Still the gold standard for the modern Celtic revival of dance and music that has been reintroduced to the world on the 'big stage'. Unfortunately, if you go to see a live theater show today, the characters in this production will no longer be performing. It is difficult to believe the precision and sheer athleticism of this dance, combined with grace, elegance, and the sheer exuberant passion of the music. Makes everyone wish they could be Irish (and wonder what it is in the water that can make them so fit beyond mere mortals!)
What's great about it: Unbelievable dance, music, artistry and athleticism in one entertaining package
What's not so great: Don't expect to see the same cast in person
Some of the most memorable and endurable music you'll ever find-by a duo whose harmonies are so sweet they can make you shiver with anticipation at the onset of each new track. Maybe no one is as versatile as Paul Simon-and his lyrics stand alone as fine poetry. Garfunkel's soaring, haunting range complements the laid back Simon to make music history. You'll wear this CD out!
What's great about it: Meaningful lyrics, lovely music to warm and break your heart!
What's not so great: Wish there could be more songs!
The stylings of this underappreciated artist on Christmas classics old and new are phenomenal. While critically acclaimed and widely known in jazz circles, it is a shame that this amazing artist isn't at the top of everyone's charts. She isn't a commercial 'sell-out', but instead can bring you to tears with her nuanced renditions. When she lends her vocal instrument to Christmas songs, it is a sign that you need to light a fire, turn off the phone, and snuggle with a cup of tea by candlelight with someone you love to really appreciate the holiday in a whole new way with this artist!
What's great about it: Incredible stylings of new and old classics by a musical icon
One especially lovely rendition of 'Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. A spirited, jazzy cover of 'Baby It's Cold Outside'-works amazingly well for a pop/folk type singer. Shows his 'edgy' side and versatility. The rest of the album is pleasant, with his sweet voice lending itself to the old Christmas standards. A good album for a quiet night of gift wrapping or card writing with a cup of mulled cider.
What's great about it: Old Standards in an easy going style
This was a great collaboration-far better than the sequel they tried to perform. Gibb and Streisand had a tremendous audio chemistry that comes through on the title song-with lots of other tracks which make the album a great buy. Tunes to weep over, tunes that are uptempo enough for exercise-just a great nostalgia trip!
What's great about it: Fabulous beat/Tons of hits!
Gorgeous song by Bette Midler, who turns it a spirited performance. Syrupy plot line that is a guaranteed tear jerker, but somehow it works when you just need pure escapism that leaves you feeling wrung out and in touch with your more human feelings at the same time! Worth a Friday night curl up on the couch with a pint of ice cream and a couple BFF's.!
What's great about it: Great for an escape with a pint of ice cream
What's not so great: Incredibly schmaltzy- most men will hate it!
A good compilation of Rondstadt's earlier hits, during her rock/pop era. Lots of lesser known tracks that are equally good, if not better, than the top 40 hits. Frankly, feel that she grew better AFTER this era, and matured in her ability to both vocalize and emote during her 'trio' period with Dolly Parton and Emily Lou, and later during her torch song era. But this will take you on a pleasant nostalgia trip!
What's great about it: All the oldies that you'll remember, plus some great unknown songs
What's not so great: Only a few songs that most people will remember
Whether you like or abhor their political views, the Chicks have TALENT! The strong vocals of Natalie, coupled with the amazing instrumental talents of her fellow band members fully support the personal, insightful, and poetic lyrics of each cut. Only a couple o f weak tracks, but the unrepentant nature and fire and feistiness of this music will make this a favorite!
What's great about it: Personal lyrics coupled with solid music
What's not so great: Not every track is equally strong
The film has it all-humor, nostalgia, kid appeal, and a whole layer of subtext that only adults will get. Reminds you of what the holidays and childhood were REALLY like from a kid's perspective-yet viewed through an adult prism that tugs at your heart. Irreverent at times, funny all the time, and heartwarming enough that you'll want to see this EVERY year!
What's great about it: Universal humor with baby boomer special appeal
What's not so great: Younger people may miss some subtle references.
For Neil Diamond lovers this is a perfect update for your collection. Has most of his great hits, without having to pick a track here or there from different albums. Enables you to have his music on a CD versus those old funky cassettes or heaven forbid, scratched up vinyl!
What's great about it: Has most of his hits in one compact disc
What's not so great: You either love him or hate him
