Wore it out!
on September 19, 2008

All the greatest hits you associate with the 70's-80's group, Journey. Features the original lead singer, Steve Perry who is not in the reformed group.
Wore this disk out, and had to buy a second copy. Soaring vocals, energized brilliant lead guitar riffs, lovely lyrics-a must for a long highway journey, working out, or just plain kicking back!
What's great about it: All the hits with the original lead singer, Steve Perry
What's not so great: Second disk isn't as good as the first

Actor/director Kevin Costner's acclaimed epic tale of a Union Army soldier caught between two worlds on path for a tragic collision course makes a return appearance on DVD courtesy of this MGM/UA release. The film is presented in 1.33:1 pan-and-scan and offers audio rendered in either English Dolby Digital 5.1 or alternate French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles. The sole extra feature on this otherwise bare-bones release is an original theatrical trailer.

Innovative-Do you speak Lakota?

Amazing scenery, engaging story, attempt to use authentic locations, real native american actors, innovative use of subtitles in English while actors spoke Lakota. Hits straight to the heart of our historic treatment of native americans and the cultural gap between pioneers and native peoples. Costner was a better director and filmmaker than actor in this film, however! Won best picture!
What's great about it: Real attempt to use native american actors with empathy
What's not so great: Dragged in places

This high-definition monitor supports 720p content on a brilliant 1680 x 1050 resolution widescreen display. The DVI-D input makes it easy to connect digital video components.

Fabulous response time, dazzling color, reasonably priced, light in weight, doesn't take up much room. Wonderful for gaming. Have it paired with A Velocity computer for World of Warcraft/Spore play. Love this monitor!
What's great about it: Light weight in size, but heavy duty in performance
What's not so great: Can't find any!

Mike Nichols' The Graduate (1967) reappeared on DVD in 2007 in a 40th Anniversary Edition, complete with two separate commentary tracks, one by Dustin Hoffman and Katherine Ross and the other by Nichols with Stephen Soderberg, plus a quartet of featurettes covering (and from) various points in its history, and the original theatrical trailer, and a bonus CD containing the four Simon And Garfunkel songs that are highlighted on the soundtrack. The CD is a dispensable trifle, utilizing the latest digital masters of the commercial versions of the music but otherwise not notable. Of the featurettes, "Students of the Graduate" is new, and mostly features peoples' impressions of the movie from a professional standpoint, in the movie business, coupled with some recollections by participants such as Buck Henry -- "The Seduction" delves into the relationship between Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman, and her relationship with the world, and an analysis of the seduction scene. The other two featurettes are repeated from the earlier 25th anniversary edition of the movie. The commentaries are both fascinating, and take different directions, Nichols -- prompted by Soderberg -- delving larger questions about the movie and his approach to it, more than on particulars of certain scenes. Hoffman and Ross, by contrast, dwell a bit more on particular scenes and shots, and anecdotal references. The movie is presented in its proper letterboxed anamorphic aspect ratio (2.35-to-1), and is given 24 chapters. The disc opens automatically to a multi-layered menu.

Favorite Movie of all Time

This movie has it all-superb acting by Bancroft and Hoffman. Amazing direction by Mike Nichols, sublime soundtrack of Simon and Garfunkel Music. Makes you feel young again, yet oh-so-worldly wise and jaded at the same time. Sadness and euphoria mix when one contemplates 'Mrs. Robinson' and her neuroses with the discovery of obsessive young love amidst the hypocrisy of upper middle class society. A must have for any collectors library!
What's great about it: Iconic Coming of Age Movie-launched Dustin Hoffman
What's not so great: A bit dated if you aren't familiar with the early sixties

For a Winter's Day Reverie

still one of my favorite albums of all time! So many classics, including fire and rain, Sweet Baby James. And the great thing, once you have this as the mainstay of your James Taylor collection,is that you can build on it. The songs are timeless, and the man continues to make new music, break new ground, without losing the ability to make us dive into the well of our souls in a gentle way.
You'll wear this out on a winter afternoon with a cup of tea and a your mind will wander down familiar roads...
What's great about it: Poetic lyrics, lovely lilting music
What's not so great: Not long enough

Humor at it's best
on September 14, 2008

Phenomenal humor if you are tired of the 'f' word being the mainstay of every comic's act. Cerebral, hysterical discourses on male/female relationships, parents, religion, the hereafter, success from one of the funniest, most neurotic people ever born.He taps into the little bit of neurotic tendency every one of us has. Never get tired of this!
What's great about it: Some of the best intellectual comedy every made
What's not so great: Isn't low-brow-won't appeal to everyone

Probably one of the most honored epics on recent television, HBO's mini-series Band of Brothers was produced by the powerhouse team of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It won the Golden Globe for Best Mini-series and is nominated for 19 Emmys. The 6-disc DVD set comes in an embossed metallic case. It has an extraordinary amount of information in addition to the 10-part true-life story of the men of Easy Company in the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. To start with, it contains the documentary "We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company," which interviews the real men of Easy Company as they tell their stories, inner-cut with film footage and rare and archival photos. Also included is a making-of feature on the mini-series, actor Ron Livingston's video diary that shows behind-the-scenes footage from the actor's perspective, and a featurette of the screening on the beaches of Normandy. There is also an optional enhanced viewing "Field Guide," which extensively references people, places and events connected to Easy Company and their campaign through Europe and WWII as a whole. Additionally included are character bios, web-links to the Band of Brothers living memorial, as well as other pertinent sites, a still photo gallery, episodic previews and scene selection menus. The DVD is released in widescreen only with a 16:9 aspect ratio from High Definition digital masters, the audio is DTS English and 5.1 Surround as well as English, French and Spanish Dolby Surround. Spanish subtitles and English closed-captioning is also included. This is a must-own DVD set, especially for history buffs and collectors of World War II information.

WWII comes alive!

Incredible! Doesn't precisely follow the book, but faithful enough to satisfy most sticklers! Amazing insight into the bond that forms between men in war who in civilian life would never engage-and the mark they forever leave on each other-and that war leaves on them.
Highly recommended for high school kids to make war real for them-so they can never again think of it as just a video game...
What's great about it: Engaging characters, absorbing plot
What's not so great: Takes a long time to watch it all,and must be done in order
