provide details on a story they assume viewers already know the gist of, rather than explaining the basic facts. But it is, of course, a treasure trove for Beatles fans, providing large amounts of rare and previously unseen audio and video material on the group. The bonus DVD adds to this particularly by providing extra footage of Harrison, McCartney, and Starr together in 1994-1995, reminiscing and playing some impromptu tunes.

A must have for Beatles fans

The best possible documentary on The Beatles. It covers their earliest days before they were even The Beatles and goes anll the way to the end. 8 hours of Beatles interviews and concerts make this the greatest music documentary i have ever seen. Well worth buying.
What's great about it: Covers the entire span of the Beatles
What's not so great: Nothing

Best Oasis album in 10 years
on October 8, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
This is the best Oasis album since Be Here Now back in 1997. Dig Out Your Soul is a bit grittier than their previous efforts and it really rocks. from the first track "Bag It Up" through track 4 "The Shock of the Lightning," is some of the hardest rocking the band has ever done. Zak Starkey's drumming on "The Shock of the Lightning" is great. After that they give the listener a much needed change of pace with ""I'm Out of Time," which is one of the best ballads the band has written since "Wonderwall". This version also includes a dvd with a documentary about the making of the album and the music video to "The Shock of the Lightning." It's really worth the few extra dollars.
What's great about it: Great tunes
What's not so great: A few songs near the end are a bit forgettable

The best KISS solo album
on October 8, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
When all 4 members of KISS decided to release solo albums at the same time, only one of those albums was really worth listening to and that was Ace Frehley's. Ace had only made his vocal debut on the previous KISS album, Love Gun, with his song "Shock Me" and then he had the chance to really shine on his own solo album. while the other members experimented with some other forms of music from jazz to Disney tunes, Ace stayed true to rock 'n' roll and recorded an album that rivals even the greatest of KISS albums. "Rip It Up," "Snowblind," and "I'm in need of Love" are great songs as well as his cover of "New York Groove". This is deffinitely worth geting of you're a a fan of KISS and the Space Ace himself.
What's great about it: Ace rocks
What's not so great: Just a few not bad but not great songs

A great live band
on October 7, 2008
Posted by: Wrathchild666
I've never been to a Pearl Jam concert (yet...) but this set makes me feel like I have. They are one the greatest live acts of the past decade. This is 7 discs containing 3 entire shows from the band. They change the set from night to night so it's not the same exact thing on each concert, but they do always tend to play the hits, as to be expected. The first show (discs 1-3) is the best. Eddie gets the crowd chanting to Tom Petty, who happened to be in his hotel room nearby preparing for his show the next night) and really knows how to connect with a crowd. These guys also know how to chose some choice cover tunes. "I Won't Back Down," "BaBa O'Riley," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Little Wing" all get the Pearl Jam twist and with great results, especially "BaBa O'Riley" where they play guitar instead of synthesiser.
What's great about it: Great performances
What's not so great: Some repeated songs, but it's to be expected with 3 complete shows
